Chris again blew out a few slow, low breaths, trying to get control of herself. She ran the cuff of her jumper sleeve under her eyes, attempting to wipe away the smudged mascara as she stood upright and pushed back out of his arms. The shock of those realisations hit her hard, and she needed to put distance back between them.
"Sorry, thanks." She mumbled motioning to his hug as his arms fell to his side.
"You should um, talk to him about all of that Chris." He suggested softly.
"Yeah, I know. Sorry you had to hear it all." She motioned behind her and then to her smudged red and blotchy face.
"It's fine. I promised you that I'd be here, for whatever you needed, no matter what happened. I meant that." He chuckled as he picked up his beer and motioned to the sofa's. "Come on sit, lets watch some trashy TV and get you smiling again."
They both sat watching TV for a while, before a yawning and very exhausted Chris, made him smile and politely excuse himself for the night. He made her promise to call if she needed anything.
As Chris agreed and said goodbye at the door, she knew the way she felt with Street was how she should feel with Jared. Relaxed, content, comfortable and loved. But with Jared lately, all she felt was anxious, on edge, worried and scared. The stuff with Caitlin and the gut feeling that there was more there on both sides was something she just couldn't shake.
The next week passed quickly. Jared was busy with his case, trying to find the remaining criminal members of the crew he was chasing. Meaning they only spoke on the phone every other day and even then, when they did call, he was exhausted, or Chris's time was cut short by a pending shift. So, truth be told, they hadn't really 'talked' as such about the Caitlin issue. It almost felt more like they were just calling to keep the relationship alive rather than actually trying to fix it.
Chris knew something had to change, but the timing of their calls just never really gave her the chance to bring it up.
During Jared's next shift he and his partner escorted a suspect they had captured to the local hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound to the leg.
As Jared walked back along the corridor with paperwork looking for the nurse he paused, hearing a familiar voice. As he looked up, he had to looked twice. In the waiting room across from him stood Caitlin with Danielle in her arms. She looked upset and scared and was speaking with a doctor. He furrowed his brows wondering what on earth she was doing here.
He reclipped the pen to his clipboard and tucked it under his arm, approaching the waiting room as the doctor moved away from her.
"Caitlin?" He began, "Are you? I mean, is everything okay?"
Caitlin spun around hearing him. Her eyes were full of tears as she bit her lip trying not to cry. She couldn't quiet process that it was actually him standing in front of her, but at the same time she was so damn happy to see him.
"Caitlin?" He said again softly as he moved a fraction closer.
"Ah, no, it's um, Mom." She got out before a few sobs racked her body. Jared moved to her side and guided her to sit down. As she placed Danielle down and she moved to the chair to watch the cartoons on the TV overhead.
"Hey, I'm here, breathe." He said softly. As she looked to Danielle and after a few moments she wiped her face and took a deep breath.
"Sorry, it's um, Mom. She ..." She stopped as her jaw clenched, and she tried not to cry.
"What? What happened to your Mom?" He asked with a concerned tone, watching her.
"It's ah, her heart." She managed. "Heart attack, they think. She is in the ICU and, God, I'm scared." She looked at Danielle, who seemed to be too engrossed in the cartoons to take in what was happening.
Jared sat with her for a few more minutes, gently patting her back and listening to her ramble about it all, whilst he continued to ignore his beeping phone.
"Look, Sorry," She gestured to his buzzing pocket. "You have things to do, you're clearly on duty. Sorry, go, I'm okay. Dad is on his way in, he will be here soon and it's fine." She said all but shooing him away.
"Okay, but I mean anything Caitlin. I know despite everything, you might think it's weird, but your parents were always like family. I'm here if you need anything. Just call me okay."
She watched him walk away and again wondered about her feelings. In her moment of need right then, she felt that part of her didn't want him to leave. She wanted him to stay. To be her rock. To be safe arms for her to fall into, but she knew she couldn't think about that. That he was with Chris. That they were trying to fix things. Despite the mess that her finding out about Danielle had made. Caitlin hung her head, feeling horrible about that. She swallowed hard and looked away from him. He deserved to be happy. And she really hoped he was.
