Steve rushed home from work, hoping to beat Laura. He knew she had an evening class and wouldn't get out until 6:30, but that didn't give him much time to set up a romantic evening to celebrate their first day back in classes, even with all the prep work he'd done over lunch. When he reached the apartment, he began to cook. By 6:38, he had plated her lobster, garlic mashed potatoes, and asparagus. He had placed a bowl of salad between their spots at the table. He had set white roses in a vase on the table and lit candles around the apartment. He was ready.
Then the phone rang.
"Urkel residence. Steve speaking," he said as he answered it.
"Hey, Baby. It's me," Laura replied.
"Hi, Sweetheart," he cooed. "How was your first day?"
"Good," she replied. "Listen, I met some people in my last class that are signed up for the same LSAT test date as me. We're gonna head to the library for a bit to study, so I'm gonna be late."
"Oh," he said, disappointment ringing clear in his voice.
"I'm sorry, Steve. It's just, the test is in two weeks, and I've been studying on my own, but there are some areas where I'm really struggling."
"Yeah. I understand, of course. I'm always willing to help you study, though. You know that, right?"
"Of course. It's just hard studying with Dr. Genius sometimes. I need to be with people who are as freaked out as I am right now," she said gently, chuckling lightly.
"Ok. Well, study hard, my bodacious bookworm."
"Thank you, Steve. You didn't start dinner yet did you?"
Steve looked around the room at the product of hours of work spent decorating and cooking. "I whipped a little something up, but I'll just warm it up when you get home. How late do you think you'll be?"
"I have classes in the morning, so not too late. Ten, maybe? We're ordering a pizza though, so you can just put away whatever leftovers you have, ok? I'll take them for lunch tomorrow."
"Sure," he said as happily as he could manage. "No problem."
"Thank you, Baby. I'll see you soon. Love you," she said quickly.
"I love you too, Laura Lee," he cooed.
"Bye, Steve," she said as she hung up.
"Bye," he replied. He set the phone down and returned immediately to the seafood. He had to put hers away before it spoiled.
When Laura came home, at almost 11:00, she was expecting to head straight for her pillow, only to walk into a candlelit apartment covered in flowers. She gasped as she saw the banner pinned across the window. "Happy last first day of Fall semester of your undergraduate degree, Laura Lee!" the wordy banner read.
She lowered her eyes to see Steve fast asleep on the couch. "God, you are such an idiot," she murmured under her breath. She set her backpack down by the door and walked over to the couch. She leaned down and kissed him gently.
"Mm," he moaned against her lips as his eyes fluttered open. She pulled back when she saw he was awake and sat by his side. "Welcome home, Angel Lips," he purred.
"You are such an idiot," she whispered playfully. "Why didn't you tell me you'd done all this? I would've come right home."
"I know," he answered, sitting up on the couch and pulling her into his lap, "but I didn't want you to come right home. I wanted you to study. It would've been nice if I'd gotten a little more notice so I didn't waste so much time tonight, but I wanted you to study. You know your career comes first."
"No, it doesn't," she insisted with a shake of her head. "You will always come first," she promised, "until we have kids."
"Your career is important to you, Laura," he pressed, "so it's even more important to me."
"I know that, Steve, but you could've told me about this. I could've spared one night."
"But you needed to study with your classmates."
"I'll have more opportunities. We formed a little study group to get each other through these next two weeks."
"Good. I'm glad," he said, "and if there's anything I can do to help, just let me know."
"There are two things you can do to help me right now," she began.
"What?"
"One. Don't tell me whatever amazing thing you made for dinner. I don't even wanna know what I could've been having instead of greasy pizza with too much sauce," she teased.
He laughed and snorted. "Ok, I won't tell you."
"Good. Two," she continued as she stood and offered him her hand. He grabbed it and stood with her, following her happily as she led him back to the bedroom. "Come have sex with me so I can work off some of this guilt."
"Yes, Ma'am," he said excitedly.
He paused in the doorway. "But I need to blow out the candles first."
"After!" she ordered as she took off her shirt.
"Ok," he agreed, going straight for the clasp on her bra.
