Chapter 24: Should I Be A Doctor?
"So, this is it?" the dark-haired doctor mused, leaning casually against the wall of the darkened on call room. His eyes so blue, brightening the room as well as the direction his gaze could not seem to break from the young intern. Intern. Cross that. Resident. She was a resident now, having new responsibilities, new interns and new problems to struggle on her first day of the beginning of the second year.
She looked confused, uncertain, but there held a tiny bit of hope in her eyes.
"I guess it is." she shrugged, her glassy green eyes blinking rapidly for a brief second before looking down on the floor where her shoes were unlaced.
Sighing, he shook his head finding the whole situation rather amusing, causing the woman who haunted his dreams and invaded his thoughts throughout the day to look up at him in confusion.
"What?" she asked, breathing out slowly.
"You know what you want." he stated with a small smile forming on his lips.
"W...what?"
"I'm not Burke and you're not Tina, although you think you are alike you are not the same. You know what you want, and I know what I want. You see your best friend being left at the altar and you see us becoming a mirror image of them...Mary...I'm not him. I'm Dirk, your McDreamy. I want to spend 108 years with you writing crossword puzzles and watching your mouth open while you snore. I want to walk hand in hand with you as we come into work and kiss hello. I only want the one girl I met at the bar and took advantage of, and yes Mary, I admit it. I want you. So, this is not it."
"I should be a doctor." Meredith whispered, her head lying on Derek's lap as they watched the television screen playing a repeat of Grace's Anatomy season four.
Chuckling he kissed the top of her head, eyeing his now broken cell phone he placed on the night stand next to the bed. "And why is that?" he asked, his mood lightening now having Meredith talk voluntarily rather than have him coax it out of her.
"So you can take me to on call rooms and tell me all those things." she whispered with a faint smile on her face.
"Oh yeah?" he mused. "I think it is a great idea. We can work together and be with one another every day for the rest of our lives."
"But then I would have to go to school." she whined, giggling lightly as she rubbed her nose, careful not to touch the small wound that was healing on her cheek.
"Well school is a given if you want to become a doctor Mer."
"Can't you just put in a good word for me?" she asked hopeful.
"I don't think that would be good once you would have to save lives."
"That sucks."
"That sucks indeed." he chuckled watching her pout although she was facing the other direction. "But you're young and passionate. You can do it if you want to." he insisted.
"No I can't."
"Yes you can."
"No I can't."
"Yes, and that is final. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise."
"I can do it." she finally whispered softly, loud enough
