The Carnival "Date" – Part 2
Part 2! Yayyy! Hope you all like this chapter. This dives deep into Dean's mind and why he does what he does. Please let me know what you think. Like I said in the previous chapter I am not sure how I feel about where the story is heading.

"I'll be back at four. Good luck." Sam announced from the Impala window before driving away.
For a moment there was silence as Holly and Dean looked at the spectacle before them of rides, games and food stands. It was busy and loud. Screams of excitement could be heard coming from the rides, the chatter of people echoed into one big swarm of noise. There was a strong aroma of sugar, fried dough, and hot dogs. Holly had not been to a carnival in a long time and it brought her back to when she was a little girl oblivious to the real hardships of life; and monsters and ghosts, were only in bad dreams.
Dean scrunched up his face at the sight of the carnival looking uncomfortably at the unfamiliar territory. He did not like being around so many people. It was hard to concentrate and focus. There were just too many things to be aware of and take in.
After a long moment of just taking in the sight, Dean finally spoke.
"Alight, let's go." He stated as he began to walk into the sea of people. Taking a deep breath Holly followed behind him.
After walking for only about a minute. Dean stopped abruptly and looked at Holly. "You said you wanted a funnel cake, right?" He asked her in a kind of business-like manner.
Holly blinked slightly a bit taken back by his abruptness. They haven't even been in the carnival for five minutes and already he was asking her about the funnel cake. Holly wasn't sure if he was just wanted to get her request out of the way so they could focus on the case or he just simply remembered. "Well, I…yeah." Holly said fumbling with her words a bit at his unexpected question.
"Go sit over there." He said pointing to an empty table with an umbrella that provided a nice shady spot. "I'll bring it to you." He said it in such a business-like way that Holly found herself confused. If he was trying to mask any emotion, he was doing an exceptional job of it.
Holly nodded and went to do as she was told. It wasn't long before Dean came back with a large funnel cake doused with powdered sugar. Holly's eyes widened when Dean placed the sugar mountain in front of her. Dean sat down across from her giving her a confused look.
"What's wrong? I asked for a funnel cake and that's what they gave me." Dean said looking a bit worried that he bought her the wrong thing.
"It's huge." Holly stated surprised.
"Well they only had one size." Dean said shrugging his shoulders pointing a quick finger at the fried dough.
"There is no way I can finish this. You're gonna have to help me eat it." Holly stated in hopes that Dean would have some of the sugary dough with her. She couldn't possibly finish it all and there was a part of her that liked the idea of Dean sharing something with her. It was just…nice.
Dean reached over to rip a small piece off looking at it strangely. "What is it?"
"You never had a funnel cake?" Holly asked blinking her brown eyes in surprise.
"No." He said simply.
"It's basically fried dough with powder sugar on top. Kind of like a dough nut. It's really good. I would always get one as a kid when I went to carnivals. It wouldn't be a true carnival without one." Holly giggled remembering how her face would be covered in powdered sugar by the end.
Dean popped the small piece into his mouth and chewed it pausing for a brief moment as he took in the taste. "Damn." He said genuinely surprised. "That's good." He said simply reaching for another bite pulling off a bigger piece of the fried dough this time drenching it in powder sugar.
Holly smiled nodding genuinely glad he liked it. "What's not to like, fried dough and sugar. I can't believe you've never had one. Have you even been to a carnival?"
Dean paused for a moment looking up at Holly. "Yes, but only for hunting. Never really got a chance to come to one for fun."
"Oh." Holly said softly feeling her heart drop slightly for Dean. She wondered if he really had any fun during his childhood.
Dean shrugged. "Don't really have good memories of carnivals. Never really liked the crowds anyways." He said stuffing a piece of dough in his mouth. "I'm guessing you went a lot?"
"Not a lot, but I do remember a few times. Mostly good memories." Holly said feeling somewhat guilty that she had the good experiences and Dean did not. It seemed unfair somehow.
Dean nodded and there was an awkward silence for a long while which gave Holly a long time to think. Finally, after a little while she built up the courage to ask him a question that was weighing heavily on her mind.
"Dean." She stated softly grabbing his attention. "Do you…" She began, but stopped herself trying to collect her thoughts and her words. "Why are you different with me?"
Dean scrunched his eyebrows together in confusion, not quite sure what Holly was trying to ask.
"I mean why do you treat me different?" Holly asked putting her hands on her lap looking down at them feeling a sudden shyness build up. "Then other woman that is?" She added looking back up at Dean truly wanting to know the answer due to the fact that there was, in fact, a drastic difference. With other women he seems so brash and overly confident, but with her he was stiff and shielded almost like he was in solider mode most of the time. Sure, he teases her and jokes, but when it comes to emotional stuff Dean stiffens up like an impenetrable statue. Holly wants to feel that perhaps it's because he might have feelings for her, but it was hard to know. Being stern was not something Holly associated with affection very often. As far as Holly was concerned Dean was incomprehensible. Therefore, she'd hoped that perhaps she could get some answers if she simply asked him questions.
Dean was silent again for a long moment staring at Holly with stiff features like she asked something that he did not wish to answer. Holly fidgeted in her seat, beginning to feel uncomfortable and nervous at the silence Dean was giving her. Perhaps she shouldn't have asked.
When Dean finally spoke, his words were plain and direct. "You're a hunter, Holly. You're not like other women." His response was brief and honest, but did not dare disclose any rising feelings toward her. Dean had no wish to reveal anything. He did not want to make things more complicated and harder than things already were.
Holly was unsatisfied by the answer. Even though it was a direct answer to her question, it was lacking in the depth she desired. Dean seemed to rarely explain in depth about things, especially emotional things. He seemed to see things straightforward. To Holly things were far more complex.
Holly sighed biting her lower lip in thought as she began to think how she could explain things to Dean better. "You're always so…stern around me. You even go as far as treating me like…a child."
"I don't treat you like a child." Dean stated quickly obviously not agreeing with Holly's observation.
Holly felt a bitter annoyance creep up in her chest at his statement. In Holly's mind, that remark was a lie.
"Yes, you do, Dean. Often." Holly stated back frustrated, if not a little bit shocked by his opinion.
Dean just glared at her clicking his tongue feeling his own annoyance build up in him. He thought he had made things clear to Holly, but it seems like she was just not understanding him and it made him extremely frustrated. He knew she was not used to this life and she was still adjusting, but he felt like Holly was fighting against it more than it was a lack of understanding at this point.
"Oh, don't look at me like that. You can't seriously think you don't? Ordering me around, telling me what to do all the time, spanking me." Once the words left Holly's lips, she realized they were not in the private comfort of a hotel room, but out in public. Holly's cheeks blushed and began to look around her feeling embarrassment creep into her body. Luckily, it appeared that everyone was minding their own business cluelessly engaged in their own conversations.
Holly swallowed turning her head back toward Dean who was staring at her with a stern glower appearing to not care about the people that surround them, not even offering a glance in any direction. Dean's eyes stayed glued on Holly.
Dean let out a deep sigh before he spoke. "I give you orders for your safety and following them is essential to your survival. No matter how small they may seem to you they are for a reason and they are important. I do not treat you like a child. I treat you like a solider."
"That's the problem, Dean. I am not a solider." Holly stated firmly. It was a statement that she claimed constantly to Dean. Sometimes feeling like he doesn't listen to her or absorb what she is saying to him or he simply doesn't care what she thinks on the subject.
"Yes, you are." Dean said emphasizing the words strongly. "When you decided you wanted to join the fight, you became one. You may not be the typical solider, but you are one none the less. If you want to be in this life and survive you have to get off that stubborn attitude of yours and start following my orders. I know I'm probably not your favorite person in the world because I spank you, but it is not my goal to be liked." His words were firm and began to get harsher towards the end of his statement.
"Clearly." Holly grumbled under her breath, feeling her stubbornness and pride come to the surface. There was just something about obeying without question that she struggled with tremendously. She felt it took away part of her freedom somehow. Holly did trust Dean, perhaps not as much as she thinks she does, but she finds it hard to allow Dean to make decisions on everything. He knows a lot, but he does not know everything. He is also overly protective and Holly was not sure that he wouldn't make decisions that would put his life over hers. And that was a scary thought to Holly. Her life was not more important than his. No one's life is more important than another.
"What?" Dean graveled out not quite hearing Holly completely, but knew it wasn't in agreeance and it most definitely was not a yes, sir.
"I don't dislike you, Dean. And it's true I don't like being…spanked, but things don't have to be this way." Holly said trying to push through his one-track mind. Holly believed wholeheartedly that there were other ways and, in a way, she did feel sorry for Dean thinking there was only one avenue.
"Yes, it does. And since I've been doing this for longer then you have it is my responsibility to take the lead and make the decisions. I'm the man, you're the woman..."
Holly nearly jump out of her seat absolutely appalled at his blatant misogynist statement. A fire was building up in her chest that was ready to explode, but that fire quickly dissipated when Dean spoke.
"Sit. Down." Dean bit out with such a severe sternness that made her heart drop into her stomach and her ass drop back into the chair. "You will listen to what I have to say."
Holly swallowed at seeing his stiff green eyes glaring at her sternly. She felt a slight bit of embarrassment for literally jumping out of her seat without hearing the man out first, but still gave him a skeptical look. Dean let out a sigh releasing some hot air out before he spoke.
"Women can do the job just fine. I am not saying you can't do the job because you're a woman so don't fill yourself with piss and vinegar over that. It's inexperience that I have a problem with. But as a man, it is my job to protect you. I know you might not be used to being protected, but it's going to happen. So, you best start getting used to it because that's how it's going to be. I'll do whatever it takes to keep safe. You understand?" Dean asked looking deep into Holly's eyes intensely almost like he was trying to show her with his eyes just how serious her was. The passion in his statement was imposing and intense. Not something one would doubt the man's words and Holly certainly didn't.
Holly nodded blinking her browns at the Hunter. "Yes." She said simply.
Holly couldn't help but feel touched by Dean admitting his desire to protect her. It was a nice concept that she had little to no experience in, but despite that it was a nice feeling. An unfamiliar one, but nice. And it was somewhat unnerving knowing that someone has burdened themselves with such a job towards someone he had only met less than a year ago. It was such a powerful statement that it left Holly with a flood of emotions.
Satisfied Holly understood him, he continued. "As for the spankings, they are not child spankings. If I spanked you like I would a child, it would be ineffective. You receive an adult punishment."
Holly's mouth gapped a bit at Dean's logic.
"But spanking, itself, is a child's punishment. So, it all of a sudden becomes an adult punishment when you spank harder?" Holly asked with a raised eyebrow unconvinced by his reasoning.
Dean nodded his head to the side once. "Basically."
Holly groaned inwardly and made a dissatisfied face. "When did you decide that spanking was going to be the decided punishment? No one else does this." Holly stated not liking the unfamiliarity of Dean's idea of normal one bit.
"We're not like everyone else." He stated simply.
Holly sighed deeply shaking her head not quite believing what she was hearing. Holly found that excuse to be unbelievably annoying.
Dean leaned in towards Holly so that he would be more eye level with her. "Everyone else doesn't have to worry about life or death. Hunters are constantly put in danger and survival depends on the ability to follow plans laid out. When a mistake is made it's not just someone's car gets taken away or you have to pay a fine. It is life or death. And in order to stay alive you have to not only realize the mistake, but learn from it. Therefore, there has to be consequences. Spankings are quick, effective and leave an impression. It works and I do what works, so spankings are going to happen, sorry sweetheart, but that's the way it is."
Holly pushed her brows together having a look of disgruntlement on her face. "Well don't sugar coat anything, Dean." Holly's voice was laced with sarcasm. It seemed like he was laying things out for her in the most unpleasant view of their lives.
Dean nodded his head clicking his tongue. "It's a different world, sweetheart and it ain't no fairytale." He said in a matter of fact way, but there was a bit of sadness behind his voice that Holly did pick up on.
"No, it's not." Holly agreed sadly. Holly bit her lip in thought trying to absorb everything that Dean has told her.
Holly looked up at Dean blinking her brown eyes at him as she studied his face. "Just because I'm a woman you think you need to protect me and keep me safe and if I jeopardize that you spank me. Seems kind of domineering and extreme thinking to me, Dean." Holly explained stating what she was thinking about his thoughts on 'adult' spankings.
"It's survival, sweetheart. In a normal, comfortable, apple pie life where a man doesn't have to worry about his family being killed then, yeah, men can afford to be soft. I'll tell you one thing despite what you want to believe…I'm giving you a reality check. When it comes down to it and a man is faced with the realities of this life, he will do whatever it takes to keep women safe. Call it instinctual or a push back to primitive times, but that's this life and it is not normal and it is not catered to make us happy." Dean voice sounded hard when he spoke, almost cold.
Holly was practically speechless. Dean had never revealed so much of his mind to her ever. Holly couldn't help but think that Dean truly believed that he could not possibly be happy, not just about anything, but with anyone too. He was basically saying that Hunting brings men back to primitive instincts.
"I do not treat you like a child, Holly. I treat you like a Hunter. I treat you like a woman and I treat you like solider. I want to get this straight with you so listen to me carefully. I do not think little of you, I do not think you are weak or incapable. I don't spank you to degrade you, dominate you or demine you. I do it to correct and keep you safe nothing more. You got it?" He said every word looking directly into Holly's eyes not wavier his stare for even a second. His voice was deep and his tone was firm and serious.
"Yes, sir." Holly found herself saying. Holly was feeling an odd new found respect towards the Hunter. He was certainly not the simple goof ball his outer persona shows nor was he this stern robot. He was complex and rather selfless in a sad sort of way. Holly was beginning to slowly understand why Dean is so adamant about orders and consequences. He truly believed it was the most assured way to keep her safe. It was the way he was taught. It was the only way he knew. He saw her as a solider, but he also saw her as a woman and in his mind, he needs to take the lead and protect her which he not only saw as his responsibility, but part of his purpose as man. Dean was not a normal man and Holly had never met someone quite like him. It was scary to her, but also captivating in a way. She had never met someone so determined and relentlessly enthralled in being a protector. She was not used to being protected nor was she accustomed to following anyone's orders, but her own. It was definitely new to her. Although she understood Dean's way of thinking she found it hard to just accept this new way of life. There were limitations that Holly couldn't help but feel were too restrictive taking away things that made life enjoyable.
Dean nodded satisfied that Holly was understanding him.
"I'm sorry, Dean." Holly said sadly looking down at her lap. Dean scrunched his eyebrows together not quite sure why Holly was apologizing. "I'm sorry I make things difficult for you sometimes. I genuinely don't mean to. I'm just not really used to this way of thinking and I'm not exactly the obedient type..."
Dean gave her a small knowing smile. "I've noticed, but a spanking sure as hell gets you listening." His voice was smooth and deep. He said it with such confidence that it made Holly's chest tighten with anxiety.
Holly head snapped up towards him giving him a harsh glare. "It does not." She declared testily. "All it does it hurt my rear end." And my pride.
Dean's lip curled up to one side giving Holly a half smile. He knew Holly would never admit that spankings worked on her stubborn butt. "Alright, are we done with this deep sharing session?" Dean asked appearing to be done with the conversation and move onto more important things.
Holly rolled her eyes. Dean could be absolutely infuriating at times.
Once they were finished with the funnel cake, Dean finished chewing the last piece in his mouth leaning back in his chair brushing the powdered sugar off his fingers. Dean seemed to be casual about the whole thing almost like the conversation they had was not serious at all and he was looking out into the crowd when something caught his eye.
"Follow me." He said abruptly and got up out of his seat and started walking not bothering to turn around to wait for Holly. Holly was surprised by the sudden change and quickly grabbed the plate and throw it away into the nearest trash can and ran to catch up to Dean. Once she caught up to him, she realized the reason for his eagerness. Dean was standing in line to play a shooting game.
Holly raised an eyebrow at Dean. "You know these games are rigged, right?"
"Ah, this'll be a piece of cake. I'll win you that pink stuffed…uh…um…bunny?" Dean said questioning his ability to identify the stuffed animal.
"I think it's a dog." Holly stated judging by the way the tail looked. "You really don't have to, Dean." Holly said turning towards Dean. She really had no need for stuffed animal nor was she fond of the pink bunny/dog.
"What? Don't you have any confidence in me?" Dean asked sounding like his usual cocky self. It amazed Holly how Dean could go from being extremely serious and stern one minute to lighthearted and carefree the next like the conversation never happened. It was nice to see this side of him, but Holly feared that he often used it as just another way to shield himself from things he did not wish to talk about.
It took Dean five tries and forty-five dollars later till he finally won Holly the pink stuffed animal that Holly figured was worth no more than five dollars. The man handed over the prize and Dean snatched it out of the guys hands giving him an angered look knowing very well he just got cheated out of forty-five bucks. He turned towards Holly and handed her the pink bunny/dog.
Holly took the stuffed animal from Dean letting a small smile slip at seeing his face. It was clear he was not happy because he lost a lot of money, but mainly it was because the game made him look like a bad shot which he most certainly wasn't.
"Thanks." Holly said smiling. "I'll treasure it." Holly was teasing, but she also was feeling good in the fact that Dean went through that much effort just to get her the prize.
"You better. That little ball of fluff cost me 45 bucks. These people are freaking con-artists." Dean said shaking his head annoyed.
Holly was wanting to say I told you so, but decided not to. Afterall he went through all that trouble to win it for her and despite the stuffed animal being ugly and hard to identify, Holly was beginning to become very fond of it.

After walking around for a while, they did end up finding a few kids who they overheard talking about Jenny's disappearance. There were three young boys, who appeared to be about Jenny's age, standing around one of the food carts off to the side. Holly and Dean looked at each other then back at the kids. Without saying a word, they both walked towards them cautiously. Holly was the one who spoke first having an idea of what to say already in her head.
"Hey boys." She said calmly. All the boys' heads snapped up to look at Holly and Dean a bit startled at seeing the two adults approach them. "I couldn't help, but over hear you all talking about Jenny's disappearance. I'm detective Barton and this is my partner detective Greene. We work for the FBI and are investigating her disappearance. Do you mind if we ask you boys a couple of questions?" Holly asked holding up her fake badge for only a few seconds then putting it away.
The young middle school aged boys looked at each other appearing to be in shock and awe that FBI agents were wanting to talk to them. After exchanging stunned glances at each other they all nodded their heads.
"Sure." The blonde-haired boy said being the first to speak up.
"Did any of you know Jenny?" Dean asked looking at each one of the boys in the eyes keeping a serious tone to his voice.
The one appearing to be the oldest spoke up. "She rides the same bus with me." He said simply shrugging.
"Did you notice anything unusual before her disappearance? Was there anything about her behavior that was strange?" Dean asked hoping that they would remember anything useful.
"Well she hasn't been getting on the bus lately. Like all last week before she disappeared, she wasn't getting on the bus." The boy said sounding like it was unusual for Jenny to not to ride the bus home.
"Yeah I saw her sneak behind the buses and jump over the back fence. I thought she was just walking home." The blonde-haired boy chimed in.
"She probably went to see her friend, Yaga or something?" The third boy said shaking his head.
"Yaga?" Holly asked raising an eyebrow at the peculiar name.
"Yeah, she mentioned her old lady friend who she met in the woods. Honestly, it creeps me out." The third boy said making a face.
"It should. You kids stay out of the woods." Dean declared sternly looking at each boy making eye contact.
"You don't have to tell me, mister. I ain't going to."
"Yeah, me either."
"Not me."
It wasn't long till they figured out what was taking these kids. From the interviews and the digging into the towns history it was clear that they were dealing with a mythical creature called a Baba Yaga. It is described a witch in Slovic folklore as an ugly old woman who often prays on children who wonder into the woods.
Despite the witch being fairly easy to find. It was difficult to kill. There was not much written on how to destroy the creature, but there were many books that suggested that fire was the witch's enemy. After several attempts and many cuts and bruises later, they finally managed to burn the creature and her little hut down to ashes. The children that she kidnaped were returned to their families and Holly, Dean and Sam headed back to the hotel for some much-deserved rest.
The most incredible part about the hunt was that Holly followed all of Dean's orders and not once swayed to her own ideas. Although Dean was ecstatic about this fact, he wondered if what he said to her had anything to do with her compliance. It's not like she never followed his orders, she did, but it was unusual to not have at least one argument or backlash against his commands. Especially, when it comes to holding back in the moment which Holly almost always blocks Dean out at some point. However, this time was different, Holly held back and listened to Dean which gave him both peace of mind and bafflement. Holly was a mystery to Dean and it was clear that understanding this woman was far beyond his mental capacity. Yet, despite the confusion he was feeling, he couldn't help, but think about the carnival and how he enjoyed just being with her. However, this wonderful feeling did not come without the pain of knowing they could never be.
Holly was the first to shower, followed by Sam then Dean. After getting out of the shower Holly felt this overwhelming feeling of contentment wash over her. There was a lot to be thankful for tonight and she couldn't fight the urge to go outside. Holly quickly grabbed Dean's leather jacket off the bed and headed toward the door.
"I'm just going to get some fresh air." Holly announced to Sam.
"O-Okay." Sam said blinking in confusion as Holly was already out the door.
Once Dean emerged from the bathroom. He glanced around the room finding Holly nowhere to be seen in the small hotel room.
"Where's Holly?" Dean asked Sam quickly.
"Outside." Sam said simply shrugging.
Dean walked over and opened the hotel door finding Holly standing right outside. She was leaning against the rusty mental railing looking up at the stars. She was wearing Dean's leather jacket that nearly swallowed her small frame. At first glance it looked like that was all Holly was wearing since the jacket hung down lower than her boxer shorts. Her legs were bare to the cold night air, but it didn't seem to bother her in the least. Dean blinked at the outline of the woman before him and couldn't help, but feel a deep fondness rush to his heart.
Dean took a deep breath and walked over slowly to go stand by her side. She had a sweet content smile on her face as she blinked up at the night sky.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Holly exclaimed not taking her eyes off of the scenery. It was a beautiful clear night and the stars were bright and stunningly visible. Holly loved looking at stars. She had a great affection towards nature and the natural beauty in the world. It was an appreciation that she had ever since she was a little girl. God made a beautiful world and Holly never failed to notice.
Dean glanced up at the sky for a second, but quickly turned his head back to look at Holly. She had her hair down and a light breeze blew her brown locks away from her face revealing her delicate expression. There was a small bandage that held a cut together on the side of her forehead and a bruise on her chin that was just beginning to turn purple, but Dean hardly notice them at all. Her long eyelashes framed her brown eyes that blinked softly at the sky.
Beautiful. "Yeah." Dean whispered softly staring directly at Holly.
While Holly was wondering how God created something so beautiful like the night sky. Dean was wondering how God created something so beautiful as the woman he was staring at.
Dean seeming to snap himself back to reality immediately averted his eyes bringing himself back to his practical thoughts.
"We need to get you a jacket." Dean declared in low gravel tone. Holly had been putting off getting a warm jacket and Dean was silently putting that in his head as a priority as he saw goosebumps rise on her bare legs.
Holly turned to look at him wrapping Dean's jacket tightly around her body as she was beginning to feel the cold night air. "Yeah." She said biting her bottom lip. "Can't keep barrowing yours, I guess."
Dean nodded looking away from her licking his lip appearing almost shy, but keeping a stern composure just enough to keep Holly unsure. Dean saw her wearing his jacket as just another way he could protect her. He had every desire to protect this woman, even from the cold.
There was a small moment of silence until Dean decided to speak again.
"Thank you…" Dean began and Holly immediately pushed her brows together confused.
"Thank you for following my orders today." Dean clarified genuinely his eyes appearing grateful.
Holly smiled and let out a somewhat embarrassed giggle. "Yeah, that wasn't like me was it?" Then Holly turned towards Dean looking more serious. "But you're welcome."
"I better be careful not to be so compliant from now on or you might just die of shock." Holly teased showing him a mischievous smile.
Dean snorted. "If that's what I'll die from, I'll be one happy man."
Holly gave him a half smile and nodded. "Don't stay out here too much longer. It's getting cold." And with that he turned to go inside leaving Holly to enjoy the stars.
"I won't." Holly said as Dean disappeared back into the hotel.
Holly was happy. Dean and her did not fight, they saved children and killed a witch, they had a nice time at the carnival and she didn't do anything stupid to get her butt spanked. These days it seemed important to savoir these moments. It was a good day.
