~CHAPTER 1~
Where am I?
My body feels weird...
I feel a pleasant breeze.
"Hello there!" a friendly voice chirped.
Startled, Selene shot upright in a sitting position. She saw a Deerling standing beside her, smiling.
"Thank goodness you're awake!" Deerling breathed. "You weren't moving or talking, and I was getting worried for a second. You sure know how to give a Pokemon a good scare!"
It took a second for the speech to sink in.
"Y-you can talk?!" Selene shrieked. She instantly backed up against the trunk of a tree. The bushes at the base of its trunk loomed over her...
Wait... over me?
She didn't have time to process a calculation for the strange proportions of the forest, however, as the Deerling continued its onslaught of talking.
"Of course I can! All Pokemon here can talk."
"N-no they can't," Selene protested. "Pokemon just exist in video games and TV shows and cards and figurines and-and they only say their name when they talk."
Deerling cocked its head, eyes narrowing in concern. "You sure you're okay? I mean, if Pokemon aren't supposed to talk, then why are you, a Snivy, talking to me?"
Selene shook her head. "I'm a human, not a Snivy. If anyone is not okay, it's you for thinking that!"
"You're funny," Deerling chuckled.
"But it's true!" Selene retorted sharply.
"Then go look in that pond over there if you really think you're a human. If humans even do exist, they live a long ways away from here." Deerling jerked her head to a nearby puddle of water, which Selene sauntered over to.
Talking Pokemon... bushes that are unnaturally big... Pokemon being real in general... All these thoughts geared through Selene's head before she looked into the puddle. She hoped nothing had gotten out of place in her strange travel to the new world.
"ACK!" she screamed, utterly freaked out by the reflection staring back at her.
Her nose had elongated into a green-and-yellow snout. Her eyes were more round and brown, with pupils in more slit-like shapes. Two small yellow vines formed a collar around her next, which was placed above two leaf-shaped hands. The rest of her body was curved into a U, with a plant-like tail at the end. Her feet were also yellow, and were shaped somewhat similar to her collar. She was... she was...
A Snivy! she thought in utter disbelief.
Panic set into her mind. She spun around anxiously, not sure how to get used to her new form.
"See?" Deerling said. "I told you so!"
"I-I'm not supposed to be a Snivy," Selene reassured the Pokemon. "I'm really a human. This is terrible! I can't be a Snivy."
"Woah, woah, hold your Horseas," Deerling slowed. "One thing at a time. Start with one question, then move on to the next."
"Fine, fine. Where am I?"
"Forestrier," Deerling replied. "One of the smaller towns in Dandalavune. It's surrounded by lush forests and a large lake to the town's west."
"Alright, then," Selene sighed. "How do you even be a Snivy?"
"Well, err," Deerling stuttered. "I dunno, since I'm not a Snivy. But, since we're both Grass-Types..."
Snap, I have a Typing too! Selene realized. Being a Pokemon is just too weird.
"I guess it might be easier for you to move around, since Snivy stand on two legs just like humans. Or, at least, as the stories say they do. But anyways, there are some parts that humans don't have. Like your tail is there."
Selene examined her newly-sprouted tail. "Yeah?"
"It's practically a muscle and bone, so you move it like you would an arm or a leg." Deerling lifted a hoof to beckon her for an attempt. "Go ahead and try it."
Selene very tentatively located the tail muscle and tweaked it. Sure enough, when she wanted it to move left, it moved left, but when she chose for it to move the opposite direction, it would do so under her will.
"What about the other parts of me? Like comically-shaped hands?" Selene pressed.
"Hang on a minute, we're getting there," Deerling promised. "It's not much different from your normal way of movement, and I think it's best to discover the rest with practice. I've given you the basics, so all you can do now is try your best."
The two stood awkwardly gazing around at their scenery. Deerling finally broke the silence.
"So, now that we've gotten over with this business, I think we need some proper introductions," she said. "I'm Kichi."
"I'm Selene. It's nice to meet you." Selene stuck out her hand and shook it with Kichi's hoof.
"Well, anyways," Kichi mumbled. "Do you want to... come over to the town? It's not far from here, and you can stay in my house for now."
Selene gave her agreement and she followed Kichi down a dirt path that entwined its way through the forest. Kichi stopped ocassionally to greet a passing-by Pokemon or observe an interesting berry.
"So," Kichi began as they neared the end of the forest. "What's your life like as a human?"
"Well it's..." Selene broke off. "I-I can't remember."
"You can't remember?" Kichi inquired, slightly shocked.
"Yeah," Selene replied. "It's like all my memories of my human life are gone. I just know my name and that I was a human... as well as everything we've done here in this world."
"That's very peculiar," Kichi mused. She was quiet for a few heartbeats as they entered the town through a wooden arch. "Maybe we can figure everything out later."
Selene stopped to admire the shops lining the street. A pair of Indeedee were selling their wood wares to a Mareep. Selene noticed that among their products were wooden jars, an intricately patterned rocking chair, and even a small bookshelf.
"Those are Mattia and Mattio," Kichi introduced. "They're both carpenters, and they put everything they make up for sale at the end of the month." She waved to the female Indeedee, who was removing a vase from its place on the store shelves.
"And over there..." Kichi gestured to a longer shop. "Is the berry store. It's run by Midnight."
An Absol passed a pouch of Oran Berries to a Bunnelby. The Bunnelby reached into the pouch and fished out a berry, already beginning to snack on the new treat.
Suddenly, three Pokemon swept past them. Selene counted a Yamper, Eevee, and Galarian Ponyta.
"Come on, we need to reach that board!" Eevee reminded them.
Board? What board? Selene wondered.
"There goes Team Bubble," Kichi cheerfully said, pointing to the three Pokemon. "They always want to be the first to the Rescue Team Board."
"Rescue Team Board?"
"Oh, yeah, I forgot that you didn't know about that!" Kichi exclaimed. "Basically, there's a huge system of rescue teams that venture in the Pokemon world, saving Pokemon in danger and going on crazy quests. A lot of Pokemon dream about becoming top rescue team members, but it's a real challenge."
Selene pondered the words. "Are you in a rescue team?"
"Me?" Kichi snorted. "Of course not! It's cool and all to watch Pokemon help each other, but I'm far too... not-brave to try that. I don't think I could ever do something like that in my life. Why do you ask?"
"J-just wondering," Selene quickly explained. She covered up the fact that she was somewhat interested in the rescue team concept, but didn't want her new acquaintance to know that.
Kichi halted at a large purple tent with a domed roof. "Here we are."
"Is this your house?" Selene asked.
"Nope," Kichi answered. "But I think it's something that will help us." She placed one hoof inside the tent. "Come on!"
Selene hesitantly followed her.
Kichi turned her head to explain their location. "This is the tent of The Wise Eeveelutions."
