Zaofu, week after dance practise

Baatar was alone most of the time. He spend time in laboratory or father's office but when he had free time he rarely talked to others.

Wei and Wing spend most of their time in gardens playing power disk and Opal loved reading. She was even bigger bookworm than Baatar himself but they were always really close. He used to read her stories when she was little and as a nonbenders they had that special connection as well. And Huan... was simply Huan. He always spent most of his time alone in the studio and was in his own world.

Baatar wasn't in a good mood today. One of his new inventions didn't go as planed and it broke. Baatar was hiding that new project from his father because he finally wanted to create something on his own. He didn't want to assist his father for the rest of his life. He will have to built it all over again.

When Baatar got to his room he went straight to shower. He let cold water fall on his head and body for long time and his hands rested on the wall. Today was a long day he thought for himself.

Guards' residence, 3 hours earlier

Kuvira and other guards were on a night shifts meeting in Guard's residence. They were all in captain Rey's office. "Dao will have a night watch in airship station and Lia with Kai will be in the city center. Theo will be in Beifongs's residence and I will have a night watch in the southern and eastern block." captain Rey said. "Any questions?" he asked.

"Captain Rey... I can't have a night watch today." Theo said nervously. "My daughter has birthday today and I promised her we will celebrate it together this evening. I am sorry captain." he said while looking on the floor.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" captain said angrily. "I need one metalbending guard in Beifongs's residence tonight. I'm sorry Theo but I can't change it anymore."

"I am sorry. I forgot to tell you." Theo said sadly.

Kuvira was standing in the corner and thought about captain's words for a while. "I volunteer. I will guard Beifongs' residence instead of Theo tonight." Kuvira said decisively and everyone was now looking at her.

"But Kuvira you worked overtime all week. You deserve to rest." captain said.

"I will do it." Kuvira replied and there was visible relief in Theo's face.

Captain was looking at Kuvira and after few seconds he said: "Alright then...Kuvira will have night watch in Beifongs's residence tonight."

Kuvira nodded and captain continued in talking. "Theo I expect you to take Kuvira's shift next week so she can finally have some rest."

Theo nodded and said: "Yes sir." Captain stood up and said: "Now go to work everyone."

After captain Rey left the room Theo rushed to Kuvira. "Thank you so much Kuvira. I owe you." he said.

"No problem." Kuvira said with smile on her face. She knew Theo's daughter. Little Mia. She was four years old and Kuvira really liked her. She often went on dance practise with her mother and watched how others dance. She was their audience and was really excited all the time.

"I will bring you piece of birthday cake tomorrow." Theo replied with smile on his face and Kuvira nodded.

Later she went to Beifongs's residence. It was usually really quiet place and guarding it should be easy.

When she reached the residence it was already dark. Today was a full moon. So bright moonlight was all over Zaofu and stars were perfectly visible as well. Today was beautiful night.

She was in half of her night watch when she heard strange noises coming from the roof. Kuvira ran closer to the building and tried to find the source of that noise. But she couldn't find anything.

Five minutes later she saw strange swadows on the roof. She moved her hand and metal rope attached to one of the pillars and pull herself up. Kuvira was now on the roof.

"Who's there!" she called. Kuvira looked around the roof again but couldn't find anyone. When she was about to go back down to gardens she heard that sound again. It was coming from the balcony.

Kuvira ran on the edge of the roof and jumped down on the balcony. Someone was standing there. She caught that person with metal rope and it wrapped around him. Then the person fell on the floor.

"I caught you!" Kuvira said strictly. "Who are you and why are you here?"

"Kuvira it's just me!" Baatar said and he was still in shock. "Let me go."

"Oh no. I am sorry. Are you alright?" she rushed closely to him and helped him stand up from the ground.

"Yeah. But I just had a heart attack." Baatar said.

"I thought you were thief or something." Kuvira replied and helped Baatar on the near bench.

Baatar was wearing black sleeping shorts and without his glasses he looked completly different. Kuvira couldn't help but look at his muscular arms and chest. She had to admit that she really liked what she saw. When did she start to care about things like that? She thought for herself. Then Baatar started talking.

"A week ago... When I said I would see you soon I thought it would be under different circumstences." he said while laughing.

Kuvira laughed as well and said: "It is more interesting this way."

Now they were both laughing. Baatar moved on the bench and created place for Kuvira to sit. "You can have a break and sit down next to me if you want." Baatar said.

"I can't Baatar. I have to work." Kuvira replied sadly.

Baatar thought about what she said for a while and then said: "Your work is to guard and protect Beifongs. I am a Beifong. You can protect me." he said with grin on his face. "Besides... everyone is asleep now and you can easily watch over all residence from here." Baatar's room was on the highest floor so it really had the best view.

Kuvira didn't like the idea of having a break but she had to admit she could easily watch over residence from the balcony. After few seconds she said decisively: "Okay. I will stay here but just for a while."

Baatar smiled and Kuvira sat down next to him. She looked really beautiful in the moonlight he thought for himself.

"And why are you awake? It's already 3 in the morning?"Kuvira asked suspiciously.

"I couldn't sleep. I was thinking about my new project which failed all evening so I've decided to go here on fhresh air. When I returned inside I heard somebody walking on the roof." he said. "I thought I was halucinating and that Lake fairy decided to visit me." now he was smiling. "And then out of nowhere I ended up wrapped in metal rope."

"Sorry for that once again." Kuvira said with guilt on her face. "And I am sad that your project failed. If I could help you somehow with it just tell me. I owe it to you for what happened tonight." Kuvira was now looking into his eyes.

"It's okay. And thank you. I would actually need a metalbender like you to help me with some parts. Things would get much easier." Baatar replied. "Life is easier when you are bender. I have to create all metal parts with hammer and press machine and it takes hours."

Kuvira thought about what he said for a while and then said:"I see...but why didn't you tell anybody to help you with that? I am sure your brothers or father would-"

Baatar stopped Kuvira "No" he said strictly. "I don't need their help. I want to do it myself. Not just assist my father all the time. I want to show everyone that I am as good as him. That's why I'm keeping it secret." He was now tense.

Kuvira saw that Baatar was upset because of it. She knew that he was always helping his father but never got much credit for that. "Baatar..." Kuvira said quietly and was deciding whether she should put her hand on his shoulder to comfort him or not. But then Kuvira dared to do something different. She took Baatar's hand to hers and looked into his eyes. Baatar was surprised by that but he really liked it. It really calmed him down. "I understand it. But I want you to know that letting somebody help you is not bad thing or weakness. You don't have to be alone. And I want you to know that you are the most talented engineer I know." Kuvira gave him a warm smile.

She was right. Being alone wasn't the best way. Baatar smiled on her in return. "Thank you Kuvira. I really needed someone to talk about it with me."

"You're welcome." she replied and realized that she was still holding his hand. She awkwardly let it go and said: "It's really beautiful night, isn't it?" she was now looking at stars.

"It really is." Baatar replied but instead of sky he was looking at Kuvira. Her hair was in a braid and a few baby hair was moving around her face in a breeze. She looked beautiful in the moonlight and her guard armor was shining.

They sat in quiet for a while and then Kuvira asked: "When I was helping you stand up you said you were halucinating or that Lake Fairy came to visit you. Who is Lake Fairy?" she grined.

Baatar laughed and said: "Well... Lake Fairy is a mythical creature who lives in mountain lake near Zaofu. Apparently she visit's our valley when it's full moon and she leaves white shining stones on people's windows. It is said that these stones will bring you good luck. It was in one of Opal's fairytale books. I used to read to her when she was younger."he expained.

"Well... I am not much of a fairy." Kuvira laughed.

"You were walking on the roof and it is full moon. I was suspicious." Baatar said seriously while trying not to he couldn't and now they were both laughing. When they stopped Kuvira and Baatar sat in quiet for few more minutes.

"It's too late. I need to go back to work and you should have at least some sleep tonight." Kuvira said. Baatar agreed. "You are right. And thank you that you will help me with that new project."

"No problem." Kuvira said and stood up from the bench. Now she was facing him. "Actually I have day off next week. We could work on your project that day."

"That sounds great. See you next week then." Baatar replied with smile on his face. Kuvira nodded and now they were both standing.

"Good night, Baatar."she said.

"Good night, Kuvira." Baatar replied. Kuvira then moved her hand and metal rope attached to near pillar. She jumped down from the balcony and elegantly landed on the ground. Baatar waved at her and she waved at him. Then Kuvira dissapeared in gardens.

Baatar closed the balcony door and fell on his bed. His last thought before falling asleep was how good Kuvira's warm hand felt in his own.

When Baatar woke up he sat on his bed for a while. Then he decided to open the window and let some fresh air fill his room. When he opened the window there was shining white stone on the ledge.

Baatar smiled for himself and watch over gardens but couldn't see anybody.

"She really is a fairy." he said.
