Chris slowly woke up on the bed. Her head was pounding, and everything was a little foggy. As she tried to sit up, she felt a throbbing in her foot. She forced her eyes to blink as she looked down her leg, but the sunlight through the slotted blinds was bright and hurt her head. As the room, slowly came into focus, she suddenly realised where she was and remembered what had happened.
She looked about. Her foot was bandaged, and her head felt like she had been hit with a baseball bat, but other than that she thankfully felt okay. Though she did feel embarrassed that she had caused an accident by being so distracted.
Then the panic hit her.
'Did I hurt anyone?' 'Oh god what will the commander say?' She was stepping through these questions in her head when the doctor opened the door.
"Officer Alonso, I'm glad to see you are awake." He smiled kindly, "How are you feeling?"
"Um, like crap." She said touching her head.
"Well you do have a concussion and nasty gash there, so you need to take it easy." He said pointing to her foot.
"Did I um … was anyone else hurt?" She asked, holding her breathe for his answer.
The doctor frowned a little and looked up from his clipboard. "No other patients were brought into this hospital. You collided with a freight truck, so your vehicle probably came out the worst." He grimaced a bit watching her.

Chris raised nodded before raising her eyebrow. "Yeah..." she sighed.
"Do you remember the accident at all?" He asked as he moved closer.
"Um, yeah, I guess I just didn't see the light change. Just a stupid mistake on my part." The doctor nodded and pointed to her leg. "How does your ankle feel?"
"Sore, aching. What have I done? Is it broken?"
"No, not broken but it is pretty swollen and will be tender and sore for a week or two." He paused looking up at her, "You are very very lucky Officer Alonso."
"Hmm, yeah I guess so." She whispered.
"Your Commander is here. So, I'll go update him and be back shortly." He said as he headed for the door.
'Oh great! Chris thought... 'Hicks will kill me for this. I know better, this should never have happened.' She sat on the bed staring at her phone. Reaching for it, she began to find her uncle's number. As she was hitting dial, she saw the message come through. Street's name on her screen, she stopped the call and opened it.
"Hey, I really hope you are okay. I know you probably don't wanna see me right now. But I just wanted to say that regardless of how angry you are with me, and how stupid and selfish I was, I am here and am worrying about you."
She sucked in her lip and clenched her jaw reading it. "Great, now he is gunna play the victim card and thinks I hate him again." She muttered. "Probably fair considering..." she added tilting her head.

After a few deep breathes she typed back, " I'm okay. Going home tonight, and off for a few days is all. Thanks"
Was that too harsh? Too cold? Too little? She shrugged and hit send.
"Alonso," Hicks's voice made her look up. "I am so glad to see you are okay." He added walking to the end of her bed with a concerned look.

They exchanged small talk about the accident and her injuries and what this meant for a week or so while she healed and got medical clearance again. Once he left, she dialled her uncle and arranged someone to come and get her.
As she sat waiting, swing her legs and scrolling through her phone she heard some familiar voices.
"Hey, hey! It's Wreck It Chris!" Teased Hondo, as the whole team approached.
She couldn't help but smile and shake her head. "Hey guys, look I am so sorry about all of this." She started, telling herself not to make eye contact with Street.
"Relax Chris. It happens. We are more worried about you." Deac said eyeing her bandaged foot.
"Oh, I'm okay, just a bit bruised."
"You were so lucky," Street answered watching her.
"Yeah," her answer was almost a whisper. It was so hard to ignore the shit between them right now. She was doing her best to put up a wall and disguise it. Deac however, was watching her closely. He knew she just wasn't herself. That something was on her mind, distracting her and bringing her down.
So as the team went to leave shortly after, Deac hung back.
"Mind if I ask a question or too and try and help?"
"Oh, look, Tomas will be here any second, so, you can go, I will be fine to wait."
Deacon smiled. "Well, you'll be waiting a while." She looked back at him and frowned confused. He saw her confused and explained. "Tomas isn't coming. I am your ride." Chris's eyes went wide as she stared at him. "What? Why? You should be going home to Annie and the kids."
"I can see something is up with you and you need to get it out and talk about it, and I just wanna help."
"Help? Help with what?" Chris answered, becoming annoyed.
"Whatever has you so distracted and wound up that you ended up running a light and here right now."
