Jacob could remember the first time he heard the old story. The reason why pack members were forbidden to leave La Push.

Mana, the High Priestess, standing on First Beach, the wind in her perfect raven hair, the sun at her back.

"I know it hurts Jacob, but you "cannot" follow her." Mana was saying.

The Spirit Voice burned into his primal blood. It hurt to move, to speak. But he managed a low snarl.

"That woman is broken, unsuitable."

It was too much. Words forced their way out, combatting her liquid power over him like the flames of his passion for Kuri. "She's your SISTER Mana! You shameless shrew! How can you say that! How can you sit there and hurt your kin! Your family!"

A hand on his shoulder. Kind, gentle, and unoppressive. Sam.

"I know what it sounds like, Jacob. I know how you feel. My Reiko is—"

Another snarl. "YOU don't get to talk! You have yours! I want…" hot tears now, mortifying. "I want to be HER Jacob! I can't stand it! I'm going."

"JACOB"! Mana shouted. He stopped. He couldn't help it. She sounded pained, and nothing ruffled Mana. She was low, detached, ice-blooded. Jake hated her. But at that moment, her voice so resembled his beloved that he had to stop.

"Why." He shook.

"It's cold."

"What?!" Infuriating answer!

"Here in La Push, it never ventures above 85'."

"So." Enough of this.

"A-and the vampires. They're cold. All of it…keeps the wolves cold!" Desperate now. Begging for him to understand. Well too fucking bad, he didn't. None of this was a good enough reason not to go to Dallas.

"Mana. Enough." Sam said. "Our temperatures as wolves is 100' Jacob. It stays static and keeps us sane. But only in the prescence of Cold Ones. After that, the cold weather keeps us in check. However…if the temperature skyrockets…our blood boils. We devolve and can no longer control our anger, and the shifts. If you go to see her…"

Understanding dawned on Jacob at last. He breathed out a puff of frustration. "So what?! She needs me! I need her! It doesn't matter!"

Mana and Sam groaned in stereo. Mana stepped closer, grabbed him by the shirt, and got in his face. "Don't hurt her!" She spat the order at him, and let go, thrusting a bundle in his arms.

"The hell is this?"

"That is magic." Mana's typical self-satisfied sneer was back.

Sam glared at her. "It's to keep you nice and cool. We included instructions to make the potion for yourself. But you've got to Do It as soon as possible, Jake."

Jacob burst out laughing. It took a while to get serious again. "Your serious. I have to..to…to…"

"It's not funny! Kuri's natural cold temperature will keep you safe for a while after you run out of potion. But you have to kiss her as soon as possible, and then Seal. The. Deal!"

"Yeah. No pressure."

Jacob sighed, phasing, as he left the cool air of La Push for the warmer climate of the South.
