As Chris followed Lynch to her office and sat down, she was soon listening to her explain that the ADA needed facts for the case against the shooter. The rush of information made her head swirl, confused.
"But why me? I was only in the markets for a few minutes tops, before I found Lilly and ..."
"Yes, Lilly." She cut Chris off. "We need more information in regards to her and the gentlemen that helped her." Chris was still listening but suddenly her thoughts were filled with Jared. She remembered that day and how shocked she was to see him there; then how uneasy she was about him appearing like that in front of the team.
"Oh, okay." Chris nodded, feeling a bit uneasy.
"We need to work out a few holes, and how all of this pieces together." Lynch explained.
Soon the ADA was online and asking Chris a barrage of questions about the mission. She asked Chris to step her through the mission via a walk through, so she could hear what had exactly happened. In particular, she was interested in where and how she found Lilly and what Lilly had told her. As Chris began explaining that Lilly told her a man had helped her look for her mummy, and when the shooting started had hidden her behind that dumpster, the ADA stopped her.
"This man," she paused looking at her notes, "our records only have a name. Jared Michaels. No witness statement. Did anyone take further witness details or?"
"Oh, I, um am not sure why uniforms didn't, but he is known to me ma'am." Chris interjected, "I can give you his details if you need to contact him."
"Oh," She answered surprised. "Okay, that would be helpful."
Chris wondered whether she needed to explain they were dating or whether what she had said would be sufficient. She was worried that it would return and bite her in the ass. So, she spoke up.
"He is, well we are dating, were dating before this." She said.
"Okay, I see."
Soon they had wrapped up the conference call and the ADA had said they would continue to speak as needed as this case progressed. She knew Jared was going to need to be contacted and she wanted to get out of there and text him.
"Keep me updated Alonso, this case isn't as straight forward as we first thought."
"Understood." Chris answered. She knew she didn't know all the details about the case. And couldn't really discuss it with Jared, but she wanted to tell him they would be calling him.
As she pulled Lynch's door closed and walked a few steps she pulled out her phone and text him.
"Hi, I just had an interesting meeting regarding the market shooting. The ADA will call you soon to get a statement about it and what happened." She hit send, slid her phone in her pocket and returned to the locker room to find 20David.
As Chris reached the downstairs hallway she was met by her team,
"Good, your done up there, let's go, we have a case." Hondo said walking quickly.
"Right." Chris said still a little confused. Luca handed her a tablet with the case information. "I'll go grab my gear. Are we headed out 2 down?" She asked not seeing Tan or Street yet.
"Tan will meet us there and Rogers is joining us." Deacon explained.
"Go grab your gear, I'll get Black Betty running," Luca smiled.
"Thanks." She nodded and peeled away from the group. She had noticed Street wasn't back yet and figured the hospital scan queue can be long and slow at the best of times. So, she grabbed her gear and jogged back through HQ to the motor pool.
"Come on, come on," Luca hollered from the driver seat.
"Okay, okay, Jeez, I'm here, in record time." She snapped back doing up her vest and sliding in next to Rogers, who smirked at her. Luca grinned. It was easy to get a rise out of her today. But that also made Deacon frown a little. He knew something was up and Street had been off too.
As they headed out, Hondo began going over the case. A home invasion in an up market suburb. Uniforms were on scene. Suspects barricaded inside. Once the case information was wrapped up, Chris asked,
"Any word on Street's nose?"
"Just swollen and bruised." Hondo answered. "A few days' rest, but he'll live." Hondo smiled, showing Chris a picture Tan had sent of his purple and blue face.
"Ouch!" She grimaced seeing the swelling and bruising.
"That's gotta hurt." Erika nodded with a small chuckle. Chris smiled having her beside her. It wasn't too often they got to work so close. Chris felt her phone buzz in her pocket and immediately her thoughts were on Jared. Was it him replying to her message? She slid it out and peeked at the notification. It was him, but the message was long and she didn't want to open it there. She scrunched her lips and pushed her phone away. Erika flicked her leg,
"All okay?" She whispered whilst Deac was talking to Hondo.
"Uh huh."
"Jared?" Erika grinned nodding at the phone. Chris widened her eyes at her. "Shhhh," she whispered. Erika smiled a big smile. She could see how much Chris was into Jared. It was nice seeing her friend happy.
Soon they were on scene and Tan arrived jogging up to them doing up his helmet.
"Sorry boss, traffic from Luca's place to here was awful."
Hondo nodded at him, "It's okay, You're with Chris on the 3 side."
As Tan and Chris went to grab the gear they needed, Tan sensed Chris was a little wound up.
"You worried about Street?" He asked.
"No, why?" She bit back quickly and defensively.
"Oh, my mistake you just seem tense."
"No, it's um, not Street related." She answered. "Hey, can I ask you something about that market siege we went to?"
"Yeah? Shoot?"
"Why didn't anyone get a statement from Jared, the guy who helped Lilly?"
"Oh, the kid, I dunno, I was busy tying up other loose ends. Hey, isn't this the guy that you were cosy with? Is he a new love interest?" Tan teased. She shook her head.
"I had a call from the ADA asking about it is all, and it just made me wonder." She muttered. Tan eyed her suspiciously, knowing there was probably more she wasn't saying, but he had no time to prod further the case called for them. They took their positions and made entry. Scanning the rooms and moving toward the lobby.
"Give me two," Tan said as they cleared a living area,
"Two," Chris patted his shoulder,
"Clear." Tan answered moments later as they kept moving.
A scream from upstairs, made everyone freeze. The hairs on Chris's arm prickled and a tingle ran down her spine. It was a desperate scream. She knew they needed to move fast. Within seconds they met the remainder of 20 David at the foot of the large marble staircase. Hondo led them up as Chris slid into position behind Deacon. Hand signals directed each team member once they got to the top. Hondo and Deacon moved towards the master bedroom suite as Luca and Tan headed left to clear the guest rooms, leaving Chris and Erika to take the rooms on the right. She gave Erika a nod as Erika swung the first door open.
"Closet," Erika said pointing to the wardrobe door ajar. Chris motioned for her to cover her.
She swung it open with her gun aimed, "Clear." They kept moving. More muffled voices and movement could be heard coming from the master suite, she knew Hondo and Deacon would be right outside those doors waiting for them to clear the rooms. She led Erika through 2 more rooms, before they approached the last one. She covered the door and hall as Erika entered, and then stepped in following her, nodding to the closet door. Erika swung it open as Chris cleared it.
"Clear" they both muttered turning their attention to Hondo and Deacon's position. As Chris took a step, she sensed something. She was about to stop Erika when a baseball bat swung out from under the bed and struck her ankle.
"Ahhhh!" She called as she stumbled.
"LAPD SWAT come out with your hands up, NOW!" Erika called swinging around and aiming her gun at whoever was under that bed.
"Sorry!" A small voice called. "I thought..."
Erika peered down and saw the hands of a child. 10 or 12 years old at the most.
"Come out, we're police." She motioned before looking up to Chris who was leaning on the wall wriggling her ankle.
"Shit!" Chris muttered with a grimace. "You have one hell of a swing." She said to the boy as he slid out and stood trembling.
"Are you okay?" Erika mumbled.
"Yeah," he nodded. They guided the young boy downstairs to waiting officers and returned to help the team. The take down was swift. 4 suspects arrested. 2 hostages saved and one large safe left sealed with no contents missing.
As the team walked out, Hondo helped her. She clearly was struggling to bear weight on it. "Alonso let me bring the EMT to you."
"No, Boss, It's okay, probably just a bruise."
"You are one tough and stubborn … Look at least get it iced as soon as we are out."
"Yes sir." She mumbled.
As she sat on the stretcher with her boot off and an EMT examining it her phone rang. She pulled it out and saw Jared's name. Remembering she hadn't text him back yet. She glanced about and answered it,
"Hi,"
"Hey,"
"You okay?" She asked.
"Me? Yeah, didn't you read my message." He asked
"Oh, sorry no, I was on a case. Just wrapping it up now." Chris explained
"Oh, well, I got a call from your ADA's office. Thanks for the heads up. I'll talk to you about it tonight."
"Okay," Chris nodded her head not 100% in the call as she fought back a growl when the EMT moved her ankle.
"You are busy, I just wanted to hear your voice." He said.
"I, I know, I love hearing yours too." She smiled.
