"Nagisa, shh, everything will be okay; you don't have to cry. Don't be scared; I'm here, and I'll always be here."
"Mu...mmy."
As she called out to her mother, a single tear came dripping down slowly. Despite how her parents treated her, she still wants to be acknowledged and loved by them, she may be a useless waste of space to them, but to her, as they were her parents, she could care less about what they think of her, is what I was thinking of. I held onto her hand and gently gave it light strokes as she slept.
"I love you...mummy, daddy."
She...still loves them? Does she love them? Did she know the feeling of love?
"I'm sorry I wasn't an alpha."
Was being an alpha so vital to them that they pushed their daughter over the edge? As I watched her sleep, I heard Chuutaro bark as though calling out for me, so I got up to check and found my grandmother tending to the plants in the garden. The sun had yet to rise, and yet she has risen. Honestly, she should rest more.
"Grandmother, what are you doing up so early?"
"Ara, ara, Honoka, good morning."
"Yes, good morning, grandmother."
"I was just thinking since it snowed last night, most of the plants would not be able to survive unless I shake the snow off."
"Grandmother, there is something I must ask for your advice."
"Come, child, let us head to the dining room."
I helped her slowly stand up, and we walked into the dining room. Little did I know that Chuutaro had sneaked into my room and was right next to Nagisa. When we arrived at the dining room, my grandmother sat down, and I followed suit.
"Now, what is it that you want to talk to me about, other than the omega you are hiding in your room."
"You knew?"
"Of course, I knew, my granddaughter."
She chuckles and gives me a warm smile.
"Well, it regards the omega. Her family is abusing her, and she is forced to sleep out in the cold. Had I not found her last night, she might be dead right now."
"Abuse? That poor girl..."
"I must ask, but why are people still caught in the web that having an alpha is better than an omega, or at least a beta is better than an omega?"
"In the past, the alpha was the family's breadwinner; they are born strong and smart. An omega's ability was limited, they weren't strong, and they weren't instrumental. Other than the fact that they had a high fertility rate, they were still only used for breeding."
"But now omegas are working in society, and most of them have high positions. Even the first woman who stepped onto the moon was an omega (Fake)."
"That is true, but it is also because of one's education."
"I understand, bu-"
"AHHHHH!"
The moment I heard the scream, I got up and rushed to my room, and I found Chuutaro sniffing Nagisa. Nagisa was frozen solid as Chuutaro was getting closer to her.
"Chuutaro, come here."
Immediately Chuutaro rushed to my side and sat down near my leg. Nagisa was still shivering out of fear.
"Nagisa, love, it's okay, it's just Chuutaro."
"Chuu...taro?"
"Yes, he my pet dog?"
"A pet? Then what does that make me?"
"What do you mean?"
"It's just that mother always says I'm lower than a bug, so if you have a pet, does that mean I'm just a toy?"
"NO!"
She flinched and began to move away from me as she watches me with fear in her eyes, as though anything she says or does next would be punished.
"I'm-I'm-I'm-sor...ry...I won't s-say a-anything a-any-more..."
She begins to cry and she covers her head to protect herself.
"N-Nagisa, I'm so sorry...I never meant to shout at you."
"I-I...didn't mean to make alpha angry...I'm sorry...I'm sorry..."
"Nagisa, it's not your fault."
As I took a step toward her she flinched and cowered backward and when she fell off the bed, I saw her wince but instead of saying anything she got up and ran to the corner of my room. Was she thinking that I was holding a weapon? My words...they were a weapon to her. I decided to sit down right where I was to show Nagisa that I wasn't a threat to her.
She looks at me and I gave her a warm smile. She slowly crawls toward me but she stays at least three feet away from me.
"I'm sorry Nagisa, I never meant to shout at you, I just meant that you are not a toy, you are you, you are simply Nagisa."
I said in a soft tone. She rubs her arm before she looks back at me as though wondering if coming close to me would get punished.
"Come here."
She slowly crawls toward me as cautiously as she could.
"C-Can I g-get a-"
"Honoka, I'm coming in!"
We heard my grandmother say and Nagisa hurriedly return to the corner of the room.
"Grandmother, this is Nagisa, she is the omega, I was telling you about."
G: "Hello there, Nagisa."
Nagisa looks at my grandmother but was afraid of getting too close, however my grandmother had a certain warmth to her voice. I'm sure Nagisa was beginning to doubt her thoughts on whether my grandmother was a bad person.
G: "Come here, child. I won't hurt you. I'll even give you some candy."
N: "Can...dy? What's that?"
G: "It's sweet."
N: "Sweet?"
"Grandmother, Nagisa has never been given any of those before."
G: "Oh my, well here you go."
Grandmother walks closer to her and places the candy on the floor before she moved back to my side, Nagisa had simply shrunk closer to the wall with every step grandmother took. Nagisa looks at me and I nod my head, she swiftly grabs the candy and tried to open it. Grandmother took a seat beside me and patted me on my back as a signal to help Nagisa.
I got up and move closer to Nagisa and the moment she saw my footwear, she stiffened and begin to tremble.
N: "I'm sorry! Don't hit me! Please!"
She looked as though she was ready to vomit out of anxiety.
"I'll simply open the wrap for you, is that alright?"
I bent down to meet her eyes, she says nothing and nods her before she gave me the candy and I slowly open the wrapper and place it in her palm.
"You can eat it."
N: "I can?"
"Yes, I'm sure you will enjoy the taste."
Nagisa plops the candy in her mouth she lets out a wide smile. I smile at the happy look she had on her face.
"Nagisa, you should say thank you to grandmother for giving you the candy."
N: "Ah. Thank you miss alpha."
I was surprised by what Nagisa had called my grandmother, was Nagisa extremely sensitive to scents that just by a faint smell she was able to the diversity of one.
G: "What have they done to you? You poor child."
N: "Can I get another?"
"Only once a day, too much and it wouldn't be good for you."
N: "Then what about a rolled egg?"
She must have remembered the egg best because it was the first nice edible thing she ate.
"Do you want some? We can make some."
G: "I'll go and prepare the ingredients."
N: "No! It's okay. I can wait until nighttime. I was just curious. I shouldn't make trouble for you."
G: "It's not a trouble dear, and t's time for breakfast since Honoka decided to skip school, I'm sure she doesn't mind making us breakfast."
"I'll head over to the kitchen."
I got up and walk out of the room, taking the eggs out of the fridge and preparing the necessary items that were needed. I was sure that leaving Nagisa with my grandmother was going to be fine.
Third Person View (Honoka's room)
G: "Nagisa?"
N: "Yes?"
G: "What has your family been feeding you? How many times a day?"
N: "Urm...Well...Urm... mother feeds me moldy bread about once a day or sometimes once every few days."
G: "What would you do when you were extremely hungry?"
N: "I drank water...from...the...bucket of the shower I was given. Or I when I was kicked out I dig through the bin to find food."
G: "Then who let you taste rolled eggs."
N: "Yukishiro-san!"
G: "Was it nice?"
N: "It was...May I know why you ask me these questions?"
G: "I'm just trying to get to know you."
N: "I...understand."
H: "Grandmother. I've finished cooking let's head to the dining room to eat."
N: "Can't I just eat alone?"
G: "Come and sit with us at the table, this big old house only has me and Honoka but now you are part of the family."
Nagisa rubbed her left arm as she stayed in her spot. The alpha's words were extremely convincing however she rather not make trouble for these kind-hearted and loving family people. They were all alphas, an omega like her had no place with them. She was never allowed into the dining room when she was born up till now. She wanted to see what a normal dining room would look like.
N: "Is the dining room big?"
H: "It's bigger than a normal house."
N: "If I was a child would I have been able to roll around?"
H: "You can even do it now."
N: "No urm...I was just curious."
G: "Why?"
N: "I've never seen a dining room. And urm... even if I were to eat with you, I don't know how to use any of the utensils."
H: "You can learn."
N: "I'll eat somewhere else. And urm...I think it's time for me to go..."
G: "Go where?"
N: "Anywhere except for home and here. I'm intruding on your family time."
With that said she dash out of the room and Honoka tried to chase after her. Honestly, one never thought that for a girl so malnourish she was an extremely fast runner. By the time Honoka reach the door, Nagisa was already gone. Honoka then turn and left to the kitchen. When she returned to the kitchen she noticed one of the rolled eggs was slightly shorter than the others.
She must have torn a small piece off before running out, despite being hungry she didn't just take the whole piece, she chose to starve. I remember how Nagisa has still dressed in one of my old pajamas as. The worse part was that it had just begun to snow heavily. I wanted to go out of the house and look for her but the phone suddenly rang and I rush to answer it. Since there was no way I could find her in the huge snowstorm.
Nagisa's POV
I tore a small piece of egg and ran out of the house, hoping that Yukishiro-san wouldn't look for me. I notice the snow around me had begun to fall even harder, and I was still wearing thin clothes from Yukishiro-san. Soon, I stopped near an alley and sat there even as the snow fell, I opened my palm to see the stolen piece of egg scrap. I popped the piece of egg into my mouth and as I chewed I savored the taste.
Today was my only chance to 'be free'? I couldn't understand what it meant to be free. I sat among the colored white snow, thinking about Yukishiro-san's family. She was a born alpha, her parents love her, her grandmother loves her, and even her pet loves her. Even when compared to my family, I felt sorry for her because her soulmate was an omega. An abused omega whose parents wished they never gave birth to her.
Just as I lifted my head, I saw mother with Ryouta, holding hands as Ryouta was having some steaming sweet potato, I wanted them to notice I was there but mother would have punished me for showing up when my punishment wasn't over. Ryouta looked so happy...if only I was an alpha...would she have loved me the same? I watch as they walk away and headed home, I notice how mother's eyes suddenly landed on me and I begin to tremor.
She saw me! Mother saw me! It wasn't a good idea to stay in the same spot but I did so. Soon enough mother turned up with hands crossed and face filled with anger, even her scent told me she was angry. I whimper quietly and looked at her feet.
"What are you doing here!" She shouts at me questioning.
"I-I-I was looking for shelter a-and I co-couldn't find any s-so I sat i-i-in t-the s-snow," I answered.
My punishment was extended.
"Don't come home for the rest of the month and you don't have to school either, because the money for your education could help Ryouta in the future. And stay away from Ryouta, have you any idea what would happen if he had seen you?"
With that said she turned and left.
"W-wait mother?! Please! Forgive me! I know I wasn't supposed to come b-but it's cold and I'm hungry. And I don't wish to drop out of school."
I was on my knees begging for forgiveness. As cold as it was, I was hoping she would at least forgive me.
"Shut up! If you were born an alpha, your education might have been worth it but you were a useless omega. And for grabbing me, you can don't come home for the rest of winter until the new year is over."
This time she kicked me and left, when she kicked me I heard a loud crack from my shoulder. What should I do now? Going back home wasn't an option and neither is being a burden to Yukishiro-san. I got up and held my arm that was in pain and held back my tears. I walk down the empty street as far away from home as possible. I look around my surroundings looking for a shelter, I didn't want to bother anyone about my problems.
"NA...GI...SA!"
I look around as I heard someone shouting my name. I thought maybe I was hallucinating from hunger, my eyelids felt like they were closing, and it felt heavy to keep them open. I remember that as a pup when Ryouta was still a pup, and he had caught a cold, our parents had showered him with worry. I thought that if I had also fallen sick, they would do the same.
But instead when the school had called my parents telling them I had a high fever, they never even bothered to ask to know how I was feeling, they just told the teacher that if it wasn't about Ryouta, they shouldn't be disturbed. I had to walk home in the snow with a high fever that day. The lesson that day was there was no use in asking for love, they don't love me.
Now I sat in the snow hoping for someone to just love me. As my eyes were completely blurred by the heavy snow, I saw a figure running towards me with the beautiful blue hair tied up in a ponytail swinging about. I kept hearing my name being called, it must be the reaper who has come to collect my soul.
"NAGISA!"
Was the last thing I heard before I had completely blacked out.
Honoka's POV
I ran towards the figure sitting in the snow hoping, praying for it to be Nagisa. I should have never picked up the phone call, it wasted so much of my time that it had begun to snow even heavier. What kind of fool would decide to pick up a phone call despite the fact their mate only wearing PJs had run into the heavy snow? I stopped right in front of my omega sitting among the snow.
I quickly pick her up and tried to rush home as quickly as possible, even without the heavy snowstorm it would be impossible to bring her to the hospital for help, I had asked my grandmother to draw a warm bath before rushing out. I was in my bedroom thinking about why Nagisa's family was so cruel were so cruel to her and mostly why can't give Nagisa everything she needed, all that she ever wanted is some love from them.
A couple of minutes or hours later, Nagisa had woken up and felt warm and a sense of familiarity with the bed and she immediately noticed whose bed it had belonged. Nagisa began to panic a bit feeling really bad that she shouldn't be where she was.
"I-I shouldn't be here. I was supposed to be in the snow! I'm not supposed to be here!"
"Nagisa! Look at me."
I said right into her face as I grab the side of her arms. She turns towards me, afraid and on the verge of breaking down.
"I-I-I'm sorry for running and stealing. I'm s-sorry for running and stealing..."
She repeats the words like a mantra. She bows down as her head touches the bed, she does the same action over and over again.
"Nagisa, shush, it's going to be alright. I'm not going to scold you, you already know what you did wrong. But do you know how worried I was? Do you know if you stayed in the snow you would have died?"
"I tried to build a small house. I th-thought if I ca-came back you would just throw me out. Mother kicked me because I went back before the given date, she said I wasn't allowed to go to sch-school anymore. I'm a useless omega. WAAAAHHHHH!"
As Nagisa explained her tears begin to flow down her eyes to the point she just cried out loud. This was the first time I had seen the omega cry out loud, the past few days of getting to know her were simply seeing her keeping a mask on her face to please her parents. Her face of gratification, her face of happiness, and her face of sadness. I saw them all for the first time just by interacting with her.
"I promise, you can go back to school soon. So don't cry anymore."
I said gently as I hugged her and gave her a few pats on the back.
"But you need my parents' signature."
"I'll talk to them about it so stop your tears."
Suddenly, as I was wiping Nagisa's tears, her stomach let out a loud growl.
"Fufu, let's eat now, alright?"
She shook her head and held onto her stomach.
"I ate already."
"Nagisa, eating a small piece of roll egg does not refer to having eaten anything at all."
"B-But usually I am only allowed a small piece of the food."
"Forget whatever they taught you, from now on I'm the only person you will listen to. Don't listen to the bad things, just listen to my voice and all the good thing in the world."
I picked her up and gave her some warm clothes as I wrapped the scarf I had lent her the first time around her neck and she holds onto it. I smiled and told her a special secret.
"Nagisa, did you know that this scarf was something I had hand weaved for my mate when I was a child."
"Hand weave?"
"Hand-made, it's yours now since you are my mate."
"Does that mean I can keep it? You won't take it from me, no matter what?"
"I promise you, I'll never take it from you no matter what. Pinky promise."
"Pinky promise. Hehe, I'm so happy."
I smiled and carried her to the dining room.
No one's POV
As Nagisa was carried into the dining room by Honoka, Honoka's grandmother look at them with happiness, in her eyes, Nagisa was a baby rather than a 13-year-old girl and Honoka was her mother. She notices the white scarf around Nagisa's neck and she smiles, knowing that Nagisa was a claimed omega.
G: "Ara, Ara, Nagisa, what a cute scarf."
The old lady says with a warm smile on her face. Nagisa blushes at her words and Honoka simply giggles. Honoka then set Nagisa down on the chair and sat beside her. Honoka handed Nagisa a pair of chopsticks and Nagisa not understanding how to use them grab them like a baby.
G: "Nagisa? Do you not know how to hold chopsticks?" Honoka's grandmother asked.
Nagisa shook her head before looking at the chopsticks and trying to hold them right.
N: "I wasn't allowed to use utensils since I was given bread only and no one ever fed me even when I was a baby. I ate things like rice, chicken, or egg before I met Yukishiro-san."
G: "Why don't you call Honoka by her given name?"
N: "Be-Because I'm not allowed. I hardly call anyone by their given name unless allowed. I can't call my parents anything less than my mother or father. Because I'm an omega."
H: "Nagisa, you can call me by my name from now on."
N: "Really? Am I truly allowed? I thought no alpha would allow an omega like me. I thought it was rude of us to do so."
G: "You can just call me grandmother from now."
N: "I can? I was never allowed to see my grandmothers because they despised me for being an omega. They were also alphas, even grandfathers."
Before Nagisa could say any more, Honoka picked up the rolled egg and gently showed Nagisa how chopsticks were meant to be held.
H; "Nagisa have you ever used crayons?"
N: "Crayons? What are those?"
G: "They are similar to colored pencils."
N: "You have colored pencils? Can I see? I've never seen colored pencils from up close."
H: "What do you mean you saw them up close?"
N: "I didn't attend elementary school until the year of the middle school entrance exam. And even in middle school, I was only allowed a tiny pencil which Ryouta used till there was almost nothing left. I've seen Ryouta use them from far, but whenever I try to get closer to see them, I would be punished so I never see them or touch them."
G: "What else have you not seen or experienced?"
N: "I have never been to the park with my parents or slept with them. Um...they never read me a bedtime story. I have never eaten warm food until now, I don't have any clothes other than my school uniform. And...and I want to sit on a Ferris wheel or a roller coaster."
H: We can get you some clothes on the way." the Old lady jumped in and said.
N: "No need, no need. I don't need new clothes. I can just earn it, I can just go and find a job to pay for them."
G: "Nagisa?"
N: "Yes, grandmother?"
G: "Are you cold?"
N: "Cold? No-oo."
H: "Be honest, no one likes a liar."
N: "B-But...Yes, I'm cold but you don't have to buy anything. I have a few yens in my pocket."
H: "Few as in at least 100yen?"
"N-no, I'm not that rich. I only have about, maybe, probably about seven yen."
G: "How did you collect them?"
N: "I would go to the vending machine and collect them underneath the machine, sometimes I would be lucky and find some on the street. I had once collected at least fifty yen but Fujimura-Sama had taken all of them to pay for his drink."
H: "I'm going to kill that ridiculous idiot."
N: "Every time I collected enough to buy a drink or even food, he would take and spent them right in front of me, and if I hid them at home Ryouta would just find them and use the money."
G: "Why were you collecting all your money?"
N: "I wanted to buy a sweater for a child. But before I got the chance all my money would be taken, But a sweater alone cost at least a few thousand yen but I couldn't choose. I would do my best and collect. Sometimes I'd pick up trash and recycle them to exchange for money."
Honoka and her grandmother just stayed quiet as they continued talking.
N: "I would be so happy if I could exchange up to at least a hundred yen coin. But it never made it until a hundred yen, putting that aside I can buy my things. The first time I experience valentines was when I saw students putting chocolate in your locker for you. I wanted to try one so I had once stolen one from someone but I got beat up before I could even try it."
H: "We can make some later."
N: "No need. It's a personal want, I don't deserve it."
G: "Nagisa was there a design on the sweater?"
N: "Design?"
She tilts her head to the side.
G: "I see, okay, quickly finish your food."
Nagisa smiles and tried to eat the rolled egg with the chopsticks before Honoka gave her a set of utensils meant for children.
Honoka's POV
By the time we finished, Nagisa was getting the hang of using a child's utensils.
"Honoka, get Nagisa dressed up to head out."
"Ok."
After replying I pick Nagisa up and carried her to my room and took out some old winter clothes for Nagisa. Once she was wrapped up, I gave her a jacket that was mine when I was around the age of 9 maybe 10.
