If someone sees this I am really happy that you have decided to read my first fanfic. This was in my head for a long time and I think that Kuvira and Baatar Jr. deserve their own love story. They are both very interesting and I hope we will see them more in the next comics. Next thing is that I am not a native English speaker so if there are some mistakes please forgive me. I tried my best.
This story is a Baavira fanfiction and main characters are Baatar Jr. and Kuvira. How their love story started and how they had to face all kinds of complication. There are also heartbreaking parts of their story which were really difficult to write but it gives us more info about their characters and motives they had. Please enjoy this story and let me know if you like it.
And don't worry. They will find happy ending but it will be long journey.

Zaofu 1 year after fall of Earth Empire and 9 months after events of comic: the Ruins of Empire
Korra and Asami were about to leave Zaofu and go back to Republic City. It was already nine months since Kuvira's trial ended and Korra came to Zaofu because of new infrastructural plans for Republic City. New portal to the spirit world needed to be protected and Baatar Senior designed some new plans for it. When Korra and Asami were heading to the airship station across Suyin's gardens someone called her name. "Avatar Korra! Please wait!". Korra and Asami turned around and saw Kuvira runing close to them...
Kuvira was under house arrest for nine months now and as Su said she really had changed. She was locked in her room most of the time but she also had duties in gardens around Su's house and had to help with other chores so she didn't have to be locked all days. Kuvira did bad things in the past and many people would harm her if they knew that the great uniter ended up only with house arrest. So being arrested was kind of a protection for her.
When Kuvira reached to Korra and Asami her breathing was fast because of runing. She was wearing long beige trousers and light green top. Her hair was in one braid which she used to wear before leaving Zaofu years ago.
Kuvira was standing in front of Korra and Asami and it was visible she can't find words. She stood quietly while looking on the ground.
Korra looked at her and asked in surprise "What do you want Kuvira?"
Kuvira looked at her again and finally said "Avatar Korra... please.. take away my earthbending."
Korra and Asami were shocked from what they just heard. They looked at each other and then they looked back at Kuvira. "Why would you want something like that? You proved that you've changed and you helped us defeat rest of empire soldiers." Korra said. "Bending is a gift and you are very talented earthbender. It would be a shame if Zaofu lost such a powerful metalbender."
"I agree with Korra. You might did bad things in the past but taking away your bending would be such a waste of talent." Asami said decisively.
Kuvira looked at them and then right into Korra's eyes. "Thank you for saying that but I've decided already. I don't care about my bending. It means nothing to me anymore... and I don't deserve it." she said in a guilty voice and there was one more hidden emotion in Kuvira's voice which Korra couldn't recognize. Maybe sadness, anger...
"Listen Kuvira... If I will do it there won't be a way back. This will take lots of spiritual energy and to be honest I don't like idea of 'wasting' your talent". Korra replied facing Kuvira. "What is the real reason Kuvira?"
"Kuvira ended their eye contact and turned around. She took a deep breath and then she started talking "My bending used to give me power... I've hurt so many people and destroyed many things. I was blinded by power and I lost that one thing which really mattered... I lost him. Baatar. I've lost his love, his support, his..." she sighed. "I will never forgive myself for using that gun against him... against everybody." she was now crying.
Korra and Asami looked at each other and Kuvira continued: "I know Baatar will never trust me again. I know I can't have his love again. And I would sell my soul if I could go back to that day in Republic City. I think about that every minute, every day. I will regret that decision forever. I 've chosen power over him... That's why I want you to take away my bending. I can't live with it. Only then I will show how much I regret it. I know he will hate me forever but at least I won't be able to hurt anyone again. " Kuvira was now shaking and her face was covered in tears.
Asami put her hand on Kuvira's shoulder and tried to comfort her. Korra was standing on the place like a statue. Toph taught her how to recognize if the person is lying or not. And Kuvira was telling the truth all the time.
Asami lead Kuvira to the close bench and all three of them sat down. "I see why you want me to take away your bending but do you really think it would solve something?" Korra asked.
"Avatar Korra... I 've lost so many things and people because of bending. I have too many bad memories connected with it." she cried. "My parents left me because I've hurt my mother while bending, my beloved Baatar and your friends were hurt by me and many other people too. I almost destroyed Republic City. And during one fight I... I lost..." Kuvira was now in trans and speechless, her breathing was heavy...
"Lost what?" Korra asked carefully.
Kuvira's face was covered with tears and after short pause she gained courage to speek:"If I wasn't an earthbender... I wouldn't be in that fight at Guru Laghima's Peak. I would be safe here in Zaofu and nothing would have happend to me. But as a captain of metalbending guards here in Zaofu I had to go fight and protect our city. I had to protect my country. It was my duty to protect the avatar..." her voice cracked. "Nobody except me and Baatar knew about it at that time but...in that fight... I...I lost our little baby." Kuvira said in the most heartbroken voice and her body was shaking."I was pregnant four years ago."
Asami and Korra looked at each other in disbelief and were really sad. They didn't have any idea about it. Kuvira and Baatar were about to have a baby in the past and Kuvira lost the baby while protecting Korra from the Red Lotus...
In this part we will return to Zaofu 5 years ago. Kuvira is 18 and Baatar is 19 years old.
Zaofu, 5 years ago
It was hot summer day and Kuvira was currently on her watch. She was wearing dark green guard uniform with armor on her chest and silver helmet. She was a Zaofu guard for almost two years now and she really liked her job.
Kuvira stopped walking when she reached the Zaofu City Center. She sighed and looked up to the sky while removing sweat from forhead with her hand. This was one of the biggest disadvanteges of Zaofu. All these metal houses and streets were like an oven in the summer.
Square was emptier than ussual because everybody was hiding in their houses in such a hot weather. Kuvira went closer to the fountain in the middle of the square and washed her face with cold water from the fountain. She felt much better now.
When she was about to leave the city square, the bell rang on the top of Zaofu Tower. It was 2 p.m. and her watch was officialy over now. "Finally" she said to herself.
Kuvira went back to the Guards' Residence where she lived since she became guard herself. The building was made from metal and glass... like all other things in Zaofu. Every guard had their own little apartment but most of them were empty because other guards lived with their families in the city.
Kuvira picked the roof apartment because she loved the view on the mountains around Zaofu. It was small apartment but Kuvira really liked it. It was her place which she could finally call home.
When she walked into bedroom she throw her armor on the floor and fully clothed fell on the bed.
Kuvira really wanted to go sleep but remembered that she needs to go on a dance practise with Suyin and other girls today. She was laying in her bed for a while and then went to have a shower. She felt relief when cold water ran over her body. She hated hot days like these.
It was 3:45 p.m. when she walked out of shower and started preparing for today's practise. Kuvira took on her training light green tank top and dark green trousers and her hair was in a long braid.
Kuvira left her apartment at 4 p.m. with a light brown bag on her shoulders, in which she had a towel and dance shoes, but then she realized she will be in the gym too early because dance practise should start at 5 p.m.
Normally, Kuvira would go for a walk in that spare time but today was so hot weather that she decided to wait in the gym until dance practise starts.
The gym was located close to Beifong's Residence where she used to live for so many years. Kuvira could still live there but she decided to move out to her new apartment in the Guards' Residence. Suyin wasn't happy about that but she respected Kuvira's decision.
Kuvira reached the gym quiet fast and when she opened a massive door to the gym the place was empty. Kuvira put her bag on the bench in the corner and slowly walked to the middle of the gym.
It was nice to have this place just for herself. Kuvira took a deep breath and closed her eyes... Then she started dancing...
She was dancing on her tip toes and looked elegant as a swan. It was her new dance routine which she will perform during Zaofu anniversary festival. Kuvira danced for about five minutes and was in her own world. She felt so relaxed while dancing and it was something she really enjoyed. Then out of nowhere she heard a familiar voice.
"Wow. That's really beautiful." Baatar said while standing in the doorway. "You are really beautiful" he thought for himself. Kuvira looked like fairy. Baatar always remembered her with her serious face expression and seeing her like this was completely new for him. She changed a lot since he saw her for the last time. Baatar couldn't take his eyes from her...
Kuvira nearly fell on the floor when she saw him. His appearance really changed since they were younger. He was much higher and gained muscles. Baatar left Zaofu when he was 15 and was studying at university in Ba Sing Se. He was coming back home from time to time but he managed to graduate two years earlier and he became the youngest engineer in the Earth Kingdom. He arrived back to Zaofu just two days ago. Baatar was wearing dark green trousers and olive t-shirt with metal necklace which is typical for all Beifongs. "Baatar, you are back." Kuvira said with smile. "How long have you been standing there?" Kuvira was now nervous but she tried to hide it.
"Long enough." Baatar replied with a soft smile on his face. "But you don't have to worry... your dancing is perfect."
Kuvira gave him a mischievous look with a little smile. They grew up together and knew each other for years but when they became teenagers things got awkward between them ... so they didn't talk much since then.
"And what are you doing here? "Kuvira asked Baatar. "I didn't know you were exercising."
Baatar smiled. "I am not. Or at least not that often as I would like but... I was actually installing new technology here." he finally said.
"Which technology?" Kuvira asked curiously.
Baatar looked right into her eyes and wanted to say something but no words came out... after few seconds he finally said: "Follow me. I will show you that." he went to near hallway and then continued down stairs to engine room.
"The room was really small but full of machines and technologies. Kuvira was kind of confused from all of that but Baatar on the other hand looked really confident. He was always good with technologies.
Baatar then stopped close to one machine which was visibly new. "That's it." he said. "This is my new invention." he said proudly like if it was his child.
Kuvira couldn't help but laugh. "What is it for?" she asked curiously.
Baatar fixed position of his glasses and then started explaining: "This machine is cooling the air inside of building. It is powered by electricity and it is actually really quiet. It's not like that old cooling machines we used to have before. These ones are much better and it allows us to control the tempereture in just a few seconds. It was really needed in hot days like this one.
"That's great!" Kuvira was amazed. "You are really smart, Baatar. And how do you work with it?" she asked.
"Baatar smiled and said: "Look here." he said and Kuvira got down on her knees and looked closely while Baatar continued with explaining. "These buttons control temperature and you can change the intensity of cooling as you like. The air travels in these tubes and proces of cooling is done in this area" he pointed on one part of machine and was now so close behind Kuvira that she could feel his warm breath on her neck. Kuvira was shivering and hoped that Baatar didn't noticed anything. She wasn't focusing on Baatar's explanation of the technology anymore and she could only think about how close he was. It was completly new feeling for her.
"I hope we will have these machines in all houses as soon as possible. It would really help in days like this." Kuvira finally said.
"Yeah. We are working on it with my dad. We should start with installing next week." Baatar said proudly.
"That's great." she replied. When Kuvira stood up and turned around she was now facing Baatar. There was just a small gap between them and they stood in a awkward silence for a few seconds.
"I should probably go now. Dance practise will start soon." Kuvira said quietly.
"Yeah I should go as well." Baatar replied as they walked out of engine room and continued back to the gym.
"Thank you for showing me your new invention." Kuvira said facing Baatar.
"It was nice to talk to you again." Baatar said with smile on his face and Kuvira gave him a warm smile as well.
"See you soon, Baatar."
"See you soon, Kuvira." Baatar replied as he was walking out of the gym. When the door closed behind him... the picture of dancing Kuvira occured in his mind again. He smiled for himself and went home.
At the same time on the other side of the door Kuvira was thinking about that feeling she had when she felt Baatar's warm breath on her skin. It was a completly new emotion for her. But her thoughts were interupted by other members of dance group who just walked in.
She couldn't wait to see him again.
So that was the first chapter. Did you like it? This was a moment when Baatar and Kuvira felt the first spark between them. Our lovebirds will meet again soon so I hope you will stay tuned.
And about that "cooling machine"...yeah it is air conditioning :D I just didn't know how to call it in a more fancy way. And I am sorry if technical terminology is not correct here but I tryed my best and I needed Baatar to have a reason to appear in the gym :D If somebody is interested air conditioning was invented in 1902 so according to LOK universe it already exist at this time but Baatar created a new upgrade and more sofisticated technology which is currently only in Zaofu.
