Happy Fourth of July for those of you in the United States. Following my OCD-ness of having a story for most major and some minor holidays, here's a story to celebrate the independence of my nation. Whatever, your feelings about the US is, I feel blessed to be born here. Don't own squat.
"Rex, are you sure about this?" Noah eyed his friend wearily.
"Sure, what could go wrong?" Rex said as he adjusted his rocket.
"Oh, I can think of several million things!" Noah groaned.
"Dad, are we going to be okay?" Rafael asked worriedly.
"Of course, buddy. Nothing to worry about. I know what I'm doing." Rex glared at Noah who rolled his eyes.
"You know mommy said not to get arrested." Rafael reminded him.
"Yes, yes. No one's going to get arrested. We're miles away from anywhere, we have safety measures in place, and Uncle Noah's here.
"How am I going to stop you from being arrested?" Noah asked tiredly.
"We can run faster than you." Rex snickered.
"Oh ha, ha. So funny." Noah wrinkled his nose at him
"Now let's stop worrying. It's a great guys days out." Rex finally finished fiddling with the rocket. It stood erect on its stand. Rex rolled the fuse out to a safe distance. Noah stood with his arms crossed. Rafael sat on the hood of Uncle Noah's car watching his father.
"Okay ready?" Rex pulled out a lighter stick. Noah sighed and Rafael nodded enthusiastically.
Rex grinned as he flicked on the lighter or at least tried to flick on the lighter. He kept clicking it and clicking it. He changed position and tried again. It still didn't light.
"Do you have the switch on the right position?" Noah asked as he reached to take the lighter. Rex slapped his hand away.
" Yeah, it's switched to the on position." Rex snapped.
"Maybe it's out of fuel." Noah suggested rubbing his smarting hand.
"I just bought this hunk of junk. There's fuel in here." Rex shook the stick listening to the sloshing sound coming from the inside.
"Well, it's broken then. Do you have any matches?" Noah leaned against his car door.
"No, that's why I bought a lighter stick." Rex rubbed his hand through his hair frustrated. "Do you have any matches in your car?"
"No." Noah sighed.
"Dad, are we going to have to go home? Rafael asked worriedly.
"No, buddy. Daddy will think of something." Rex said confidently.
"This I'd like to see." Noah smirked.
"Shut up." Rex said as he rummaged through his bag. "A-ha!" He said triumphantly as he pulled out a magnifying glass.
"What? Going to look for your brain?" Noah snickered.
"Again… shut it." Rex snapped as he kneeled down. He aimed the magnifying glass until a thin beam of light hit the fuse.
"This'll take forever." Noah complained.
"You have a better idea?" Rex looked at his friend.
"Yeah, let's drive back into town, buy some matches, and then light this puppy up." Noah said.
"That's a two hour drive to town and another two back. This'll be faster." Rex argued.
"If it works at all! Didn't they debunk this on that show?" Noah asked agitated.
"I thought it worked." Rex said concentrating on the beam.
"It worked after they did some modifications, I think." Noah said trying to remember that episode. "Besides, you have to hold that still and you're moving it all over the place."
"I am not." Rex insisted.
"There! You moved."
"That's because you distracted me."
"You were moving before too."
"Wait, I have another idea." Rex dropped the magnifying glass and formed his bad axes.
"Rex, what are you doing?" Noah asked exasperated.
"I'm going to make sparks." Rex began hitting his axes together.
"Dad, maybe we should come back tomorrow." Rafael suggested.
"Nonsense. I got this." Rex continued striking his axes together. Sparks were coming out but they were not hitting the fuse.
Noah shook his head. "I'm going to sit in the car with the AC and radio on. Come on Rafael."
Rafael hopped off the hood of the car and followed Noah into the car.
"I got this. I know what I'm doing." Rex muttered under his breath as more sparks came out randomly.
Suddenly, a spark hit the end of the fuse. Rex excitedly rescinded his axes and got on his hands and knees. He began blowing on the fuse so that it would burn.
"Guys! It's lit!" He impatiently waved for them to come out. Noah and Rafael exited from the car.
"Finally." Noah mumbled.
"I told you I got this!" Rex said smugly.
"Uh, dad?" Rafael pulled on his dad's jacket.
"Not now buddy, gloating." Rex gently waved his son off.
"It took you long enough." Noah grumbled.
"But I got it done, Mr. Doubty McDoubter."
"Since when am I Irish? If you had bought matches we'd be done by now."
"Daaaad." Rafael said a little more urgently.
"Not now, Raffy!" Rex glared at Noah. "Well, if you'd carry matches in the car…"
"Why would I carry matches in the car? I don't smoke."
"Just to be prepared!"
"Dad!" Rafael yelled.
"What is it?" Rex finally looked at his son.
Rafael pointed. Rex and Noah's eyes turned to where the rocket was. Rex's eyes widened.
The rocket had tipped over. It was now aimed at Noah's car and it was too late to stop it.
"Look out!" Rex formed his smack hands and grabbed Noah and his son. Using his punk busters he leapt up and landed several feet away. He covered them with his body as they heard an explosion. They turned around. A flaming tire fell from the sky and landed near them.
"Cool!" Rafael clapped. "More!"
"My car… again!" Noah whimpered. "Claire's gonna kill me!" Then he glared at Rex.
"It worked." Rex said weakly.
Noah tackled his friend. They rolled around on the floor with Noah trying to strangle Rex. Rafael sat cross-legged on the floor to watch the burning car. He grinned. Another memorable Fourth of July.
This is what I imagine will happen whenever my husband decides to take my kids out to set off rockets and fireworks as he has threatened to do every year. Quote from the Simpsons "Celebrate the independence of your nation by blowing up a small part of it." Happy Fourth.
To the people who wants a fic on Six and Jasmine, I'm working on it.
