A/N: Shorter chapter than normal, but I wanted to at least get something up.

Chapter 44

Attempting to leave Trish's house had never been harder. She took in the new baby smell as she gave Layla a soft kiss on her forehead. She begrudgingly handed the baby over to her mother. "Bye sweet girl. We'll see you again soon," she promised. "You guys going to be at back-to-school night?"

"We'll be there. Luke might stay home with Layla, but we'll see how it plays out."

"Alright, we'll see you tomorrow then," Clarke said as she gave Trish and the baby a quick hug. "Night, Tommy," she waved to the little boy.

Realizing they were leaving, Tommy ran to give Clarke a hug, then Avery. After a bit of hesitation, he reached out to Lexa as well. She smiled at him and knelt to give him a quick hug.

After a few more goodbyes the trio finally made their way home. Each of them grabbed some bags before making their way into the house. The ones that held all of Avery's new clothes were dropped near the washing machine so Clarke could wash them later.

Clarke sent Avery up to get ready for bed. With school starting this week, she needed to get back on schedule. Not that she'd let her stay up extremely late, but still later than would be good for a school night.

After both women said goodnight to the girl, they decided to head to bed themselves. Getting them both up and ready for work would be not entirely new to them, but still different enough they would probably need to make some adjustments from their old routine.

Just as they were crawling into bed, a sudden thought popped into Clarke's mind. She couldn't believe they hadn't talked about it. "How are you getting to work?"

Lexa opened her mouth to speak, but then realized she didn't have an answer. With everything going on, it honestly hadn't occurred to her. Driving across the country alone hadn't sounded like a whole lot of fun. Plus, she wanted to get to Clarke and Avery as quickly as possible, so she sold the small car she only used occasionally and flew instead. "I have no idea," she admitted honestly.

"I'd say we could just carpool since the station is so close to the hospital, but both of hours can be unpredictable at times. I guess for now you'll have to take my car and I'll take my dad's truck. I guess it's a good thing we didn't give it to Derek yet. Mom and I were talking about it, but we hadn't done it yet."

"I bet he would appreciate having it."

"And it would get driven more. I don't mind taking it, but Avery still won't go near it." Clarke wouldn't push the issue either. She didn't have the same memories of Jake that Avery did. She hadn't spent hours in that same truck with him like Avery had.

"Poor girl," Lexa sympathized. "I guess we'll do that tomorrow then. I'll have to see if I get a like a company car."

"That would be nice. You are still going to need something to drive outside of work, however. Public transport isn't as convenient out here."

Lexa sighed. That was one nice thing about D.C. She really only even had a car for those time she absolutely needed one. She mostly just either walked or took public transport. "You're right."

"We'll just have to add a trip to the dealership into our immediate schedule."

"The? As in singular?" Lexa gave a smirk. Clarke's choice of words was odd, but she was sure she meant it just as she said it.

Clarke laughed, realizing how that would probably sound. "We only shop from one family of dealerships in this house," she said with all seriousness. Still there was a hint of humor in her voice.

Lexa nodded and picked up her phone from where it was charging. "Alright, car shopping is now added to my to-do list."

Clarke peaked over at Lexa's phone, "What else is on that list?"

Lexa turned her phone around so Clarke could see. There really wasn't any reason to hide it from her. Everything on it Clarke knew about, except maybe one item.

To-Do:

1. Pass test

2. Find new job

3. Move to California

4. Propose to Clarke

5. Start new job

6. Buy new clothes? If needed for new job

7. Get Married

8. Adopt Avery

9. Get a pet

10. Buy a car

"Well, I do like this list. But I'm curious about the 'Get a pet'," she admitted.

"I've never had one. I thought maybe Avery would like to have a dog, or a cat. I'm not sure. I'd have to do some research. See what the best pet would be to have." Of course, Lexa would want to do some research.

"I would be okay with that. Maybe…" Clarke started typing on Lexa's phone. When Lexa tried to look, Clarke moved it further away and finished typing before handing it back. "I thought it needed some things."

11. Family trip/Honeymoon

12. Practice baby making

13. Have a baby

Lexa laughed to read number twelve. "Practice? I don't think it works that way," she smirked.

"No, but it doesn't mean we can't try." Clarke wiggled her eyebrows and then broke out laughing.

"I will admit, after tonight, a baby was definitely getting added to the list," Lexa admitted. Holding Layla had stirred something inside of Lexa. It wasn't that she didn't want to have kids with Clarke before. It was just that holding a baby in her arms had brought a longing she didn't know she could have.

"Yeah?" Clarke watched Lexa smile and nod. "She was adorable, wasn't she?"

Lexa knew immediately who Clarke was talking about. "She was precious. I could have held her all night."

"I know what you mean. I actually did that with Avery a few times."

"You did?"

Clarke laid down and signaled for Lexa to do the same. They really needed to get to sleep soon if they wanted to be rested for work. She waited until they were both comfortable before going on. "She was just so tiny. I was so afraid to let her out of my sight incase something happened. The first night we came home from the hospital I barely put her down, and even when I did, she was right next to me. Mom had to convince me to let her sleep in her basinet. She was a year old before I let her sleep in her own room," she admitted softly.

That didn't really surprise Lexa. If she had been in Clarke's shoes, she might have done the same. Avery's room was just across the hall, but so many things could happen. She'd seen her fair share of those things on the job. To be a teenager with those worries, she couldn't imagine. She didn't respond, instead just pulled Clarke into her arms and placed a kiss on the top of her head.

"We should sleep," she heard Clarke whisper a few minutes later. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight sweetheart."

~CL~

Clarke woke quickly when their alarm went off the next morning. As usual though Lexa tried to sleep through it. She was honestly surprised Lexa had slept so well. She would have probably spent half the night tossing in anticipation of starting somewhere new.

She was fully expecting that to be the case when she hopefully started her new job. She would have to find some time in the day to talk to Margie and tell her she wanted to take the job before talking to her boss about quitting.

Gently nudging Lexa awake, she all but pulled the other woman into the bathroom. They took a quick shower. Well maybe not as quickly as it could have been since they stopped to exchange a few heated kisses. They never let it get further than that.

"You want something to eat?" Clarke asked as they were getting dressed. She always made sure to eat something before work because she never knew when she would get the chance to eat again. For Lexa it always depended on the day.

"It probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm not sure what my day is going to be like," Lexa answered. She knew she would spend at least part of the day filling out paperwork and meeting everyone she'd be working at. She didn't know if she'd get put on any cases or anything though.

Clarke fixed them up some toast and cut up fruit while Lexa made them some coffee. They were completely in sync. You wouldn't know Lexa hadn't been living here for long. She was at home as she moved around the kitchen to get the needed supplies.

Lexa poured them each a small cup to drink with their meal. The rest she poured into a thermos for Clarke to take with her to work. She knew her fiancé would be doing that anyway. Lexa wasn't really a coffee drinker, but she didn't mind it from time to time.

They mostly ate in silence, both a little anxious for the day. "At least I get to show off my ring," Clarke smiled and looked at her ring again. At the moment it was on her finger, but she'd put a chain around her neck, so she'd have someplace to keep it if she had any surgeries.

Lexa smiled back and grabbed the other woman's hand a ran her thumb over the ring. She still had a hard time believing this was all a reality now. They lived together and were getting married. The future seemed so exciting.

As they made their way towards the garage, Clarke went through their keys hanging by the door and found the extra set for her SUV and gave them to Lexa. "You're supposed to be off by 4:30, right?"

"I should be, yes."

"Alright. We need to leave the house by 5:45 to get to Avery's school on time," Clarke informed her.

Lexa wiggled her head back and forth in thought. "That should be doable."

"See you tonight then. I hope you have a great day at your new job," Clarke told her with a hint of excitement. They exchange a kiss before separating to climb into their vehicles.

Lexa put the address in her phone. She had a good idea where she was going, but you couldn't be too careful. She didn't want to start off on the wrong foot by being late. As she as she had it all set up, she was for the first day of the rest of her career.
