Fran came down the stairs in a short sexy dress. She had rolled her hair into curls; they playfully framed her face. She went to the mirror in the hallway and checked her makeup and wiped the lipstick off her teeth. Maggie and Brighton sat in the living room looking at their nanny. Brighton whistled with her teeth in approval. "Wow cool outfit Fran! May I borrow it once?" "Over my dead body Maggie!" She went to the couch. "Listen up! Gracie is spending the night at Erica's house tonight and you guys behave. I don't want to hear any complaints!" Just then Niles came into the room with a bowl of popcorn. "Wow Miss Fine! What are you up to tonight?" "I have a date with Mark!" "Again?! You've been seeing this gentleman quite often lately. Surely this is going to be serious?" Niles looked at Fran curiously. She had been the nanny in the Sheffield household for just over a year now, but none of their relationships had lasted that long. "We'll see. Anyway, he's a great guy, handsome charming generous and he can dance, I swear he makes your knees weak."
During her babbling Maxwell, elegantly dressed, had joined them. He gave a disapproving snort. Annoyed he said "Miss Fine, are you gushing about your dream boy again? You're acting like a silly teenager!" "Mr. Sheffield, some people have a personal life, unlike you." "By the way, when are we going to meet this Prince Charming?" "You know, I've learned from my mistakes. I will wait before I expose Mark to my family's insanity and introduce him to this household." She sparked at him provocative. You should be happy not to meet him. He's terribly jealous and doesn't like me living under the same roof as you at all" "That's ridiculous, you're only my nanny and I'm your boss!" Maggie and Brighton rolled their eyes in annoyance, always this bickering between Fran and their father. He didn't seem to like Fran seeing another man and she was insisting on her right to privacy. Niles looked rather distressed. His boss was obviously jealous of this Mark, why didn't he finally invite Miss Fine to dinner himself. Instead, he let her go out with strange men and then he could endure his bad mood.
Maxwell put on his coat and turned to his children "Well I'm off! Behave yourselves and don't give Niles any fight!" "Where are you going Mr. Sheffield and so chic?" asked Fran. "I'm meeting a potential backer at the Plaza. I hope to convince him of my qualities. Oh, by the way, Niles. I'm going to spend the night at the Plaza. I can't possibly expect from Cliff, the driver, to wait that long again and last time it got so late I almost didn't get a cab. I don't want to go over this again" "All right sir!" Niles wondered. This sponsor really seemed to be a tough one. Several times now he had met with him and each time he had come home very late or not until early in the morning." Maxwell said goodbye to everyone and drove off in the limousine. A short time later, a cab pulled up in front of the house and Fran headed out. "Don't wait for me Niles, I'm sure it will be late or early." She winked at him and was gone. Niles watched her go, depressed. There she goes, enjoying her life and his boss was spending an elegant evening at the Plaza, and he was left to sit at home and take care of two teenagers.
Maxwell, meanwhile, had arrived at the hotel. He had already ordered a luxurious suite in advance. He looked around to see if all the arrangements he had asked for had been made. Satisfied, he went down to the bar to drink a cognac. All the time he squinted at the entrance. Finally, he caught sight of the person he had been waiting for.
