As shift ended, Chris was no closer to knowing what to do. She changed into her gym clothes and headed to the ring. Deacon had offered to train with her as he had seen she needed to get rid of some frustration.
As Street walked out past the ring, he paused and watched her briefly. He knew that Deacon was trying to help her, but the fact that he was now the one Chris was talking to, made him sad. He hated that their dynamic had shifted. But he understood why. As he walked away, he knew that the distance she was putting between them was because she wanted him to make things work with Molly.
Chris hadn't noticed Street going past. She was so wound up with what to do, that she was taking in out on Deacon's hand pads.
"Hey, hey," Deac said holding up the pads. "You're not trying to hurt me here remember."
"Sorry!" Chris sighed and dropped her hands. She yanked off her gloves and walked to get a drink.
"So, are you gunna take it?" He asked gently as they stood sipping their water.
"I know I should and I will be stupid not to but,"
"But what? You're worried about Tan and Street being mad at you?" Chris threw Deacon a glare but couldn't manage an answer. She simply frowned and nodded slightly.
"Chris, let me ask you this." Deac said looking at her, "if Lynch had offered this to either of them, would they be so thoughtful of your feelings and consider declining?"
Chris blinked and looked down. She knew that her teammates weren't as callous as Deac's words implied, but she understood his point. She knew the message behind what he was saying was right. So, the next shift she came in early to tell Lynch that she would go.
As the weeks flew by, she struggled to find a way to tell them about where she was going. She knew they would be pissed off that they didn't get chosen, but she hoped that they would at least be happy for her.
Hondo started the team shift briefing and soon he looked at Chris.
"Something exciting for the coming shift block, Chris here," he said, moving to pat her shoulders, "has been chosen to attend the Quantico Training, representing LAPD SWAT. She is leaving tonight after shift and Rogers will replace her on 20 David for the week."
"What?" Tan and Street both mumbled shocked, Deacon shot them a glare and they both smiled, "Wow, way to go Chris!"
She saw them smiling at her but knew they may have other feelings about this.
She stayed busy throughout the shift so that they wouldn't find a chance to talk to her about it.
When shift finally finished, she grabbed her bag from the locker room and headed down to get her suitcase from her truck. Deacon was planning on taking her to the airport, so she was surprised to see Street leaning on her truck.
"Hey," She said with a querying look approaching him.
"Hey, look I know you and I are kind of in a weird place and Deacon is your sounding board now, but I just wanted to say goodbye before you left and good luck." She watched him smiling and knew he was being genuine, "Chris I am really proud of you."
Chris had been shocked by Street's goodbye in the garage, but it made her smile as she looked out her hotel window in Virginia. At least he still must value their friendship she thought. He made the time after all to make sure he said goodbye, good luck and I am proud of you. That meant a lot.
She lay back on the mountain of pillows on the perfectly made bed and stared up at the ceiling trying to work out what was next in her life. Finish this training. Go back to LA. See what happens with the TLI's and then what...? she had no idea?
She had already found an apartment, taken this chance at work, what else was she needing to change in her life in order to find her happiness again?
Chris thought about the things that made her happy. About her friends, her family, having fun doing the things she loves like hiking, swimming, running, seeing movies and getting dinner with those close to her. She couldn't lie though. Part of her missed having someone special, someone to love, to hold her, to go home to... her thoughts drifted to Ty and Kira, and she wondered how they were doing now.
She knew she would never ever go back to them, but right now she missed them, or was she just missing having someone. Was that why Street was also on her mind? She felt bad even thinking that. Like it was somehow unfair on him and on Molly? She knew she need to let that go, but why was letting him go so damn hard. She rolled over and thumped the pillow next her frustrated.
'Good God Chris,' she whispered to herself, 'pull yourself together,'
