Summary: Remus, Sirius, and Marlene witness Lily and James' first kiss (maybe), but they're still not getting together...
Jam Smears and First Kisses
Somehow, and he was still trying to work out how it had happened, Remus and Marlene had managed to get Sirius in the common room to study for their looming exams, sitting at a table in the corner. The same exams that weren't for another eight weeks. Plenty of time. And yet, here he was, rocking precariously on the back two legs of his chair, idly flicking through a Transfiguration textbook.
Every now and then Marlene, sitting next to him, would tap one of the legs with her foot, causing it to wobble and Sirius to panic. She would give him a wicked grin, yank the chair back onto all four legs and point to the empty parchment that should've had notes on it.
The entrance to the common room opened up to reveal James and Lily coming in. They didn't even look towards them, instead they remained by the entrance, talking quietly to each other.
Sirius leant closer to Marlene, tapping at Remus' parchment to make him look. "I think we've finally reached a critical point, everyone!"
"What do you think they're saying?" Marlene asked, reaching over to the pile of scones a plate in the middle of the table. She spread a small amount of jam on the half-slice, offering it to Remus, who refused.
She bit into it and showed the contents of her mouth to Sirius when he said, "Why is it you never offer me any food?"
Sirius snatched the remnants of the scone off her and stuffed it into this mouth, nearly choking on an errant crumb he'd inhaled. Marlene smirked as she flicked the knife still sitting in the jam pot. It made an awful clatter across the table before hitting Sirius' white shirt, leaving a pink-purple trail of jam down it before falling to the floor.
The three friends immediately looked to James and Lily to see if they were looking.
They were not. In fact, they were finally kissing!
"Think it's their first one? Are we witness to their first kiss?" Marlene asked, her voice hissing in Sirius' ear.
Lily suddenly pulled away, her cheeks bright red. "I shouldn't have done that," she apologised, quickly running in the direction of the girls' dormitory.
Sirius slammed his hand on the table, making the plate of scones rattle. "And the princess and the idiot decided that their kiss didn't mean anything. Because in the end... they were both idiots."
"Merlin. Dramatic much. They'll figure it out," Marlene muttered as they watched James ignore them and go back out of the common room.
