So a lot of stuff happening in the Owl House show with last week after learning about Luz's doppelganger. Cant wait for the follow up on what we learn about that in the next episode. Makes me wonder what's going to happen next in the episodes to come.
Also sorry for any errors you find. I don't have a beta reader but if any wants to be one PM me and we'll talk on some details.
Episode 5: No CON-vention
Luz lazily ate another minty cookie while she focused on the book in her hands. It was a genuine paperback book from the world Eda gets most of the trash she sells. The Good Witch Azura.
It is from a book series about a young Witch that goes on a journey of discovery and adventure, facing hardships and overcoming them. The writing was flowery and corny, and she loved it all. Luz ended up reading two of them yesterday and is now reading the third, with the fourth and fifth book waiting for her at the house.
The Padawan blinked in confusion. Was she addicted to a book series?
"..." Luz shook her head before eating another mint-tasting cookie. "Naw, the books are just that good."
"What are you muttering about now?" King said from his spot on the floor. He had his furry stuffed bunny lying next to him with a little helmet made from a bottle cap.
"Aw, nothing, King." Luz dismissed it with a wave of her hand. She looks over at Eda and sees her fixing some of her garbage into something… presentable.
"Hey Eda, I think we should call it a day," she said before standing up.
The Owl Lady stop's what she was doing and looks at Luz with an indifferent look. "Oh really, Miss Jedi. It's the middle of the day when the market is busiest. Why should we?"
The only Jedi on the Isle's gave the same look back. Then with her hand pointed at the street of the market they were in. "Eda, no customers are coming, nor are there any other vendors in sight."
Looking around, Eda sees that Luz is right and mounts a severe face. "This is a sign. Either it's your poor taste in literature or a bad omen of something to come," she said with a grim face. "You're right for today, kid. We should leave before..."
"Luz!"
"Dang it."
The Padawan turned to her two friends from school. Willow and Gus came walking towards the stand.
"Hey, guys," Luz greets them. "What's going on?"
"Something amazing is happening today!" Gus said, and Willow held a poster up in her hands.
"It's the annual Convention!" Willow hands the poster to Luz. "Student witches get to see all the types of covens before they're placed in one. There's even a mystery guest this year!"
Luz looks over the poster. "So a job fair for witches? That sounds interesting. Hey Eda, can we check it out?" She looks over and asks the older Witch.
"No way. Absolutely not!" Eda said firmly and made Luz moan in annoyance. "Those covens may seem nice, but I never joined a coven for a reason. Sure they look like a fun club for witches, but if you join one, you're also giving up your magical independence to be part of a corrupt system." Eda noticed the blank looks Willow and Gus were giving her. "But, eh, you know, no judgment. In any case, I haven't been to one since we were girls."
"We?" Luz's eyebrow lifted at the word.
Eda seems caught off guard as Luz stood a bit close to her. "More to your mysterious past. Care to share with the rest of the class, Miss Owl Lady?" Luz pressed.
Eda was flat-footed for a moment before regaining her bearing. "It's none of your business."
"Alright, fine, I won't push." Luz raised her hands in an attempt at surrendering. The teasing on her face was not leaving. "If! You come with us to the conversation."
"No. And there's nothing you can do that will change my mind." Eda proclaimed.
To the young Jedi, that sounded like a challenge. Luz gave a dark chuckle before handing her Azura book to King.
"King. Read aloud my 'bad taste of literature,' please." She said with a smirk.
King opened the book to a random page and then began to read aloud. "'You shall not say shan't doeth... no more harm,' Azura callethed out."
"So flowery, so terrible," Eda droned as she began to walk away and called up the portal door.
The Witch was about to walk through but found herself levitating off the ground. Eda turned her head around and saw Luz's hand raised at her and realized she was using those Force powers of hers on her. The Padawan herself had a sly smirk on her face.
"Don't go, Eda. King was just getting to the best part!" Luz said sweetly.
"No fair!" Eda plugged her ears, but somehow, King's voice still reached her. "FINE! Stop it! Stop it! I will literally do anything to stop this!" Eda shouted in defeat.
After packing up the stand, the five stood in front of a large building in town where many creatures mingled or entered. Down at the entrance, Luz was helping Eda push her large wild hair into a cloak.
"Just a little more… there," Eda said as the last of her gray hair was pushed inside.
"You need a bigger cloak, and is this really necessary?" Luz said.
Eda waved it off. "When you have a bounty on your head with wanted posters everywhere for more than just for petty theft." Several small objects, from snacks to potions, fell from her hair. "One moment." Eda collected them to stuff them back. "I'm also wanted for never joining a coven. If the guards find me, I'll be captured and off to jail… again."
The Warden's love confession came to mind, making the Padawan shiver. "Yeah, we don't need that."
"Maybe this convention will change your mind," Willow said as she approached Eda with one of her wanted posters.
Eda traces a spell that pulls Willow's cowl over her face. "Let's just get this over with."
They entered the building and were greeted by all kinds of activities. Luz looked at all the kiosks and banners that hung everywhere. Creatures of all shapes moved about and interact with the ones staffing the booths or flying around on broomsticks between large multicolored tapestries hanging from the roof.
"Wow. Big place," Luz said as she followed her friends. "So, these are Covens?" She asked.
"Yep," Willow answered and pointed at the nine tapestries above. "Those are the main nine covens, but there are hundreds of other ones you can join." She pulled Luz along and showed them.
"There's Flower Coven, Artist Coven, Big Dog Coven, Small Cat Coven, Tiniest Cat Coven." Willow listened before Eda groaned loudly.
"Don't suppose they have a Coven for grumpy people?" Luz said half-jokingly.
Eda raised her fist at them. "What was that?!"
"They actually do," Willow whispered before the teens ran off laughing.
As they browsed through the booths, Luz spotted a familiar face over by a tall bearded man in a yellow hard hat.
"Tiny nose?" Luz said in slight surprise. "I haven't seen her since she was imprisoned at the Conformitorium. Good to see her make it out. What Coven is that, by the way?" She pointed.
"That's the Construction Coven, one of the main nine," Willow said as the hard hat man lifted both stacks of bricks into the air and let them fall perfectly to construct a tiny house.
"Whoa..." Luz was awed by the strength and versatility. "They make the Republic combat engineers look like kids playing with building blocks."
Willow continues to explain. "As one of the main nine. They use power glyphs to increase their strength." They observe as the bearded Witch grabs one power glyph from a stack atop his head. Peels the adhesive off the back of one and puts it on Tiny Nose's face.
Tiny Nose's eyes widened before she felt a rush of power exploding from her body like the Force was swirling around her. Tiny Nose then screams and picks up the Witch, throwing him in the air.
"Ha-a-a! I'm the destwoya of worlds!" She shouted before going on a rampage to demolish everything in sight as other construction Witches rushed to stop her.
"Holy kriff!" Luz said in shock. A light blue double of Luz ducks out from behind her.
"Holy kriff!" The blue double said before walking off.
"Holy what...?" Her illusion double walks over to two Illusion track witches. It waves at her and disappears.
Gus runs over to the other witches. "Ah! You've been taken in by the allure of the Illusionist Coven. We like to magic with a hint..." Gus disappears in a cloud of smoke and reappears a few feet to the right. "...of showmanship." He finishes while giving a bow before two older Illusion track students appear next to Gus in different poses.
"Wow! Acceptance? Comradery? A sense of belonging? Eda, why didn't you ever find a Coven to join?" Luz asked the older Witch.
"See for yourself." Eda gets behind Luz and points at the Illusionist Coven's booth. There they saw another Illusion Track Witch standing with one of the other ones. "When you join a coven, all your other magic is sealed away."
The Illusion Witch branded a magic tattoo in the shape of a mirror appearing on the kid's arm. Light blue lines run up his arms and to his face. The kid pales slightly as the lines fade.
"From now on, that kid will only be able to make illusions. Since I never joined a coven, I can do every kind of magic." Eda demonstrated by creating a fireball in one hand and a water ball in the other, then making both disappear. "That's why I'm the most powerful Witch on the Boiling Isles," she said smugly.
"For real? They do this to everyone?" Luz couldn't imagine it. It'd be like a Jedi only using the Force only for healing or only lifting objects. Nothing else.
"Yep, think wisely before agreeing to anything at these events."
They continued to browse the booths and walk up to see a section with six people standing in rows of three, each wearing caped uniforms evocative of birds and masks that conceal their identities. It reminded Luz a bit of the Jedi Temple Guards. "What Coven is this?"
Gus gasped. "It's the Emperor's Coven! Do you think they'll sign my forehead?" He asked Willow.
"Only one way to find out," she answered before the two ran in. Luz watches them go before turning to a moody Eda.
"No way, kid. Out of all them, they are the worst of the worst. I'll wait out here," Eda said.
"Alright, I understand." She was about to go in but gave Eda one more look. "Just for the record. I agree with you."
"Huh?"
"About having your magic restricted," Luz clarifies. "Couldn't even imagine if my connection to the Force was restricted like these guys are with magic." She then leaves and enters the showcase.
Eda felt her mood improve slightly while she watched her apprentice leave. Feeling grateful that the young girl was smart enough to think for herself rather than follow the status quo. Her feelings were cut short when she saw one of the guards taking an interest in her. Eda silently curses her luck and follows after her kid.
Luz entered an enlarged fighting arena with ringside seats to overlook it. A raised podium was down below and slightly overlooking the fighting area. A big white banner depicted with a gold pyramid and a sword with wings hung over the podium. The place reminded her of some of the training areas from the Jedi temple.
Finding a seat in a relatively open seating area, Luz decided on a wait-and-see approach to this little showcase. Movement catches her in the corner of her eye, revealing Eda taking a seat next to her.
"Change your mind about all this?" Luz asked her mentor.
"Nope. Just hiding from the po-po." Eda denied and crossed her arms. "Ugh, let's get this over with."
The lights dimmed a bit, and a spotlight shined down on the podium, revealing Principle Bump with a microphone being held up with wings. "Hello, Bonesborough! Students ask me all the time, 'Principal Bump, what's the height of magical achievement?'"
"Is it this?!" A student with a brown Hexside uniform asked as he stood up and drew a spell circle next to his head. The spell increased the size of his head significantly before his neck couldn't support it and fell on the student next to him.
Luz cringed at the action While Eda looked at it indifferently.
Principal Bump also cringes at the spell. "Wow. I failed you as a principal." He grabs the mike and moves on with the show. "It's being chosen to join the best of the best. And there is none better than the jewel of the coven system-" Three witches in white cloaks and masks appear in a flash. "-and the enforcers of His will, the Emperor's Coven."
The crowd cheered as they saw the appearance of the coven members. Looking over to where Gus and Willow sat to gauge their reaction. They were frantically pointing to an autograph on Gus' forehead that he was able to get. This made Luz laugh with a bit of uncertainty. Wondering if this is what normal kids act like or if she was just really matured. She gave a thumbs up to show that she saw it. Turning back to the show, her eyes caught sight of a familiar green head of hair sitting in the front row. "Amity?"
"Feast your eyes on this elite force, each member handpicked to help usher in a new age of controlled magic," Principal Bump continues. Each Coven guard traces a white spell circle above their heads. One produces a jet of flame, another water, and the third lightning. The three elemental spells come together in a firework display.
"Whoa." Luz looked at the three members after performing the display. "They really are like the Jedi Temple guards."
Eda nudges an elbow at her. "Bet you can beat those so-called elites, huh, Luz."
The young Jedi crossed her arms and let a ladylike huff. "Please, Eda, have some restraint... they're going to need all of them for a chance against me." Eda slaps her knee with a laugh.
Looking back, all the coven members had their respected elemental magic in their hands like a bit of showmanship while Bump continues.
"Members of the Emperor's Coven have access to all, yes, all forms of magic. Ooh. Aah." The crowd repeated the "Ooh," and the "Aah." Making Luz question the intelligence of the people of this world. "But... only the best can ascend these ranks. Some day that could be one of you!" He points randomly at the audience, which happens to be where Amity was sitting, who brightens and squeals in her spot.
Luz saw this and made her wonder if there was more to the mean girl.
The three guards grab their capes and disappear in flashes of white light. "And now, I'm pleased to introduce the esteemed leader of this Coven and this year's mystery guest. You know her, you love her! Lilith!"
The Audience gasps as Eda stops laughing and looks down with a shocked look. "Huh?"
A bright flash of light near the ceiling turns into a slim bluebird sitting on a branch. The bird dove off the branch, down to the stage next to Principle Bump. Upon landing and sending a wave of magic that washes over the crowd, revealing a new witch. This one is also wearing a sleeker and narrower mask with a white cloak. With a wave of her hand, the bird disappeared in blue sparkles. The Witch removed her mask and crow, revealing a middle-aged woman with dark blue hair, mint green eyes, and black lipstick.
As the crowd cheers, Eda was noticeably silent that caught the Jedi's attention. She had expected the Witch to make some comment on the leader but found the women open-mouthed and stunned. The look of her eyes presented that she knew the woman down below.
"You know her?" She asked.
"You could say that..."
"Thank you for coming here today." She magically sends her mask and cloak back into Principal Bump. "It wasn't easy for me to rise to the top. I also started from humble beginnings. Now I have the highest honor of enforcing the Emperor's will. So be more! The Emperor's Coven awaits you!"
She spins, creating another bird illusion with its wings spread out, brushing the walls.
The Jedi didn't say anything or move as the show ended, and the audience stands up and leaves. Instead, she focuses on the conflicting emotions that bubbled inside her companion.
Before the Witch could leave, Luz put a hand on her shoulder. "Eda, are you alright?" She asked.
Eda had a somewhat cold look when looking at Lilith that turned back to Luz. "No. I'm not… I'm going to head home. Wash the Coven junk off." Eda said before taking off.
Luz watched her mentor leave. The anger and sadness radiating from her were intense through the Force. Making her worry for her Mentor/companion/friend. She decided to leave the Witch alone to cool off and talk with her again when she's all better.
Turning to leave herself, she decided to venture off and look what other Covens are around.
After a bit of wandering about the convention and seeing the different Covens, Luz's mind still lingered on Eda. She was so distracted that she nearly walked face-first into another person.
"Excuse me," Luz said to the person. Only to see that it was Amity. "Oh..."
"Watch where you- Oh, it's you." The look she gave Luz said it all. "The human."
"I have a name. It's Luz." The Jedi not taking a liking to the uptight attitude.
"I don't care," Amity said rather harshly. "You don't belong here. This is a place for Witches and aspiring magical students. Not for humans or creatures with no magic talents."
"Your point being that I care about what you say," Luz fired back and got up to her face. "I may have yet to start my first day at Hexside, but that doesn't mean I know nothing about magic. I've got a great mentor with lots of hands-on experience and a knowledgeable demon expert with her to help me in this world."
Amity gave a huff of amusement and points behind Luz. "And is that your demon expert there?"
Turning around, Luz was met with the sight of King wearing all sorts of clothing and garnishes. Eating cupcakes and being followed by a bunch of different Coven recruiters that the little demon ignores.
"Um, yeah..." Luz answered hesitantly, trying not to coo at King's cuteness and not for the sudden awkwardness.
Watching as King ate a cupcake before rushing off to Luz with another. "Hey, Luz! Look at all those offerings-Wah!" He ended up tripping over the scarf he wore and dropped his cupcake.
Luz goes to help him up. "These offerings may be a little much for you, King." She said and put him back on his feet.
"So what is he supposed to be, some kind of pet?" Amity said with an amused smirk, causing King and Luz to look back at her.
"HEY! I am not a pet!" King shouted to her. Luz just stood up and looked her straight in the eye.
"You know, Amity. I don't see why you're so mean all the time. From what I can feel from you, it seems fake." Amity's ears twitched at that. "But go ahead and call me whatever you like. What you say means nothing to me, but tread carefully, Blight. For when you start bullying my friends, then you are about to start something you don't want to see the outcome." Luz warned.
The warning seemed to not reach the girl's ears as she just stood proud and stared back. "Don't like the outcome? You and your pet are giving witches in training a bad name."
The way she said it seemed to set something off in Luz. Those people in high society or positions of power think they are above everyone. She never liked them, and this girl seemed to push the right buttons.
"Alright then, Amity. Then let's see if your words hold meaning." Luz challenge.
"My words?" Amity said, confused for the first time in the conversation. Then it turned to amusement as she got what the Jedi was talking about. "You don't seriously mean a duel? You think you have what it takes to go up against me?"
"More than you'll ever know." The Jedi stared hard at the young Witch. "Amity Blight, I challenge you to a duel!"
Everyone nearby gasps at the declaration. Amity takes several steps forward into Luz's face with a smug smirk.
"I accept. Terms for this duel?"
"If I win, you have to lose the attitude, be nicer to people, and admit that humans like me can be Witches." Luz pointed at herself.
"And if I win, you have to admit to the whole convention that humans can't become witches, and you have to give up learning magic. Forever!" Amity declared.
"Do it, Luz!" King cheered but was paid no mind by the two teens.
Luz gave the young Witch a low laugh. "Agreed. When and where?"
"Inside the theater where they held the Emperor's Coven showcase, one hour." Amity lifts her hand up as if to shake on it.
Luz confidently reacts and meets the hand. But before she could grasp it, Amity draws a spell circle between them before taking Luz's hand in a firm shake. She gives the confused Jedi a smug look. "The everlasting oath is sealed." Amity pulls her hand back, and the spell circle fades.
"What was that?!" Luz demanded as she looked at her glowing hand.
"A precaution that neither of us can back out, now," Amity explains. "Should either of us back out...well, you don't want to find out, do you?" She finished before walking away.
Luz watches Amity walk off like she owns the place. Along with several plans forming in her head.
"Oh, she's so going down. You got this, Luz!" King says as he eats his cupcake.
Tearing her gaze away from her upcoming opponent. Luz smiled down at the little demon. "Thanks, King. Let's go find Eda. I'm going to need her help with something before the match can start."
Eda weaves through the convention for the exit. Seeing her sister brought back a lot of past memories back she rather forgot.
"Sister? Is that you?" Said a familiar voice.
Eda turned and saw her sister signing a kid's poster. Lilith then walked over, the crowd of students following her. "I almost didn't recognize you, with that thing around your head." She said as she walked up to her sister. "What are you wearing, anyway? You look like a trash collector. Wait! It's because you are!" She and the students all giggled at Eda's expense.
But the Owl Lady wasn't one to not hold back any punches herself. "Oh, Lily, I just had to see the Leader of the Emperor's coven in action!" She emitted before crouching to the young witches. "You know, when we were kids, Lilith used to get so excited to see the Emperor's Coven, she peed a little!"
All the kids laughed while Lilith herself blushed in slight embarrassment and softly pushed the kids away. "That- that's all for today! Remember to keep practicing your magic!"
She turns back, giving her sister a stern look. "You shouldn't even be here. You're a wanted criminal! Unless..." She gasps, her eyes filling with hope and joy. "I don't believe it! You are here to join the Emperor's Coven!"
Any negative thoughts Eda had prior vanished as she chortles and laughs. "In your dreams."
Lilith did not take her answer kindly. "You think being coven-less makes you so much more intelligent than everyone else. But while you run from the law like a degenerate, I'm mentoring the next generation of powerful witch students into the world." She announced proudly.
The Owl lay fired back at her sister. "Well, I too have a student. And she is leagues above any blue blood student you've ever trained!" Eda boldly proclaimed.
"Is that a challenge?"
"Oh, it's a fact, sister," she answered.
At this moment, Luz had found Eda having a stare-down with Lilith.
"This can't be good," Luz said as she approached the two. "Hey, Eda."
The Witches turn, and the Owl Lady smiles smugly. "Speak of the titan. Here's my student now. Lilith, meet Luz, my student." Eda introduced as Luz stood beside her.
"Ma'am," Luz greeted before turning to her mentor. "Eda, I ran into a problem. I ran into Amity and challenged her into a duel, and I've got an hour to prepare. Going to need your help with this one."
"Well, fate seems to work in our favor today. Your student has just run into my top pupil." Lilith said before leaning closer to Luz and seeing her round ears. "And look at her ears, is she a human?" Luz gave Lilith a stern look as she continued. "Edalyn, where did you even find one of these?"
Her tone didn't go unnoticed with the Padawan but held her tongue from causing her to say anything she shouldn't. "Well, I don't know what you've been teaching Amity, but she better be bringing her A-game to the fight. She's going to need it," Luz told her.
Eda laughs and puts an arm around her student. "Here that Lily?! My student is about to go all out on your little pupil."
"I'll be sure to tell her," Lilith replied. She raised her hand and drew a spell circle. This caused all the wanted posters for Eda in the Convention center to burn to ash. "For one day, you won't have to hide from the law because I want to see how good your student really is." She then turns to walk away.
"Miss Lilith."
The Witch turns back to see that it was Luz that called her out. "Yes, human?"
"Make sure that you give Amity a weapon that can stand high amounts of heat. Otherwise, it will be a short match," Luz warns.
Luz could see the slight confusion in her eyes but said nothing and continued to walk. Most likely to search for her apprentice.
"Come on, kid. It's time for bloodshed," Eda declared as she patted Luz's shoulder.
"I don't know about that, but I do need you to grab some things at the house for me," Luz said.
She pulled the Witch in close and whispered into her pointed ear. A smile spread across her face. "Okay… I can do that for you, kiddo."
Later back in the arena, Lilith and Amity awaited for her opponent to appear.
While they wait, Amity gives the wooden staff with a metal ball at the end an odd look. It was a magic training staff that witches use for advance training purposes if they didn't have a Palisman of their own. Her mentor said she enchanted it for handling extreme heat. That confused the teen, and when asked, her mentor said not to worry.
Her thoughts didn't linger long as the Owl Lady and the human walked into the arena. The human also wore something different than before. Instead of the yellow hoodie, she had a brown cloak covering her down to her head to her knees, showing only a set of brown shin-high leather boots.
With both contenders present, Lilith started the show.
"Beloved citizens, the Emperor's Coven proudly presents an impromptu demonstration of the sort of Witches we seek every year. Introducing Amity Blight." The spotlight shone down on Amity as she stepped forward and gave a smug look as the crowd cheered for her.
"Versus… Some human girl." A spotlight showered down Luz.
The crowd started to murmur like a peanut gallery. Most of it is hostile towards the human.
"A human?"
"Humans can't do magic!"
"She's not Amity."
In the crowd, Gus and Willow looked worried at Luz. While the Jedi kept her head focused on her opponent.
"Alright, you ready, kid?" Eda asked Luz.
"I've fought on the ground in a dozen campaigns in the war, Eda." Luz reminded Eda. Taking off her Jedi cloak, she hands it over to the Owl lady, revealing her tan Jedi Padawan robes. One notable addition that she had was a white utility belt with her lightsaber hanging off. "I can take whatever Amity can throw at me."
Eda frowned at the reminder that Luz was basically a child soldier but perked back up to save face. "Alright, you got this, kid."
The Owl lady and her sister exit the ring together.
Luz looked up to see a bell… screaming. Signaling the duel to begin.
"That is remarkably creepy..." Luz commented.
Amity draws a large spell circle on the ground in front of them. Luz recognized the same spell that Principle Bump used, meaning one thing.
"Abomination, rise!" Amity said and summoned an abomination as tall as an AT-RT scout walker.
Slightly surprised by this event, Luz jumped back several feet to gain some distance. "Well, things just got interesting."
"Whoa." Amity looked slightly taken back by what she summoned before refocusing on the fight. "Show me what you got, human!"
The Padawan took one look at the summon and formed a plan on how to deal with it.
The abomination attacked with a stomp to crush Luz. The Jedi simply side steps to avoid it. When she tried to get some distance, the thing then twisted its head off and flung it at her. She responded by raising her hand and stopping dead in the air with the Force.
"WHAT?!" Amity screeched in shock. She wasn't the only one, as many in the stands watching reacted the same way. They deemed humans couldn't do magic, and yet, here's a human stopping an abomination attack without even touching it.
"How are you doing that?!" Amity demanded.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" Luz taunted before sending the severed purple head at the green-haired teen. Amity jumps out the way as the purple mush impacts the ground where she once stood.
"Abomination, attack!" Amity ordered as she picked herself up.
Luz waited for the blob monster to be upon her before responding. Using the Force to propel herself upwards, she landed right on that thing's shoulder. She then pulled out a thermal detonator from her belt and placed it in the abomination's still forming head. Jumping away and landing just a few feet from Amity, the blast for the detonator obliterated the blob monster into a messing purple and black mess.
Amity was again shocked by the human's actions. She shook it off and replaced it with anger as she readied her staff. Abomination goo floated in the air around her, ready to attack.
"I see you are ready to take me seriously now. Very well, prepare yourself." Luz grabs hold of the silver cylinder hanging on her belt, and a yellow blade of light appears.
The sight of the Jedi's lightsaber drew the crowd in. Marveling at what magic this human was procuring. Only two figures in the audience knew the truth behind the weapon and kept silent about its capabilities.
"I hope that training staff you gave to Miss Perfect can take the beating my kid will bring Lily, or this will be one short fight," Eda says to her sister with a smug look on her face. While Lilith looked at the lightsaber with unhinged shock.
'Where did a human get something like that?!' The coven head thought to herself.
Luz moved in close with her saber down, ready for a low to high slash. Her point was to disarm Amity and remove her weapon, not kill her. Moving in to attack, Luz had to abort the last second as Amity summoned a row of purple mesh spikes from the floor. Luz used a Force-assisted jump to go over the spikes and Amity to attack her from the rear. Amity redirected her abomination goo around her to act as both a shield and offense weapon. Luz was now on the backburner as Amity moves the purple goo to impale her with more spikes. Her foot then gets caught on something unseen. Looking down, she saw the purple goop wrapped around her leg. A moment later, more abomination goo rose around her with a pale face surrounded and encased her in a purple shell.
"Got you, human," Amity huffed. Her victory didn't last.
Luz didn't know if this would work or not but had little choice in the matter as she felt the goo pressed tightly around her, suffocating her. When the goo held tightly all around, Luz opened herself to the Force around her. Gathering the raw Force of the Isles into a bubble around her, she threw her hands out and unleashed it out like a Force wave.
The Abomination track student watched horrid fascination as the goo rippled like water before bursting out in a widespread splatter. Amity quickly covered her face from the shockwave and any incoming goo. When it was done, she saw Luz standing on shaky legs with her arms hanging down and that weapon still active.
Luz gulps the air around her like she had just got sucked out into space. The Force or wild magic or whatever it was that kept the Isles together was wildly intense. Those few seconds of tapping into it were more than enough to save her from being trapped, but now she nearly felt dead on her feet, suffering from Force exhaustion. Calming herself with a few steady breaths, she stood up straight to look at her opponent. Who looked back in disbelief.
Luz smiled and got back into a basic fighting stance, her smile never leaving her face. "That's all you got, Thin-mint?"
That snapped Amity out of her stupor, red face with anger brought up the abomination goo again and launched three lances at Luz. The Jedi had to dodge them, for they were too big to safely cut them out of the air. While she weaved through the attack, Amity was sitting idle and summoned another large abomination. Avoiding the last lance, Luz spotted Amity's next abomination changing towards her. Testing a thought, she pulled out one of her ion grenades and tossed it at the goop monster. It connected to the thing's head, and a moment later, blue arcs spread out all over it before it all collapsed with a gooey splat. Amity looked at the gooey pile in complete surprise before looking at Luz.
"What did you do?!" Amity shouted.
"Just seeing how abominations react to electromagnetic pulses." Luz looked down at her feet at the goo pooled around her feet. "Works quite well if I do say so myself."
Amity gritted her teeth in frustration and anger. This human was mocking her, making her look like a fool in front of the Emperor's Coven. Her future!
Amity screamed and formed a big spell circle. "Why won't you go down?!"
Luz raised her lightsaber and braced herself for whatever kind of abomination Amity was going to pull out next. With how big the spell looked; Amity was going to pull out all the stops on her. No one expected that instead of a title wave of abomination goop, it was a jet of light purple and pink flames. Luz went to move out of the way of the encroaching flames but found her movement impeded by the ankle-high abomination pool around her. Then she only had enough time to look up and see the fire hit her.
"LUZ!" King, Willow, and Gus shouted out. Scared and worried about the human. Eda was about ready to jump down and end the fight before Amity could kill her if it weren't for the magic shield projected around the ring.
The pink flames subsided, and Amity could only stare at her hands in fascinated horror. Amity didn't even mean for her to launch a wave of fire at the human. She didn't like her, but that didn't mean she wanted her dead! She was just branching out in pyro magic, barely even getting a simple flame with her training wand. How did she do that?
When the smoke cleared, they expected to see the charred remains of the human. What they got instead was a human still standing with her right hand up, raised up with her palm open as if she was signaling to stop as she stood defiantly. But the Jedi did not get out uninjured. Her robes from her arm sleeve to her shoulder and side were burnt away, revealing her once tan skin, pink and blistered. First and second-degree burns reached from her wrist to the base of her neck. Look even closer, and you see her cheek looked a little tender. Luz's ponytail had gotten loose with several brunt hairs at the end of her locks.
The people that knew her in the seats looked at their friend in various degrees of horror. Even others in the audience looked a little uncomfortable in seeing the human's physical state. Though, if anything, everyone watching was in awe at how the human was still standing.
The calm, steady breathing was the only thing Luz was concentrating on for the moment. That fire came WAY too close to ending her life. The hastily erected Force shield she put came too late, nor was it strong enough to fully protect her from the magic fire. Who knew Amity had something like that up her sleeve?
Opening her eyes, she could see Amity standing right where she was when she launched the attack. Looking at her in disbelief and shaky hands.
"I must be quite a sight?" Luz said softly. She pried her feet out of the hardening abomination goo. The Jedi walked calmly in the direction of her opponent. Amity looked like she was about to bolt.
"You work hard," Luz continues. "You gain power. You claim status. Then when someone comes along and mixes up the status quo, you burn them..." Her voice lingers in the air.
The words reached Amity and made her body shiver. She wanted to move away from the approaching human but found herself rooted in place as the human talked. When she was close enough, Luz swung her lightsaber hard in Amity's direction.
The green hair Witch barely had time to raise her training staff to intercept the plasma blade. Which was Luz's original target.
The Training staff flew out of Amity's hand, and before she knew it, that yellow blade of light was next to her head. Golden eyes stared into brown.
"Now you have a choice, Amity. Be stuck in the past and be lost while everyone moves on. Or change to be better than where you are now and have a future?"
"...I yield."
The audience was completely shocked by what they had seen. Luz won. And so, the audience roars with cheers for Luz. Which was ignored by the combatants as Luz turned off her lightsaber. Then she smiled again.
"That was a good fight. Be proud of yourself..." She then fell to her knees. Amity surprised herself as she caught the human within her arms and held her. "Ow..."
Amity twitched a bit at the pain. "Umm. Sorry...?" The small apology made the Jedi giggle.
"Don't be… as I said, it was a good fight. You are a strong opponent, Amity Blight… Let no one dissuade you otherwise." Luz said between breaths.
Luz couldn't see it, but Amity blushed a little at the compliment. Before they continued, Eda arrived and crouched by Luz's side.
"Dang, kid. You had me worried up there a few times." Eda reaches into her hair and pulls out some medical gauze before wrapping up Luz's burn arm.
"Amity sure surprised me today," Luz admitted before glancing up at the girl. "Could have used your power back in the Clone Wars."
"Thanks?" Amity said, unsure of what Luz was talking about. It might have been some human event for all Amity knew.
Luz's lightsaber then had a blue glow surrounding it before it flew out of her hand.
"Hey!" the Jedi reacted.
Everyone watched as the Jedi tool floated away then ended up in Lilith's hands.
"Lilith! What are you doing?" Eda demanded.
"This is a dangerous weapon. It should not be in the hands of a child," Lilith said emotionlessly.
Luz tried to reach out to her weapon using the Force but found herself too weak to concentrate. "No..."
Out of nowhere, Owlbert, Eda's Palisman, came swooping in from above and grabbing the lightsaber out of Lilith's hands. The wooden bird flew over and dropped it into Eda's awaiting hands.
"Why Lily, I can't decide to be disappointed or proud you tried to steal from a young girl," Eda says as Owlbert lands back on Eda's staff. "But I don't appreciate that you're stealing from my apprentice."
"She only won because she had such a dangerous weapon." Lilith ready her staff to fight. "Surrender it now."
"Eda, I don't think she's going to budge on this," Luz said as she helped herself off the ground.
"Mumm… I think you're right again on this kid." Eda spins her staff and smacks its bottom into the ground, and a wall erects in between them and Lilith. She then tosses Luz her lightsaber back and turns to address Amity. "Hey, Miss Perfect. Would you take Luz over to the Healing Coven? I need to have a chat with my sister."
Amity dumbly nods and drags Luz out of the arena. Not wanting to mess with the powerful wild Witch. The two walked/limped in silence for a minute before they reached the Healing Coven. When the Healers saw Luz's state, they rushed to the human's aid.
Luz's burns were all wrapped up and had a few blue healing patches on at a speed that would impress many healers among the Jedi. Raising her burnt arm and softly flexing her muscles for responses. This hadn't been the first time Luz had been injured in combat, but it was the first time she had been burned with fire. From what she was feeling, she was going to be tender for a while.
Not too far away, Luz could see Amity by herself against a wall with her arms crossed and her head down. Her face bearing a look of one in deep thought. Getting up after the Healers left, she approached her fellow teen.
"Surprised that you're still here," Luz said and stood in front of Amity. "Thought you were going home after today's excitement."
"You could have killed me at will."
Her response was blunt. It made Luz halt in her tracks and looked at the Abomination Track student with a confused raised eyebrow. "Pardon?"
Amity leveled a glare at her. "The match. The way you fought and handled it, along with those strange powers and your weapon. You could have killed me at any time, so why didn't you?" She said with an accusing finger pointing at Luz's face.
Now Luz was perplexed. "Do you want to die?!"
"NO!" Amity shouted.
"Then what's the problem?" Luz asked.
"My problem is you!" Amity steps forward. Now in Luz's face. "You embarrassed me in front of the Emperor's Coven. My future! They don't take in people who give up in a fight..." Amity steps away before her back hits the wall and slides down. A look of defeat gracing her face. "I worked my whole life for that, and now it's gone due to losing one duel to a random human."
"Then Kriff 'em."
Amity looked confusingly at the human and flinched at the look she was receiving. "What?"
"Kriff. Them." Luz repeated as she got down to Witch's level. "Amity, I'll tell you right now. If those Emperor guys don't see how talented you are or the hard work you put in to be as strong as you are now. Then they don't deserve your loyalty. They don't deserve you."
"And what would you know about that?" Amity shot back. "Do you have an idea what it's like to have hundreds of expectations thrown at you by people?"
A dark shadow seemed to fall over the young Jedi. "Expectations, no. Results, however? Too many to count." Her answer throws Amity in a loop.
"What?"
Luz sits next to her and tries to explain. "There's so much that you don't know about my realm. Much of it goes unheard of from what I've seen. As for me and what I've been through... I've had worlds worth of expectations and images to live up to. But in the end? It's only about the results we give that carry us on."
"For example, I can't do magic the same way all of you can." Luz pulls out a notepad and pencil. Amity looks confused as she looks down at the notepad. Luz slowly draws out the light glyph, then taps it. She cups the ball of light produced, smiling at it. Then, she holds it up for Amity to see.
"Anyone can put expectations on you. It's the results that you produce that will see you through."
Amity stares at the light in awe but then turns away. "That's nothing. A kid could do a light spell. But... I've never seen it cast like that before.
"It's a work in progress," Luz admits, then grabs the magic light to disappear. "But it proves my point. Expectations come and go. It's our hard work that will put us through the challenges we face everyday… That is if that everlasting oath would affect you in any way."
A moment of silence passed before Amity spoke. "Give me your hand..." Luz did, and Amity drew another spell circle around their hands, making them glow before it disappeared. "The oath is unbound. We can now go about our respective lives." She lets go of the hand and begins to leave.
Luz was about to say goodbye, but something on Amity's neck distracted her. "Hey, what's that on your neck?" She asked as she got up to Amity.
The out of nowhere question confused the teen. "What are you talking about? There's nothing on my..." She stopped when Luz reached around and pulled something off her neck. A power glyph from the Construction Coven. "W-what? How?!" Then it came to her. "Miss Lilith!"
"Eda's sister?" Luz looked at the power glyph before crushing it in her hand. "She mustn't like humans much."
"I didn't know! I would never use something like this to win!" Amity pleaded, backing away from Luz in fear. Luz, on the other hand, looked confused.
"Using one of these is cheating?" The Padawan just tosses the glyph in a trash bin. "Then the world will never know."
Amity was once again stunned by the human's actions. She put her head down, for she could not meet Luz's eyes. "Thank you..." She said before leaving.
Luz had a small smile. Maybe there was hope for that girl yet.
"Luz! There you are!" King shouted as he came running towards her.
"Sorry, I had a talk with Amity for a bit." Luz noticed all the "offerings" King had on him. "Got enough souvenirs there, buddy?"
"Yeah, but I also got something for you too!" King said as he pulled something out for Luz, a bag with "Convention" on it. "A tote bag!"
The Jedi smiled softly at the item and took it. "Thanks, King."
The little demon then hopped in it. "And look, it doubles as a chariot! Away, golden chariot! Away!"
Luz pats his head just as Eda arrives. "We gotta go."
"How'd the fight with your sister go?" Luz asked.
"It was good. I'd won. Now let's go home. Today has been tiring." Eda shortly explained.
The three started moving towards the exit.
A stray thought enters the young Jedi's mind. "Hey, Eda?"
"Mm?" The Witch glances her way.
"Do you think I'll ever be a true witch?" She asked.
The Owl Lady snorted at the question. "I don't know. And who's a true witch? These suckers? According to them, that means being in a coven, but I never joined one, and look at me. I'm better than all of them together. You gotta be your own Witch."
"My own Witch..."
"What brought this out?"
Luz brought her lightsaber hilt out. "I never completed my Jedi training. Neither did I finish all my trials for knighthood." She glances down at her Padawan braid wrapped in a yellow and red band. "Would I even be a good Witch in my own way?"
"A good witch? Who knows? A Witch in your own way? Definitely," Eda said proudly. "You've already taken the first steps. Do you wanna finish what you already started?"
Luz smiled at Eda. Thankful that she met the woman. "Yeah, I want to. Thanks, Eda."
"You're welcome. Now let's scram before Lilith finds out I tied her shoelaces together," Eda said. Right then, an angry scream was heard where she came from.
"I think we're too late," Luz said before the three exited the convention. A banner saying "COME BACK SOON! WE'LL GET YOU EVENTUALLY!" hung over it.
"So… Sister, huh?" Luz said.
"Yep," Eda replied.
"Any other crazy family member I should know about?" She asked.
Eda gave a little laugh. "Oh, just wait until you hear about my parents."
"Trust me. You don't want to," King said.
So a lot of things in the world that's pissing me off. Work being one of them. Taliban taking over Afghanistan, overthrowing the government, making this look like the end of Vietnam all over again. High gas prices.
Makes for good conversation you know.
Anyway, back to the story. Apologize for any errors in the chapter.
