A month later Owen met Teddy at the airport.
"Teddy," Owen beamed, pulling her into his arms.
"Hi," she whispered.
"You're here," he smiled.
"I'm here," she agreed, "we're here."
"So we'll go home," he asked.
"Owen, I told you," she said.
"I know," he answered, "I have the basement guest room and bathroom set up for you. I don't want you in a hotel and you want your space and time. Can we be roommates?"
"We can be," she agreed, she thought she could do that. It would be better than a hotel and she did want to be with him and near him. But she couldn't tell if it was her hormones in control.
"Teddy," Owen asked.
"Tired and need a second," Teddy replied, "that's an 11 hour flight and I didn't really sleep."
"Do you want to go home and get some rest," Owen asked.
"I need a job, I have to find a car," Teddy replied, "there's too much to do."
"First you rest," he suggested, "we'll go home. You can shower and nap and I'll make you something to eat."
"What about Leo," Teddy asked, she had seen the baby boy on facetime and was excited to actually meet him.
"He was going to spend the night with my mom so you can settle in," Owen replied.
"And what are we doing about our baby, your mom, Alyssa, Megan," Teddy asked, "Leo should be home in his own bed."
"We tell them all in person," Owen replied.
"So Megan is when," Teddy asked.
"Christmas," Owen replied, "Lyss was down last weekend so we have a couple weeks. She'll be okay. She loves Leo and Faroke. She's happy to have siblings and cousins. Finally as she put it. Teddy let's go home we can talk in the car."
She nodded and he grabbed her bags.
"You have more than this," he asked.
"Being shipped," she replied, "but I'm selling the furniture with my apartment. I shipped the things I like and are special to me. Some is sentimental but I want it here."
"Like what," Owen asked.
"The pink blanket," she replied, "the old picnic blanket we used here that I took to Germany to remind me of Seattle. I have this little clay guinea pig Alyssa made me in eighth grade art, she painted it to look like Hershey."
"You kept it," Owen asked.
"I did," Teddy smiled, "it was the first art piece a kid made me. You didn't notice it on my dresser? It's how I took my guinea pig to Germany."
"We tell my mom, then Lyss then Meg," Owen said.
"Can we go see her," Teddy asked, "your mom?"
"We can go see her and get Leo," Owen replied, "Leo what do you want to do?"
"He's going to be our baby's brother," Teddy replied, "I want to get to know him and be with him. I don't know what to do with babies but I'll figure it out."
"We can go get him," Owen agreed.
Owen drove to Evelyn's and let himself and Teddy into the house, "Mom? Leo?"
"Hi," Evelyn said, "your mystery errand is over? You said it would take all night."
"Hi," Teddy called.
"Teddy," Evelyn asked.
"Evelyn," Teddy smiled.
"What," Evelyn started.
"We have a lot to tell you," Owen said, "but first Teddy this is Leo. Leo, can you say hi to Teddy?"
"Hi little man," Teddy smiled at the baby, "may I?"
"Go meet Auntie Teddy," Evelyn said, passing Teddy the baby.
"Auntie Teddy," Teddy asked.
"You're Auntie Teddy to Alyssa and Faroke," Evelyn said, "so I thought you would want to be auntie to Owen's son."
"I do," Teddy beamed at the little boy in her arms, "Leo I'm Auntie Teddy."
Leo waved his hands in Teddy's face.
"Are you saying hi," Teddy smiled, "hello, hello."
"Mom, we have some good news," Owen said.
"Do you want something to eat then tell me," Evelyn offered.
"We'll go home," Owen said, "we came straight from SEATAC."
"Any stops for plane museums and plane spotting today," Evelyn asked.
"No," Owen replied, "I'm still shocked she didn't go into aeronautics."
"We all were," Evelyn replied.
"Her and I talked it through," Teddy replied, "she was really torn between medical and aeronautics. Then she had that project that they took to conferences. I saw her presenting in Washington DC at a conference and seeing her present was incredible. I took her for dinner that night and we really talked. No friends, no other relatives, I got her alone. Medical was partly a way to connect to Megan. For her it was honouring her mom."
"I hadn't thought of that," Evelyn said, "but your good news?"
"Two things," Owen said.
"I'm 10 weeks pregant," Teddy said, "and the baby is Owen's."
"What," Evelyn asked.
"You're getting another grandchild," Owen said.
"You two," Evelyn asked.
"Ours," Owen agreed, putting his arm around Teddy's waist, startling her.
"Teddy," Owen asked.
"I wasn't expecting that," Teddy replied.
"Are you together," Evelyn asked.
"We're working all of that out," Teddy answered for both of them.
"Okay," Evelyn agreed, "what is the plan?"
"Teddy is going to stay in the downstairs guest room," Owen replied, "we're going to date and be roommates. We know we can co-parent."
"Leo," Evelyn asked.
"They're siblings," Teddy said, "they will grow up together. We have a few months to figure it out."
"Are you okay," Evelyn asked.
"Making another transcontinental move at the drop of a hat," Teddy replied, "but I have to. It's a homecoming. Our baby needs both parents."
"Have you two discussed your oldest," Evelyn asked, "you've always called Lyss yours. You have to tell her."
"Not fully," Owen said, "getting Teddy here has been the first priority."
"You two need to tell her," Evelyn said, "Alyssa has had a few shake ups this year. Soon."
"We will tell her face to face," Teddy assured, "we know how she works."
"But a baby," Evelyn said, "due date?"
"April 7th," Teddy replied.
"And you're feeling okay," Evelyn asked, "not too sick?"
"It's been rough," Teddy admitted, "but I can do it. I never thought I would be a mom. I seriously thought Lyss was as close as I was ever going to get."
"She loves Leo and Faroke," Owen said.
"We're banking on her being 24 and having her own life," Teddy replied, "it's a cousin not a brother."
Leo, who had been happily in Teddy's arms, began to fuss and squirm.
"Hey buddy," Owen smiled, taking his son, "did you have a good cuddle with Auntie Teddy."
"He's very sweet," Teddy smiled.
"We're going to go home and auntie Teddy is coming with us," Owen told Leo, "and we'll have dinner, and a bath and your story."
"Do I get to read his story," Teddy asked.
"You can," Owen agreed, "but do you want to relax."
"Teddy, you have to take care of yourself," Evelyn said.
"I am," Teddy replied, "I've always dreamed of story time. My mom used to read to me every night."
"Mom thanks for watching Leo," Owen said, "we should go. I think Teddy is exhausted."
"Go rest and I'll see both of you soon," Evelyn said, "Teddy let's do lunch in the next few days."
"We will," Teddy agreed, "I'll call you when I have a few things settled."
"Teddy let us help you," Evelyn said, "I want to be involved. Have you had any scans yet?"
"I have," Teddy replied, "two weeks ago and we go for one in 2 weeks. We'll show you pictures after that. I want Owen to come to the next one with me and see them, hear their heartbeat first. I have but he hasn't."
"Mom, don't tell Meg or Lyss yet," Owen said, "we want to get to 12 weeks and then tell them in person."
"I won't," Evelyn agreed.
Megan sat on their deck looking out at the waves while Faroke and Nathan threw a baseball on the beach. She jumped when her phone buzzed on the arm of the chair.
"Alyssa," Megan greeted.
"Hi mom," Alyssa smiled.
"What's going on ladybug," Megan asked.
"My office is closing for four days the weekend of October 7-10 for Canadian Thanksgiving," Alyssa said, "are you off those days?"
"Let me check the calendar," Megan said, "I just have to go inside and look at my ipad."
"I want to see you," Alyssa said, "before thanksgiving."
"I know," Megan said, "this is harder for me than being held. Knowing I can go to you and you can come to me but time is not working."
"We're texting every day." Alyssa said.
"But I want to see you," Megan said.
"I have a long weekend," Alyssa said, "if you're off I'll fly down."
Megan looked at the schedule, "I work 6am-8pm Saturday and Sunday."
"So thanksgiving," Alyssa said.
"What will you do," Megan asked.
"There's a Jarrett dinner on Monday and I'll go see uncle Owen and grandma," Alyssa said, "I'm coming down to see you."
"I'll see what I can do," Megan replied.
"It's okay," Alyssa said, "the army doesn't change schedules because your daughter wants to visit at the last minute. You're coming to grandmas for thanksgiving?"
"We are," Megan assured.
"That's six weeks later we can do it," Alyssa said.
"Your day was good though," Megan asked.
"Ya," Alyssa replied, "Auntie Teddy isn't texting me back and it's usually a good time for her."
"I don't know she's probably in the OR " Megan replied, "she sent something for Faroke and signed it from auntie Teddy."
"I made the decision for him," Alyssa smiled.
"I get why you did," Megan said, "maybe I can answer your question."
"I'll wait for her, it's about Matt," Alyssa replied.
"I can," Megan offered.
"I've been talking to Auntie Teddy," Alyssa replied, "it's okay."
"Lyss I want to know," Megan said.
"It's a conversation I've only ever felt okay having with Auntie Teddy," Alyssa replied.
"Relationship, medical, both," Megan pressed.
"Mom I'll wait for Auntie Teddy, it's not urgent," Alyssa assured, "I've just been seeing him more and wanted her thoughts about something."
"How are things with Matt," Megan asked, "will you bring him for Thanksgiving?"
"We're not at meet my family yet," Alyssa said, "Uncle Owen gets really protective. It's better for me to wait and it's grandma first."
"My mom," Megan asked.
"She's softer than Uncle Owen," Alyssa said, "he gets all Major Hunt on guys I like and I hate."
The next day Owen dropped Leo off at daycare. Walking up to check on some patients he ran into Meredith.
"Owen," Meredith called.
"Good morning," Owen replied.
"How's being a single parent again," Meredith asked.
"Easier to a 8 month old boy than a 12 year old girl," Owen admitted, "I love Lyss but it was challenging getting her through the grief of losing her mom. I was mourning Meg and I had to get her daughter through it."
"It's hard," Meredith agreed," you two were so helpful when we lost Derek. Alyssa was amazing with Zola, she still is when they see her. But I'm hoping you can get her down in two weeks."
"I can," Owen replied, "it's Canadian thanksgiving she has a long weekend. What's going on?"
"Chrstina is coming on the Saturday for two nights," Meredith said, "she mentioned she wanted to see Alyssa, so I'm getting some of the people she was close to together. I was going to talk to you today about you and Leo coming."
"I'll tell her," Owen said, "I'm sure she'll come. Do you have her number? You can call Lyss. I'll let you know about me coming. Teddy is back in Seattle and living at my house. Would she be able to come?"
"Teddy is back and here," Meredith asked.
"She's meeting Bailey in a couple hours about a job," Owen said, "she's staying."
"Lyss must be excited," Meredith said.
"She doesn't know," Owen said, "we're surprising her. She'll be happy about it."
"I'm starting to understand more of why you raised Lyss how you did," Meredith said, "having all those people around. I have my sisters to help with my kids and help raise them."
"She had lots of love," Owen said, "now it's putting a community together for Leo. so far he has me, my mom and Teddy."
"Teddy and you are good at it," Meredith said, "I want someone who will co parent the way I saw you do it. You and Teddy were always calm with her. Organised, you knew what was happening you were both on top of things."
"Except the conference Lyss stayed with you and baby Zola," Owen said, "Teddy and Henry were out of town on vacation, Christina, Derek and I went to a conference. That we didn't do that well."
"She was fine, we just all got her a lego set," Meredith replied, "Derek and I picked out one to occupy her, you sent one, Chrsitina gave me one to surprise Lyss with, Teddy and Henry had dropped one off."
"We didn't communicate," Owen said, "we'd lose things between houses all the time."
"But you knew if you didn't have it Teddy did," Meredith replied.
"I will let her know Christina is in town," Owen said, "let Alyssa decide what she wants to do."
"I hope she comes," Meredith said.
"She probably will," Owen agreed, "especially if Teddy and I come."
