"What are you scared of Chris?" He clarified, squinting his eyes a little at her. "That he is going to fall back in love with Caitlin and that you'll get hurt?"
"I don't know!" She mumbled and curled back up tighter with the cushion.
"Can I be honest for a second?" He asked as he looked at her. She again moved her eyes to him, but in her head, she didn't want to hear what he had to say. She was a tiny bit scared that Street knew her too well and would point out some truths that she would then have to admit to herself. So, she looked back down at her feet, but gave a small nod.
"Well, Chris, I think right now you feel like you just want to run away from this situation, because it's scary and hard and there's a chance you will get hurt. I mean, I completely get that you are upset because of your "rules" and…"
She looked up again and her eyes on him made him pause. It was almost a shocked angry glare.
"Hey," he continued holding up his hands, "I'm not trying to criticize you Chris, I'm just saying what I see. You really wanted him to be your happy. I know that. And now it's like your scared that it might not be working out?"
She couldn't hold it together any longer. Hearing him voice that, she felt tears escape. She hid her face from him as she began to sob.
"Hey," he whispered, slowly moving to sit next to her. His arms around her shoulders bringing her against him. "Shhhhhhhh, I didn't mean to upset you." She just buried her face against him more and cried. They remained that way for a while.
"Sorry, you don't need this." She began as she sat up away from his arms. "You have your own things, I will be okay, you can go." Chris fumbled, trying to push him away.
"I'm not going anywhere Chris." He smiled at her as she looked uncomfortable and shifted out of his reach. "I came here to help. I want to be there for you. To listen and help if I can. You are not in this alone."
"Thanks." She mumbled as she returned her gaze to her hands. "But I do need to sleep and be ready for shift so..."
"Right, of course." He nodded wiping his hands on his pants. "I should go and give you space."
"I'm sorry, I'm not trying to throw you out, I just," her eyes hit his and for a brief moment she lost her train of thought and all of her confidence that she was okay and knew what she was doing. Him being that close, being there for her, sitting just inches from her…... her feelings for him suddenly hit her right in the gut. She realised there was a big part of her that wanted to reach for his hand and feel his arms around her again, that maybe she would rather it be him and not Jared.
"God, this is not fair on either of them I am such a screwed-up mess." She muttered in her head.
"You just need space," he managed as he stepped away towards the door. "I am here for you Chris. No matter what happens. And..." She glanced over to him as he opened the door. "I really hope that you two can work it out. I want you to be happy."
And with that he had closed the door and she was alone. She thumped the sofa angrily. Why the hell did she have to suddenly feel that again. She was even more confused now than ever.
The next morning as the 10am sun beaming down began to burn Street's forearm through the open window of the Charger, he looked back at Tan in the driver's seat.
"I hate downtown." He muttered with a chuckle, pulling his arm in, and rubbing at it.
"Yeah, it's hot today." Tan eyed him and rolled up the windows, hitting the A/C on button. They were on their way to the courthouse to pick up a few warrants for Hondo. A medial task they usually performed a few times each shift rotation.
Around 20 minutes later as they made their way up towards the judge's rooms, Street skipped a step hearing Molly's laugh. Turning the corner, he and Tan were almost face to face with her and Caitlin as they stood talking.
"Thanks Caitlin, I'll see you for dinner, around 7pm at my place." Molly said.
"I'm looking forward to it, and thanks for going over those case files with me last night. Your thoughts and ideas really helped the prosecution's case. See you later." Caitlin smiled as she turned in the other direction. Street's eyes followed Caitlin as she walked away. This was the ex-girlfriend Chris had been talking about. He was watching her curiously as Molly spun around and almost walked right into a stunned Street.
"Oh, Sorry." She mumbled, shaking her head slightly, before she suddenly registered that the man, she had all but collided with was wearing a SWAT uniform. Her eyes slowly wandering up as the blush drained from her cheeks.
"Jim," she mumbled in a surprised exhale, as his dimples appeared in a nervous smile.
"Hi, Molly." He answered, not quiet meeting her eyes. She stood looking at him without a word before he spoke again. "Tan and I are just on our way up to see Judge Escott for a warrant." He said, as if he needed to explain why they were there. She looked across to Tan with a polite nod.
"Right, of course. Sorry, I was, not watching, I."
"It's fine. All good." Street answered smiling.
"Well, have a nice day, I'll…."
"Wait, Molly," Street said gently holding up his hand as he gave Tan a small nod and moved his eyes towards the Judges office, telling him to go ahead without him and give him a minute. Tan answered with a subtle nod and stepped away without a word.
"How are you?" He asked trying to find something to say. Inside he was dying to ask about Caitlin. Were they friends? Was that weird or just weird to him given their circumstances.
"Good, you?" She replied studying him and fidgeting nervously.
"I'm okay, you know just working and ..." His dimples twitched at how awkward this was.
"Right, same." Molly cut him off. "How's Chris?" Her question almost made him choke.
"Um, okay, I guess, busy with Jared and stuff so..." He felt like he needed to throw that in, so she didn't assume he and Chris were together. Then felt shitty about feeling like that.
"Hey, ah, Was that Caitlin Fardon the prosecutor?"
"Yeah," Molly nodded eyeing him. She was almost trying to hide a smirk. "Why do you ask?"
"Are you two friends?" He asked looking to where she had disappeared.
"We are, she's a great girl." Molly continued as Street tried to process it. "Why? Oh, just that Chris mentioned she was Jared's ex, and you know,"
Molly nodded. "You feel protective over her." She gently touched his arm and smiled. "You need to fight for her Jim." She added,
"I, um, she is happy with him and…" he stammered shocked.
"Is she?" Molly added with a smirk, like she had knowledge he didn't, before she readjusted her bag and added, "It was good to see you." And then walked away. Jim was left standing there. Trying to work out what had just happened.
After shift, Street hung around and waited for Chris to leave.
"See you tomorrow." She smiled and waved as they parted ways near the boxing ring.
"Yeah, see you. Hey, call me if you need…"
"I'll be fine." She cut him off and shot him a glare. Telling him not to say anything here at HQ about her personal dramas.
"Just saying," he shrugged with a wink as his dimples emerged.
Before he headed out, he stood in front of the computer in the empty tech lab. He had had a crazy idea after running into Molly to search up Caitlin in their database and see what he could find. But as he stood looking at the blinking cursor, he knew he couldn't. That digging around in an innocent civilian's personal records was not okay, and honestly, it was none of his business and he knew how pissed Chris would be if he did that. So, he sighed and closed the search box. Internally cursing at himself for even considering that an option. He just desperately wanted to help her.
'Maybe I should just keep my nose out of it.' He mumbled as he picked up his backpack and walked out.
Meanwhile, back across town Caitlin had just arrived with a bottle of wine on Molly's doorstep.
"Hey," Molly hugged her friend briefly after opening the door.
"Hi," she smiled holding out the wine.
"Oh yes please." Molly laughed taking it and pouring them a glass each. Caitlin settled onto a stool at the island bench and watched Molly plate up their dinner. Some small talk about their day ensued, which eventually after dinner and a second glass of wine, led Molly to ask Caitlin about any guys she was dating.
"No, no one. Just me and Danielle." She answered.
"You?"
"Um, no. Let's just say after things with Jim. I need time." Molly explained.
"I totally understand that. I don't think I'm ready to date again to be honest. And it's been 4 years." She added with a laugh.
"Tell me, how are you feeling about him coming and wanting to catch up? I mean I saw you after that call last night and…"
"And what?" Caitlin shot back a little defensively.
"You seemed unsettled?" Molly replied with concern in her voice.
"I, I was thrown." Caitlin said looking into her wine glass.
"Why?"
"Because after 4 years, the fact that he has definitely moved on, is with a new girl, I'm just so confused and I have no idea why? and ..."
"Maybe he just wants to reconnect and be friends again?"
Caitlin let out a loud laugh. "Not after how I ended things. I'm sure he hated me for it. And he is happy now so…"
"No jealousy or regret there?" Molly joked,
Caitlin blinked briefly and side. "No, the past is the past. Best to move on."
"Yeah, things happen for a reason, right?" Molly observed her friend who looked deep in thought.
A few days later as Chris arrived home, mid-morning from a rough night shift, she huffed annoyed with herself. She still hadn't worked out how she was feeling yet. She had remained in contact with Jared, but until she knew what this situation really was, she felt like they were on some kind of a weird pause, or in limbo or something. Add to that the fact that since she returned that night from Las Vegas, Street had been trying to be supportive and kind, whilst not smothering her, and it wasn't particularly helping. Especially after that rush of feelings he made her feel that night.
She threw her keys and phone on to the shelf near the door and tugged off her shirt. It was hot and she needed a shower. As the tepid water cooled her skin and rinsed away the sweat, she tried to clear her mind. The cool water running through her smooth hair and onto her scalp was heaven. However, her bliss was short lived as she heard her phone ringing out there in the living room.
She sighed and turned off the water. Wrapping herself quickly in a towel and jogging out to it as the water dripped from her skin.
Jared's name was on the caller ID.
"Hey." She answered tiptoeing back towards the bathroom to the bathmat.
"Hi, you home yet?" He asked.
"Yeah, I was just in the shower."
"Ohhhhh," there was an inflection and tease to his voice that made her smirk and roll her eyes.
"No, I am not turning my camera on." She giggled.
"Oh, you are no fun!" He shot back with a laugh.
"What's up?"
"I just wanted to let you know that I will be leaving in the morning." He said with a happy tone.
"What? It's over? You wrapped up the case?" She asked with a bit of disbelief in her voice.
"Uh huh, an hour ago." He answered sounding happy and relieved.
"Oh, congratulations, I'm so happy for you."
"Me too, but I'm more happy about coming to LA so we can finally work on fixing this mess and spending more time together."
Chris felt herself smile, but she also felt a little sick inside. She was scared about this all. Worried about how this would play out. The trauma it could inflict on their relationship. She stood breathing deeply after he hung up to let her shower. She was telling herself that it will all be okay, breathe and relax. But she felt like hyperventilating and crying. The worry, nerves and uncertainty were killing her.
