Chris stepped to Hondo and Buck, listening as he explained that Georgia is in the 4th grade, though he had no idea where her classroom was this year, as school had only just begun, and he hadn't been to see her here before. He also told them that Georgia's mother, is a close family friend of Jenny's and that she is a teacher there too.
"Okay, we will do all we can," Hondo nodded at Buck, patting his back reassuringly as he began to think through how to deal with this.
"Thanks Hondo," Buck answered, "I'm gunna go call Jenny and update her. She will be terrified." He motioned taking out his phone and stepping away to call her.
"Alright, Deac, Tan, Street," Hondo called, waving them all over. "What do you have?" He asked Deacon as they all assembled in a small circle in front of the screens on the mobile command trailer.
"Well, appears to be one shooter, top level of the main building. Here." Deacon pointed to the map. "Several GSW's already with EMT's but who knows what else we will find in there."
"Tan, Deacon and Street take the 2 side, Chris with me." Hondo said nodding at the team. "Fill the gaps,"
"Stay liquid," they all finished as they headed off in a line towards the main building.
Chris tucked in behind Hondo as he led them to the doors, she gently tapped his shoulder, so he knew she was ready, as they began moving into the building. The school had gone into full lockdown when this had started. Chris couldn't help but think how sad it was that schools even had to have these measures in place.
As they came to the restrooms they quickly entered, clearing them of any children or staff who might have sought shelter there. In the female bathrooms, they found 3 terrified students hiding. Chris quickly ushered them to the hallway they had cleared and straight outside to waiting officers.
Making their way up the first flight of stairs, they heard two-gun shots.
"Let's move," Hondo whispered to Chris, as they began moving rapidly along the hallway, clearing unlocked rooms and checking doors as they went.
"30 David to 20 David." Deacon's voice came through their ear pieces.
"Go ahead."
"Street is helping 2 boys both with GSW's to the legs downstairs to EMT's, Tan and I have the suspect in the library."
"Any visual?"
"Tan has a visual, eastern corner of the library, 2nd floor." Deacon answered.
"Take the shot if clear." Hondo ordered. He hated to think that this guy might hurt more innocent kids if they didn't act swiftly.
Within moments they heard a single shot, then Tan's voice telling them the shooter was down. As they began clearing classrooms and winding things up Chris emerged from the main doors with Deacon at her side.
"Did they find Georgia? And her mom?" She asked looking to him.
"I um," he glanced about, seeing Buck and Jenny near the command trailer he pointed, "I'd say that is Georgia."
Chris looked to where he was pointing to see a girl hugging Jenny but couldn't help but see the concerned looks on both of their faces, as their eyes searched the crowd for a sign of her mother.
"Doesn't look like her mom has been reunited yet." Chris observed.
"No, I'd say all the school staff are still over there with the other kids waiting for parents." Deacon pointed over to the crowd of the school children sitting on the ground with a group of teachers, school staff and uniformed police officers holding clipboards. All doing their best to match the children to the anxious parents who were gathered.
"I might grab Tan and go and help." Chris said, as she headed off in that direction.
School staff were organising the kids into lines and setting up desks and chairs for the staff to sit at whilst they matched the students to their parents and had the parents sign the collection forms.
"We'll take a row each." Chris offered, stepping to the neatly dressed lady closest to her holding a clipboard. "To help speed things along," she smiled kindly.
"Oh, thank you officers." She responded as she turned to see Tan and Chris. That is when Chris noticed her name tag. "Mrs Sommerson,"
"That's right." She smiled passing them both a clipboard. "Please call me Marissa."
"Your daughter, Georgia, is with Buck and Jenny," Chris pointed towards the line of parked police cars as she noticed Mrs Somerson's curious confused expression as she glanced about. "Sorry, um, Buck used to be our team leader and..."
"Oh, thank god," She smiled relieved, as she spotted them, she hugged Chris unexpectedly. "Thank you." There were tears welling in her eyes as she pulled back.
"Our pleasure, which lines?" Chris motioned to the kids, taking the clipboard, and passing one to Tan.
Soon, both of them were addressing each parent in their line and matching their names to the students waiting to be collected. It seemed never ending. There had to be 400 kids still waiting. Chris had been through around 6 sets of parents so far, the Miller's, Wallace's, Barnett's, Wilson's, Stone's and Keller's all safely reunited.
"Mrs Lauren Rivers." The next shaking voice explained. "My sons are Jordan and James; 3rd and 2nd grade."
"Thank you, Mrs Rivers, just a second." Chris tried to smile kindly and be a calm, reassuring presence for the visibly upset mother in front of her. A teacher behind, gathered the boys and directed them to the front of the line.
"MOMMY!" The boys cried, running up and hugging their mother.
That scene made Chris smile. As she grinned at the happy, relieved family she caught Tans eye. He was smiling too watching them. This is why they both loved their job so much. The happy endings. She was still grinning as she glanced back down over her list, when the voice in the line next to her, caught her attention.
"Caitlin Fardon, for Danielle, Pre-Kindergarten Day-care." The shaky, yet familiar voice said. Chris glanced up to see Caitlin standing at the front of the next line.
"Caitlin?" She muttered to herself. Her eyes squinting to ensure she saw her correctly. The teacher on that line had already found Danielle. A small fine-featured girl and walked her forward.
'Hmm, maybe she is picking up a niece or friends' child, or something.' Chris whispered in her head trying not to stare.
"Mommy," The little girl ran to Caitlin's arms and Caitlin scooped her up and turned away. Chris was reeling. She had a daughter? A small 3- or 4-year-old? The timing of that began to sink in as she attempted to get a look at Danielle, But Caitlin had hurried off, so quickly that Chris didn't know what to do next. She was frozen, the pit of her stomach suddenly felt sick. She passed the closest staff member her clipboard, apologising, and began walking away quickly. She had no idea where she was going but she needed a timeout, away from everything.
Street had just finished packing away equipment into the charger, when he saw her, from a distance, walking briskly across the lawn. She was heading towards the side garden. He noticed she looked upset. She seemed to be talking to herself, she pressed her fingers to her forehead and then shook her head as she gestured angrily with her hand. He was worried, he could tell something was wrong. He glanced about deciding whether he should go and follow her. To check she was okay, or should he still be focusing on giving her space? He wondered.
"Oh, to hell with that." He mumbled, beginning to walk, he couldn't watch her so upset and do nothing. As he rounded the path towards the side garden, he heard sobbing, he slowed his steps as his eyes landed on her. She was leaning against the wall. Her head in her hands.
"Hey? What's wrong?" He said softly, approaching her. She spun around and stared at him with wide eyes for a second, before cupping her face, turning away and crying again. In an instant he had pulled her against him and just held her,
"It's okay, I got you. I'm here." He rubbed her back lightly. "Breathe Chris, breathe." It felt like an eternity for him as he held her sobbing, not knowing what had just occurred to have her in this state. Eventually, she managed to get a lid back on her emotions.
"Sorry." She mumbled wiping her face, but not meeting his eyes. He nodded and loosened his arms, stepping back awkwardly.
"You okay?" He asked and she just nodded as she stared at her feet.
"Yep, sorry." She again swiped at her face and then began to walk past him, back towards the cars.
"Hey," he said tapping her arm as she passed him. "I …, please, What's wrong? Why this?" He asked softly gesturing to where she had just been crying. "I want to help, to understand."
She looked at him. She wished they were in the place where she could tell him, where he could be her best friend. In her head, after watching Danielle run to Caitlin and call her "Mommy," she had instantly done the math. Jared never said how long ago exactly they had broken up, just referred to it as a few years. But she couldn't help but think that Danielle was about the right age to be a product of that relationship.
"It's okay. I just over reacted." Chris tried to brush him off. She waved her hand at him dismissively and went to walk away.
"Chris, please." The way he pleaded, the sad tone in his voice as he looked deflated and helpless. It killed her inside. But she again raised her hand.
"I'm sorry, It's okay."
"Is it this? the case, or is it something else?" He asked stepping a bit closer not wanting her to run.
"It's not your problem." She answered, and with that she walked away. He stood reeling this time. Just seconds ago, the love of his life, stood in his arms crying and now again she was gone. He asked himself why? Why he always let himself do this? Get caught up in her and pushed away. But as he walked alone back towards the group he knew why. Because he loved her.
Chris opened the door of the closest Charger and climbed in. She closed the door and locked it. She needed a second. She drew out her phone. Her thumbs hovering over Jared's number. But could she call him and just make an accusation like this? That his ex has a daughter about the right age to be his. What if he doesn't know? What if he does and has been hiding it from her? Her head swirled as she stared blankly at the screen.
After a few seconds she pushed the call button, swallowing and holding the phone to her ear as it began to ring. Her head raging with what she would even say if he answered. As the call tone played in her ear her heart began to sink with every unanswered ring. She knew in the rational part of her brain that he was just busy and working, but the fact she couldn't get the answers she needed was killing her.
When she heard,
"You've reach Jared, leave me a message and I'll get back to you." She hung up, closing her eyes, as she slid the phone back into her pocket. She steadied her breaths and looked in the rear-view mirror. Hondo and Deacon appeared ready to go so she climbed out, straightened her vest, and walked back towards Black Betty.
She felt Streets eyes locked on her, but she couldn't return his glance. She did her best to ignore him for the entire ride back and whilst the team unpacked in the locker room. She managed to put on her best act and even laugh and joke with the guys. As the others left, she grabbed her bag and went to head out after Luca,
"Hey," She heard his voice as he closed his locker. "Are you okay? I'm worried about you."
She paused and looked at him with a sad smile. "I'll be okay. Don't worry about it." She waved a small wave, before letting the door bang behind her. She knew she shouldn't be mean to Street, but she couldn't talk to him about this until she had talked to Jared.
Her entire drive home she was shaking. She wasn't sure if it was fear or anger. She had no idea if Jared knew about this. If that child was even his, but in her gut she felt sick. As she pulled into her parking space, she looked at her phone. There was a message from Jared and one from Street.
She tapped Jared's.
"Hey babe, all, okay? Sorry, I was out following a lead."
It read. She began to type a response, but then deleted it. She couldn't even begin to tell him all of this through a text. For a brief second her thumb hovered over the call button. But she knew if she couldn't explain this in a text, she probably shouldn't do it in a call either. In that moment she knew that she needed to go see him.
She dialled Hondo and explained there was a family emergency and she needed two days. Hondo didn't mind as tomorrow was their last day for that block anyway.
"Sure, take the time. Let us know if you need anything." And with that she had climbed the stairs, threw things into an overnight bag and was back in her truck, pulling out to head to Las Vegas.
5pm became 10:30pm by the time she arrived at Jared's. Parking across the street from his address she saw his truck in the drive. As she sat there taking in his house, the street and the 5 hour drive she had taken, she realised she was scared. Scared that whatever was about to unfold would be the end of her relationship. She closed her eyes and prayed that Danielle was not his and this was all a misunderstanding.
