The following Monday, Gerry walked into the office to find everyone but the person he needed to talk to.
"Where's Sandra?"
Steve looked up from the kettle, "Meeting with Strickland, coffee?"
Gerry nodded and sat down at his desk. He hadn't heard from Sandra since that eventful night. Every second of every day since, he had been plagued with thoughts about what he had discovered. He couldn't shake the mental images of those harsh lines in hues of pinks, reds and purples. How could he have missed that? How could any of them miss that? He knew the signs to look out for, they all did; herself included. How long had this been going on? She was smart, he'd give her that. She'd managed to hide a huge part of her from the 3 people she's closest to.
He broke from his trance by a voice saying, "Earth to Gerry,"
Sandra stood in front of Steve's desk with some papers in her hand. Strickland stood next to her, waiting for Gerry's attention.
"Sorry Sir, carry on," Sandra said, giving a slight glare to Gerry.
"As I was saying, Simon Page, died aged 32. Found strangled in his car 7 years ago, by a Kelly Baker; his colleague. Simon wasn't loved by everyone, that was made clear. However, all suspects had watertight alibis."
He stopped to read the faces of the team before continuing once more, "Case remained unsolved until last week. A woman named Sarah Matthews brought us this," He handed the team a copy of a handwritten letter.
"Her son, Chris, died almost 2 weeks ago. He left this behind,"
"Cause of death?" Steve asked.
"Suicide."
Gerry looked at his guvnor the minute the word escaped her boss's lips. No one but him noticed the slight change in her facial expressions. The split second look of hurt flashed across her features. It shocked him that he'd even recognised it when none of the others wouldn't have even noticed the change in her line of sight.
"He was 17 when he died. The note has given us a fresh lead. Simon Page was a primary school teacher; we know that already. Although, he was Chris's teacher."
He took a breath to examine how the team was taking the information before continuing.
"Chris wrote about how he was abused by Simon when he was at school. He was just 10 years old. I want you to find out who killed Simon Page. I'll be back to check on your progress next week."
Strickland handed the case file to Sandra and left the office. Sandra looked at her team, deciding who would go with her to see Sarah Matthews.
"Right, Steve, could you write the file up on the boards? And Brian, get me a list of all the schools Simon taught at. Gerry, you're with me."
She sighed and entered her office to collect her car keys and bag before turning on her heels and heading towards the car park. Gerry was close on her heels - he was the person he least expected her to choose to take with her. He wasn't too sure whether to approach the elephant in the room or whether to ignore the whole incident. He jumped into the passenger seat as she started the engine and began the route to Sarah's house.
He watched her movements, wondering whether it would be a good time to bring it up or not. She casually rolled both front windows down halfway, letting the spring breeze flow through the car. She began to turn the air conditioning on, still feeling too hot.
"Sandra,"
He looked at her, waiting for her to send a quick look his way. She turned to look at him for a second before turning her attention back to the road.
"It's okay to take your jacket off. I've seen it. I know you're hot."
She sighed before shaking her head as she came to a stop at a red light.
"Gerry, what you saw was a mistake. I'm not hot."
"You have the air conditioning on and both windows open and it's only 16 degrees outside."
She pulled away from the crossing and rolled her eyes at him. She wanted to pretend the incident had never happened. He didn't deserve to see anything that he had seen. She was still mad at herself for letting him see her in that state. Yes, she was hot but she didn't want to admit that to Gerry. If she exposed her secrets to the world, she would have to admit that Gerry really had seen the worst side of her.
She shook her head at him before saying, "I'm not ready Gerry. Anyway, we're here. Come on,"
She turned the engine of the car off before walking up the pebbled pathway. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door. She turned around and pressed the lock button to her car, after having waited for Gerry to join her on the doorstep. The door slowly opened to reveal a middle aged brunette she assumed was Sarah.
"Sarah Matthews? I'm Detective Superintendent Pullman and this is my colleague Gerry Standing. We're from the unsolved crimes and open case squad. May we come in?"
The woman slowly nodded and let the two detectives inside the house. She knew exactly what they were there to discuss and she was hoping she was strong enough to go through with it.
