A/N: I am glad you all liked Sofia's response to Callie asking about Arizona. I took that from a personal experience. Kids are the funniest, especially at the age where they have zero filter and are still so innocent.
This chapter is heavy golf, so if the golf is not for you stay with me. This is the first of 2 final rounds for The Race. This chapter will be almost all Arizona's POV.
Chapter 26
Saturday
Arizona's POV
Waking up this morning Arizona can feel the nerves radiating through her body. Today is the first of two rounds for the weekend. If she performs well today, that will take some pressure off of tomorrow. Granted, it is crunch time, so the pressure is not going to go away until tomorrow afternoon when this is all done and over with. To say Arizona was proud of herself was an understatement. She knew she could play on the same course as the guys, but the fact she qualified for the finals was something that she took great pride in. It helped that her family was here to keep her calm and ground her. Reflecting back on the last 2 weeks Arizona couldn't believe where she was now. It all started as just a golf tournament. Now, it was so much more. It was proving herself to the world and the start of a relationship she couldn't be happier about. When she bumped into that beautiful brunette on her first day, she couldn't have expected to be where she is now.
Rolling over and looking at the clock, Arizona saw that it was 7am. Calliope would be coming over in about an hour to enjoy the pregame breakfast Barbara Robbins was surely already in the kitchen getting ready. When Carlos Torres had initially proposed the Presidential Suite, Arizona had been very hesitant. Now, she was beyond grateful. The fact her mother could cook them meals just like she would before all Arizona's rounds growing up brought the blonde a sense of peace that she didn't realize she needed.
After her shower and stretching Arizona walked out into the kitchen. She saw her mother working diligently on a huge breakfast spread. Grabbing some coffee and settling into one of the barstools in the kitchen Arizona just took a second to enjoy the quiet.
"Good Morning Mama."
"Oh, Arizona. I didn't even see you. Good Morning Sweetie. Ready for today?"
"Yeah. As ready as I will ever be. Thank you for cooking breakfast."
"Of course, dear. Tim and Teddy are headed up now and your father just went downstairs to grab a newspaper. Help me set the table."
Everyone was now in the kitchen getting ready for breakfast when Arizona heard a knock at the front door. Knowing who it was, she ran over to answer. Opening the door, she felt a sense of calm wash over her at the sight of her girlfriend.
"Good Morning beautiful." Arizona leaned in a kissed her favorite brunette.
"Mmm morning." Callie responded returning the kiss.
Leading Callie into the kitchen, Arizona grabbed another coffee mug and set it at the place setting next to her. Callie was immediately welcomed by Arizona's family and the whole breakfast was perfect. Arizona's mother was completely obsessed with Callie. They discussed recipes, parenting, and to Arizona's surprise a little bit about business. Reminding herself to talk to Callie about bringing Sofia next time, she just enjoyed her breakfast and the company of all her favorite people.
When it was time for her head to head down with Tim, Callie pulled her into her room.
"So, I just wanted to say good luck. I know you don't need it but Sof and I are rooting for you. No matter what happens today and tomorrow, I want you to know I am proud of you." Callie sincerely stated.
"Thank you. I am nervous but having you here does put me at ease. I know it is hectic downstairs, but I really appreciate you spending the morning with me and my crazy family."
"You never have to thank me. I am here as long as you will have me."
Grabbing Callie's hips Arizona pulled her brunette into her and kissed her. The kiss was not hurried or overly passionate. It was a kiss confirming their love. As Arizona pulled away, she placed her forehead on Callie's.
"I love you Calliope. Try to make it out to see me today?"
"I love you too. I will do my best. I have to head downstairs but I will see you after."
As Callie walked out Arizona couldn't help but smile. That woman was the missing piece of a puzzle Arizona didn't even know existed. Making sure she had her lucky hat and the bracelet Sofia had made for her she packed up and headed out to the course.
The Race's final pairings were all about how you ended up. So, Derek Shepard (1) was paired with Cooper Freedman (10). Then, so on and so forth. As much as Arizona wished she was with Alex, she despised who she was paired with just as much. Since Arizona finished 3rd, she was paired with the golfer who finished 8th…. that just so happens to be George O'Malley. Just what she needed. Tim had given her a pep talk prior to them stepping out onto the course. They both agreed that they would not give George the satisfaction of getting in her head or impacting her game. Easier said than done, but Arizona was determined. Taking a deep breath, she walked up to the first hole tee box near where George was standing.
"Ms. Robbins." George tipped his hat.
"George." Arizona responded in a chipped tone.
Going about getting her things the way she liked them with the help of Tim she didn't even give George a second look. Since Arizona was higher in the rankings, she was going to tee off first. The first hole wasn't anything to write home about, but it was a long drive. As she had mentioned before, the men could out drive her. It was just basic fact. The wind was at her back today, so she was going to use that to her advantage.
Waiting for the announcer to finish introducing her (since it was the first hole of the finals) she put her tee in the ground and got herself into position. Once the announcer finished, she took a deep breath, pulled back, and sliced through perfectly. Hearing the perfect *pop* that came with a clear drive. The hole was a 511 yds hole and Arizona's average drive was about half that. With the wind at her back she watched as her drive sored through the air and landed about 300 yds from the hole right in the middle of the fairway. Hearing the applause of the crowd fired her up even more. The Race was on.
George stepped up to the tee and after his introduction hit a pretty clean drive as well. It went a bit further than Arizona's but ended up off the fairway over by some trees. Arizona knew she shouldn't wish ill will on anyone, but she was really hoping that George had a rough day on the course.
Walking to her ball Tim took her driver and placed it into her signature pink bag. "Alright AZ, wind is at your back so lets hope it stays there. You remember the practice round after the rain how slow the greens are now, so kept that in mind here. You want to hit it lighter due to the wind but keep in mind you won't get the roll you are used to because of the dampness."
"You got it brother. Thank you." She grabbed the offered club from Tim and assessed her position. Feeling the wind still at her back. Arizona put a little less into her iron shot than she normally would have. She still had 200 yards to go, but the wind was really kicking. She hit her ball a tad to the left and watched as it tumbled about 20 feet from the hole. Tim was right, the second the ball hit the green it came to a dead stop. Zero roll. Something to keep in mind for her putt.
Arizona watched as George didn't apply the same logic as she did. George was not someone she did not see at the practice rounds after the rain, so she watched as his ball came to a dead stop about 60 feet from the green. She chuckled as he kicked the dirt near him and shoved his club back into his bag.
"Told you the practice round was more important than sucking face with Callie." Tim joked.
"Oh, give me a break. We both know how important it was to get out here after that rain. Don't give yourself too much credit." She bumped into his shoulder. Tim was always making it a point to keep things lighthearted on the course. Even during her worst rounds, Tim could make her laugh.
Stepping up to her ball she took her time to walk around and assess how wet the green really was. She saw a few dry patches near the hole that she had to take into consideration. 20 feet wasn't an overly complicated putt, but with the course conditions it could be. She squared up, evenly spacing her feet with her shoulders and gave the ball a tad more juice then she would on a normal day. She watched as the ball very slowly made its way to the hole, stopping just short. Shit. These greens would be an issue today. She walked up to her ball and gave it a tap, the glorious sound of the ball hitting the plastic hole rang out. Par. She would take it.
She stepped back and allowed George his space to finish the hole as well. George seemingly paid zero attention to how Arizona's putt barley rolled and found himself double bogeying the first hole. His cockiness was going to be his downfall, a downfall Arizona was more than happy to have a front row seat to.
The day was progressing nicely for Arizona. She currently sat 5 under par and stuck with her traditional refusal to look at the score board. The heat and humidity were starting to flare up and she could tell all the other golfers were once again feeling it. Miami's weather was a real bitch. Something to keep in mind when she came and visited Calliope and Sofia. Quickly dismissing thoughts of her two favorite girls, she needed to focus. She was on the 14th hole and she needed to finish strong. George had somewhat rebounded after his disastrous first hole and sat 2 under par. Arizona had a solid 3 stroke lead over him and that was enough for her right now. He hadn't said more than 3 words to her all day and to say she was surprised was an understatement. There was a TV break, so everyone was currently standing around. After a few brief words with her parents, Tim, and Teddy she looked up and saw the Black and Gold golf cart that she has seen Callie on a few times previously. As she finished up her water she walked towards where the cart was parked. Seeing her brunette, she hurried over for a quick hello.
"Well hello there. What brings you out here?" Arizona joked.
"Someone said something about a hot blonde golfing pretty well and I just had to see for myself." Callie quipped back.
"Ohh at hot blonde. Where?" She jokingly looked around.
"You are right, I don't see one either." Callie kissed her cheek briefly.
"Ouch. That one hurt. I do see a sexy brunette though. She isn't golfing but she is whipping around in a golf cart. Any chance she would want to hang out with me tonight? She has a hot tub and I can think of a few things that I would really enjoy doing in that hot tub." Arizona grabbed Callie's hand pulling her in closer.
"I think that can be arranged." Callie whispered back.
Hearing the call that things were getting ready to start again, Arizona said goodbye with a promise to get in touch with her after the round was over. As she was walking up to the tee box, a very unwelcome voice made itself heard for the first time in 13 holes.
"Well, looks like you two took advantage of the publicity we got for you." George snidely commented.
Chuckling, Arizona looked at him "Listen George. What you and Burke did was bullshit. It was even worse you used that poor Julie girl. You are pathetic. Did no one teach you that no means no? You got all pissy because Callie didn't want to go out with you. How childish can you be? Callie and I didn't need publicity, you brought that to us. I am not changing one thing about how I would act since your stunt the other day. Maybe I should say thank you though? Now I can kiss my girlfriend in public. So if anything, you helped us out. How about you pull your head out of your ass and out of my relationship and focus on these last 4 holes." Arizona turned to walk away. Before she could take a step she felt someone grab her wrist turning her around.
George was now inches away from her face. "Listen here Robbins. Just because you want to parade your nasty lifestyle around doesn't-"Before Arizona even realized George had stopped talking she saw him on the ground a tall blue eyed blonde hoovering over him. "Tim." Was all Arizona could say before she saw another familiar face.
"Mr. O'Malley. I though I made myself clear about how we treat other golfers. We definitely do not put our hands on them." Carlos Torres's voice boomed. "I suggest you get up, brush yourself off, and pray that you are able to golf tomorrow. The PGA board will be convening tonight to discuss your actions."
Carlos and Tim both approached Arizona. "Are you okay AZ?" Tim asked. "Do you want me to have him thrown off the course?" Carlos asked.
In that moment, Arizona just felt embarrassed. She knew George's actions were not her fault, but it didn't stop her from feeling the hundreds of eyes on her. She promptly cleared her throat and stood up straight, fighting back the tears she felt. "No no. I am good. Let me beat him where it matters." She walked up to the 14th hole tee box and started messing with her bag and clubs.
After bogeying the 14th hole where George conveniently was able to par Arizona knew she needed to regroup. She couldn't let this drama impact this once in a lifetime opportunity. She walked over to her dad while George was prepping himself for his 15th hole to start.
"Bug, you good? You looked a little tight last hole." Daniel Robbins could read his daughter better than anyone.
"Yeah Dad. I am okay. Just getting stiff."
"Bug, look at me." Daniel demanded. Arizona turned and looked at her father.
"Do not let this guy get to you. I heard what he said, and he was lucky your brother and Mr. Torres beat me over there. This is your chance Arizona. I am so proud of you. Your mother and I both are. Whether you finish 1st or 10th you have given these guys hell. But we both know you won't be satisfied with 10th. You have an opportunity here soldier. Do not let it slip away. Put your game face on and finish these last 4 holes like the golfer we both know you are. I love you, Bug. Finish this." Daniel Robbins could give one hell of a pep talk. His ability to make Arizona feel like she could do anything was something she had appreciated since she was a little girl.
"You got it pops. I love you." Arizona said before squeezing his arm and walking away. She walked up to the 15th hole and drove her ball further than she ever had. She was right on the green. She had an opportunity to eagle this hole and she was not going to mess it up. Watching as George hit a nice iron shot to get himself up onto the green, Arizona approached her ball. It was currently laying about 40 feet from the hole, slightly to the right. This green was rather hilly and was by no means easy. She walked around a few times and crouched down to see what the balls path would look like. Replaying her father's words in her head. She got into her stance. Listening as George cleared his throat while she was prepping her shot, which was not surprising he was a terrible human, so his lack of golf ethic was far from shocking. She stood there, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes. She envisioned the terrain and pulled her putter back, letting it glide forward she watched as the ball slowly moved across the green. 30ft…..20ft…..10ft…..5ft…*clink*. The roar of the applause broke Arizona out of her daze.
"Holy shit Arizona! What a shot!" Tim ran up to her and hugged her.
Arizona was speechless. That was the best putt she had ever made. She just eagled and put herself at 6 under par. This was the hole she needed. Hearing George huff she just laughed. This was hers to lose.
As Arizona knocked her ball into the 18th hole to finish up with a par, she allowed herself to glance at the scoreboard. She currently sat in 4th place at 8 under par. The last few holes had been good to her. George currently sat at 4 under if she remembered correctly. Placing him in 8th at the moment. She knew that other golfers were still out on the course so she wouldn't know the actual scores for another few hours. But 4th place put her in striking distance. She couldn't help but smile to herself when she saw who currently sat in first. Alex Karev was having himself a day at 11 under. She was happy for him. She knew she had to step it up tomorrow, but she knew she could catch him.
As Arizona walked away, she heard George call out to her. She chose to ignore him and continue her way into the media tent knowing she would be expected to interview today and tomorrow. Settling herself in her seat she adjusted her hat and sat ready for questions. The first reporter she recognized from previous media sessions and he was always kind, so she pointed to him to ask his question.
"How are you feeling about todays round. That 15th hole was very impressive"
Smiling her signature dimple smile she responded "well thank you. I was just as surprised as you were. A good way to rally after a bogey. I am happy with how I played today. A few things to clean up for tomorrow. With the heat today I expect the course to be different tomorrow, maybe a little bit faster on the greens than today. That was a challenge"
Questions continued coming in…
"You think you have a chance to catch the few ahead of you?"
"Absolutely. All it takes is one round, good or bad. I am confident"
"What was the most difficult hole today?"
"Well clearly the 14th gave me a hard time." Arizona laughed. Knowing these golf related questions were too easy, she saw a brunette reporter in the back looking like a lion ready to pounce the press manager pointed at her.
"Ms. Robbins. There were photos of you and Ms. Torres together the last two days and a few people mentioned seeing you both at the 14th hole. Is her presence what distracted you on that hole?"
Putting on her fake smile Arizona responded clearly "Yes, Ms. Torres is my girlfriend, so we are seen together. The leaking of her name may have accelerated you all getting to see us together. Her presence is the complete opposite of distraction. Thank you for the concern though." Arizona could tell the reporter was bummed she didn't get a more emotional response.
The questions continued. Some golf some Callie. Thankfully there seemed to be some sort of media blackout on the 14th because no one asked about her altercation with George. As Arizona wrapped up the press conference, she headed back into the hotel ready to hop in the shower and go see her girl.
Callie's POV
Callie had just arrived home after a hectic day at work. The Race was coming to an end so there were countless meetings today preparing for the final dinner, clean up, mass room turn over, etc. Her staff continued to impress her with how they were handling the surge in people. Julie's absence was noticed, and questions were asked but Callie was able to keep everyone at bay.
Changing out of her work clothes and directly into her bathing suit with a cover up she sat on the couch to wait for her blonde. She turned on ESPN since todays rounds should be done and over with. She had heard Arizona golfed well that day, but she couldn't bring herself to look at the score board.
Shortly after seeing Arizona on the 14th hole she watched her father stormed into the lobby and head straight to his lounge with his phone pressed to his ear. She didn't get a chance to ask what had happened. As she watched the sports anchor give brief recap with highlight from the tournament her phone vibrated.
10 minutes out. Can't wait to see you
Smiling she put her phone down. She couldn't wait to see Arizona. Just as she was thinking about her girlfriend her face popped up on the television. She was standing pretty far away from the hole she was on and Callie could tell by Arizona's body language she was 100% relaxed. She watched as the replay showed Arizona hitting the ball and it rolling for what felt like forever before it found its way into the hole. She watched as Tim snatched Arizona up in a hug and the crowd went crazy. Damn. Her blonde was good. As that highlight came to a close, she saw a few tidbits of different golfers interviews. Then the sports caster said they had the standings from the closing of the first round. Holding her breath, she listened:
Alex Karev
Derek Shepard
Preston Burke
Arizona Robbins
Andrew DeLuca
Cooper Freedman
Jackson Avery
George O'Malley
Richard Webber
Atticus Lincoln
Seeing her girlfriend's name, she couldn't help but jump with excitement. 4th place! She knew Arizona could close this out tomorrow, she just knew it. Doing a little happy dance, she didn't even notice that she had company.
"To what do I owe the pleasure of walking into my gorgeous girlfriend dancing around in a small bikini?" The voice behind her quietly asked.
Stopping in her tracks she slowly turned around and was met with her favorite smile. Feeling a little embarrassed for getting caught fan girling over her own girlfriend she cleared her throat.
"Well, for your information my girlfriend happened to have a hell of a day on the golf course. She is in 4th place and I was having an independent celebration." She spoke confidently. As she was finishing her sentence she watched as Arizona walked closer and closer to her. She felt Arizona's arms wrap around her waist and pull her in.
"Well. Could I get in on this celebration?" Arizona whispered.
She looked up at her blonde and was met with a look that could only be described as primal. Suddenly her throat went dry and she forgot how to speak. She settled for nodding her head. She heard Arizona laugh.
"Lets move this to the hot tub." Arizona said as she grabbed her hand and lead her out the back door.
Oh yeah, we are celebrating.
