Chapter 24

Matt, Terry, and Stevie were huddled around Matt's ipad. They were reading the safety requirements for all of the entries to the Demolition Derby.

Matt read the list off the screen. "Okay, so we must remove all of the glass from the car. There can't be any left in the car that could shatter on impact and hurt someone"

Stevie had a pocket sized notebook and was taking some notes as Matt read through it.

"We have to add a roll bar or a cage into the body of the car. It must be welded in," read Matt.

"How do you build a roll cage?" Stevie knew basic car mechanics, but this was looking to be past her expertise already.

"I reckon we get some of the steel piping, bend it into a basic triangle shape, with the point of the triangle about twenty centimeters above the head of the driver and with the other two points welded to the doors on either side." said Terry.

"Speaking of doors, we need to weld in a steel plate that runs the length of the driver's door. Any other doors and the boot must be welded shut. The bonnet can't be welded shut though," read Matt.

"Do we even have a steel plate large enough for this?" Terry asked.

"Okay. We need to remove the stock fuel tank and replace it with a metal tank with a capacity of no more than ten liters. It must be mounted to the rear of the driver," read Matt from the tablet. "Terry, I'm very glad you are here to help me with this stuff. I'm not a good enough mechanic to be doing this stuff." Matt said.

Stevie was having doubts she would be able to do this on her own as she had originally planned. Terry was already working on the Drovers car. She needed to find someone else who knew cars. She stepped out of the garage and made a phone call.

"Moira? Hey girl! Are you working on a demo car for anyone? You're not? Excellent! Will you be my partner for a Killarney car? I need to beat Drovers Run. When are you around? Yes, I will bring the beers. Thanks Moira!"

Stevie was instantly feeling better about her chances.

Her phone rang before she could go back to the garage.

"Ben, whats up?" she said into the phone.
