On The Way to Denali:
Polina and Valentina drove in silence as they waited for the screams of agony that were sure to come to begin. They both knew that a vampire transformation was painful and no one could go through it without screaming their heads off. So it came as quite a shock when twenty minutes into the journey, not one cry could be heard from the trunk.
Polina, who was driving, shot her sister a concerned glance. "It is so odd sister, I expected the human to be screaming right about now," she said.
Valentina, who was staring straight ahead, looked less concerned. "Can't you hear it, sister? The human's heart is beating just like it should be; although, I admit it's strange for her not to be screaming," she said.
Polina gave a hum in agreement. "This human is odd indeed. First, she knew what we are and acted like she wasn't the least bit afraid of us, and now she doesn't even scream while she must be in complete agony right about now," she said.
Valentina laughed at her sister's statement. "Mmm, maybe the girl's time with the Cullens prepared her for vampire life. I can't help but wonder, though, when it's all said and done if she will regret her decision to join our kind," she said.
Polina scowled a little. "It's a little too late for regrets, is it not?" she said, her voice taking a bitter tone.
Valentina laughed at her sister's attitude. "Indeed, it is sister, indeed it is, however, I can't help but be a little curious how the Cullens are going to react when we return their pet to them," she said.
At the mention of the Cullens, a quizzical but stern look took over Polina's face. "They have a lot of explaining to do. Surely they are all old enough to know the laws of our world," she said.
The two sisters glanced at each other a moment before both huffed. "Men!" they both said together.
Valentina nodded. "Yes, indeed. Aro informed me that Carlisle is over three hundred years old, plenty old enough to know the law," she said.
Polina scowled. "Then this child being left unchanged makes even less sense to me," she said.
Valentine hummed in agreement. "You said that she was the daughter of the police chief, did you not? Perhaps that has something to do with why she hasn't been changed yet. As for why she knows what we are in the first place, my best guess would be she is a mate to one of their members," she said.
Polina's eyebrows went up in surprise. "Do you really think she could be someone's mate, sister? I mean, what are the chances of a vampire finding their mate while they are still human?" she said.
Valentina shrugged. "Although it's rare, it's not unheard of. What is strange, however, is the fact that this unknown vampire didn't change her right away once he knew what she was to him. Most vampires I know have changed their mates right away," she said.
Polina frowned. "Maybe he didn't want to change her?" she said.
Valentina joined her sister in frowning. "I wonder if this vampire was planning on leaving her human and letting her die. Although that is hard for me to believe since it's impossible for our kind to live without our mates," she said.
Polina scowled. "Or he could just have been playing with her and got reckless," she said.
Valentina shrugged again. "Or he could just be the type that likes to torture himself," she said.
The two sisters glanced at each other a moment before both huffed. "Men!" they both said together.
Meanwhile:
While the two sisters were making their way to Canada back in Port Angeles, Jessica Stanley was searching frantically for her companion, Bella Swan. The girl had said she was going to the restroom but never came back.
The first place she looked was the bathroom, but the girl hadn't been in there. Once she realized this, she calmly went to the concessions stand and asked the boy who was working it if he had seen a girl matching Bella's description. The boy said he had, and that she had gone outside, but hadn't come back in; this sent an alarm bell off in her mind, but for the wrong reason. "You better not have ditched me, Swan," she thought, walking outside.
Once outside, Jessica searched the theater parking lot for Bella's truck, which wasn't hard to find since it stood out like a sore thumb next to the newer cars in the lot. Relieved, she slowly made her way to the car to see if Bella was waiting inside. However, her relief was short-lived as she realized the girl wasn't there. "What the hell?" she thought, a feeling of unease slowly creeping up inside her.
Jessica walked back to the theater and walked back to the concession stand. The boy over the counter smiled at her but frowned once he notice the girl's worried face. "Is everything alright ma'am, did you find your friend?" he asked.
Jessica shook her head. "No, I didn't. The weird thing is her car is still here, but I can't find her anywhere," she said.
The young man gave her a look of concern. "Well, there isn't anywhere else to go near here except the bar. You don't think she would have gone there, do you?" he asked.
Jessica repressed the urge to laugh at that. "Goody two-shoes, Swan, going to the bar. Now that would be the day," she thought. She eyed the teen warily. "I don't think so. Her dad is the chief of police back in Forks, plus she's not old enough yet," she said.
The other teen made an o expression of surprise. "I think I'd better get my manager then. She can assist you," he said.
Jessica gave him a thankful look. "Thank you... sorry, what's your name?" she asked.
The boy smiled at her. "Tim," he said, walking away to get his manager.
Jessica gave him a small smile back as he retreated. "Thanks, Tim," she said, before pulling out her cell phone to call her mom.
Back in Forks, Charlie Swan was asleep in his recliner when the ringing of the phone woke him up. Jumping up, he hurried over to answer it thinking it might be his daughter calling, "Hello? Bella, is that you?" he asked.
A woman's wary voice came on the line. "Hello, Chief Swan?" she asked.
Charlie's eyebrows raised up in surprise. "Mrs. Stanley? Well, this is a surprise. Is everything alright?" he asked.
On the other end of the phone, Charlie could hear Mrs. Stanley's voice hitch. "Not exactly. As you know, Bella and Jessica went to see a movie in Port Angeles tonight," she said. Surprise and relief filled Charlie. He knew Bella had mentioned going to see a film, but he hadn't thought she was serious. "Hello, Chief?" Mrs. Stanley's voice snapped him back to attention.
"I'm here. What's going on, Mrs. Stanley?" he asked.
Although he couldn't see her. Charlie thought Mrs. Stanley sounded like she was about to cry. "Chief, my daughter just called me from the theater. She didn't give me a lot of details, but she says she can't find Bella," she said.
Charlie was suddenly on alert. "What does she mean, she can't find Bella?" he asked, his voice slowly rising.
Mrs. Stanley sighed. "I don't know. All she said is that Bella's truck is still in the parking lot, but Bella is nowhere to be found," she said.
Charlie growled. "Mrs. Stanley, call your daughter back and tell her to stay put. I'm on the way," he said.
