'I'm guessing this was about the last place you expected me to be.' Deacon wasn't entirely sure where to start. Talking to Rayna used to be the most natural thing in the world, but he was out of practice. He could still read her though, Rayna was usually good at hiding her emotions from the world, but Deacon had always been able to see right through her. Right now, he could see she was pissed off, with maybe some hurt lying underneath. It was a look he's seen a lot, usually when he showed up after another bender.
'You think.' Rayna uttered with incredulity. He couldn't really blame her for that. If she had just shown up at his doorstep with no warning, he'd feel the same way.
After that there was a beat of silence, neither of them really sure where the conversation was going. Deacon had both too little and too much he wanted to say. He couldn't help the feeling, that despite how awkward it was, seeing her again was the best thing that happened to him in the last decade. She was still breathtakingly beautiful. 'It's good to see you Ray, really'
'Funny, you didn't seem to feel that way when you left town without even bothering to say goodbye.' He could hear the bitterness in her voice. Instead of feeling guilty and contrite over the fact, he let his own bitterness take over, she wasn't really the want who was abandoned.
'Figured you were busy with your new husband.' At that, Rayna let and an incomprehensible noise, and turned away form him for a second. When she turned back to him her wall was up and from years of experience, he knew he wouldn't be getting through to her now.
'Look it's been a long time, no need to rehash details from a decade ago. We're both on this tour now, so I guess we need to learn how to co-exist.'
'Right, I get on that,' Deacon replied slightly sarcastically before walking out.
When he walked back out into the main cabin, he could feel everyone's eyes on him. Apparently, everyone wanted to know about the reunion between the Queen of Country and her former guitar player. For the most part he avoided anyone's eyes on his way back to his seat. The conversation with Rayna hadn't exactly gone how he hoped, it appeared it was gong to be a long tour. He was in the middle of debating the wisdom of his decision to agree to do the tour when Rayna finally returned to her seat. They locked eyes for a second, before Rayna quickly diverted eye contact. In that moment he knew there was nowhere else he wanted to be, if only she felt the same way.
