That same week, Street had gone into HQ early to talk to Hondo and Hicks about leaving SWAT and the logistics of this transfer. They were both a little sad to be losing him, but happy for him and this opportunity. It was decided that he would finish the block of shifts on 20 David and then transfer over to the new taskforce. This was the new start for him. For he and Chris. High on the to do list was also that call to Sgt. Michaels to tell him that he would accept the offer. It was easy to say that Officer Jim Street, was nervous, excited, and terrified all at the same time. This felt like such a big moment in his life and career.
As he wandered the hall, still in a bit of a daze about it all, Chris arrived and was making her way inside to get ready for shift.
"Hey," she smiled seeing him as she rounded the corner, tugging her bag strap tighter.
"Hi," he smiled back. Everything instantly feeling better cause she was around.
"So," she said slowly as she reached him. "How did your meeting go?" She asked as her eyes danced with his. Searching for an answer. Trying to read his demeanour. He stepped close to her and reached for her hand, seeing that no one was around.
"It was good, they were both a bit shocked, but they were really happy for me. Hicks will start the paperwork and I'll switch over for the next block of shifts." He answered, stepping a fraction closer again, making her grin and widen her eyes at him.
"Not here." She chuckled as he leant in and quickly dropped a peck on her cheek.
"I want this you know." He whispered stepping back, but not releasing her hand.
"Ditto." She smiled at him.
"We ah, well," he paused and glanced back towards the gym area. "I think, we um, should fill the team in, on my move and this." He motioned between them. She nodded thinking about that.
"Yeah, I guess we should." She answered as he smiled back at her,
"What? Does that make you nervous?" He asked.
"No, not nervous as in doubting this, I just wonder how they will take it." She replied.
"Hey," he squeezed her hand. "I'll be here every step. I don't need their approval or blessing, but it would be nice. Afterall they are our family. And if this move means we can..." She stepped with him and motioned to walk.
"Shhhh!" She shot wide eyes at him and shook her head. "I know, I know, but your gunna give it away if you keep on blabbing." She smiled biting her lip and letting go of his hand.
They both walked casually back towards the gym area. Hondo was in the ring with Deac, and Tan and Luca were on the bikes.
"Hey, um, guys?" Street started. "Can I have a minute?" He asked watching them share confused looks but saw Hondo wink at him and nod approvingly.
As they gathered in front of him, they formed a relaxed circle. All looking expectantly at Street, waiting for whatever this pending announcement was.
"So, as you know I'm not long back from the TLI and Germany thing..." He began, seeing Luca smile proudly at him. "And um, as you know that can open doors and well doors have opened." He saw Deacon look at him with confusion at first but then his eyes squinted and scanned over Chris. He knew he had to continue and get to it before they all read the situation themselves.
"I have been offered 2nd in command of the new delta taskforce at South Division." He got out as Tan and Luca stammered.
"What wait? You did? Wow?"
"Man, I am so proud of,"
"Yeah, and there is more..." He said looking a little unsure at Chris as he cut Luca off. She smiled and gave him a 'go for it' nod.
"I am leaving 20 squad because this is an amazing opportunity yes, but..." he paused and smiled at her again. Reaching out his hand towards her. She looked at it briefly, before a smile filled up her whole face and she took a step closer to him to take it. "Chris and I, we are, want to be able to explore a relationship."
The eyes of everyone present went wide, but Deac wore a huge smile as Chris licked her lip and glance to him. He gave her a knowing and approving nod.
"Oh man? What?" Luca said as he stepped to them both and wrapped his arms around them. "You two? Together? That's the best news ever, you are so perfect for each other…"
Soon Tan, Hondo and Deac had added their congratulations. Chris was relieved that her work family had approved.
As Street spent the day finalising paperwork and things, she took a moment as she figured she should probably reach out to Jared. She didn't want her past to be an issue for his career moving forward. So that same day she flicked him a text.
"Hey, long time no talk."
Jared had been surprised to see her name on his phone. Sitting back in his chair as he tapped it open. It made him smile a bit.
"Hi. Yeah. Sure is. We kinda didn't stay in touch huh?" Chris nodded to herself reading his reply. They were both at fault there.
"Yeah, I guess we both just needed space. Hey listen. Street told me about the offer, you being here and all that. I am really happy for you Jared." Again, he smiled as he read it.
"So, how did things work out in that regard, in the end? Street wasn't saying much the other day. Did you guys fix things?" Chris bit her top lip and grimaced slightly. She wasn't sure why admitting what was developing there was worrying her.
"We are working on it, slowly. Your offer might just remove the last obstacle." She reread it a few times and shook her head sending it. Jared nodded and smiled.
"Please stop feeling weird about it Chris. (I know you are) because I am happy for you two." Chris smiled and blew out a breath. Maybe it would be okay she thought to herself. She was about to type back when he sent another.
"And hey maybe we will see you guys at the LAPD BBQ on Saturday?"
'Oh shit,' she muttered, she hadn't really thought about seeing him face to face so soon. Would it be weird? Awkward? But as she sat thinking about what to type, she twitched her lips. She had to be able to deal with this and make it work. For Street. He deserved this chance, and her past couldn't play a role in stuffing that up. So, she gave herself a pep talk about being a grown up and simply replied.
"Yeah, we are on call, but would be a nice way for Street to say goodbye to 20 Squad."
