Chapter 24
Brittany's POV
June brought our first wedding anniversary. Santana and I had decided that as our gifts to each other, we would redecorate our bedroom, since we hadn't when we'd moved in, and we couldn't really afford to go on a honeymoon like we'd wanted.
The process didn't talk long, since the room mostly just needed a fresh coat of paint and some new furniture, but it finally started to feel more like ours.
"Could we maybe go to Chillicothe this summer?" Santana asked the next morning.
"Where exactly is that?"
"Only about an hour from us," she replied. "There's a children's museum there that I think Everly would like and... it's where my cousin lives."
"Sure, we could visit your cousin. But why the sudden interest?" I asked.
"Well, I haven't seen most of my family since I came out, since most of them weren't the most supportive, but Carlos always was. I guess I was separating myself from him because of our family, but my mom recently told me he isn't in contact with them either. Plus, he's the father of the first baby I ever delivered, and I haven't seen her in years."
"The baby on your Instagram? The one who made you want to become a midwife?"
"Yeah. She's six already. I asked my cousin if he's be alright with us visiting, and he said he'd love that. Plus, he's never met Everly."
"Okay," I said, "then let's go to... what's the place?"
Santana laughed. "Chillicothe."
"Let's go to Chillicothe. Maybe next weekend?"
"Sounds good. Thanks, Britt."
"No problem."
When we arrived at Carlos' house the next weekend, I could tell Santana was a little nervous. She rang the doorbell, Everly in her arms, as I held most of our things.
"Hey, Santana!" a man who I could only assume was Carlos opened the door. "And this must be Brittany and Everly."
"Yeah," she replied. "It's good to see you again."
"You too. Come on in. You remember Ashley and Ava."
"Of course, hi Ash. And hi Ava."
The six year old looked at Santana curiously.
"Do you remember me?" Santana asked.
She shook her head.
"Oh, well, that's okay. My name is Santana. This is my wife Brittany and our daughter Everly."
Soon Everly was sitting next to Ava on the floor playing with their dolls (separately, but it was still cute), and the rest of us were sitting on the couches.
"I'm so glad you decided to come visit," Carlos said. "I've missed you so much."
"Me too," Santana replied. "It was so hard when most of our family rejected me, and I'm so glad you didn't. I always felt like we were on the same team, you know? Being the oldest cousins and bossing the others around when we were younger and everything."
I was happy to see Santana reunited with Carlos and loved to hear their childhood stories. Soon, I was joining in on the conversation with them and Ashley, so, so glad that we'd decided to come visit.
The summer after moving into our new place, there was a reunion planned for our glee club's members. Despite some resistance from Santana, we decided to go, and, since it was in the choir room (I don't know how they got the school to agree to that), we wanted to bring our daughter with to see the room she'd heard about, where her mommies fell in love, despite the fact that she probably didn't understand much of the stories we told her.
So, we packed overnight bags and headed into Lima, our daughter still loving the drive as much as she always had (except when she had been teething; that had been an absolute disaster).
We hadn't seen some of the glee club members in a long time, but we occasionally talked with Finn and Rachel, so we knew that we could talk with them. Stepping into that school after so long felt incredibly strange, and we met up with Finn and Rachel in the hallways, Finn carrying their three year old daughter, Grace, Rachel very pregnant. (While we'd known she was pregnant, we hadn't seen her in a while, so it came as a bit of a surprise.)
"When are you due?" I asked Rachel.
"Three weeks," she replied. "I personally hope he comes sooner."
"A boy? That's exciting!" I clearly was invested in their lives more than Santana was, and our daughter that she'd been holding in her arms was probably the most interested, constantly reaching out to Finn and Rachel's daughter.
"Yeah, we're excited," Finn said. "Are we ready to be back in the choir room?"
"Ready as I'll ever be," Santana mumbled under her breath.
Almost everyone was already there. There were only two other young kids in the room: Mike and Tina's son and Quinn's daughter. We hadn't been in contact with them, so we hadn't known if anyone else even had kids. A part of me wished we'd kept in contact with Quinn, as well as the others. Quinn's daughter looked close in age to ours.
"Hey! More kids!" Mike exclaimed, carrying his son over to us. "Unfortunately, the entire glee club only seems to have daughters, except for us."
"Rachel's having a boy soon," I said, smiling. "How old is your son?"
"He's four," Mike replied, "and clearly the oldest kid here. How old are yours?"
"Our daughter is three, and Brittany and Santana's is almost two," Rachel answered for us.
"Quinn's daughter is eighteen months, I think," Mike said. "Her daughter is the only thing she seems to talk about."
I continued connecting with Mike while Santana went over to Quinn with our daughter. I found it strange that one of our best friends from high school had had a girl only a few months after us, and we hadn't even known.
Soon, our little girl was running around with Finn and Rachel's daughter, Mike and Tina's son, and Quinn's daughter, who kept falling over. She was a little young, and maybe our daughter was too, but it was good to see all the glee kids playing together.
"What have you been up to?" I asked Quinn when we ended up beside each other after our daughters bumped heads.
"I've been busy with work," she replied. "I was married, but it didn't work out, so now any time I have at home is devoted to my daughter. What about you?"
"This girl keeps us pretty busy. Santana is working and I'm looking for a job. We got married a year ago last month."
"So, no glee wedding?" Quinn teased.
"No, we didn't want a big wedding. It was just our families and our friend Jessie. We didn't even invite Finn and Rachel, and they're really the only ones here we talk to frequently."
"Who would've thought that Brittany and Santana would become friends with Finn and Rachel?"
"It's a little surprising, but they visit Lima a lot, so we just started seeing them when they do," I said.
"You live in Lima?" she asked, clearly surprised.
"Columbus," I corrected.
"Why Columbus?"
"It's where Santana went to school, so I just moved there before she graduated. We stay there because it's where her job is and it's close to our families. I did live in Chicago for a few years, but it never felt like home, you know?"
"Yeah. We live in Pennsylvania, but if it wasn't for my job, I would leave in a heartbeat."
"What do you do?" I asked, a little shocked that Quinn had travelled so far just for a glee club reunion,
"I'm a social worker," she replied.
"You can do that anywhere."
"I know, but it's hard to make such big changes."
"Maybe, but they are worth it," I said, letting Everly run after the other kids again.
"Maybe."
A/N:
Hey! So, there will likely be a bit of a time jump coming soon in this story. Also, I might not be able to publish a chapter next Saturday, since I am starting college only a few days after that.
Anyways, thank you so much for reading!
