Coyote Den:

"Don't mess with something
that ain't bothered you."

A Cowboy Saying, 1880

.

Skye had gotten up early to start her search for the two foxes. She had a lot of terrain to cover, and she had such little to go on. What little information she had made her decide to head West through the hill sides.

Everything was going smoothly when all of a sudden the horse became spooked. It whined and reared up. Skye tried to tame the damn horse, but the stallion would not listen. Instead, the stallion went wild, rearing up and starting to collapse. It was only then did she hear the loud echo of a gunshot. The bullet hit the horse but it was apparent by way the horse suddenly toppled onto its side, dead.

Skye's leg was buried underneath the horse. Pinning her to the ground. She tried hard to unpin herself from under the horse, but the massive stallion would not budge. Galloping of hooves grow louder as they approached her. Skye couldn't turn her head to see who it was that attacked her, but she can tell it was more than one rider. The galloping came to a stop but the laughter continued, then one of the riders spoke.

"Did ya see that? Did you see it? I got her." The voice sounded all too familiar to her.

"Yeah, little brother. You did some good shootn" another voice said.

Hearing the second confirmed her theory, and that there was a silent third attacker. She knew exactly who her attackers were. They did not have to step into her line of sight for her to know. It was Stue, Lue, and Hue, the Brittle Brothers. All three of them finally came into her line of sight They were laughing, hollering, and slapping each other on the back. Hue looked the happiest, jumping up and down all while holding a Sharps Buffalo rifle in his hands. Lue, always with his double barrel shotgun. And then Stue, with his hands on his knees leaning down at Skye.

"Well now," he said. "Look who got themselves into quite a pickle?" He laughed.

He was right. They had gotten the drop on her. She couldn't even reach for her six iron. She had her Crossdraw knife in reach, but little help it would do her.

"Lue," Stue said. "Why don't we help our little friend here out." Lue took his shotgun and slammed the butt of the gun hard on Skye's head, knocked her out cold.

When Skye finally came to, everything started out as a blur. Her head hurt like hell, feeling the blood vessels swell up and pump. Faintly hear the three Brittle Brothers celebrating their victory. She tried to move, but found that she couldn't. She couldn't move at all or nor speak only making muffled cries. Looking at her situation she found that she was tied to an oak tree. Her feet were bound together and a cloth gag tied around her mouth, keeping her from talking, or screaming, or even biting. She did have a razor tucked into her boot, but not efficient if she had no way of reaching it. The Brittle Brothers celebrity their victory over around a camp fire where a pot was cooking, and all three talking about what they planned on doing to her.

"So what are we going to do with her Stue?" Hue asked excited, like kit about to have a treat, all while poking the fire with an iron prod.

From what little Skye saw, all three of them rummage through her gear. Like they were playing with souvenirs or toys that they just won at a carnival. Stue had her gun holster slung across his arm, running his greasy hands over her gun, smearing what ever he had on his hands onto the black holster. Lue wore Skye's Montana hat on top of his head, he kept folding the curvature bands up and down, soon he'll be ruining it. Lastly, as always, Hue was playing with her knife, picking his teeth with the knife's sharp point.

"I'll tell you what we're go n' do little b." Stue said. He put a chunk of black tobacco on the inside of his left cheek. "We go n' to ride to the boarder and sell her. Try for nine hundred for her and split it three ways. It won't be even close to twenty-thousand, but I believe what's important is the message. That no one, and I mean no one, trifles with the Brittle Brothers and gets away with it."

Stue turned toward Skye. Seeing she was awake made his smile grow even bigger. He spat black tar from his lips and wiped the drool off of his muzzle with his hand.

"Well look who is finally coming around" he said. "The Lady that's going to prove she's a big tough bounty hunter. Well from where I stand, you ain't looking too tough. Fact, we were just talking about what we should do with you."

"You're going to make us some money Lady" Lue said.

"Lue, shut up" piped Stue. "But he's right. Figure n' the best thing to do with you is to at least make a quick profit. We go n' to ride to the boarder and cross it. I'm sure we can find a brothel full of working gals that will want to quickly buy a pretty little think like you up." Stue caress Skye's cheek with the back of his long finger and claw. Skye flinched away from his finger. "And don't worry. We're not going to drag you behind our horses, you'll have a comfy spot on my saddle when we ride. Of course, I said it before and I'll say it again, we Brittle Brothers don't mind sharing a fine looking thing like you."

Skye tried to cry out in protest, but her cries were muffled by the gag. Stue reached over to pull the cloth gag out of her mouth. She moved her jaw back and forth wanting the dry cotton mouth out of her mouth to speak.

"I'm going to kill you," Skye said, fury in her eyes and a dead tone in her voice. "All of you. I'm going to kill each and every one of you. I don't know how and I don't know when, but I promise you that I will kill you."

Stue sent the back of his hand flying, swatting the side of Skye's face. Her lip started to bleed. Stue turned back to his brother's.

"Quit a mouth on this one, ain't she," Stue said, all of his brothers snickered at. "Seems like something we should do about."

"Maybe cut out her tongue," Hue said. "That'll shut her up."

"Nah" Lue said. "Do that and won't be able to get a good price for her."

"Hell, we might be able to go up in price if we did that" Stue said. "Mammals get fed up when their lady starts yammering on about pointless things." Stue put the cloth gag back into her mouth. Skye's cries were once again muffled. "Face it Lady, as long as you are tied up the way that you are, you're as docile as a flee. You can't do anything to hurt us."

Skye, with her feet bound, she shot them straight up between Stue's legs. Stue gave out a moan full cry of pain and toppled onto his side. She wasn't done yet. She took her bound feet and rocket them forward into Stue's face. Imprint of her boot formed on his face. He rolled over to escape anymore attacks. Finally, composing himself, he reached up to touch his face. Blood smeared on his hand and his eye start to swell up. Enraged, Stue got up and headed to the fire. He grabbed the iron fire poker out of the fire, the tip of the poker was white-hot. He marched over to Skye.

"Maybe, I'll just drive this into you nice and slow. See how long it takes for you actually apologies." He put the fire poker close to her face. The heat radiate from the tip.

Everyone's ears pointed upward at the sound of rickety wagon wheels coming closer. Lue and Hue climbed on top their horses for a better look and be ready for whoever was approaching, Lue ready with his shotgun and Hue with his rifle. Stue got up and tossed the fire poker to the side. He put his hand on his six-iron, ready to draw.

Out of the forest brush, came a wooden wagon being pulled by a black charter horse. Riding on the wooden seat was the Swedish rabbit, Jack Savage, wearing his bowlo hat and thick gray and black stripped fur coat. He hummed a song as the wagon approached the three brothers. He had the black stallion come to a halt. He stood up and took his hat off to greet them.

"Hello my gentle-mammals" he said. Stepping down off his wagon and approaching Stue. Lue and Hue were trying to prepare for anything.

"You're the Swed," Lue said.

"What do you want Swed?" Stue asked.

"Well, I've come with the information that you are holding a wonderful Lady against her will. Now, I know you boys are simply doing business and trying to get by."

Jack reached into his coat. Stue pulls out his six-iron and Lue and Hue raise their weapons, ready to fire upon the little rabbit.

"Easy fellas, no reason to become hostile." Jack pulls out his billfold very slowly, so they don't mistakenly shoot him. "I am willing to pay for her release."

"You got to be joking," Stue chuckled and spat black tar onto Jack's boots.

"No joke, I will pay for her freedom at a reasonable price."

"Okay, Swed. Let's make a deal."

"Yes, I like the sound of that"

"We were going to sell her at reasonable price of nine hundred dollars. But for you Swed, I'll sell her to you at one thousand dollars." The Brittle Brothers laughed out loud.

"A thousand dollars" said Jack. "Very well sir, you have your self a deal."

"And then another six hundred dollars for the two of you to ride on out of her safely. Since there are two of you, that's three hundred dollars each."

Jack lowered his billfold and let out a deep sigh. "So you are asking for a ridiculous amount of sixteen-hundred."

"What's wrong Swed. You don't think you and her are worth that much to ride out of here safe and sound?"

"No, your right. Sixteen-hundred it is." Jack started to dig into his billfold for the money.

"Or how about this, you just hand over that billfold of yours and you ride on out of here like you never saw us. You got that Swed?"

Jack closes his billfold. "So you have no intention of letting me buy her freedom or mine today, but instead plan on robbing me?"

"Don't think of it as robbing you Swed. Think of it as paying for your protection out of these here woods."

"And what do I need protection from, in these woods?"

Stue leans in and cocks the hammer back on his six-iron hard. "Protection from me pulling out my six-iron and shooting you dead right here on the spot."

"So, you three are what i need to protect myself from? Correct?" All the Brittle Brothers nod their heads in agreement. Jack simply smiles. "Well then, seems I have nothing to worry about."

Jack extends his hand with the billfold to Stue, who reaches out to accept the billfold. Jack lets go of the billfold and in a quick flash from under his sleeve springs out a Derringer pistol, a Cobra "Big Bore" model and fires at Stue. The moment being so quick, it happened in a flash. Stue didn't' even know what happened till he looks down at his chest where a small pea size hole was. Stue dropped to his knees and fell forward dead. Lue and Hue were still trying to figure out what had just happened.

Quickly, before the brothers start to use their thick skulls to understand and start figuring things out, Jack drew a Remington New Army revolver out from under his coat. He gave two rapid fire shots from the revolver. The first shot hitting Lue square in the chest, the blow was so powerful it knocked Lue backward off of his horse. The second shot hit Hue's steed in the neck and horse toppled over dead, and brought Hue down with him. Hue gave a loud yelp in pain as his leg became pinned down to the ground by the horse.

Jack puts the Remington back into its holster and closes his coat. He picked up his billfold and made his way over to Skye. Taking his Bowie knife out of its sheath, with one great swipe of the knife he cuts away at the ropes bindings.

"It's a real shame," he said. "I was really hoping we would come to an understanding before resorting to such violent tendencies."

The rope bindings came lose and Skye was free. She spat out the cloth gag in her mouth. From her boot she grabbed her hidden razor and cut the bindings at her feet. She got up from the ground in an angry huff. She walked over to Stue's lifeless body to reclaim her gun belt. Looking down at the dead Brittle Brother, she gave the body a hard kick. Hearing the third Brittle brother in pain she made her way to him, but not before picking up her hat and Lue's double-barrel shotgun off the ground. Hue had finally gotten out from under the horse only to face Skye marching toward him, shotgun raised and pointing at him, with both hammers cocked back.

"Now wait a minute," Hue said frantically. With a hand raised to stop Skye and scooting on back on his butt. "Just hold on now. None of this was my idea. It was all my brothers doing I swear. Please, just listen. Don't-"

Before Hue utter out another word, Skye pulled the trigger on the double barrel shotgun. Both barrels gave off a loud blast of fire and hit Hue in the chest. The Blast knocked him backwards, dead. The blast from the shotgun was so loud it scared off the other two horses, charging into the woods. Skye breathed in heavy breaths as if she was out of air.

"Feel better?" Jack asked.

"Only a little" Skye said, tossing the double barrel shotgun to the side. She straightened her hat and buckled on her gun holster. There was still one item missing. searching around she found her Crossdraw knife stabbed deep into the log that Hue had sat on. Taking the knife she returns it to its leather sheath. Lastly, she hid the small razor back in her boot.

Skye looks off to where the horse had run off to. There was despair in her eyes. No way she would be able to keep up and track them down by foot. She put her hands on her hips and kicked at the ground.

She noticed Jack was sitting at the camp fire, inspecting the pot that was cooking over the fire. He pulled the lid off and stuck a huge spoon in. He tasted what ever the contents were of the cooking pot, that being of some wholesome vegetable stew.

"Mhmm" he said with pleasure in his mouth. "These three might not have been the smartest brothers around, but they whipped up a fine tasting stew. Here come and try some." Waving Skye over to come and join him.

"No thanks," she said, "not hungry." She was too busy trying to figure out how to get out of where she was. "What's your deal anyway?" turning back to Jack. "How did you know I was in trouble? Have you been following me?"

Jack wipes stew from his mouth before answering." Not at all, not at all my lady. I simply took your advice and traveled the way you pointed and I've been slowly making my own way. Though, I did become interested when hearing the loud echo of a rifle being fired. I looked through my spyglass at a distance these three brothers surrounding you. Figured you might need some help, so I packed up camp and made my to you."

"Thanks, but I don't need your charity" Skye said. "I would have figured away out eventually. And right now I need to figure out away out of here."

"How would you like to travel with me" Jack said. "I know you don't like the idea of being partners, but I believe we would make an excellent team."

"How do I know your not going to shoot me dead once we find those foxes?"

"Oh, no, no, no." Jack said. "That wouldn't be very nice. I would look like a coward, shooting a woman in the back. I at least always face those that I'm to shoot down. More respectable." Jack took another spoonful of the stew. "I simply suggest that we make an alliance and split the reward fithy-fithy. At least til we can find an outpost that will sell you a horse."

Skye thought it over. She did not need much convincing. She had no idea where she was in the woods, or which way they brought her from, or the fact there were no longer any horse for her to ride out on. She turns to Jack.

"Okay, fine," She said. "I guess for now I will tolerate your company and for now consider us partners."

"Very well my lady," Jack said with a bow and tip from his hat. He climbed aboard his wagon and stuck out his hand for Skye to take. Skye took his hand and climbed aboard the wagon just as Jack did. Jack whipped the reins up and down for his horse to get moving. The wagon was rickety, loud, and a bit bumpy. But this wasn't something that Skye couldn't handle. They rode onward west.

(AN: Thank you for reading, and Thank you for reading this. Again, YOU'RE AWESOME! I hope you enjoyed this new installment. I both enjoyed and hated writing this chapter. I enjoyed showing what a badass Jack is, but hate how Skye went from being a badass herself to a sudden damsel in distress. But in sake of story development it seemed that this was the fastest and best way to unite Jack & Skye.

In the next installment we get to back to Judy and Nick, and see how things are progressing

As I said before, please leave a commit on how you'd rather have future chapters come out. Thank you!
