Chris closed her trunk, walking with Tan towards the others. She spotted Street in the distance. He was walking towards them with Deacon. She saw Deacon pat his back and nod at him and she hoped like hell he had not said a word to Deacon about anything.
"Chris, Street," Hondo's' voice bought her out of her thoughts. "Can you help Luca grab the gear out of Black Betty?"
She swallowed and nodded, turning on her heels and walking towards Black Betty. She felt Street jog to her side.
"Hi."
"Hey" she said without looking at him. He didn't have time to say more as Luca approached carrying a large box.
"There's two more in the back." He nodded at them both.
"Sure," Street said. Grabbing one and turning back to her.
"You okay?" He asked.
"Uh huh," She quickly answered not lifting her eyes.
"Chris, please" he said quieter as he still held out the box for her to take. "Don't push me aw…."
"I'm not" she snapped back. "Here isn't the place." She said firmly. Nearly tripping over Luca as she spun around with the box almost yanking it out of Streets hands and walking off with purpose.
Luca watched her and then moved his eyes back to Street, who was standing there watching her too with pursed lips and a frown.
"Jeez, what did you do this time?" Luca chuckled tapping his arm. "She is pissed."
Street dropped his gaze and cleared his throat. "Probably everything." He tried to laugh as he took his box and waited for Luca to lock Black Betty.
Assembling back at the command trailer, Hicks began to explain the situation.
"Our suspect is firing shots in the air." Hicks signalled over the noise of the helicopter above. "He is here," he pointed to the map, "in the courtyard at the centre of this complex."
He went on to explain the suspect was a mental patient, who had fled the facility he was in. He was looking for his sister and firing randomly at anything and everyone. 3 people already wounded at 2 other scenes, before uniforms tracked him here.
Soon Hondo had took the team to find a way in,
"Tan and Street 2 side, Deacon and Chris 3 side, Luca with me."
Chris nodded at Deacon who eyed her a little before nodding back. She wondered if she was just reading too much in things. She felt Street's gaze on her as she watched Hondo. She was debating whether to look at him. Finally, she returned his glance as they turned to move. His eyes looked worried or maybe sad. He gave her a nod and almost sad half smile as he jogged to Tan's side.
Putting her mind into mission mode, Chris slid behind Deacon and clenched her rifle. Giving him a nod to tell him she was ready.
"30 David to all D team. 24 David and I are in position." Deacon radioed, as they waited for Hondo's count.
"On 3, watch your six." Hondo radioed back.
They swept through the halls of the apartment complex.
"Stay inside, lock your doors." Deacon whispered to a few residents who opened their doors to find out what was happening. Chris kept her head on a swivel being very aware of her surroundings as her training kicked in.
Soon they had reached the entrance to the courtyard.
"24 David to all D teams. We are in position." She radioed. Soon followed by Street's voice and Hondo confirming they were ready to move. Chris swung open the door as Deacon stepped through, clearing the immediate area of danger as she returned to be behind him and patted his shoulder twice. With just hand movements he gestured for them to find cover behind the retaining wall. They were positioned directly behind the suspect. Tan and Street were approaching from the left and Hondo and Luca from the right.
"Sir?" They watched Hondo approach the man. Who was sitting on a bench, rocking back and forth with a gun on the ground in front of him? He was mumbling and scratching his head and didn't seem to respond or be aware they were there. Hondo motioned for Tan and Street to hold position. They fanned out and kept their weapons trained on the suspect.
"Sir? LAPD Metro SWAT." Hondo called louder. The man instantly looked up. His eyes wide as he went to lunge forward for the gun.
"STOP, I will shoot." Hondo warned. As the team trained their aim on him. The man froze and stared at them. Looking nervously between all of them. He turned to see Chris and Deacon behind him, the others each side. As he stepped in circles looking around, he kicked the gun a bit further away from the bench. He froze again and looked down at it.
"Don't!" Hondo said stepping closer and aiming his rifle at him. They all knew he had nowhere to go, but he was unpredictable. Everyone had zero idea what he would do next.
"Why don't you talk to me, what's your name?" Hondo asked. The man stepped back and curled himself up on the seat, again scratching at his head and shouting
"NO, NO, NO, NO GO AWAY."
"I can't do that. I'm here to help." Hondo replied edging closer. Street swallowed hard and watched Hondo's feet closely. How close would he be able to get? He wondered.
As the suspect was distracted, again rocking and mumbling loudly. Deacon and Chris stealthily moved in closer. Hondo motioned for the others to cover him as he stepped closer trying to get himself between the suspect and the weapon of the ground.
As Hondo stepped over the gun carefully, Deacon and Chris came in from behind on both sides and in one swift movement the suspect was face down in cuffs before Street, Tan or Luca could reach them.
"20 David, Code 4, suspect in custody." He radioed as he took a few deep breaths and smiled to his team. They were all relieved, but still on an adrenaline high as they began to walk back out of the building. Street and Tan took the suspect. Chris held back slightly and walked out with Luca.
"You okay?" Luca asked her as they weaved their way through the halls of the building.
"Yep," she answered quickly, a little to quickly.
"The ah, way you snapped before, at Street?" He said nodding his head in Street's direction. She looked up to see them in front of her. Suddenly realising Luca might have heard all of their exchange too.
"Just, sorry, in a mood today I guess." She said. Luca eyed her.
"Okay, I get you. Just don't kill the kid with those icy stares," he teased as he paused to ask Deacon something.
Chris was glad for the few seconds of solitude. She didn't know what to say and swallowed hard watching Street in front of her. She realised she was probably being a bit bitchy again. But she was also annoyed that he even tried to broach the subject at work.
As she watched him walking ahead of her, she saw Tan let go of the suspect to answer his phone. Street continued to walk him to the waiting squad car, when suddenly the suspect dug his feet in, spun on his heels and head-butted Street in the nose, screaming,
"NO! You are one too! I'm not…." As he tried to make a run for it. He didn't get 2 steps before Street had him back, face down on the ground.
"Stop resisting!" Street shouted as other officers quickly gathered to help.
"Oh Shit." Chris grimaced as she and Tan ran to help. Street's nose was bleeding badly as she and Tan drag the man up and handed him to the waiting uniforms.
"Get him outta here." Tan said firmly.
"Yes Sir." Answered the officer.
"Shit, Street. I'm sorry I." Tan said stepping closer to take a look.
"It's okay," Street managed wiping the blood out of his mouth. "It happens."
"You better get that checked, could be broken." Chris said with a concerned frown as she pointed to the EMT's.
Hondo, Deacon and Luca had reached them, and Hondo made him go get checked over.
Soon, 20 David, minus an injured Street, stood in front of Hicks. Team debrief time. Tan was shuffling nervously, thinking he was going to get in trouble for answering that call and Street winding up hurt. Chris stood next to him and felt the anxiousness.
"Not your fault." She whispered glancing sideways.
"Uh huh, tell them that." He mumbled nodding at Hondo and Hicks who were talking softly.
"Okay, well almost perfect. Well done! The suspect is being transported to a secure mental facility for treatment and will be booked once that has occurred. Hopefully, Street is back on deck soon," He shot a glance at Tan, that Tan read loud and clear. "See you all back at HQ, they're all yours," he patted Hondo's shoulder and headed off.
Hondo nodded and stepped in front of them. "Okay, like he said almost perfect." He too glanced at Tan and Tan nodded silently back, acknowledging his fault. "The actual op was strong; teamwork was smooth and efficient. We will work on protocol and the timing of important interruptions."
"Yeah, sorry guys, I never meant for.." Tan offered.
"It's all good, could have been any of us." Deacon interrupted. "Go check on him and we will see you at HQ." Deacon threw Tan the charger keys and headed to Black Betty with the rest of the team.
As Chris rode back, she couldn't help but feel bad. She knew she had been a bit pissy with him. That he was now injured and would have been feeling like crap. She made a promise with herself to apologise to him when she had a chance. But as for what else she needed to say. She had no idea. She was worried he would want some kind of answer on things and honestly, she still had no idea of how to work that all out. She was lost in her thought for the remainder of the ride back.
Tan approach the ambulance to find Street sitting up on a stretcher. "Oh man I am so sorry." He said seeing the swelling and blueish bruising that was appearing.
"Tan," Street chuckled. "It's all good. Stop apologising."
"We are heading into UCLA, he will need a scan to see what damage is under that swelling." The EMT explained looking at Tan.
"Okay I'll meet you there." Tan answered. Then he looked at Street, "You okay?"
"I'm fine, I'll see you there." He motioned.
Street didn't wait long for a scan to determine that his nose was fractured, but no major damage that required intervention. Just rest and ice. Once the doctor walked him back to Tan, Tans grimace told Street it looked bad.
"Think this will help with the ladies." He joked motioning to his messed-up face.
"Um," Tan winced, "maybe as a story …in a few months" he laughed back.
At HQ, as Hondo lead Luca, Chris and Deacon in they were approached by Lt. Lynch. "I need to speak with Officer Alonso."
"Regarding?" Hondo asked with a concerned frown., glancing to Chris who frowned to.
"Just need some help with a case the ADA is prosecuting."
"Okay." Hondo nodded for Chris to go with her.
"Can I ask what case and why me?" Chris asked matching Lynch's stride.
"We need to clarify some facts with the market siege. I have a conference call waiting with the ADA." She answered as her gaze fell on a suddenly self-conscience Alonso.
