Zaofu, 5 days after Kuvira's night watch
"We need to go to Basing Se tomorrow. " Suyin said during family dinner.
All members of Beifong family were sitting in the dining room in Beifongs's residence. They had salmon with vegetable and Huan tryed to style the food to some pattern on the plate. Wei and Wing were arguing about who won the power disk game today and Opal was reading a book while eating.
Baatar was sitting on his place and as the only one payed attention to his parents. "Why are you going there?" he asked.
"We need permition to build new railway from Zaofu to Republic City." his father replied.
"I thought we already had all permitions." Baatar said in surprise. He helped his father with designing new railway technology which allows trains to move much faster than ever before.
"It's not that easy Junior." his father replied.
"We have permition of Yu Dao governor because part of the new railway will be build on their area but we need special permition of the Earth Queen as well." Suyin said.
"I see. So good luck with the Earth Queen. I heard she's a little bit crazy." Baatar giggled and he caught attention of Wei and Wing.
"Junior stop! Don't say things like that about the queen. You never know who can hear you. She has her spies everywhere." Suyin said strictly. Now all his siblings were looking at them. Baatar hated when he was called Junior but he had to admit his mother was right.
"Your mother is right Junior." his father said. "And this applies on all of you. You have to be careful about what you are saying." he was now talking to all children. "The Earth Queen is... very sensitive about Republic City because she takes it as a theft of the Earth Kingdom area."
"I thought her father agreed with founding Republic City?" Huan asked.
"At the end he did but many citizens of the Earth Kingdom wasn't happy about that." Suyin said.
"I hope there will be no problems with that permission." Baatar said and continued in eating. Dinner went as usual and rest of the day was calm in Beifongs's residence.
When Baatar came to his room he looked at white shining stone on the shelf which Kuvira gave to him.
Kuvira should come to his laboratory tomorrow and he couldn't wait to spend time with her.
The next day, Guard's residence, Zaofu
Kuvira had day off so she stayed in her bed longer than usual. Despite that fact it was only half of June the temperatures were high as in August.
Kuvira got up from the bed and opened the window. She was wearing light green silk nightrobe and her hair was down. When she looked out of the window she saw one airship flying to the east and on the west side there were really dark clouds. There will be a big storm today.
She let the window open and then went to bathroom. She looked at herself in the mirror and then took off her nightrobe. It fell on the ground and then she stepped on cold tiles in the shower.
She should meet Baatar today and for some reason Kuvira was really nervous. It was that new emotion which she felt everytime she was with him. She wondered if he felt the same about her.
After having a shower Kuvira couldn't decide what to wear. She wore her guard uniform or training clothes most of the time but this was something special. She wanted to look perfect. Kuvira didn't know when she started to care about these things... she was always very practical and not interested in boys at all but there was something about Baatar that she just couldn't ignore.
Kuvira ended up having her hair in a braid and wearing olive leggins and dark green dress with metal belt and necklace. It was typical Zaofu clothing but it still looked really nice. She looked at clock and realized it was already time to go. Kuvira locked her apartment and went downstairs to the vestibule.
When she was leaving Guards' residence few raindrops fell on her. She looked up to the sky and it was now very cloudy. The storm will be there soon. Kuvira rushed to Beifongs's residence before other guards close metal domes above Zaofu.
Metal domes were shields which were always closing during storms because it protected all metal buildings in Zaofu against lightnings.
It redirected lightnings to near powerplant and created source of energy for next days.
When Kuvira came to Beifongs's residence Baatar was already waiting for her. He was wearing his casual clothes with metal necklace and glasses. "Hi Kuvira." he greeted her and was amazed by how beautiful she was. It was unusual to see her not wearing guard uniform.
"Hi Baatar." Kuvira replied with a warm smile while walking closer to him.
"I wasn't sure if you would make it on time because the domes were closing quickly." he said. "It's gonna be a big storm." Baatar was concerned. Then in a second they heard the first thunder from the outside.
"I am glad these domes protect us." Kuvira said and heavy rain was now falling on the domes so it's roof was like a drum.
"Yeah. It has many functions." Baatar replied and they were now walking to his laboratory across long hallway.
When Baatar opened the door the place was huge. Kuvira never actually been there when she used to live in Beifongs's residence. This was Baatar's place. It was a bit chaotic... there were big machines and project plans everywhere and in the corner there was a drawing board. On the other side of the room there was a cabinet full of chemicals. Baatar was always good at chemistry. Even more talented than his father but unfortunately they didn't work on chemical projects that much. They always focused on industry machines and modern gadgets.
"So? Can I help you with something?" Kuvira asked. Baatar nodded and went closer to one big machine hidden under cover.
Baatar put cover away and said: "That's it. This should be a new version of engine for Satomobiles. I wanted it to be more powerful and to have smaller fuel consumption. It should be much quieter as well."
"It sounds interesting." Kuvira looked closely and saw that one part of engine was broken so she asked: "What went wrong here?" she was pointing on that place while looking at Baatar. She knew it was his secret project so he spend plenty of time on that.
Baatar sighed went closer and then said: "These metal parts were too thin so it broke under that big pressure. I tried to use softer materials so the engine wouldn't be that heavy. But... it's complicated. It takes ages till I create these metal parts and it always brokes."
"Well I can help you with that parts. I will use my metalbending. Just tell me which shapes do you need." Kuvira said with hope in her voice.
Baatar smiled at her and said: "Thanks Kuvira." Then he walked to his working table and grabbed one rounded metal part. "I would need something similar to this but could you make the walls thicker, please?"
Kuvira was now standing next to Baatar and was looking at that metal part. "Yeah. It shouldn't be a problem." she said and in that same moment they heard loud thunder coming from the outside.
"Ou. That's really bad storm. I hope my parents made it safely to Basing Se." Baatar said with concerns in his voice. Airships are really dangerous in strong wind like that.
"I am sure they did. This storm was coming from the west and Basing Se is on the east." Kuvira said in a comforting voice. "They will be miles away now."
"Yeah you are right." Baatar said and started to work on other parts. When he was sure Kuvira is not looking at him...he stared at her. He felt something he never felt before...
Kuvira grabbed a piece of metal and started to shape it as Baatar said. She had to admit that being a metalbender was a big advantage. After few minutes she finally had that part done and called on Baatar: "Hey Baatar, I think I have it."
Baatar looked at Kuvira and then heard next thunder. He went closer to her and was now standing behind her and looked over her shoulder on the table. The metal part was nearly finished. "Good job Kuvira. Just one more small detail." he was now really close to her.
Her hair scents like roses he thought for himself. Baatar gently put his hand on hers and showed her how to finish that metal part. Her hands were so soft he thought for himself.
Kuvira felt his warm breath on her neck and wave of electricity ran through her body when their hands connected. She didn't want this moment to end.
After a while Kuvira turned her head on him and looked right into his eyes. Baatar was looking at her as well. No words were needed. Baatar took Kuvira's other hand to his and their bodies moved closer and closer. They were about to kiss...When their lips nearly touched... loud thunder was heard from the outside and all lights in laboratory blackouted. baatar and Kuvira fell apart.
Kuvira and Baatar couldn't see each other. Kuvira heard Baatar's steps from somewhere and a few seconds later he returned with candle.
It was kind of awkward now. "I checked the system and this blackout is everywhere in Zaofu." Baatar said uncomfortably and put the candle on the table.
Zaofu being a modern city caused that during blackouts like this... nothing was working. Most of technologies were powered by electricity and without it... system colapsed really easily. Baatar walked closer to her.
"Backup sources should start working in a few seconds." he said.
Kuvira didn't know what to say. They nearly kissed... Kuvira was glad that Baatar couldn't see her blushing because there was lack of light in laboratory.
"I guess your new project will have to wait for another time." Kuvira said while standing close to the table.
Baatar wanted to say something but before he could talk the phone started ringing next door... Kuvira and Baatar looked at each other and then went to Baatar's father office. They walked closer to his working table and Baatar answered the phone.
"Halo, it's Baatar Beifong Junior. Who's there?" Baatar asked. Someone answered immidiately.
"It's doctor Lao. I need to talk to your father. There had been an accident in the hospital and two out of three backup sources of energy aren't working." he said nervously.
Kuvira heard what doctor said and immediately realized that there's no chance for hospital to make it only with one backup source. Hospital in Zaofu is really modern and everything is powered by electricity. Without it...everything would colaps.
"I am sorry but my father is currently in Basing Se. I am afraid that hospital will have to postpone planned surgeries." Baatar was now looking nervously out of the window.
"Oh no." doctor sighed. "We need backup sources. We can postpone planned surgeries but we have three patients on life support now. If the last backup source fails... I am afraid we won't be able to save them. There are no waterbending healers in Zaofu at the moment." doctor's voice cracked.
Baatar was shocked. He had some idea about how new technology of backup sources work but it was mainly his father's project.
"You are engineer as well, aren't you? You could fix that backup source." doctor said with hope in his voice.
"I am not sure if I can do it. My father designed it on his own and I am afraid I don't know how to fix it." Baatar said with concern in his voice. His hands were now shaking.
"Please. You are our only hope. We have only 30 minutes left till the last backup source fails." doctor was now desparate.
Baatar stood on the place like statue. Could he fix it... he wasn't sure.
Kuvira saw that he's insecure. She walked closer to him and put her hands on his cheeks. "Baatar... you can do it." she said with hope. He looked into her eyes as she continued. "You are as good engineer as your father. Maybe even better. I believe in you." she gave him warm smile.
Baatar was looking at her face for a while and then said to the phone: "Okay... I will be there as soon as possible." then he hang up.
Baatar grabbed the bag with tools and then took Kuvira's hand to his. "Come. We need to hurry up." he said and they ran out of Beifongs's residence hand in hand.
There was a heavy rain outside and lightnings were everywhere above them. Their clothes was wet immediately. They had to run across meadow between Beifongs's residence and city center. The grass was really high so it was complicated to move. They couldn't use the train between closed domes because it was powered by electricity and Kuvira couldn't move the whole train with her metalbending on her own.
Kuvira and Baatar were running to the city center as fast as they could. Kuvira was actually surprised how fast Baatar was. She always thought he was in his laboratory all the time and that he was never really into sports.
When they reached the City Center Kuvira used her metalbendig to open one part of the dome for them to get inside. They couldn't catch breath but they were still rushing to the hospital. The streets were emty...everybody was hidden in their houses.
At the main entranece of hospital doctor Lao was already waiting for them. "I am so glad you are here. Please follow me. We have only 15 minutes left." he said and they rushed to hospital's engine room. There was still bad storm outside and thunders were heard all the time. All three of them rushed downstairs to the engine room.
When they finally reached it the engine room was enormous. Much bigger than the one in the gym. There were many machines and tubes everywhere. Baatar immediately knew where to go. "Backup sources are usually placed here." He ran to the corner of the room where three big machines stood.
Kuvira and doctor Lao follewed him. Baatar got down on his knees and started looking at different cables. It was all new for him and he was nervous.
"I need some light." Baatar turned at doctor Lao and he ran outside of engine room to get a battery torch. Baatar put away all covers of machine and tryed to understand where was a mistake.
A minute later doctor came back with a battery torch. "Kuvira please could you hold the battery torch?"
"Of course." Kuvira said and was worried if they will be able to fix it. She took battery torch from doctor and rushed closer to Baatar.
Baatar was looking at all cables and tried to understand it's system."Doctor Lao, I need 20 inches of copper wire." Baatar said and started to search something in his bag with tools. Doctor ran outside to find some.
"Do you know what's wrong?" Kuvira asked while looking at Baatar.
"I think I found it." Baatar replied and pointed on some cables. "These cables burnt because of that lightning and it caused that backup sources couldn't be turned on."
"So you can repair it?" Kuvira said with hope in her voice.
"I know how to repair it in old backup sources but cables in these new ones are arranged in completly different way." Baatar replied nervously. "I will have to improvise." he grabbed a few cables and tools from his bag and ran closer to the machine. He was really nervous. Kuvira was still holding battery torch and saw that his hands were shaking so she put her hand on his shoulder. Baatar noticed that gesture and it calmed him down. He needed to be concentrated now.
"I have it!" doctor called and ran close to them. He gave Baatar the copper wire and nervously said: "There's only eight minutes left. That one backup source wont last much longer." He couldn't catch breath.
"I will do what I can." Baatar replied nervously and started replacing new cables. The time was running really fast and after few minutes Kuvira saw that light on the wall started to fizzle.
Baatar was still replacing the cables. He didn't knew this new system of cable connection and was trying to understand it as fast as he could. Kuvira was now shaking as well.
"The life support is starting to colapse!" one nurse ran into the engine room and was really worried. "Oh no." doctor Lao sighed. The darkness started to fill the engine room. Everything started to colapse...
"Baatar, you can do it." Kuvira said quietly. "I am sure you can."
Baatar looked at her and felt how drops of sweat ran on his face. Then he connected a few cables with copper wire. He wasn't sure if it will work but it was the only way how to do it in such a hurry... "C'mon!" Baatar said and pressed the control button. The lights were now almost fizzled.
"C'mon! Turn on!" Baatar was now desperate... Kuvira closed her eyes and prayed to spirits. It didn't work.
Baatar took of his glasses and removed the sweat from his forhead. He was hopeless...
But then out of nowhere... Lights started to turning on and backup source now produced loud noises. It was working. Baatar did it...
"Baatar you did it!" Kuvira said in excitement. Doctor Lao was now jumping hapilly around the room. Baatar felt relief and sat on the ground. Drops of sweat were still running on his face.
"Thank you so much! If it weren't for you...I don't wanna even think about what could happen. I will have to tell everyone that Baatar Beifong Junior is as good as his father. Your parents raised really talented son." Doctor said and shaked his hand. Then he ran to check his patients.
Kuvira felt relief and joy as well. She knew he could do it. He really impressed her.
Baatar and Kuvira were now alone in the engine room. Baatar stood up and was still shaking. Kuvira throw the battery torch away and hugged Baatar thightly. She felt relief that everyone was safe now and she was proud of Baatar. Baatar wrapped his hands around Kuvira and lifht her up.
Kuvira decided to kiss Baatar on his forhead and then she smiled at him widely. "I knew you could do it." she said with joy in her voice.
"I couldn't do it without you." Baatar replied and then looked right into her eyes. He put Kuvira on the ground and his hands were still wrapped around her waist. They were looking at each other.
"Well...today's afternoon didn't go as planned." Baatar said sadly. He wanted to say more things but Kuvira put a finger on his lips. "Shhh..in that case...we will have to meet again." Kuvira said with smile on her face and Baatar gave her a smile as well.
It was here again. That moment... but this time they weren't disturbed by anyone. Baatar and Kuvira moved closer to each other and then their lips met in a long kiss. Kuvira felt nice warm feeling inside of her as this was her first kiss ever...
The wave of electricity ran through their bodies and in that moment they knew they were meant for each other...They hugged tightly and enjoyed each other's presence...
Sooo did you like it? I am sorry if technical vocabulary is not correct but as alwyas I tried my best. The next thing is that I think that Kuvira and Baatar's relationship wasn't that rushed. They are both kind of conservative with their feelings so it will take some more time to get their relationship on next level (if you know what I mean :D)
