Alyssa rushed into the hospital.
"Uncle Owen auntie Teddy," Alyssa smiled as she burst through the door of the room.
"Hi Lyss," Teddy smiled.
"Can I meet her," Alyssa asked.
"Why we called you," Owen said.
"Alyssa this is Allison," Teddy introduced, "Allison this is your cousin Alyssa."
Alyssa softly took the baby from Teddy, "hi. I'm Lyss. You're gorgeous."
Owen snapped a picture of Alyssa sitting on the edge of the bed with Teddy and Allison to send to Megan with the caption, "my girls."
Megan, "how did you get Lyss down so fast."
Owen, "we called last night and she got home around midnight."
Megan, "you told her first?"
Owen, "we did then mom then it was too late to call you so we waited until this morning."
Megan, "I don't understand your relationship with my daughter."
Owen, "I have three kids. Alyssa, Leo and Allison."
Megan, "I know you feel that way. I'm still getting used to sharing her."
Alyssa sat with Teddy who smiled, "my girls."
"Auntie Teddy," Alyssa asked.
"Two girls and a boy," Teddy beamed.
"Are you okay," Alyssa asked.
"Sore and tired," Teddy said, "that was a lot for me physically."
"Did it hurt," Alyssa asked.
"Yes," Teddy replied, "but I would do it again for her."
"She's gorgeous," Alyssa said, "can I give her a bottle?"
"Not yet," Teddy replied, "she hasn't had one yet. I know Leo gets them and she will but for now I want to feed her."
"Okay," Alyssa agreed.
"Were you okay driving down last night," Teddy asked.
"Ya I've done it enough," Alyssa said, "I just let myself in and went to bed."
"Lyss," Teddy said, "we want you to know that it will always be your home. You will always be able to come home to us. No matter what happens where you choose to go you can always come home."
"Uncle Owen has said that," Alyssa said.
"And I want you to hear it from me," Teddy replied, "we are both here for you always. I know your mom is home and I would never try to take your place. I am always on your side. You will not lose me. Sweetheart, I am always going to be here and on your side. I know you're growing up. You are always going to be my first child."
"I know," Alyssa said.
Allison began to fuss.
"I guess you want to go back to Auntie Teddy," Alyssa smiled at the baby, "she's really good at calming people down."
"She needs to be fed," Teddy said.
"Do you want me to go," Alyssa asked.
"Do you mind grabbing coffee," Teddy asked.
"Your usual," Alyssa questioned.
"Yes," Teddy replied, "decaf please."
"I'll go and I left Allison's birthday present in the truck," Alyssa said.
"Birthday present," Teddy asked.
"It is her birthday," Alyssa smiled.
"Thank you sweetheart," Teddy smiled as Alyssa slipped out of the room.
That afternoon Megan sat on her porch with Nathan.
"Teddy had the baby," Megan said.
"And," Nathan asked.
"Allison Evelyn Hunt-Altman," Megan replied.
"Isn't Lyss's middle name Evelyn," Nathan asked.
"It is," Megan replied, "mine is Eloise."
"I know that," Nathan said.
"My grandma, mom's mom was Eloise," Megan explained, "then if Lyss ever has a daughter hopefully she'll get my name as her middle name. Mom's middle name Margaret was her grandmothers."
"Did he ask you about it," Nathan asked.
"I expected it," Megan assured.
"Have they sent you pictures," Nathan asked.
"They have and Lyss," Megan replied, ``she's with them."
"Of course she is," Nathan replied, "I remember a few years ago I went to a volleyball tournament to watch Lyss play and this girl on her team was being a bully about Alyssa being an orphan. And Owen and Teddy just wrapped her in a hug and assured her this was her family."
"They never told me," Megan said.
"They wouldn't," Nathan replied, "Owen went and talked to the girl's dad and Teddy stayed with Alyssa. She did all the things the other girls' moms were doing. Teddy was weaving ribbons to match the jersey into Alyssa's braids then did like 4 of the other girls."
"Surgical dexterity also works for doing hair," Megan laughed, "I've seen it eve when I'm there. Teddy mothers and looks after. Lyss's stocking was 80% Teddy and she spent Easter with them. It's just hard for me to see her go to Teddy rather than me about the guy she's seeing. We have a girls group chat but Lyss will ask Teddy for her thoughts more than me."
"You've been home almost a year," Nathan said, "it's getting better. She calls and texts daily now without us chasing her."
"I still want my baby back Nate," Megan said.
"She's not the little girl we knew," Nathan agreed, "I know you want that time back. I want that time with you back. I know it's hard for you when she goes to Owen or Teddy first. There will be a time she comes to you first when she's ready. Maybe we need to go see her more?"
"But Faroke is in school," Megan said.
"What if you went and I stayed her with Faroke," Nathan offered, "we did that when Lyss was little and you and Owen went to a conference she stayed with me and Beth. Which meant Lyss was with me."
"But Beth," Megan said.
"She was a show for you and Owen," Nathan said, "she liked Lyss but to look after her for a week and she pointed out repeatedly that Lyss was my step-daughter."
"You did it," Megan asked.
"All except her hair and her bath," Nathan replied, "I got Beth to help with those and some driving but I did 90% of it."
"Are you okay with my kids," Megan asked, "both of them?"
"I've always been in Lyss's life," Nathan said, "as much as she wanted me to be and Owen let me be. And I love Faroke. I'm still getting to know him but I love him Megan."
"Did you want one that's yours," Megan asked.
"At one time I did," Nathan said, "but I'd rather have you. You are more important to me than a biological child. Megan we have two kids. It's not what I expected when we met."
"When we met I had Alyssa," Megan said.
"And I always knew she was the most important person in your world," Nathan said, "now it's her and Faroke and I'm a distant second. With his adoption I would like to give him my last name as well."
"Can we use it as a second middle name," Megan asked, "I want them both to be Hunt and to match."
"What about your last name when we get married," Nathan asked.
"I'm keeping it," Megan said, "I've had it my whole life and my reputation is built on it."
"What about hyphenating," Nathan suggested, "you and Faroke."
"Maybe," Megan said, "we had talked about it years ago with Lyss but were going to give her the choice and that was only possible because they messed up her birth certificate and gave her Jarrett as a second middle name not hyphenated with Hunt like it was supposed to be but I didn't have the energy, time or money to fight it then. And she just uses Hunt."
"She has Jarrett in her legal name," Nathan asked.
"Yes but she doesn't use it ever," Megan replied, "when it was clear Derek wouldn't be around I stopped including it on her forms for daycare and school."
"Who named her," Nathan asked.
"I did," Megan replied, "Derek didn't care as long as it didn't start with the letter D. Then Faroke was 2. I chose his middle name."
"James," Nathan said.
"For my dad," Megan replied, "if he wants as he gets older he could choose to use it. I don't know. Alyssa could choose hers if she ever wanted to."
"Do you want another child," Nathan asked.
"If theres a chance of me getting pregnant yes," Megan replied, "but we know its less than 1% I can."
"Do you want to see what happens," Nathan asked.
"We had said after the last tour we would see," Megan said, "but I was 31 then. I'm 44 Nate. We were going to come home, build a life in Seattle with Alyssa near my mom and see if we could. What if we didn't actively try but didn't actively prevent. Teddy had a baby yesterday and if I'm 44 she's 47."
"So letting it happen if it happens," Nathan asked.
"Exactly," Megan said, "my injuries there was damage. I lost an ovary."
"It's your body," Nathan said.
"No birth control of any sort," Megan said, "and we do what we've been doing."
"Three kids," Nathan said.
"With huge age gaps," Megan replied, "we already have 11 and 25."
"We do," Nathan agreed, "but we can do one more. Owen and Teddy have two under 2 they're crazy. The diapers alone."
"We could adopt and avoid the diapers," Megan said, "or foster."
"Lets do our research," Nathan said.
"We could," Megan agreed, "and I want to go meet Allison soon. Fly up see her spend a couple days with Lyss."
"Book it for next week," Nathan said.
"Her birthday is in 3 weeks," Megan said, "I could go then. Go spend Lyss's birthday with her."
"Go," Nathan said, 'book the flight to Vancouver or Seattle."
"She said she's going home for her birthday and bringing Matt," Megan said.
"Then call your mom because she'll go to Owen's," Nathan said.
"I'll go for her birthday and surprise her," Megan agreed.
"Go book it," Nathan said, "I'll go get Faroke from the birthday party."
