A/N: I want to thank you all for the well wishes on the birth of my son. The reviews saying congrats, messages, etc. it really means a lot to me. We are just over 2 weeks in, and we are slowly finding a rhythm. I cannot commit to regular updates at this point since everything is still very unpredictable. A new baby and a toddler make for chaos.
Chapter 32
Arizona POV
After the complete disaster that was avoided, Arizona decided that she needed to be a bit more careful while she was out. She loved the fact that she had fans, actual fans that recognized her when she went out. She had known The Race was going to make her a little more well known, but she had not anticipated the level of recognition that happened at the bar the other night. When she was golfing in the LPGA she would meet the occasional fan and she would see little blurbs here and there on very unknown gossip sites about her dating life and other random things. Arizona had walked past a newsstand on her way to grab coffee that morning and she saw a photo of her on the right corner of the cover. It was all very weird. She golfed because she loved it, not to get famous. Not to mention, golfers were not normally "celebrities". Sure, you had your Tiger Woods who everyone knew and a few others, but she was not expecting anything like that.
As much as Arizona hated to admit it, she needed to put Callie and Sofia out of her mind for the day. She missed them a little too much for her liking. She had a tournament to focus on. A tournament that she was really not doing well at. She knew she was not going to win. Derek Shepard was golfing out of his mind. The only thing that would stop him taking home the top spot would be an injury withdraw. Arizona's main concern was not being labeled as someone who's win last weekend was "luck". She needed to get her head on straight and she needed to do it now. Texting Tim to meet her on the practice course, she grabbed her lucky hat and headed downstairs. Seeing her brother, she couldn't help but notice he didn't look too happy with her.
"Arizona…we got a practice round in after you spoke with Callie this morning. What the hell are we doing?" Tim asked, clearly annoyed.
"Tim. I golfed like shit yesterday and the practice round wasn't really anything to write home about either. I just want to do 9 and work on some driving."
"You need to take it easy on your back. Last thing you need is to knock yourself out for next weekend. It is the last tournament, and you need to be there, so you are eligible to do the full roster of tournaments next year."
"Thanks, Mom. Let's just go. I feel fine."
As Arizona turned to head out to the course she heard Tim mumbling something under his breath. Sometimes the fact they were siblings made it hard to be his "boss". She never threw it in his face that he worked for her, but sometimes his attitude made her want to do just that. She was already irritated and missing Callie, pair that with the situation that morning, it was just not a good day to get on her bad side. Turning around and giving Tim the stare that told him to zip it, they headed to the first hole. She was silently praying that this round went her way. She needed something to go her way.
Callie's POV
"Sofia, not too close to the water sweetie. The water is pretty rough today" Callie yelled out. Callie and Sofia had arrived at the beach about an hour ago. Shortly after they arrived, Aria and the twins joined them along with Mark. Sofia was a very strong swimmer, but the ocean was unpredictable. The last thing they needed as another near drowning incident. She watched as Sofia continued to work on her sand castle with her cousin's assistance.
"So…are you going to tell me what is going on with the whole Arizona thing?" Aria asked with a hint of attitude. Callie loved how protective her sister was but once Aria had an idea about someone in her head, it was hard to change her mind.
"Aria, I explained to you what happened already. I spoke with Arizona this morning, and Tim confirmed what I told you."
"I don't know Cal…The picture I saw looked pretty in the moment to me. If you asked me to lie to Arizona I would, so forgive me for not taking her brother's word for it. The whole situation just seems a little suspect."
"Aria…leave her be. If she trusts Arizona, let it go." Mark chimed in. When he received the signature Torres glare from Aria he quickly got up and headed to join the kids sandcastle making.
"I need you to believe me when I tell you I trust what she told me. You know I am the queen of jumping to conclusions, but my gut is telling me to trust her." Callie was being sincere. She had zero doubts that what Arizona was telling her was the truth. In past relationships she would have lost her mind over this. She would have over analyzed and drove herself crazy. But, the sincerity in Arizona's voice was all she needed.
"Okay. But…I am telling you, if I see anymore shady shit I am stepping in."
"I have no doubt about that. If anything else happens, I won't hesitate to let you. I love you and I appreciate you looking out for me and Sof." Callie hugged her sister. She really would be lost without Aria. "Why don't you let me take the girls tonight? I owe you big time for last week and you and Mark should go out. Enjoy each other's company without three kids around." Callie needed the distraction. She was missing Arizona like crazy. Pair that with the stress of work, she needed to be busy.
"I will never turn down that offer. I will drop them off after I take them home and get them cleaned up. Aurora has a dentist appointment tomorrow, so I will pick them up mid-morning if that works?"
"Sounds good. It looks like it is ready to start raining, want to pack them up and head out?" Callie asked.
"Yeah, lets go. I don't want to get wet."
"Aria….you are in your bathing suit….at the beach…." Callie laughed. They honestly couldn't be any more different if they tried.
"I know, but I look hot in this suit. Trust me, if you carried twins and looked like this in a bikini, you would wear it too!" Aria was not lying. When she was pregnant with the twins she was mortified about how big she got. Her ex husband was also a royal jack ass about it, but Aria looked fantastic pregnant and she looked even better now. It also helped she had Mark who told her everyday how beautiful she was. It seemed things were finally looking up for the Torres women.
Arizona's POV
Wrapping up the 9th hole, Arizona was feeling more like herself. There was nothing a good round couldn't fix. She felt loose and her mood had improved significantly. Tim even seemed to perk up around the 3rd hole. Arizona knew she was kind of a bitch earlier and Tim was also missing Teddy, but she was grateful that he put up with her and her mood swings.
"Want to grab some dinner?" Tim asked as they headed back up the elevator.
"Sure. Meet me in the lobby in an hour." Arizona headed to her room. She realized it was already close to 9pm in Miami. If she wanted to chat with Callie, she needed to call her soon.
Showering and changing for dinner with Tim at lightning speed, Arizona picked up her iPad and hit Callie's number to FaceTime. She waited impatiently for the call to connect. She felt the need to apologize again for what happened last night. She had never heard Callie so upset. The idea that she caused the brunette that much pain really did not sit well with her. Add that to the fact that she couldn't get in touch with Arizona all morning, yeah…the blonde was feeling pretty guilty. Just when Arizona thought she was not going to get to speak with her girlfriend, the call connected.
"Arizona!" Sofia squealed. While this was not who Arizona was expecting, she couldn't help the giant smile that spread across her face when she saw her favorite 6 year old. She also noticed two more little girls playing in the back. She could only assume they were Aria's girls. She noticed that Sofia was in her bedroom. Wondering where Callie was, Arizona decided that she would chat with Sof for a few minutes.
"Hey Sofia. How was the beach?"
"It was great. We couldn't swim though. The waves were HUGE." Sofia was the queen of hyperbole. Everything was dramatic with her. Honestly, Arizona thought it was adorable. Callie just said it added to her dramatic personality.
"Oh yea? Was there a storm or something today?"
"Not a big one, just a normal Miami storm. We couldn't go outside though. There was lots of lightning and Mami said we couldn't go out when there was lightning. But I think she was just making stuff up."
Arizona couldn't help but laugh at the matter-of-fact statement. "Sofia, your mom is right. Lightning is dangerous. You could get hurt. Is that Allegra and Aurora there with you?"
"Yup. We are having a sleep over. Mami is getting our movie ready right now. Do you want to talk to her?"
"Yes I would love to talk to her. I will call you soon though. I want to hear about your field trip on Monday." Callie had mentioned that Sofia's class were going to some science museum that Sofia was over the moon excited for. "Okay. I will call you after I get home!" Sofia sprinted with the iPad in her hand making the picture look like the blair witch project. Arizona had to look away. She could hear Callie in the background telling Sofia to stop running. Sofia seemed to have just put the iPad on the counter and went back to her room.
"Calliope?" Arizona called out. Not seeing any movement or response she did hear Callie speaking to someone. She was speaking Spanish which meant she was talking to family. Callie rarely spoke Spanish which was weird to Arizona. It sounded so beautiful coming out of her perfect mouth and according to Callie a very large population of Miami also spoke Spanish. She could hear that Callie was not just speaking Spanish, she was in a heated discussion. She had no idea what was being said but it she could tell her girlfriend was irritated. She kind of felt like she was invading her privacy by not hanging up, but she really did want to talk to her.
"Calliope!" Arizona yelled. Hearing the other side of the iPad go quiet, she waited. Then the face she had been missing badly came into view.
"Arizona?" Callie asked.
"Hey babe." Arizona smiled at her girlfriend. She saw Callie hold up her finger telling her to give her a second and Arizona just nodded. She heard Callie wrap up her phone call, which seemed to be with her dad and then pick the iPad back up.
"Um, sorry. I didn't know you called." Callie was clearly upset. Her eyes seemed to be a bit bloodshot, and she looked disheveled.
"Its no problem. I talked to Sofia for a few minutes and then she kind of just left me on the counter." She tried to joke. Callie was someone who you had to organically ask about issues. She had learned over their short time together that pushing her to talk was a mistake. However, Arizona could not help but feel maybe what happened earlier was the reason for the brunette's current state.
"Ahh, that explains the running in and out of the room. Sorry about that. Allegra and Aurora are here so she is a bit all over the place. Plus, she could not be at the beach as long as she wanted so the attitude has been at an all-time high today. How are you?" Callie was clearly trying to deflect. Arizona would allow it for a little bit.
"I am good. I did another practice round this afternoon, and I am feeling a bit better than I was this morning. I did not realize how tight I was during my first round. My back is feeling 100% but I guess the first round of the tournament it wasn't. I miss you though."
"I miss you too. I can't wait until you are back. I was crazy enough to sign up for 3 kids under 7 tonight. I figured I owed Aria for last week. She really was a life saver."
"That was nice of you. I am sure her and Mark could use some adult time." There was a minute of silence. "Calliope….are you alright? You look like you have been crying. I am really sorry about this morning babe. I promise nothing like that will happen again. I would never do anything to intentionally hurt you. I swear. I-" Arizona was cut off before she could go into a tailspin.
"Arizona. I am not upset about this morning. I told you, I trust you. It has just been a really long day. Like I said, 3 kids under 7 while it is raining, and I can't ship them outside is not ideal." Callie joked, she was clearly lying but Arizona was not going to push her. She would come to her eventually.
Arizona's phone chimed signaling a text from Tim saying he was in the lobby.
"I have to run babe. I am taking Tim to dinner. I was kind of a bitch to him today."
Callie laughed, she knew Arizona could be tough on her brother and their situation this morning paired with the rough outing the other day surely had Arizona in a special type of mood. "I think that is very nice of you to buy him dinner. Try to relax babe. You have your second of three rounds tomorrow. We are perfectly fine and I am anxiously waiting for you to come back to me. I love you." Callie's sincerity was enough to put Arizona at ease about their situation earlier that morning. However, something was clearly eating at her girlfriend. Making a mental note to bring it up tomorrow, she wrapped up their call.
"I love you too and I will call you tomorrow. Goodnight Calliope." Arizona blew her a kiss and hung up the call. That conversation did nothing to help her heart. She missed her girlfriend and something was clearly wrong with her. Picking up her phone she quickly took care of a quick call and headed down to meet her brother.
A/N: Just a quick note. We will see what is on Callie's mind next chapter.
