Chapter 85
Russell had, of course, been right. Kate was miserable. She tried staying in the house with Meg and Katie but, randomly, the smell of raw eggs started setting her off again. They were baking lamingtons so it was impossible to avoid the eggs.
Kate finally just went back to bed. She napped for an hour or so and woke up hungry. This was a normal occurrence now. Puke, sleep, eat, puke, sleep, eat, had unfortunately, become Kate's regular schedule. She went back into the house and she could smell the cake as it had just come out of the oven. It did not set her off. Rather, her stomach growled and let her know the twins wanted some.
"Hey. How are you feeling? Did the nap help?" asked Meg as Kate walked in.
"Kate! Look at our cake we made, Nana and me," said Katie.
"It looks and smells fantastic. I could eat the whole thing right now," Kate said. "I'm always either starving or getting sick. I'm really excited to become a mother, but I am already totally over pregnancy. I've only even known I was pregnant for like a week. I'm only at ten weeks. How am I going to make it to forty?" worried Kate.
Meg gave Kate an encouraging hug. "I was pretty sick with Jodi the first trimester, but then the morning sickness went away and I was just hungry all the time. I ate everything. I made poor Kevin drive all the way to Fisher because I just had to have a burger from Macker's. No other burger would do. And that wasn't just once. It was at least five times. The morning sickness should go away in the next couple weeks. It does for most women anyway. And just think about how wonderful it will be to have two beautiful babies," said Meg.
"I know it will be worth it in the end, but I wish I could have something to eat without losing it a few minutes later. Toast and biscuits aren't working. I can't keep them down anyway. I'm starting to think I should just eat whatever tastes good. I'm going to be sick anyway. I might as well enjoy what I eat," said Kate.
"I suppose that's not a bad outlook to have. Do you want a lamington?" Meg offered her a plate of lamington that had just been dipped in coconut. "I'd normally let these chill for a bit, but who cares. Eat!" Meg encouraged.
"Hell yes!" Kate grabbed the cake and took a big bite. "Mmm. This is delicious." Kate's eyes grew big and she smiled while she was still chewing. "I think I could eat another twenty-five of these," admitted Kate.
"Well, I can't give you that many. We have a bunch of hungry people expected back here in a few hours. But I think we can give you a few more since you are eating for three." Meg winked at Kate and put another Lamington on her plate.
"Katie. You did a fantastic job. These are the greatest Lamingtons I have ever eaten. Maybe that's what my problem has been. I need to eat more junk food. I'm going to try that approach and see if it helps," announced Kate.
"Thanks Kate, I love baking with Nana. We make the best stuff."
"You're pregnant. You're allowed to eat whatever you want." Meg placed a third Lamington on Kate's plate as she finished off the second one.
"Well, the truth will be known in the next ten minutes. If these stay down, I'm sticking with junk food only."
Ten minutes passed.
"Okay. So far so good," said Kate. She felt as good as she had felt in a while. "I guess three Lamingtons were all I needed. I'm going to stick with eating only junk food and hope for the best."
