"So we need to talk," Megan said.
"About what," Alyssa asked.
"Owen and Amelia," Megan said, "something isn't right."
"Lyss, you know her best," Teddy said.
"I don't know why he isn't with you," Alyssa said, "Amelia at least tries to have a relationship with me. She reaches out to me."
"She wasn't at your graduation," Evelyn said.
"I could only get three tickets," Alyssa said, "I asked Uncle Owen if she wanted to come and he told me to invite the people I wanted. So I chose Grandma, Uncle Owen and Auntie Teddy."
"Was it your choice," Megan asked.
"It was the three people who has supported me most," Alyssa replied, "the three people I wouldn't have made it through with out."
"Favourite of Owen's wives or finances," Megan asked.
"Christina," Alyssa said, "she could be fun. We would have dance parties in the kitchen when I was getting stressed with home work, she would make me stand up and we would dance it out to what ever song was on her ipod. I'd argue with my boyfriend or a friend and she would go you can't have tequila yet, so we're having ice cream."
"She had a soft spot for you," Teddy agreed, "didn't show it to many people but you got it and Meredith."
"My 21st birthday she sent me a bottle of tequila," Alyssa laughed, "it was good."
"Of course she did," Teddy laughed, "it was her drink of choice."
"Then I saw you a week later and we went for dinner and drinks," Alyssa said.
"I never miss your birthday," Teddy said, "tomorrow."
"Yes," Alyssa said, "Uncle Owen and I talked. We're having dinner here so everyone can be there."
"What are we having," Megan asked.
"Thai," Alyssa replied.
"Girls back on topic," Evelyn scolded.
"So something isn't right with Amelia," Megan said, "she doesn't like me."
"She doesn't like me either," Alyssa said.
"Or me," Teddy agreed.
"She was late to the wedding," Evelyn added.
"I forgot about that," Alyssa replied, "I was too busy bugging Nathan."
"Are you okay if him and I work things out," Megan asked.
"Yes," Alyssa said, "he's always kept in touch."
"Girls," Evelyn said.
"Auntie Teddy has been around more than Amelia," Alyssa said, "Amelia didn't listen when I thought I was having some sort of hallucination, stroke or psychotic break. She just brushed it off; she didn't even do an exam."
"When was the last time you talked to her," Evelyn asked.
"That night," Alyssa said.
"And you're staying at Owen's," Megan confirmed.
"I am and Auntie Teddy is at grandma's," Alyssa replied.
"Please you're there half the time," Teddy replied.
"I want time with you and grandma," Alyssa answered, "I sleep in my own bed."
"Because you are the worst bed hog ever," Teddy teased.
"She always was," Megan agreed, "sideways with feet in my side."
"What are we going to do," Teddy asked.
"Talk to him," Megan said.
"I'm staying out of it," Alyssa said, "because when I've made my suggestions before he ignored me."
"What did you suggest," Evelyn asked.
"After he divorced Christina I suggested he finally make it work with Auntie Teddy," Alyssa answered.
"Alyssa," Teddy sighed, "your uncle and I are not going to happen. He doesn't think of me that way. It would be like you and Steven come on, sweetheart. He's one of your best friends but you would never date him."
"But I've seen you two very close together on the couch," Alyssa said.
"Lyss not happening," Teddy argued, "he's my best friend and it's best for all of us including you if it stays that way."
Owen walked in and Alyssa took that as her cue to leave, she was having no part in this conversation about her Uncle's marriage.
"I'm going to get some work done and check in with my team," Alyssa said, "I want to apply what auntie Teddy and I were talking about but need a mouse to use Auto Desk."
"Auto Desk," Megan asked.
"3D Design software," Alyssa replied, "I love doing the design phase and working in CAD. CAD is computer assisted drafting. I really like drafting and the precision of it. I have my laptop and mouse as well as a drawing tablet at uncle Owen's."
"Stay," Megan asked, "work later?"
"Mom I have a dead line," Alyssa argued.
"Lyss," Evelyn said, "your mom will end up napping soon go then."
"I want no part in ambushing Uncle Owen," Alyssa snapped, "it feels disloyal."
"Okay," Megan said, "but you agree she's not around."
"She's a surgeon," Alyssa shrugged.
Owen walked into the room.
"Sit down Owen," Evelyn commanded, she noticed Alyssa slipping out and understood the girl not being willing to be part of this. It was a lot to ask her to do and her loyalty to Owen the person who had taken her in and raised her as his own when she was essentially and orphan was unwavering. She knew Uncle Owen was the closest thing she had to a dad and she would not be part of ambushing him.
"Lyss," Megan asked, calling her by her preferred nickname for the first time.
"I'm going to call work," Alyssa said, "I won't leave the hospital."
"What's going on," Owen asked as Alyssa left.
"Sit down," Megan commanded, "we need to talk to you."
"What about," Owen asked, "I thought we were good on the Alyssa thing."
"She's great," Megan said, "this is about your sham of a marriage."
"What," Owen asked.
"Sit," Evelyn commanded.
Owen sat.
"Where's Amelia," Teddy asked.
"Where's your wife Owen," Megan pushed.
"Working," Owen replied.
"She's completely absent," Megan said, "I've met her once. Alyssa says she hasn't seen her at the house."
"She wanted to give us space," Owen said.
"That's all she gives you," Megan ranted.
"Your family is here," Evelyn said, "is she family or is she not."
"I don't need her here," Owen said.
"And you don't see what's wrong with that," Megan asked.
"Teddy can you help me out," Owen asked.
"I'm with them," TEddy said, "she's not here."
"You married a dying paitent," Owen barked.
"And fell in love with him," Teddy said, "you liked him so much that you let Lyss hang out with Henry without us around. You never gave Nathan that trust"
Megan switched her tactic, "Owen if I don't make it out of this promise me you will get Faroke, move where ever you have to, do anything you have to."
"Of course," Owen said.
"Owen I need to know if I don't survive this that you have my kids," Megan pleaded, "you and my kids are the most important people to me on this planet. Owen I need to know you have them."
"I do," Owen said, "I will do anything for them. Megan, I have them. I've always had Alyssa."
"I have to know you have Faroke too," Megan pushed.
"Damm it," Owen growled.
"What," Megan asked.
"You just made it really hard to walk out," Owen snapped.
"That was the whole plan," Megan laughed, "and I know you have them because Alyssa is better than anything I imagined. That Teddy was so involved was unexpected but is very much appreciated. She still likes you more than me."
"Alyssa is very relational," Teddy said, "she's guarded and it's her PTSD. She's triggered. I know she's having phone sessions with her counsellor. She's coming out of her shell."
"But how did you," Megan asked.
"At first it was for you then I fell in love with her," Teddy said, "she was a lost kid, she needed a mentor. I thought I could mentor her a bit then she started coming to me more and more. It was mutual."
Meredith dashed onto the room, "Megan we have a match."
Teddy lept off the foot of the bed and dashed to the change room.
"I need to see Alyssa," Megan said, "fast. I want the flesh fresh when you sew it on me."
Owen called Alyssa who met him in the hall and followed him to pre op.
"Ladybug I love you," Megan said hugging Alyssa, "I'll see you after. If anything happens you stay close to Uncle Owen and Teddy. And get your brother."
"Mommy," Alyssa whispered.
"Alyssa promise me," Megan said, "that you will get your brother."
"I will," Alyssa promised.
"I love you so much ladybug and I'm so proud of you," Megan whispered in her daughter's ear.
"I love you mommy," Alyssa whispered, "don't leave me again."
"I'll see you in a few hours," Megan said.
"Promise," Alyssa asked looking and sounding like the little girl Megan had left behind.
"I promise Ladybug," Megan assured.
"Grey and I have this," Teddy assured, "Alyssa you'll see your mom in a few hours. Go wait with Owen and Grandma."
"Promise," Alyssa said.
"I promise," Teddy assured.
"Lyss hug and we have to go," Owen prompted.
Alyssa and Owen gave Megan a final hug before Owen led Alyssa away.
"Go see grandma," Owen said, sending Alyssa to the waiting room.
Alyssa found Evelyn and sat beside her grandma with tears streaming down her cheeks.
"It's okay baby," Evelyn soothed.
"I can't lose mom again I'm just getting to know her," Alyssa whimpered.
"A few hours and you can sit with her," Evelyn promised.
Owen found Ameila in her lab.
"How's Megan," Amelia asked.
"She's going into surgery," Owen said, "we need to talk."
"About," Amelia asked.
"Us," Owen said, "you're not here. My family is noticing, the people who love me don't see you don't see us."
"So," Amelia asked.
"I know you go to meetings and it seems to help," Owen said, "but maybe you're not over losing Derek, maybe you have some PTSD from that. I'm not psych, I dont know. Maybe therapy would help or medication?"
"So your daughter slash niece doesn't trust me and I need therapy," Amelia ranted, "your sister doesn't like me and I need help. Your mother who is with a man half her age doesn't understand me so I need medication."
Owen went to speak.
"Your friend who is clearly in love with you," Amelia ranted, "the one who you trusted to help raise your niece over your first wife."
"That was Alyssa who sought out Teddy," Owen said.
"She's in love with you," Amelia shouted, "if you love her as much as she clearly loves and wants you go be with her. Go be with Teddy and have your perfect life together. Your niece would love that, so would your mom and sister. They clearly like her more than me"
"Amelia," Owen said.
"Out," Amelia ordered.
Owen left the lab and found his family in the waiting area.
Alyssa paced by the window arguing with someone on the phone, Owen put his hand on her shoulder and she shrugged him off. Evelyn shook her head.
Hours later Teddy and Merideth come to find them.
"Is mom," Alyssa asked.
"She's great," Teddy smiled.
"It was a success," Meredith assured, "you can come see her."
"Mom's alive," Alyssa repeated.
"Better than okay," Meredith said, "Lyss we fixed it."
"Grey," Owen asked.
"She's stable, the transplant went perfectly," Meredith assured, "Owen we did it. She's going to heal."
"Why are you crying," Teddy asked Alyssa.
"Mom's okay," Alyssa said, "it's happy tears."
"She's going to heal and be just fine," Meredith assured, having heard the younger woman's story years before from Christina.
"She's going to be okay and stay," Alyssa asked.
"Yes," Owen assured, "come on kiddo let's go see her."
