Chris sucked in a deep breath dropping her phone on the couch as they said goodbye soon after. Part of her was relieved but there was also a part of her heart that was broken. Jared had asked her to keep in touch, which she had agreed to. But honestly, inside, she didn't see the point. She couldn't picture her and Jared fixing things, at all right now. They both needed to walk away and sort out their messes. So, for her, this was goodbye for good. As she thought that she sighed. She did hope they would at least stay friends though.
The next day at HQ, Chris was quiet. She deliberately avoided being alone anywhere that Street might corner her. She knew him. She knew he would be dying to ask about what had happened? What had come of that phone call? As she stood remembering how quickly he had fled her apartment last night, she felt a little hurt. But she knew why. She knew he wanted her to have space to figure things out with Jared. To her, really, it was no contest. Her feelings for Street outweighed those for Jared. She understood that now. But how on Earth could she admit that to him, how on earth were they ever supposed to be more than teammates and friends.
Trying to reason through things with herself, she sighed. Thinking about this was distracting her from the work she needed to do on the files in front of her. She glanced at her watch, it was 2 hours passed her lunch break, and as she scrunched her lips, she felt her tummy rumble. Glancing about she pushed back the chair and headed to the kitchen to grab her sandwich and a water from the fridge. She had just closed it and was turning around when she heard Street's voice.
"Hey, there you are. I've been trying to find you all day." Chris glanced up to see him walking in, and she just looked at him. Like she was waiting for him to say more. She had no idea what to tell him right now. As she tried to think of something he spoke again frowning at her. "You okay? I mean you're really quiet and barely even said Good Morning today?"
"Yeah," she sighed slightly. "I'm okay, I just …..." She paused and looked down, picking at the label on her water bottle. Street licked a little nervously at his lip and moved closer to lean on the bench across from her.
"So, um," he began as he watched her. "Did you and Jared…." he tilted his head side to side and looked at her. "You know, talk, figure it out?" Inside he was holding his breath and dreading hearing her say yes.
As Chris inhaled and sighed, trying to formulate her response, the door banged open.
"Let's go we got a good one." Luca's beaming smile and impatient eyes kind of felt like a 'saved by the bell' moment.
"Let's go." Chris nodded, looking to Street, and then turning to walk to the door. Street blew out a breath, a little frustrated.
20 David gathered in the briefing room. As Hicks entered, he flicked on the monitors, and pointed to helicopter news footage of a speeding truck which was being pursued by a sea of patrol cars. They all watched the footage as Hicks began to explain what was going on.
"Long Beach PD are currently chasing this semitrailer," he pointed up at the screen, "being driven by one Ian Rulings, wanted on 18 warrants going back 3 years." Hondo glanced a concerned frown at Deacon knowing that there was more to this, and that he probably wasn't going to like it.
"CI's close to Rulings have confirmed that that truck is loaded with dirty explosives."
The team glanced at each other then back up to the footage.
"He is on his way up the interstate, headed for a target in downtown LA." Hicks continued.
"So, what's the plan?" Deacon asked leaning on the table and looking from Hicks to Hondo and back again. "If we set up a roadblock or spike the tyres a crash could mean…"
"Yes," Hicks interrupted. "The plan proposed by Long Beach PD is that we disable the trucks engine safely, with a precise shot from a 50 calibre into the intake manifold. As you said," he motioned to Deacon as he looked back at the team. "Road spikes or a roadblock could lead to a chance of the truck crashing and exploding."
"Ok, so hit a target the size of a lunchbox, on a truck travelling down a busy interstate at 100miles per hour," Luca squinted his eyes and glanced up at the footage again. "Sure, should be no problem." He chuckled a little sarcastically.
"That's why we're the best." Hicks smirked with a wink. "Street and Hondo you're in the chopper trying to get the shot from above. Chris and Tan you will set up here," Hicks pointed to the map. "On this overpass, and Deac and Luca you take the Gurkhas and be Chris and Tans back up on the freeway."
The mission was intense, high pressure and fast paced. Just the type of thing that they were trained for.
Around 3 hours later, it was all over. 20 David had again saved the city. LA was safe. Rulings had been arrested and taken into custody, whilst HAZMAT teams were on scene and dealing with the load.
Street and Hondo had not been able to make the shot from the helicopter as each time it got close enough the truck driver became erratic. Dangerously swerving all around the road. So, Chris had found a hidden perch on an overpass and successfully taken the shot. Disabling the trucks engine quickly and safely. Deacon and Luca along with uniformed offices were then able to swoop in and arrest the driver, securing the hazardous load.
As they returned to HQ, Hicks and other officers clapped and congratulated them on a job well done. During the detailed debrief Hicks looked up to Chris.
"Your marksmanship was impressive today, Alonso, I expect to see that in the Master Gunner competition coming up this month." There was a slight smirk on his face as he nodded approvingly at her.
She couldn't help but smile a little embarrassed. Having her work acknowledged felt good, and for once didn't feel like her life was going to hell.
As debrief finished, Deacon and Hondo both added their congratulations and a pat on the back. She thanked them both and that's when she caught sight of Street hanging around waiting for her. So, as Deacon and Hondo left, she slowly looked up to him. She knew they needed to talk. That she couldn't avoid him forever. She motioned with a tilt of her head for him to follow her, as she turned and walked towards the locker room to freshen up.
