Um…hi guys. It's been SO LONG as in YEARS since I uploaded to this story. Now the main book has been complete for a while but I promised you guys an epilogue and I never delivered. For that I am truly sorry. Truth is, I actually had 1/3 of this written since maybe 2 months after the extra chapter update. It's just been sitting in my files unfinished because I could not for the life of me figure out what I wanted to do for the epilogue. I'll admit some of it is similar to the last chapter but hockey and figure skating are such a big part of this story so I thought you know whatever I like it. I really hope you guys do too. I always knew I would come back to this story because I promised. Alright I won't make you wait any longer so without further ado, here's the final update aka THE EPILOGUE OF THE RINK!
Disclaimer: Don't own
Annabeth stared down at the young girl before her as she sighed in frustration, grudgingly getting back up and rubbing the flakes of snow from the ice that had accumulated on her leggings.
"It's hopeless Mom. I'm never going to land it." The girl said angrily, her face colored red from the crisp winter air that surrounded them.
Annabeth placed a hand on her daughters' shoulder, brushing aside her blond hair. "You will Aspen, I promise. It just takes practice. How many times do you think I fell before I landed my first double axel?" She told her encouragingly.
"Hard to imagine you falling that often. All those shiny gold and silver medals you have. I…I just wanna be as good as you." She replied, looking down at her feet on the ice wishfully.
Annabeth felt her heart warm.
Eight-year-old Aspen Jackson was one of the best things in her life. Almost as soon as she started walking, she'd been figure skating and the young girl loved it just as much as her mother. Annabeth never wanted to be the type of parent who forced her children into sports when they didn't want to be an athlete. In Aspen's case, the first time they had ever gone ice skating for fun the little girl had taken to it immediately and since then Annabeth had been teaching her. Not long after they'd started practicing together, Aspen joined a youth team over at the all too famous ice rink she had once skated for.
Christina was still coaching the young figure skaters there and after a heartfelt reunion, Annabeth was offered to coach alongside her. Needless to say, she accepted and helped with training all the skaters from ages 5 to 18.
Aspen got quite a lot of attention during the practices seeing as her mother was a retired Olympic gold medalist figure skater. The younger girl didn't seem to mind it one bit.
In terms of physical appearance, Aspen had long blond hair like Annabeth and striking sea green eyes just like her father. Besides figure skating, she loved watching hockey on TV (it was a weekly tradition in the Jackson household), reading, and drawing.
Annabeth crouched down, squatting in front of her daughter on the ice. "You want to know what I think?"
Aspen met her mother's gaze, nodding soundly.
"I think you'll be an even better skater. I didn't even start skating till I was 9 and you've already been skating for years! You've got more potential than you know." Annabeth said, squeezing her hand gently.
Aspen smiled shyly. "Really?"
"Really" Annabeth confirmed.
"Now come on, let's go make sure the boys haven't completely scratched up the other half of the ice."
Aspen laughed and skated next to mother with newfound confidence. They started on their way over to the other half of the frozen lake and were met with the sight of two males skating quite frantically and trying to dodge one another. Each one had a hockey stick, and one puck was shuffling back and forth between them. The older of the two was currently in control of the puck as the younger boy tried to get it from him. The sounds of the ice crunching beneath their bulky hockey skates filled their ears.
Annabeth smiled as she took in the scene. Her husband grinned smugly as he kept the puck under his control, trying to bypass his son who was putting up quite a fight. Both sets of eyes were focused so closely on the puck as they tried to move towards the goal set up. Neither one of the males had noticed them. Deciding to help her brother out, Aspen spoke up.
"Dad!" Aspen yelled. Her father immediately lifted his head up, looking around curiously for the source of the voice that had called him.
In a split second the younger boy stole the hockey puck away, skating down towards the goal. Realizing what was happening, Percy immediately went back into hockey mode. He tried his best to catch up with his son but it was too late, the black puck hit the back of the goal and the younger boy cheered in victory.
"Too slow dad!" He yelled as he skated back towards them from the goal.
When he reached them, he fist bumped Aspen, who laughed at the expression of mock hurt on her father's face. "Thanks little sis"
Aspen rolled her eyes, just like her mother seemed to do on a daily basis. "How many times do we have to go over this Colden? We're twins. Born on the same day. We're the same age."
Colden laughed. "Yeah except that I'm three minutes older. Which makes you my little sister."
Aspen shoved her brother's shoulder lightly in response. Annabeth watched the entire exchange, shaking her head at their antics with a smile on her face.
Colden Jackson was the complete opposite of Aspen Jackson. He had messy black hair and grey eyes. Instead of figure skating his favorite thing in the world was hockey. Percy was beyond ecstatic when Colden started playing on his old youth league called the Tidal Waves at the rink. The two of them could spend hours talking about hockey. Percy had practically educated him on all there is to know about the sport even though he was only eight.
Similar to how Aspen got attention for being the daughter of an Olympian, Colden got stares at the rink for having a father in the NHL. Outside of the rink when they were all together it was even more intense. Cameras followed their family everywhere, but they'd learned to live with it. As long as they had each other.
Percy made his way over to his wife, shaking his head in mock disappointment. "You told her to do that didn't you?" He asked once he reached her, coming to an abrupt stop in his hockey skates.
Annabeth laughed. "Oh, how I wish I could take the credit but no, that was all your daughter's idea"
Percy looked towards where the younger girl was standing, an eyebrow raised in question. Aspen smiled and nodded her head in confirmation as Colden laughed.
Percy cast them all a glance of mock hurt, placing a hand to his heart dramatically. "You know I'm getting really tired of being the target in this family. There's only so much a guy can take." He continued, pretending to make his voice sound emotional.
Annabeth rolled her eyes at his ridiculous antics. He had been spending way too much time with Leo Valdez lately.
"I think I'll just go find the one person who won't plot against me." Percy said, skating a little further down the frozen lake before meeting up with a line of three people skating. Two adult men with a little girl holding each of their hands in the middle.
The little girl's face lit up when she realized who had come to join them.
"Daddy!" She squealed in delight before releasing the hands of the two people next to her and skating steadily over to her father in her white figure skates and a youth sized hockey jersey that reached her knees.
Percy felt his heart warm with delight as he bent down to be at eye level with his youngest daughter before pulling her into a hug. She giggled as he squeezed her tight.
"I am in desperate need of a little Noelle magic right now." He said once they pulled away.
The small child smiled and reached up to place a small peck to her father's cheek. "All better?" She asked afterwards.
Percy smiled gratefully, leaning down and placing a small kiss on her forehead. "All better"
Noelle Jackson was the youngest of the Jackson family being only four years old. She had curly hair like her mother, but it was a dark brown color. Her eyes were almost the same shade of green as her father's but slightly lighter. She was adored by just about everyone she met but her favorite person in the whole world was her father. Annabeth knew from the minute her husband had carried her in his arms that the two of them would be inseparable. Noelle enjoyed both figure skating and hockey, but she hadn't shown a preference toward either one. She was still really young, but Percy and Annabeth would not mind it one bit if she'd kept skating as just a hobby and pursued something else.
"Hey, Jackson" Percy heard a voice call to get his attention. He looked behind Noelle to see two men struggling very hard to keep their balance on the ice, hanging on to each other for dear life as they stumbled around in their figure skates.
"In case you haven't noticed we're currently trying not to die over here." Will Solace stated dramatically, slipping before catching himself once again.
"Yeah, we need the kid." The other male, Nico di Angelo added.
Percy laughed at the two men before him. "Are you serious?"
Noelle jumped in before either of them could answer. "It's true. They fell like a billion times before we decided to all skate together." She whispered the last part only loud enough for her father to hear.
"A billion times huh?" Percy asked with a small smile of amusement on his face.
Noelle nodded vigorously in response. "It was bad"
Percy laughed once more, shaking his head and standing upright once again to grab his daughter's hand and bring her towards the two struggling males.
"Well alright then. Don't want to disrupt this lesson." He said coyly, letting go of Noelle's hand so she could grab each of Will and Nico's. Nico glared at him before grabbing her little hand, a look of relief flashed across both of their faces once she was reunited with them in a line.
"Bye Daddy!" The four-year-old said happily.
Percy smiled, waving gently in her direction. "Bye squirt"
Before he could even get ten feet away he was approached by another familiar face. Seven-year-old Maddie Grace was Jason and Piper's daughter. She had dirty blond hair and blue eyes. She was one of the most intelligent seven-year old's Percy had ever met. All that girl did was bury her nose in a book, well, if she wasn't playing hockey that is. She was practically playing the game before she could walk.
Maddie and Colden played on the same youth hockey league together. And even though the two of them constantly bickered and butt heads, they were the closest of friends. Maddie was a year younger but that didn't stop her from showing Colden up every chance she got and high fiving Aspen when she did.
"Uncle Percy please tell Colden that mouth guards are not required for the NHL" Maddie voiced, coming to an abrupt stop in front of him.
"Yes they are! All the players wear them!" Colden argued, coming up next to her.
"Well yeah, I mean it's smart to but they're not required!" She spat in a tone that was obvious.
"Dad, tell her they're required" Colden said, turning to face his father as well.
Percy sighed, shaking his head at the two of them and their love-hate relationship. "Well technically…they're not mandated, meaning the NHL doesn't force you to wear one but yes, most of us still wear them as an extra layer of protection"
"Ha! I told you!" Maddie stated. Colden's only response was to stick his tongue out at her.
Percy left the two of them to their bickering, skating over towards his wife who was engaged in conversation with Leo and Calypso Valdez. Once she saw him her eyes lit up, he smiled back in return and joined the small circle, coming up behind Annabeth to wrap his arms around her as he listened to the end of her sentence.
"Can't wait to meet him." He heard her say as she gripped his hands in front of her and leant back into his embrace.
"Meet who?" Percy asked confusedly.
"This super attractive dude from work that has the hots for Annabeth after seeing her in a group photo." Leo explained.
"What?! Who is he? What's his name?" Percy almost immediately shouted in response as Calypso smacked her husband over the head.
"Jealous much? Jeez Perce it's just too easy with you." Leo laughed teasingly and Percy glared at him.
Annabeth rolled her eyes. "We're talking about the baby obviously." She said, gesturing to Calypso's pregnant stomach that was six and a half months along.
Percy let out a small sigh of relief, smiling as he looked down at the baby bump.
"I just want him out already. I have to pee every five seconds and it's a struggle just to tie my shoes now" Calypso complained with a frustrated tone, staring down at her stomach.
Annabeth laughed. "It'll be worth it, trust me."
"Yeah, and when he does come, I'll be finding the worlds smallest goalie helmet for him." Leo added excitedly.
Calypso rolled her eyes, making eye contact with Annabeth and Percy once again. "Leo has this theory that our son is going to be the best hockey goalie in the U.S." She supplied.
"Oh, it's not a theory it's a fact. He's goalie material…I can sense it." Leo responded, placing a hand over Calypso's stomach as he whispered the last part dramatically.
"Yeah, yeah come on. Let's go take a seat on the bench. My back's starting to hurt from carrying your spawn." Calypso said, gripping his arm as they made their way off the ice.
Annabeth laughed at the way Leo hastily cleared every tiny obstacle that could possibly be in their way in order for her to get across to the bench. She knew Calypso secretly loved having him practically worship the ground she walked on as she carried their child. Annabeth's mind flashed back to when Percy acted like her getting a paper cut was the end of the world when she was pregnant with Noelle.
"What are you laughing at?" She heard his voice say closer to her ear this time. She leant further back into his hold and he tightened his arms around her to pull her closer. After all this time she still got butterflies when she was around him.
"Just happy" She replied, closing her eyes momentarily and enjoying the crisp wind on her skin.
"Yeah?" Percy asked, kissing her cheek lightly from behind.
"Mmm" She hummed in response.
They stayed like that for a couple seconds before she felt him get impatient, nudging her neck playfully with his nose and tickling her collarbone. She giggled and sighed, turning around in his hold and leaning in to kiss him briefly. He smiled into the kiss, wrapping his arms around her waist as she placed hers on his shoulders.
The kiss was short-lived as they felt a small figure come crashing into their legs. Once they pulled apart Percy looked down to see their youngest daughter gripping his leg and laughing soundly.
"Tag! You're it!" She exclaimed excitedly.
Percy smiled, getting a mischievous look in his eye that Annabeth knew all too well. "Me? You sure you want to make me it squirt?"
Noelle nodded, beginning the skate away from him as Percy gave his wife one more chaste kiss before chasing after her. Noelle screamed as he got closer to her in a matter of seconds. He tapped her shoulder after a minute, making her it.
Noelle huffed, skating towards her father with a look of determination on her face. She tried her very best, but she couldn't seem to catch him. Aspen and Colden noticed what was going on and decided to help out their little sister. They moved to opposite ends of the frozen lake in an attempt to corner their father. Before Percy even realized they ganged up on him he was being pushed to the ground by three bodies.
Annabeth laughed soundly as she watched her husband get tackled to the ground by Aspen, Noelle, and Colden. They piled on top of him and he pretended to be dying, causing the children to laugh. She could see the giant smile on his face from a mile away. He was a great father.
"Dinner's ready!" Percy heard his mother and Annabeth shout in unison from the kitchen up into the household where everyone was either in their rooms or talking in the living room after having come back from skating the past few hours on the frozen lake near the Jackson house.
Not long after they had come back Sally Jackson had shown up at the house with multiple bags of ingredients and shared a knowing look with Annabeth. When Percy tried to offer his help to make dinner the two women quite literally shoved him out of the kitchen and he hadn't heard from them since. He wasn't stupid, he knew what the secrecy implied when it came to one of his favorite food dishes. At least he was pretty sure.
Annabeth heard the stampede of footsteps barrel down the main staircase of their home, a line of children coming down from the upstairs level of the house followed by a barking dog.
Delilah was their one-year-old grey Newfoundland dog. After years of begging from the children (and Percy as well), Annabeth had finally agreed to getting a family dog. Don't get her wrong she loved animals, the reason she had been hesitant was because she felt like she was going to be the one doing all the work. Needless to say, she was pleasantly surprised when Noelle took to being a dog owner quite fast. They all adored Delilah, but Noelle loved that dog more than any toy or game she had and spent all her time with her when they were home. It was adorable especially because the dog was bigger than her.
Noelle made it down the stairs first, hastily running over to the pantry to give Delilah her dinner as well.
Percy made it into her view next, coming from the living room with Leo, Calypso, Nico, Will, Jason, Piper, Frank, Hazel, and Thalia in tow. They had a full house tonight. Usually there was at least one time every month that they all got together at one of their houses and today it was the Jackson's turn to host.
Jason and Piper offered to set the table quickly as everyone started coming into the dining area. The two of them had just arrived a few minutes prior. They knew the house as well as their own because one of them was usually picking up Maddie from their house almost every day.
"Should we set a place for your mom Annabeth?" Piper asked from a couple feet away.
Annabeth shook her head. "No she can't make it tonight, she's going to stop by later this week." Piper nodded and finished up the last spot at the table.
Things with Athena Chase and Annabeth had definitely changed over the years. Their relationship would never be sunshine and rainbows they both knew that, but after several conversations, tears, and Athena apologizing for doubting Annabeth's career goals, they had reached a good place. It's not perfect but what family is? She would never forget how Athena was growing up but at the end of the day Annabeth decided that she wanted her mother to be a part of her children's lives and Athena absolutely adored them.
She saw Thalia grab a couple of the side dishes with Hazel and Frank to set down before taking a seat at the table. Now Thalia was another story. If there was a definition for the phrase 'cool aunt' in the dictionary it would be Thalia. The kids practically saw her as a goddess. When she wasn't traveling for work she was riding her motorcycle or going to rock n roll concerts. It wasn't a coincidence that Aspen had recently started painting her nails in random color patterns like Thalia did. It was only a matter of time before she expected one of her children to beg for a black leather jacket like their Aunt Thalia has.
Hazel and Frank had become good friends with their group over the years as well. Percy's two closest friends from college had a baby girl named Ariel who the babysitter was watching that night. Annabeth was sure that in no time at all that baby would be joining them for their monthly dinners and making friends with their kids. Same goes for Leo and Calypso's baby boy that was due soon. She just hoped there was enough space at the table. They were a big gang.
Annabeth smiled gratefully in return once the table was set and turned around to grab the main dish and set it down. However, someone had beat her to it. Standing in front of her basically drooling while holding the large bowl was her idiot of a husband. Years had gone by and the male still had no clue what addicting substance was put into the sauce of the all too famous Jackson family recipe. Once Annabeth had married into the family obviously Sally had given her the recipe which against all his efforts, Percy had not managed to get out of her. Annabeth heard excited cheers when the kids laid eyes on the food in his hands as well.
"Ravioli!"
Percy immediately took his seat at the large table, dumping about three servings onto his plate of the Italian dish before passing it around to the others reaching out for it. This is why they always had to make extra. Annabeth saw Percy's eyes light up as he sprinkled some cheese on top of his ravioli. She laughed to herself and sat next to him at the table. He was basically a child himself.
Percy turned to her, a grin on his face the size of Manhattan. "What?"
Annabeth shook her head. "Nothing"
Percy gripped her hand under the table, pulling her into a quick kiss as everyone was distracted by the food. "I love you Princess"
Annabeth's heart melted at those words, and she hated herself for how cringy that sounded but it was the truth. "I love you too Hockey Boy"
She leaned in to give him one last quick peck. When their lips were a centimeter away, she whispered into the air between them.
"But you're still not getting the recipe"
The End
So what did you guys think? I don't even know how many of you still read my writing to be honest it's been so long it's crazy but hopefully a few of you out there got some more closure on the story! There are probably more unanswered questions that I didn't address but I tried my best to get as many loose ends tied up as I could. The whole mother daughter relationship with Athena and Annabeth I was struggling with because I really didn't know what to say. It's not the best but I didn't want to spend too much time on it, this epilogue was mainly focused on the kids. I absolutely adore Noelle she's my favorite! And the ravioli recipe did you guys think I forgot that iconic part of the story? It was just a joke at first but I got so many reviews from people when I wrote the ravioli chapter so long ago saying how much they loved that cute little aspect of the story, so I kept it around :)
I'm going upload an author's note after this update because so many things have happened in my life since I last wrote for you guys and I also just want to thank you guys and explain how much you mean to me (cue the violins). It will be uploaded sometime later this week (I won't make you wait years again). But I also want to know what's new in all of your lives! Please hit that review button because I missed you all so much!
