Utopia Now

****************** "Amanda. You know that I trust you. And that I love you very much, and I know that you wouldn't purposely do anything wrong but…"

"Mother, I'll talk to you later, okay?"

Amanda hung up the phone and I held the receiver in my hands. I shook my head and wondered what story she would tell me about why she hadn't called all night or left a note. I put the phone down and grabbed a cup of tea and sat down to work on my crossword puzzle. I waited patiently for Amanda to get home. I was determined to get some answers from her.

A little while later Amanda came home carrying the picnic basket and she smelled like a swamp! She had the biggest grin on her face as she looked at me. She looked as though she wanted to burst into laughter. Obviously something was funny to her and she almost seemed like she wanted to share it with me. Instead, she set the picnic basket on the counter and ran upstairs before I could even say anything to her. I listened as the shower started in her bathroom and realized she had no intention in telling me where she was all night.
