Chapter 1
Obi-wan landed his speeder at the platform in front of Padme Amidala's apartment. Ever since Satine and her sister Bo-Katan arrived on Coruscant they have been staying here, which was weeks ago. Satine has spent most of the time since she arrived locked in her room. He has tried to talk to her, to see her, but he had little success, she kept to herself and no one could get her to talk with them, not him, not Padme and not Bo. He was grateful to Padme for allowing both of them to stay at her place. That was the one thing he thought would never see Satine's sister here on Corrsusant with her sister on her own accord.
When they first arrived Bo immediately contacted him and told him that they were on the planet. He moved them from their ship to Padmes for safety. Satine was in tears when he first came to her, she could barely speak being overcome with stress and grief. Bo explained what happened, that she and those loyal to her and Satine managed to get her sister out of the prison Maul put her in. Many people lost their lives to get Satine out of there and Korkie was one of them. Satines nephew gave his own life to see his aunt free, the boy was brave and Obi-wan felt grief, he didn't know the boy very well but he knew that he was a good man.
Bo was a soldier she grieved for Korkie in her own way but Satine, the boy's death seemed to break her. Obi-wan told the council what Satine and Bo told him, about Maul, Savage and their army, how they took over Mandalore and they have been debating it ever since. Officially Mandalore was still neutral, Almec being in charge now.
Entering the apartment he was met by Padme.
"Senator," Obi-wan said with a small bow.
"Master Kenobi," she said. He looked behind her and saw Bo sitting at the table drinking tea, another cup at the seat opposite of her. "Care for tea?"
"Yes, I would appreciate it," he said and Padme moved to the kitchen to get one more cup while he walked over to the table and sat next to the former Deathwatch member. She did not even acknowledge him as he saw down, her gaze was kept on the cup.
"How is she?" he asked.
She took a sip from the cup and put it back on the table. "The same as last time, she has not exited the room in a week now, she barely eats. I keep trying to get her out but she just lays on the bed, refusing to move. The doors are still locked so if you want to talk to her you are either going to have to do it from the hallway or find a way to bust those doors open.
Padme brought him a cup of tea and he took it from her hands. "Thank you, Senator,"
"Don't mention it," Padme said with a small smile.
"So what did your council say, will they help us to take back Mandalore or not?" Bo asked,
Obi-wan sighed "They are still discussing it."
"Discussing? They have been doing that for a week! Our home has been taken over by a sith lord and they are discussing it!" Bo said in an angry tone, rising from her seat.
"It not that simple," Obi-wan said as he put the cup on the table.
Bo slammed her fist on the table. "It is that simple!"
Obi-wan looked at the Mandalorian warrior "Officially Mandalore and other systems that are bound to it are neutral. If the Republic attacks Mandalore it would seem as if we are breaking the treaty. The council is trying to find a way but so far has had little success. Maul has not shown his face, Almec is in charge officially."
"You Jedi are useless," Bo said threw gritted teeth and tossed the cup at the wall, breaking it. After a few moments, Bo calmed down slightly and looked at Padme apologetically before leaving to get some air.
Obi-wan sighed and shook his head "I'm sorry Padme, I should not be put this burden on you, this is my problem to deal with. I should have aimed for Maul's head all those years ago, if I did none of this would be happening."
Padme put her hand on Obi-Wan's shoulder "You could not have known that he would return. You could not have predicted that he would attack Mandalore of all places," Padme said trying to reassure him.
"It should not have come to this," Obi-wan said regret clear in his voice.
"It shouldn't have but it did, there is nothing you could do now to change the past but you can find a solution for the future," the Jedi looked at the senator with a thankful expression on his face.
"Thank you for the kind words Padme, I think I should try and speak with her again," Obi-wan said as he drank the last of his tea and walked towards the guest room where Satine had been staying.
He knocked on the door first before he spoke. "Satine it's me, could we talk?" No answer came but he could hear her moving inside the room. After a few seconds, he tried again. "Satine."
"Go away!" Sarine shouted from the other side of the door.
"Satine, please we need to talk," Obi-Wan pleaded.
"Go away!" she shouted again.
"Satine, I'm not leaving until we talk, you need to leave that room. Satine, I beg you." Obi-Wan pleaded. After a long moment the doors opened and out came Satine wearing a nightgown Padme let her borrow, her eyes red from the crying, dark circles around her eyes.
"What do you want Obi?" she asked.
"I want you to come out, you need to leave the room, eat something, you need to talk to people," Obi-wan said in a pleading tone.
"I don't want to, I just want to be left alone," Satine said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Obi-wan put his hands on her shoulders "You know I can't do that, there are people here who are worried about you, I'm worried about you."
"Just leave me," she said this time a bit louder.
"Satine," he pleaded.
"Leave me alone!" she shouted this time and moved back into the room and closed the door once more, leaving him alone in the hallway.
"Satine, please," Kenobi said with a heavy heart, he wished nothing more than to help the woman he loves to retake her home from the sith he should have ended years ago, his mistake cost her everything.
Satine did not want anyone to bother her, she did not want to see anyone, to talk to anyone, she just wanted to be left alone. She let the world she was supposed to protect fall into the hands of murderers and other criminals, she failed her people, failed all those who supported her but most importantly she failed Korkie, she let him die. He gave his life so she would live, in her eyes that was not a fair trade.
When she first arrived here she felt some consolation from Obi-wan but that soon disappeared as the council's decision to help her failed to reach her day after day. Eventually, she realized that they won't help her, that they have turned on her as well. Her home would stay in the hands of Maul forever.
Bo Katan entered the apartment once Obi-wan was gone, heading back to the Jedi temple. She could not stand this lack of action, they were just waiting for the Jedi to finally have mercy and decided to help us, Bo Katan knew that the possibility of that was slim, there was too much bad blood between the Mandalorians and the Jedi. She knew that if they wanted to retake their home, they would have to do it on their own.
None of this would have happened if Satine kept to their ways. Her older sister was always strong, determent, smart, dutiful, she was born to lead, while she was only some of those things. Satine was always the star pupil, excelling in everything from literature to combat. When they would spar as children Satine would hold back and that made Bo angry. She put more effort into her studies, honing her skills as a warrior, as a Mandalorian. Until one day her sister was not holding back any longer and she was glad for it.
Everything changed when they lost their parents, Satine most of all. The sister she knew, the one that would stand against anyone, that could beat anyone in a fight was gone in her place was left a woman who shunned anything relating to weapons, combat and violence. Bo was angry that her sister decided to throw away everything their parents taught them, but she stayed with her, they were sisters after all. But as time went on she grew more and more disillusioned with Satine, the laws she passed and the decisions she made went against everything their people stood for. The arguing became worse and worse. Satine didn't even want to carry a weapon to protect herself which resulted in Bo having to save her sister on at least two occasions.
After that she could bear it any longer, the sister she knew was gone, she had no place in this new Mandalore and she decided to leave, join the ones to wanted to bring back their old ways, even if she had to go against her own sister to do it.
Now she regretted some of her actions, if not most. The sith hold their home and it's all because they gave it to them. She needs to retake it but she can't do it alone, she needs Satine to do it. Entering the leaving area she found Padme there sitting on the table looking at her.
"Anything?" she asked to which the senator only shook her head. Satine has been in that room wallowing in self-pity for almost weeks now, she needs her sister back on her feet again. She thought that Kenobi might be able to break Satine out of it but he seemed to have little luck with it.
Bo growled in frustration. Maybe the time has come to try the hard way. Bo moved through the hall and reached Satines room, knocking hard several times. "Open up Satine," she shouted.
"Go away!"
"Open up now! Stop acting like a crying child. Either you open these doors willingly or I used thermal charges to blow them up, it's your choice!" Bo shouted again and this time her sister opened the door and came out, her eyes filled with tears.
"What do you want?" Bo did not say anything she just grabbed Satine and pulled her through the hall until they reached the living area. "Bo!"
"This should do," Bo thought as she looked at the room. Satine pulled out of her sister's grip before Bo caught her again and tossed her to the floor.
"Bo!" shouted Padme.
"Stay out of this senator, this is not your business," Bo said as she glared at the senator.
Satine pulled herself up from the floor "What's wrong with you Bo!"
"Wrong, this is what's wrong," she said as she threw a punch that caught Satine off guard and hit her in the jaw sending her stumbling a few meters back,
"Bo?" Satine said as she looked at her sister in surprise.
"You are responsible for this, you were too weak and now we lost our home," Bo said and threw another punch this one hitting Satine as well.
"Bo stop!" said Padme but Bo ignored it.
"You are a failure!" Bo shouted and scored the third punch. "You failed our people."
"Bo?" said Satine, her eyes filled with tears.
"You failed them all, you failed Korkie, you failed me," Bo said and threw the fourth punch but this time Satine dodged it.
"You left me first, you were my sister and you left me," Satine said.
"Because you changed, you started destroying everything that made our people who we are."
"I was trying to protect them," Satine shouted.
"From what? Themselves?"
"Yes!"
"You decided to forget everything that our parents and grandparents taught us, to spit on our family's legacy."
"It wasn't like that!"
"No, because it sure seems like it. You know how many times I saved your life since you changed. My greatest regret was not saving our brother instead of you. He would have seen reason."
"Don't talk about him," Satine narrowed her eyes and said.
"Talk about what, that he died because of you, because he stood by you just as I did and that got him killed, Korkie grew up without a father because of you!"
"That was not my fault! We were attacked, they killed him."
"We would not have been attacked if you stayed true to our way, you didn't need to wage war on the galaxy, you just needed to keep them alive. If you did that he would still be alive."
"It's not my fault," anger started to rise in Satine. Her brother's death was not her fault.
"It is."
"It is not!" shouted Satine in anger.
"It is, accept it already, he died because of you, we lost everything because of you!"
This seemed to work for when Bo threw the next punch Satine caught it in her hand, a look of self-pity in her eyes now replaced with anger, a look of anger Bo had not seen in years. The punch that Satine threw was unexpected and caught Bo straight on the nose, sending her back a few meters.
Bo growled and attacked Satine once again. The punch caught Satine in the stomach. Satine retaliated by kicking Bo back and then lunged at her, hitting Bo's jaw. Bo uppercuts her sister and then kicked her to the ground.
Bo jumped on Satine and pinned her down. The two looked each other in the eyes when Satine head budded Bo and pushed her off herself. The fight went on for several more minutes before both stopped. They were laying on the floor, Satine had a busted lip, a bruise on her left cheek and jaw while Bo had a busted tooth, a black eye and several bruises just like Satine.
The two lay on the floor panting, trying to catch their breaths. Out of nowhere, Bo started to laugh and Satine looked at her sister as if she was insane.
"There is the Satine I remember," Bo continued to laugh until she winced as she felt pain in her ribs, the laughing stopped and she grabbed her side. "I think you broke something."
"You attacked me. I defended myself. It's your own fault."
"That's right. You fought back."
"Wait, I did," Satine said with a dumbfounded look on her face.
"Yeah, and it seems you have not lost your touch but you are a bit rusty."
"You did this on purpose, I shouldn't have done that," Satine said, both angry at her sister for pulling such a stunt and at herself for harming another.
Bo pulled herself up, the pain still there. "Why not, you were attacked you fought back."
"Yes but, that's not who I am."
"It is, you are as much of a Mandalorian as I am, you are the dutches, the leader of our people and right now our people need you. They need you to fight for them."
Satine shook her head "I don't know if I can. If I did I would be a hypocrite to every ideal I ever stood for."
Bo rose to her feet, looking down on her sister. "You won't retake your place with words if we want to retake our home from Maul you are going to need to fight for it. The Jedi won't help us, no matter how much Kenobi asks it from them, they won't. We need to do this, you and me, just like it always was."
"I can't fight, I swore to never pick up a weapon again, to never lay my hands on another again."
"And yet you did, you took a blaster in your hands when you were attacked on your ship and you just beat the shit out of me. Your people need you to fight. We can't let Maul rule."
"What will they think of me?"
"They will think you their dutches, their ruler, protector, their Mandalore. That's who you always were, the time has come for you to step up to it. Take back what belongs to you, to us, our clan," Bo said with determination in her green eyes.
Satine put her head between the knees "I don't know if I can."
"I know you sister, you can," Bo said and left the room.
