Foggy days occur when the warmer, moist air passes over the cooler surface air, when the vapors of water condense to form droplets that are bigger in size. It usually happens after a rainy night. Upon venturing or simply looking outside, one could see the slightly opaque clouds that touch the ground, and the dew that forms on the grass. Some nature-loving people appreciate it, while drivers absolutely hate it. Everyone has their own opinion.
It was such a day when The white-haired boy awoke. looking through his closet-turned-bedroom window, he saw the mist surrounding his abode. Although he wasn't pleased as such, but he didn't mind it. Sometimes a calm, tranquil morning is good and invigorating. He started with his morning routine, and couldn't help but snicker at the fact that Lori will NOT be in a good mood today. He also remembered that today he had to tell his parents about the fair and his willingness to participate. Upon opening his door, he was greeted by silence. Of course, even the Loud house is silent at early morning hours. He took a deep breath and began his routine.
After he was done with his early morning rituals, he came downstairs and started knocking on the door of his parents' bedroom. After he heard a "Come In!", he opened the door and saw his mother at the dresser, packing her things for work, while his father was getting ready for running the family restaurant. As soon as he came into view, both of his parents stopped what they were doing and looked at him with a smile on their faces.
"Morning Sweetie, up so soon?"
"Yeah Mom, I kinda wanted to talk to you and dad about something."
"Oh sure, here have a seat sport." His dad gestured to the armchair.
He got comfortable in the armchair, and then said,
"Mom, Dad, There's this competition I wanted to participate in."
Hearing this, their smiles became even wider. Whenever any of their children say they want to participate in an event or competition, their faces glow with happiness. After all, there is a certain pride that you feel when you say you are the parent of 11 children who are talented in many different fields.
"Oh, Well that's great son! I'm proud you want to participate in an extracurricular activity. You should have exposure in other things besides school, it's a vital part of education." he said.
"Your father is right. Exposure is a very important thing at your age. Besides, staying indoors and playing video games all day isn't all good for you."
Her remark would've stung him a bit, but he knew that his parents always chide him and his siblings so that they become better people when they grow up. Moreover there was truth in her words, and he knew that she was right.
"What competition are you looking forward to participate in Lincoln?"
"It's the county science fair. I heard it is being held on the 28th, and a lot of people are participating."
"Oh yeah, Your little sister Lisa was also talking about it yesterday. She said something about 'meeting one of the greatest scientists of the decade', so Lynn and I enrolled her in it. Do you want me to enroll for you too?"
"Yeah, I found out about it earlier, and it sounded pretty cool to participate in. Experience is valuable, so I'll gain something or the other out of it."
"Alright, I'll sign you up after I leave the dentist's office ok?"
"We wish you the best on your project Kiddo."
"Thanks Mom and Dad. I can't wait to get to work on it!"
Lynn Sr. and Rita got back to their own things, while Lincoln started to get ready for school. By the time their conversation was over, most of the Loud siblings had woken up, and were preoccupied with their own stuff and getting ready. Lincoln however, was in his own little world, thinking about the project. Breakfast went by quickly, with some cereal and milk, and soon enough everyone is sitting in Vanzilla.
Lori however, isn't in the best of moods, as expected.
"Ugh this stupid fog! How am I supposed to drive in this?"
"According to the driver's hand book, eldest sibling, it says that you should turn on the head lights at low beam, stay close to the curb, and watch the reflectors on the side of the road. Also, It recommends you drive a little slower."
"Lisa, that was literally a rhetorical question! I've passed my driving test and I know what to do!"
"I was only trying to aid you by offering the correct information..." Lisa murmured.
Lori started up the old van, and started to drive carefully. She made sure to drive at a moderate speed, Fast enough to reach all three schools before the start of the first period, but slow enough to be able to brake or halt in case a vehicle appears out of nowhere.
After a cautious ride, all of the siblings made it to school. Lori drove back to the house to finish up her daily target of her college project. After a semester at Fairway, she decided to head back to her family for a week or two to catch up on things. She would be gone in a week, and resolved to make the best of her time to finish up any work left to enjoy the rest of the time with her family. College makes you homesick, after all.
After a tedious school day, Lincoln arrived at his house, and headed straight for his bedroom to start with his project. After thinking of what to do first, he thought that introduction of a project is as important as the project itself. A good intro to a project is advantageous and may even be the reason why one project is ranked above the rest, even if they are similar in content. He took out his Laptop, notebook, pen, and pencil and began his research.
After an hour and a half, he had made a draft of the introduction and got a vague idea of where he was going with it. He shared the picture with Clyde so that he could proofread, advise corrections and suggest other details to include. After Clyde replied that he will get back to him soon, he shut the laptop.
"OK, in a project, just pasting stuff, going into jargon about solar energy and putting a solar panel on display won't accomplish anything. We need something that is out of the box, or a perspective of the scenario that hasn't been explored yet." He monologued in his mind. Pulling out some papers from his desk drawer, he went over a article.
"Earlier today I found an article on how to do advanced science projects. Most projects you see at standard science fairs are the repetitive "cool" projects like the baking soda volcano, or a electricity conducting potato. Really simple projects if you look at the principles behind them. But those that stand out are highly specified and narrowed down to, even if they are from a simple main topic. One of the winners of the Intel ISEF stated that one can go from understanding a baking soda-vinegar volcano to using femtosecond laser pulses to study the reactions at atomic levels...Whatever that means..."
He continued to read the article, which was actually a round-table conference between students that achieved success at various science fairs. Even if they were from different places, different backgrounds, pursuing different fields of science; They all agreed that one requires dedication, hard work, and ambition for their topic.
That statement reminded him of his sisters. It was due to the above attributes that they were able to achieve what they have achieved. Whether it be hours and hours of practice from Lynn, Lola and Luna, jokes good and bad from Luan, Leni's almost obsession with fashion, Lana's skills of pets and machinery, the list goes on. All the memorable people from history had an ambition of something. It creates the drive to live on. Otherwise what is the point of living?
Not wanting to go into philosophy, Lincoln decided to get back to the topic at hand. So far, there were three or so weeks until the science fair, not a lot of time to be honest. He needed to divide the project according to the various parts.
"Hmm... Well I guess we can divide the project into three main parts. I'll call them phase I, II and III.
Phase I can be the research phase. In this phase we will do all the research required for the project as well as what experiment we will do. We need to further organize the research into various constituents, but that can be done as we progress.
The second phase can be of the experiment we will do. Now to make things simple I've decided to do that phase at Clyde's house rather than the Loud house as...Well...I guess the name speaks for itself why that would be a bad idea... So that's for the second phase.
The third phase will probably be the easiest. We can make the display board, tweak information and basically iron out the kinks in the presentation and other minor things. Plus you never know if some things will take more time than others.
Apart from these phases I got to think of what to include in the project as well. A brochure about our topic, A presentation, display... I think I can do that tomorrow. Still have time until the fair."
He wrote the points on yet another scrap of paper. By now he had a bunch of papers that could go missing if left as they were, so he decided to keep them in a spare notebook for the moment. Later he could make a separate project notebook and stick them in there. Noticing the time, he thought of going for walk to the park.
After his tidying, he proceeded to exit his bedroom and walk down the stairs, thinking of the plan and any other things that need to be added, and accidentally bumped into Lynn. Holding her head with a hand, she adopted a miffed expression and said,
"Oww! You should watch where you're going Stinkcoln!"
"Oops. Sorry Lynn. I didn't see ya."
"Ugh...No probs. Anyway have you seen my baseball bat? I haven't been able to find it all day."
"Hmm...nope, last I saw it was yesterday when you were practicing. Did you check in your room?"
"Yes"
"In the yard?"
"Yeah"
"The Kitchen?"
"Yup"
"...Hmm...OK I'll help you find it. You search the yard, while I will search the house."
"Thanks Linc. I owe you one." She said as she ran out the back door.
After a thorough search through the house, which involved looking in the attic, the basement, the kitchen once again, underneath the porch and everywhere in each of the rooms, Lincoln finally found it next to the toilet.
"Hey Lynn I found it!"
Lynn dashed to the bathroom from wherever she was, and sure enough, Lincoln held the wooden bat in his hand. Lynn was surprised he found it in only ten minutes, while she took an hour and even then was unable to find it on her own.
"Wow Linc, you're one heck of a sleuth. I bet you could take it up as a hobby."
"Thanks, but why was it in the bathroom anyway?"
After thinking for a few seconds, she recalled the reason, and said,
"Ah now I remember. I had another one of my special meatball subs and before I knew it I was bombarding the toilet with it. It dropped harder than Lori's golf game recently..."
Lincoln wrinkled his nose in disgust. In the room next to the bathroom, a voice boomed loudly,
"I HEARD THAT LYNN!"
"Gross. Also I thought you hated golf as a sport and didn't care who played it?" Lincoln inquired.
"I still do. However from what I've seen recently of Lori's performance even people who never heard of golf would know that was the worst play ever."
Suddenly the bathroom door swung wide open, revealing the eldest sister, with a terrifying glare which was currently fixated on Lynn.
"Looks like I gotta go Linc. Bye!"
Lori swung both her arms in an attempt to catch her, the athlete ducked and made a mad dash towards the stairs.
"LYNN I SWEAR WILL LITERALLY TURN YOU INTO A HUMAN PRETZEL!"
"Thanks again for finding my bat!" She hollered while running down the staircase, with a mad Lori racing after her.
As he made a wiping motion with his hand, he said, "Whew. I am so relieved I am not in her shoes right now."
He was going to go downstairs, but was stopped by a hand with a purple guitar. A split second later, he saw the person whose hand was holding the guitar, though she looked different today. She wore a Black T shirt with a skull on the front that was painted in a ixture of purple and pink, with white spots, giving off a 'cosmic' sort of vibe. Underneath that she wore light blue jeans. The converses she was wearing had the same pattern as the skull. On her head she still wore the paperclip earrings and the pixie cut that was her style. Needless to say, her clothes were a new sight to him.
"Hey Luna! You look stunning!"
"Ah hey brah." She looked at herself and remembered.
"Yeah the band has a gig at the expo center for an event whose theme is 'space'. I get more inspiration when I dress with the theme, so I'm riding the galactic waves today!" She said with a grin.
"I've got the tune down, but I need some lyrics to match. After all what's a song without some sweet lyrics?"
"Instrumental." he quipped.
She smirked at the remark. "You know what I mean Lincoln."
"Yeah." He giggled. "I'm just messing with ya. Sure I'll help."
"Cool. After we're done, we'll sing it afterwards, 'kay?"
And with that, Lincoln went off to help yet another sibling. Time passed quickly for the lone Loud boy, as once he was done helping one sister, another came for something else, like those waves in the RPGs he played. The irresistible puppy eyes was the reason he couldn't refuse to help them. In fact, he didn't even realize suppertime had already come by the time he was done.
"KIDS! DINNER!"
Not even one nanosecond passed and the Loud sisters came down the stairs in a thunderous stampede. Lincoln was shocked that time flew by so quickly, but shrugged since he couldn't do anything about it. The Dining table was a cacophony of noise and voices, that came on top of other. If you focused on one, the rest would drone out. From what he was able to hear from the noise, Lola, Leni and Lori were talking about makeup, Lisa was talking to Luna about...something he could only guess was high school math, Lana was listening to Lucy reciting a poem about mud.
A poem of mud? Are you serious? he thought.
Lily was being...Lily, Luan was telling some jokes to Lynn, who wasn't very interested and was getting more irritated with each pun told.
"Hey Lynn, What do you call a team captain who slips during a game? A SLIPPER! Hahaha...Get it?
Lynn groaned in response.
"Luan stop being annoying..."
"What did the rooster order at the bar? A COCKTAIL! Hahahaha..."
"Luan can you please-" Lynn gripped her head with her hands.
"What did the Giraffe say to the-"
Lynn, tired of hearing the nonstop puns since she started her dinner, whipped her head at her sister, looked her in the eye, and then said in a volume that would prove she was a member of the Louds.
"LUAN SHUT YOUR BUCKTOOTH MOUTH UP!"
Upon hearing this, the table was shocked silent, with everyone's gazes on the sporty Loud sister, who face still had the same expression. Her mother looked at her with a glare.
"Lynn! We do NOT tolerate such language in our house!" Her mother scolded. "Apologize to her."
When she looked at Luan, her eyes looked like tears were going to erupt any moment. Suddenly, guilt formed a pit in her stomach, and started to churn.
"H-hey Luan, I -I'm sorry. I just got angry since you wouldn't stop your puns, and got even more mad when you didn't stop when I told you to."
Luan remained silent.
"I got angry and before I knew it, my mouth moved faster than my brain...and..."
Before she could say anything else, Lynn was enveloped in a hug by Luan.
"It's OK Lynn," Luan said, smiling. " It happens to us all the time. Don't sweat it. I agree I was being kind of annoying" She said, smiling sheepishly.
"Thanks sis." Lynn smiled as well before returning the hug.
"Say I had English Class today everyone, and our teacher asked me for a synonym for 'mouth'" Luan stated, now back to her normal, comedic self.
"Oh wow" said Lori. "They literally ask that in eight grade? So much for the 'future generation' that the superintendent was talking about last year... She thought to herself. "What did you say?"
"Lemme guess..." said Lincoln, "Trap?"
She shook her head.
"Bazoo?"
"No?"
"Orifice?"
"Nope."
"What else would you call a mouth?" Lynn asked, puzzled.
Luan started to grin, and proceeded to slam a pie into Lynn's face, which shocked the other Loud siblings.
"PIEHOLE!"
Luan doubled over, nearly falling off her chair. The other siblings couldn't help but laugh at the joke as well. Lynn wiped her face, which was covered in pie, and changed her expression from shocked to livid.
"Why you-"
"AHEM."
A resounding cough by the man of the house shut everyone's 'piehole' up.
"Now now...that's enough." Changing the topic, he asked, "How was everyone's day?"
Excitedly, everyone, one after another stared to talk about their day, until everyone finished their dinner
When Lincoln was done with his meal, he excused himself, picked up his plate and put it in the sink. He went to his room and thought about the plan of the project. Everything was in place, from the division of time to the process of research. But upon careful inspection he realized he forgot a vital detail that could turn the entire scheme on its sides.
His sisters.
He spent time with each of them after school, and before he even got a chance to do anything else, it was already dinnertime. This was pretty common for the middle child. There was no better feeling of happiness he felt when he saw the smile on his sisters' faces after he helped them with their things. After all, what else are siblings for? Wonderful as it was, if this were to happen every day, then his project would never get completed. He could tell them that he was doing a project for school, but knowing that his sisters were the very definition of 'nosy', they would probably interfere as they always did, and would end up ruining the whole ordeal altogether. So he needed to take them into account when doing his project. This was easier said than done, however. His sisters constantly barged into his room at will and would find out sooner or later if he left his room unsupervised. He knew Lisa still had cameras installed all over the house, and wouldn't be surprised if he found a couple in his room as well. If he acted even a wee bit suspicious, his sisters wouldn't leave until they pried the secret out of him.
Not only did he have to do his project in secret, he also had to make sure he wasn't paranoid about letting them find out. "This would be nothing short of an uphill climb." He paced is room for a while, trying to think of a solution to this aspect he forgot about earlier. As he sat down, a lightbulb went off in his head and the solution dawned upon him.
"Looks like 'Operation Science Project ' will need a tie up with 'Operation Don't let my sisters find out about the Science Project by distracting them and also think of a shorter name for this Operation '. " He chuckled.
Looks like things are getting interesting. Lincoln's cooking up a plan so his sisters don't find out about his project. He needs to appear busy enough so that his sisters don't disturb him too much, and at the same time he shouldn't be too paranoid about it. Talk about a tightrope walk!
Hey Everyone! Surprise! Yanwiz is Back in the house! I was writing this chapter before and was going to publish it soon, but I forgot about it and the story completely due to personal reasons. I recently remember about this and felt it's not right to leave a fic dead. I've recently got some spare time and may be able to update with less intervals in between.
Well, that's it for now. I'll be out with a new chapter soon enough...I hope. See y'all soon ;)
