Zaofu, 2 months later, Guard's residence
Baatar was staring at his fingers dancing in the sunlight casting trough the bedroom window. It was early noon and Kuvira and Baatar were resting after their morning which they spent together...
It was already December and Zaofu was covered in snow. Zaofu was always kind of isolated in winter because it is located in mountains and it's difficult to get there.
Baatar and Kuvira weren't able to go hiking in that cold weather so they were meeting mainly in Kuvira's apartment or Baatar's labaratory. But it was complicated. They still didn't tell anyone about their relationship and they needed more privacy for themselves now...
They tried to find every possible moment when they could be together and enjoy each others company.
Today Baatar woke up very early in the morning because he needed to repair electricity sources in Guard's residence. He was lucky that the sources broke as he could spent some more time with Kuvira if he will repair it quickly. So early in the morning Baatar rushed trough the city center to the Guard's residence. It was snowing and it was still dark outside. The streets were empty and most of street lamps were still off.
When Baatar got to the Guard's residence the janitor was sleeping as always... However it didn't mind him because he could easily get to Kuvira's apartment without being caught. Baatar went straight to the engine room to work on electricity sources. The demage wasn't that serious so Baatar repaired all cables in twenty minutes. He locked the engine room and secretly sneaked into Kuvira's apartment.
Kuvira didn't have to work this morning so she was already waiting for him. When Baatar knocked on the door Kuvira opened it and wrapped her arms around Baatar's neck. She greeted him with long passionate kiss ... Baatar lift her up and closed the door behind them...they headed straight to Kuvira's bedroom and spent wild morning together...
Later... their clothes was on the floor and Baatar's glasses were placed on it's usual place next to Kuvira's hair slide on the night table. They were laying in bed and Baatar's arm was wrapped around Kuvira who rested her head on his chest. Their naked bodies were covered with duvets...
Baatar felt amazing. He held Kuvira tightly and her fingers traveled his chest. It was so nice to be with Kuvira in this warm bed but he knew he will have to return to Beifongs's residence soon.
Relationship with Baatar was the happiest thing in Kuvira's life. She felt like finally having family and she knew that he really loves her the way she is... Kuvira rested her head on Baatar's chest and listened to his heartbeat. Kuvira loved the strong rythm of his heart and put a soft kiss on the place where his heart was.
"I want to be with you in this bed every night..." Kuvira said quietly and put soft kiss on Baatar's cheek. He smiled at her and gently caressed her long black hair.
"I want to spend rest of my life in this bed with you..." Baatar replied and Kuvira gave him a big smile in return. She knew they haven't got much time left and slowly climbed on the top of Baatar. She laid on his chest and their legs were tangled together.
Baatar gave her mischievous smile. He loved when Kuvira laid on his chest and her breasts were touching his warm skin...He wrapped his arms around Kuvira's back and they shared a loving kiss.
"I wish we had more time." Kuvira said and looked right into Baatar's eyes. She had to guard in the Southern block today and her watch will start in 1 p.m.. And Baatar needed to go back to Beifongs's residence because of meeting with other architects and engineers.
"We will have more time...I don't want to hide anymore." Baatar said and caressed Kuvira's beautymark on her cheek. Kuvira had one more beautymark on her lower belly and Baatar was the only person who knew about it.
"You are right. We should tell everyone. However I have to admit I will miss our secret dates. It was so romantic." Kuvira said with smile on her face.
Baatar giggled. "Oh yes." he replied and the memory of all secret kisses they shared ran through his mind. He will miss it as well.
Kuvira smiled and kissed Baatar again. His hands traveled to her lower back and then he kissed Kuvira's neck passionately.
Then they heard alarm. It was already 12 a.m. "I will have to go." Baatar sighed while looking at the clock. He sat up on the edge of the bed and started to search for his underwear on the floor.
Kuvira looked at the clock and sighed... she didn't want to get up but her watch will start in an hour. She still lain on the bed and was looking at Baatar's muscular back.
Baatar was still sitting on the bed and could feel Kuvira is staring at him… Then he heard her moving on the mattress. Kuvira climbed closer to Baatar and hugged him from behind. Baatar could feel her warm skin on his back. She kissed his shoulder and whispered: "Don't go."
Baatar smiled and turned at her. "Maybe... we could have ten more minutes..." he said and kissed Kuvira passionately.
Baatar climbed to the middle of the bed and Kuvira straddled him. He wrapped his arms around Kuvira's back and their kisses became more and more intense. Baatar's body started to react immediately.
"Lay down." Kuvira whispered seductively and Baatar gave her mischievous smile. They both loved this position...

Kuvira had a quick shower and took on her light green bathrobe. When she returned to the bedroom Baatar was now fully clothed and was sitting on the edge of the bed. He was holding his glasses and tried to clean it by using fabric of his t-shirt.
Kuvira smiled at him and started to take on her guard uniform... Their winter uniforms were quite differed from the usual ones. It had more warm layers and shoes were different as well. When Kuvira put her belt on… she heard Baatar walking closer to her. "Can I braid your hair?" Baatar whispered and hugged Kuvira from behind.
She smiled and turned at him. "You can." Baatar liked to play with Kuvira's hair. It felt like a black silk in his hands and he actually became really good in braiding it. He took a hair slide from the night table and placed it on the end of Kuvira's braid. Then he gently kissed her on neck.
"Let's go." Baatar said and Kuvira nodded. She took on her armor and helmet and Baatar took his bag with tools which he needed in the morning.
They walked out of Kuvira's apartment and she locked it. They shared one more passionate kiss and went downstairs hand in hand.
Baatar knew that other residents are probably at home so he was glad that electricity sources broke and he didn't have to think of any excuse why he was there.
But when they reached mezzanine on the first floor they heard somebody walking upstairs. They agreed to don't hide their relationship anymore but they wanted to tell Baatar's family first so Kuvira quickly kissed Baatar and they let go their hands. Then Dao showed up on the stairs...
"Hello Kuvira." Dao said with a grin but it dissapered when he saw who was standing behind her. "Baatar Beifong? What are you doing here?" he asked suspiciously.
Kuvira put on her cold face expression. She knew Dao would be suspicious if she won't leave immediatelly. "Hello Dao. I don't have time to chat with you two. I need to go work." she said and continued in walking downstairs.
Baatar watched her leave and then looked back at Dao who was still confused. They used to be classmates years ago but didn't talk much together... Baatar was always into science and technology... and Dao always wanted to be in the center of attention... He was a bully as well... and they didn't get along well at all…
"Hello Dao." Baatar said in neutral voice tone and fixed position of his glasses which slipped down on his nose. "I was repairing electricity sources here." Baatar was now pointing at his bag with tools.
Dao nodded. "I see... I thought you were with Kuvira." he said and looked at Baatar with lifted eyebrow. Baatar was taller than Dao so it was kind of awkward.
"No. I was just in the engine room." Baatar responded and immediately regreted it because engine room is in basement but they were on the first floor now. But it looks like Dao didn't figure out. Baatar wanted to walk away as quickly as possible but Dao stopped him. "But you like her, don't you?" Dao asked strictly.
Baatar was silent. "I will give you a good advice..." Dao was now walking closer to Baatar. "She is cold as the stone and has no emotions. She thinks she's better than others... I tried to invite her on a date for months and she always rejected me..." Dao said. Baatar didn't like the way Dao was talking about Kuvira and he frowned at him.
"Just give up... why would she be interested in such a weak bookworm like you..." Dao added bumptiously with grin on his face.
"Don't talk about her like that. You don't know her." Baatar said angrily. He knew Kuvira more than Dao did and he had no right to say such things about her. "Maybe she likes bookworms more than arogant idiots like you. That's why she rejected you..." he added and walked away. Baatar knew Dao was bigheaded and he was well known for it but Dao insulting Kuvira like that made Baatar furious.
Dao was offended by Baatar's words. "I can say whatever I want and you will always be just a wretched nerd." Dao called but Baatar ignored him. There was no need to react to Dao's insults…Baatar knew empty words and threats when he saw ones.
Baatar left Guard's residence and headed straight to Beifongs's residence. While walking... the memory of Kuvira loudly moaning his name while their bodies were wildly moving together in a well known rythm filled his mind... He had big smile on his face. "Not so bad for a bookworm..." he thought for himself...
Beifongs's residence, hour later
Baatar had a quick lunch and was getting ready for a meeting with his father and other engineers. He was wearing his typical dark green trousers and lighter t-shirt with metal necklace. The meeting should be about the new railway from Zaofu to Republic City. However some problems with construction occured in Yu Dao Valley and they needed to consult it.
Baatar went to his father's office where the meeting should take place and knocked on the door. "Come in." his father said and Baatar walked in. His father's office was really spacious and there was a big emblem of the Metal Clan on the wall. His father was mainly architect so there were drawing boards and models of buildings everywhere. Baatar on the other hand was versatile. He was architect, engineer and chemist at the same time. He was also interested in medicine but prefered technologies more…
"Hi dad." Baatar said and closed the door behind him.
"Junior here you are. Investors will be there in a minute." Baatar Senior said and put plans from the drawing board on the big table in the center of office.
Baatar sat down to the table and yawned. His father looked at him and said: "You have dark circles under eyes. Did you sleep well today?"
Baatar was nervous. He had barely some sleep today because he was with Kuvira from early morning...
"I just had a nightmares. That's all... " Baatar said and hoped that his father won't be asking more questions. Baatar felt relief when he heard somebody knocking on the door.
All engineers and investors came in and sat around the big table. The meeting could start...Baatar was sitting next to his father and focused on every word the investors said. Baatar helped with designing the railway and he projected big part of it by himself so he was very interested in everything. After a while they finally got to the main topic.
"The problem with construction occured in Yu Dao Valley... I am afraid the bridge above the area won't be stable enough due to common landslides." said engineer Saito from Republic City.
"We should stabilize the base of the bridge by removing fragile rocks and move the base deeper to the mountain." said Master Rian who is leader of builders.
"No. Removing part of the rock would have serious impact on statics of the mountain. We can't do that." Baatar Senior said.
"Then what do you suggest?" Master Wong, Governor of Yu Dao, asked. He is one of the most important investors for this project but everyone was silent.
Baatar thought about his father's words for a while and then he realized something. "I've got an idea." Baatar said and everyone was now looking at him. "What if we change the plans and build suspension bridge instead... We should concenrate all weight of the bridge on the central pillars." Baatar said and quickly sketched his idea on the paper. "Pressure on the side of mountain won't be that strong and it won't cause more landslides."
Engineer Saito took a closer look on Baatar's sketch and said: "Actually... it's pretty good idea."
"Master Rian? How far are builders with construction? Can we change the plans or it is too late?" Governor Wong asked while writing notes to his documents.
"Technically... it should be possible. My team is currently working on the bases... but we can focus on pillars instead." Master Rian said. "But I need new plans as quickly as possible." he added and looked at others with strict face expression.
"I can do it." Baatar said with excitement. "I know Yu Dao Valley… just give me a few days and..." he wanted to continue but Governor Wong stopped him.
"Wait a minute young man... I apreciate your attitude but…I am not saying you wouldn't be capable of projecting such a big bridge but maybe... we should pick someone with more experience..." Governor said calmly and Baatar's smile dissappeared. He was speachless...
"B... But I know how to do that. I have experience." Baatar said with hope in his voice.
"I agree with governor Wong...maybe your father could project it and you could help him." engineer Saito said and looked at Baatar's father.
Baatar Senior was quiet for a while and then nodded. "It would be an honor." he said and gave comforting glance to his son.''I am sure that me and Junior will finish that new project in a few days." he stood up and all investors agreed.
Baatar was angry. They don't trust me... he thought for himself and held his rage inside. His father shaked hands with other investors and after a while they left. "I will contact you when the project is ready." Baatar Senior said when engineer Saito was leaving and closed the door behind him.
Baatar was still sitting on his place and his breathing was fast. "They don't trust me..." he said angrily and looked at his father.
"They are little conservative but they are investors as well. We have to listen to their requests. I am sorry Junior..." Baatar Senior said with sad expression. "I will start with projecting today. You can have some sleep and help me tomorrow." he added and went back to the drawing board.
Baatar stood up and left his father's office without a word. He was furious. Baatar went straight to his room and the only thing on his mind was that he will never be enough... everyone in Zaofu is unique except from him…he will always be just a Junior...
Opal headed to the gardens when she saw her oldest brother walking angrily towards her. "Are you alright Baatar?" she asked with concerns. He was always so calm...
"I am fine." he replied but Opal knew he was lying.
"Do you want to talk abou it?" Baatar heard Opal calling on him but he ignored her. He was angry and didn't want Opal to see him like that...
When Baatar got to his room he closed the door behind himself and went straight to the balcony. It was really cold outside but it didn't mind him. Baatar wanted to clear out his mind...
"I am good for ideas but not good enough to realize them." Baatar said angrily and kicked to the chair which flew across the balcony and fell on the floor. Baatar took off his glasses and wiped his eyes...his breathing was a little calmer now. He looked at beautiful mountains covered in snow and took a deep breath. Then he looked on the Southern Block. He hoped Kuvira had better day than him...
The Southern Block, Zaofu
Kuvira always liked the Southern Block. There were no high buildings like in the city center... but there were nice metal houses with big gardens and beautiful trees on the sides of the streets. It looked even nicer with all that glittering snow. Kuvira was walking on the empty street and watched beautiful sunset. She went closer to one bench and removed the snow so she could sit there.
After long watch her legs ached and she wanted to have short break. Kuvira sat on the bench and put off her gloves. She was now drawing ornaments to the snow with her fingers. Mountains, lake, flowers... she missed summer so much...
Her hands were now cold...it reminded her of Baatar...His hands were always cold but she loved it. It felt amazing on her warm skin. She smiled for herself when the memory of their morning filled her mind. Her cheeks were blushing in reaction...
Kuvira hoped that Baatar's meeting with other engineers and investors went well. She forgot to wish him good luck because Dao showed up and she had to leave.
She knew how important this project is for Baatar and that he spend long time working on it. It always amazed her how smart Baatar was. Kuvira always learnt something new when she was with him and he was like her second half. With him... she felt completed...
Kuvira closed her eyes and felt last rays of sunlight warming up her face. It was really cold today and she couldn't wait to have a warm shower when she returns home. Kuvira sat on the bench for a while and was lost in her thoughts.
"Attention guard!" someone called and Kuvira quickly stood up. She always took her job very seriously and this was the first time she had some rest during watch. Kuvira hoped it's not captain Rey. She quickly turned around and saw Lia in guard uniform with mischievous smile on her face.
"You scared me." Kuvira replied angrily but felt relief that it's not captain. Lia laughed and went closer to Kuvira.
"More guarding, less daydreaming Kuvira." Lia said and Kuvira rolled her eyes. Lia sat on the bench and asked: "How long have you been sitting here? Your watch ended twenty minutes ago."
"I don't know." Kuvira said and put her gloves on. Lia laughed and said: "Well it's my watch now. You can go."
Kuvira nodded and said goodbye to Lia. She was on her way back to Guard's residence when she heard Lia running and calling on her. "Kuvira! I forgot to tell you that captain wants to talk to you." Kuvira stopped and turned at her.
"Really? What does he want?" Kuvira asked curiously. Main meeting of guards should be tomorrow and there was nothing on the schedule today.
"I don't know. But Dao, Theo and Kai were invited as well." Lia replied and Kuvira was confused. She hoped that Dao didn't figure out what was Baatar really doing in the Guard's residence today and didn't tell anyone about their secret. The domes started to close and Kuvira realized she has to hurry to the meeting.
"It's too late. I should really go now." Kuvira said nervously and Lia laughed. "What's so funny?" Kuvira asked with lifted eyebrow.
"Maybe you should cover that hickey on your neck before you go there." Lia said while still laughing and Kuvira froze on the place. Her cheeks became red and she put her hands on her neck. Kuvira was glad that streets in the Southern block were pretty emty today and nobody saw the love bite on her neck.
"Oh no. Where it is exactly?" Kuvira was ashamed. It was difficult for her to show insecurity in front of other people. She always wanted to look profesional but this thing really disturbed her. However she was glad it was Lia and nobody else who noticed.
Lia was two years older than Kuvira and she was really feisty. She always spoke before thinking about her words but was really good metalbender and guard. She was a dancer as well. They should have a main part with Kuvira in the next dance premiere.
Kuvira was nervous and Lia thought it was really funny to see always perfect Kuvira being discombulated. Lia had a grin on her face and took little powder box with mirror from her pocket. She handed it to Kuvira. "Here. Take it." Lia said.
Kuvira took the powder box and thanked Lia. When she saw how big that love bite was her cheeks blushed even more. "Oh Baatar... " she thought for herself and carefully cover it with face powder.
"Sooo are you gonna tell me who's that lucky one?" Lia asked with mischievous smile and Kuvira gave her cold glance. They agreed with Baatar that they won't be hiding their relationship anymore but they wanted Baatar's family to be the first one to know.
"No. It is only mine business." Kuvira replied and gave Lia the powder box back.
"Oh c'mon I want to know who conquered your heart. Tell meee" Lia still tried to convince Kuvira but without succes. Kuvira quickly said goodbye to her and ran to the guards meeting. Lia smiled for herself and went back to the Southern block.
It was already dark and domes were closed completly. Kuvira ran as fast as she could but knew she will be late anyway. When she got to Guard's residence she stood in front of captain's office. She catched a breath and knocked on the door.
"Come in." captain said and Kuvira opened the door. Office of captain Rey was really spacious. Walls were dark green and there were black tiles on the floor. There was also big window and in front of it was captain's table with Metal clan symbol on the front side. On the other side of the room there was a bigger table with many chairs where meetings usually took place.
Kuvira walked in and bowed to captain and other participants. Her heart started to beat faster when she saw Suyin and Aiwei sitting next to captain Rey. Kuvira hoped that Dao didn't tell them about her and Baatar. Theo, Dao and Kai sat on the other side of the table.
"Good evening." Kuvira said and walked closer to the table.
"Sit down Kuvira. What took you so long?" captain asked and Kuvira knew she had to tell the truth because Aiwei will know wheter she lies or not.
"I am sorry. I didn't know there is going to be a meeting today." Kuvira replied and sat next to Theo. She wasn't lying but didn't tell everything at the same time. She hoped there won't be more questions. Kuvira took off her helmet an placed her braid on her shoulder so that love bite wouldn't be that visible.
"So we can finally start." captain said and Suyin nodded. He stood up and started talking. "I know you are little confused why we are here but let me explain...The reason why you are all here is that I am going to retire in March." Kuvira totally didn't expect this and all guards were shocked as well. Captain was in his early 60s but was really good metalbender and leader.
"Captain Rey decided to end his career after 20 years and he chose you all as new candidates for his position." Suyin said with smile on her face. Kuvira was amazed... she could became captain... it was always her dream. And now the fact that captain always guards Beifongs's residence seemed like a big advantage too because she could spend more time with her beloved Baatar.
"It's an honor to be a candidate but how exactly will you choose the next captain from four of us?" Dao asked curiosly with lifted eyebrow.
"All four of you are powerful benders with good leadership skills we all know that. However being captain is not only about strength but about character and strategy as well." Aiwei said in neutral tone of voice.
"There will be a test from mathematics, physics and strategy. Position of captain carries big responsibility and natural smartness." Suyin added and gave every guard special forms. "Fill these forms and bring them back to captain Rey tomorrow."
Kuvira took a closer look on the forms and still couldn't believe that out of all guards they picked her.
"That's all for today. You are dismissed." captain Rey said and all guards stood up. They bowed and left captain's office. Kuvira was still shocked. Dao started to talk about how amazing it will be when he becames a captain but Theo and Kai ignored him. Kuvira said goodbye to them and headed upstairs to her apartment.
"Who do you think the next captain will be?" Suyin asked when all four guards left the office. Captain thought about it for a while and then said: "I am not sure. Every candidate has some weakness... They are all elite benders I know that... but Dao can be really bigheaded, Theo will have his second child so I think he doesn't want to be a captain... at least for now. Kai is more technical than strategical type... and Kuvira... I am concerned that once she would became captain... all that power would go to her mind...she is very ambitious." captain was now taking all the documents from the table and Suyin nodded. She really wanted Kuvira to let her dream come true but she knew that captain was right. Kuvira could change in such a powerful position.
"One way or another... it will be really interesting." Aiwei said with neutral face expression.
Aiwei and Suyin said goodbye to captain Rey and left his office.
Kuvira was now in her flat and was sitting on the couch still in her armor. She was staring at the documents and couldn't believe there was a chance to became captain.
But there was one thing she was worried about. That test from mathematics, physics and strategy...Kuvira was a good student but she always had problems with these subjects. Kuvira wasn't sure if she would pass the test. She sighed and put the documents on the table.
She took off her armor and then the hair slide on her braid catched her eye... Baatar. "Baatar!" she was excited. Baatar could help her with it. He was genius in these subjects. He was the smartest person in Zaofu and with his help... her dream could come true.
Kuvira was really happy and couldn't wait to tell her beloved Baatar about these great news.
