***Trigger warning: This chapter briefly mentions sexual assault and accusations of SA.***

Welcome back! Didn't expect another update so early did ya?

This chapter focuses on Obito and Kakashi. It is a deep dive into Kakashi's mind set. What causes him to be so jealous and overprotective. Is it really about protecting Katsumi from Obito? Or is it about something else?

His mindset may be extreme but what he really needs is some perspective. We all do things we regret when we feel powerless to change.

This chapter is beta'd by the amazing katydid001, without her this story would be nothing 3

Kakashi sat up in bed as he heard Katsumi leave for her early morning mission. He was off duty that day but he didn't bother to attempt a conversation with her. The twin's relationship had been strained since their birthday. They still spoke to each other and ate meals together, but there was underlying tension. Neither of them had the heart to approach the subject, for fear of severing their relationship completely. He pushed himself up from the bed and reluctantly pulled his clothes on. It was too early for Gai's fierce energy and he didn't have the motivation to train alone as he should.

The male twin donned his vest and trudged down the stairs to make himself some slap dash breakfast. He longed for the days when he and his sister were on better terms and he would find a hot meal waiting on the kitchen bench. Today, he was met with the sight of a cold, empty kitchen. Maybe he was a tad spoiled by Katsumi's old habits? Deep down he knew this was punishment for the fight they had months ago. One day he would suck up his pride and apologise, but why did he have to? All he was trying to do was protect her. Protect your sister… his father's last words to him echoed in his mind. Yeah, Pa, I'm trying… he thought with a bitter frown. If only he was still around to give him some real advice, maybe he would stop pushing her away when all he wanted was to keep her close.

The disgruntled shinobi plucked an apple from the fruit bowl and packed himself a few rations as he wallowed in his thoughts. As he bit into the sweet fruit, he thought about going to bother Rin and give her some company as she finished up her graveyard shift.

Rin was the type of person to listen to everything and give him brutal advice, even when he didn't want it. There was something so refreshing about her. Maybe it was her song like laugh or her sunshine smile? Maybe it was her blunt honesty and insight into things that he could never understand? On second thought, perhaps it wasn't a good idea to go to her and talk about this problem again. She was probably sick of it by now. But he brushed aside his uncertainty because it didn't matter, at that moment she was the person he needed to talk to.

He finished his food before nodding at his plan. Tossing the core in the compost bin he made his way out of the house, locking the door behind him. With a deep breath he took to the rooftops making his way to the hospital. It didn't take long before he arrived, slipping silently through the entrance on his path to Rin's office door. Even though she had gone up in the medical ranks, she still occupied the same small office she always had. He gave a gentle tap on the door and let himself in when he heard her tired greeting.

"Oh, Kakashi-kun, off duty today?" she asked, her voice quiet and tender, still adapted to the volume she used on her rounds.

"Yeah, just thought you could use some company before you clocked off." He dragged the spare stool to the side of her desk and sat out of her way.

Rin offered an understanding smile as she continued to check over the shift paperwork. She scrawled delicate numbers and long words that meant nothing to Kakashi. He watched her work all the same. The brunette looked up once more and said, "So, you and Katsumi-chan haven't made up yet?"

The loaded question rattled him. He sucked in a deep breath and scowled under his dark mask. "Am I that easy to read?"

"Yes." she replied simply as she studied his body language. "You know what the fight is about, you need to apologise."

"Why do I need to apologise? I'm the one trying to keep her safe. If it wasn't for dobe, then we wouldn't be in this mess," his tone became hostile. And thus started the same argument they had had so many times since the sibling's fight. One part of him was confident he was in the right, but a little voice in the back of his mind told him he was doing more harm than good. Of course he ignored that little voice and stood stubborn in his resolve.

"Come on, Kakashi-kun, we have been over this. Obito-kun and Katsumi-chan have been in love forever, their life together is a given. You were doing so well there for a few years, but you have slipped back into those bad habits. You need to accept them, because it is already eating away at you. You'll have no sister if you keep doing this." Rin was tired and at the end of her tether, her usual calm demeanor was slipping. Shewas growing weary of Kakashi's behaviour. Not only was his sister all he could talk about, but when Rin had made attempts to cultivate their relationship into something more, he was always too distracted to notice. It had worn her down to the bone.

"Why does everyone say that?" Kakashi rolled his eyes and crossed his arms like a child. "Katsumi is too young to be so caught up in this shit. I know Obito is going to hurt her one day and I just can't stand it."

Rin had had enough. She slammed her brush down on the desk and met his fiery gaze with her own fury. "And why are you your sister's keeper?" She stabbed a finger at him. "The way you try to control her is borderline sexist and honestly, Kakashi-kun, I thought you were better than that. You and Obito-kun have your problems but he has only ever been kind to you. He just wants to protect your sister and he is doing a waaaay better job of it than you are."

Kakashi choked on his own spit as his boil boiled. "How could you say that?! I have spent all my life looking after her and I get it slammed in my face because of some Uchiha asshole?"

"You are the asshole right now, Kakashi! I can't believe you!" Rin grit her teeth and threw her hands in the air in frustration. "I am so glad Katsumi-chan has Obito-kun because at least he asks what she wants and never makes decisions for her. I cannot believe that I am here fighting for your sister's autonomy! Your behaviour is disgusting."

"Oh? And how would you feel if you were in my place, huh? I promised to keep her safe. Now I'm just here waiting for that pervert to take advantage of my sister? No one even grasps the danger she's in." he spat with venom. This fight was futile, he knew where Rin stood on the matter but he refused to believe that he was the one in the wrong. A tiny part of him hoped she may finally understand.

Rin shook her head and gave an incredulous laugh. "Take advantage? It's called consent, Kakashi-kun and I can't believe you still think your little sister is still a virgin," she stated matter-of-factly. "You must be so caught up in your own bullshit that you haven't even noticed."

Kakashi froze as her words spun like a tornado in his mind. Still a virgin? She's… not.. virgin?!

Rin's stomach sank and she knew she had said too much. She cursed the slip-up as she watched Kakashi unravel in front of her. One of his grey eyes began to twitch as his gaze bore a hole in the floor.

"Kakashi-kun, whatever you are thinking-" She was cut off by his intense snarl.

Kakashi stood without a word and stalked to the door, waves of killing intent rolling off of his shoulders.

Rin opened her mouth to call out to him but he was gone before she could even take a breath, the door slamming violently in his wake. Her blood ran cold and she knew she had fucked up.

How has that sneaky bastard already corrupted Katsumi without me knowing? Kakashi was fuming. He was pissed off at himself for being so oblivious, but most of all he was seething with murderous intent towards Obito Uchiha.

He slapped on a calm facade and collected Obito's whereabouts from the chuunin at the sign in desk. This wasn't against the rules but it was heavily frowned upon. Yet, the look in Kakashi's cold grey eyes convinced the lower-ranked Shinobi to give up the goods. Obito was due back at midday at the front gate of the village. Kakashi didn't say another word as he marched out of the Hokage building and took off towards the village boundary.

The silver-haired shinobi didn't want anyone to know what he was doing or where he was going, so he expertly scaled the wall and dropped down into the trees in the outer forest. He knew Rin would have told someone by now, so he made sure to keep out of sight.

With skill, he made his way in a wide arch through the forest and found the perfect spot near the village's main entrance, far enough away for the guards to be none the wiser. Obito was a straightforward kind of guy, if the mission said to meet at the front gate that's what he was going to do and Kakashi was going to intercept him before he got close. The wolf shinobi made sure to stay out of range of the ninja on duty and perched stealthy on a high branch of a big tree. Kakashi wasn't stupid, he knew there was no way Obito would be on time, even with no clan members for him to help or distract him. So he hunkered down and prepared for a long wait.

Time slipped through his fingers, he kept his senses trained on the surrounding trees and the path below but he heard nothing but squirrels and birds. Noon came and went with still no sign of the slack Uchiha. Kakashi's rage simmered as the afternoon came and he still didn't show. Night fell on the forest and a cold breeze chilled the waiting shinobi to the core. He sniffed the air but still found it empty of Obito's distinct stench.

The least the bastard could do is be on time to his funeral… he thought sarcastically as he turned the page of his book.

Before Kakashi knew it, midnight struck and he was beyond livid. Obito was always late but this was ridiculous. He looked up at the moon and noted it was full tonight, so full that it took on a subtle red tint, though the observing shinobi was too occupied to think anything of the strange phenomenon.

The canine ninja started to second guess himself, thinking that maybe Obito had already returned to the village but had taken a different route into the village. He stood up on the branch and crouched to drop but paused as he caught a familiar scent on the wind.

Twelve hours late, Obito came running through the forest, his smell thick with sweat, dirt and blood. His breathing was laboured and it was clear to Kakashi that his opponent was tired. For a fleeting moment he felt a twinge of guilt but that was quickly squashed by the force of his wrath. He dropped from the tree and purposefully strolled into the road.

Obito saw his old friend blocking the path, he dug his heels into the ground skidding to a stop. He wiped his grimy cheek with the back of his hand. "Bakashi, what are you doing out here?" He could feel the anger Kakashi directed at him, after all these years of being his rival it wasn't as if this was outside of the norm. Though, this time he could practically taste Kakashi's lust for his blood.

"So you thought you could get away with it?" Kakashi growled low and menacing.

The dark-haired boy casually rubbed his neck in an attempt to ease himself. "Alright, Kakashi, this is a bad joke. I'm exhausted and I don't have time for your games." He took a step to the side to try and go around his friend but was stopped in his tracks by a murderous stare.

"Do I look like I'm joking?" Kakashi rumbled.

Obito's positive mood took a drastic turn. He gritted his teeth and spoke once more. "Look here, teme, what has your panties in a twist, huh? Is it really me or is it you? Did Rin-chan reject you or something? You can't keep taking your hurt feelings out on me."

A menacing chuckle fell from Kakashi's lips as he took a step forward. "You seriously thought you could violate my sister and I would just sit back and watch?"

"Oh... that's your problem? I can't believe it took you this long to figure it out. Wait- you didn't, did you? Who told you? It was Rin-chan, wasn't it?" He had fully expected Kakashi to overreact when he found out they had slept together. Knowing what Kakashi was mad about made it easier to understand. At least his anger wasn't confusing, however unjustified.

"What did you do to her? Did you trick her? Threaten her? Or did you force her?" Kakashi's voice dripped with malice.

Obito felt like he had been back-handed across the face. All the patience drained from his body, replaced by a wave of pure volatile outrage. "You motherfucker. You dare think I would-" he stopped before he could even utter such a foul word. "You're a piece of shit, you know that? Do you even know Katsumi at all? You honestly believe she would have let someone force her into anything?"

At this point he was rubbing his aching temples to try and quell his rage. "You're angry at me but you should be angry at yourself! Look at you, stomping your feet and packing a tantrum because your sister fucked her boyfriend. Pathetic." He clenched his fists as he watched every word hit Kakashi right where it hurt.

The wolf shinobi's eyes narrowed in disgust as he took another step forward. "You have been planning this from the start. Lull her into a false sense of security and then take her innocence. That's all you ever wanted. But I see right through you and I won't let you get away with it."

"Do I have to spell it out for you? I love Katsumi. She is her own person. She made her own choice. I would cut off my own hands before I ever let anyone hurt her like that, let alone me." Obito paused for a moment as it all clicked into place in his mind. "Wait a second… this isn't about her is it, this is about you… You're terrified of losing her... aren't you?"

Kakashi's stunned silence told the black-haired shinobi he was right on the money. "Kakashi, this is a problem that you need to sort out with yourself. Stop blaming everyone else." Obito tried to calm himself with deep soothing breaths. "If you give up this stupid vendetta now I won't tell her this went down, because unlike you, I don't want to ruin your relationship with your sister." The Uchiha male felt incredibly bitter and still he offered his childhood friend the olive branch.

Something inside Kakashi snapped. Obito's words rang so true in his mind that it pushed him fully over the edge. "Or you could fight me here and now. Man to man."

Obito blanched at him. He was drained from his three-day mission and now he had to fight Kakashi in a one-on-one. All of his frustration came out in a long deep sigh. Not only was Kakashi disregarding his sister's right to make her own choice but he actually had the audacity to imply that he would dare to force the love of his life into sleeping with him. His mind flashed back to the look of rapture on her face as they made love and the breathless giggles that escaped her as they fooled around in bed. A switch flipped inside him. Immediately, his mangekyou sharingan activated and sunk into his fighting stance.

Kakashi responded to Obito's actions by slipping into his own battle stance.

Obito refused to attack first, instead staring his opponent down with icy daggers.

So be it, thought the masked shinobi as he took action first. He came in hot, sending a kunai whistling past Obito's ear as a distraction. With brutal force, he aimed a kick to the opposite side, but his heel smashed into Obito's forearm instead.

The raven-haired shinobi may be tired but there was no way he was going to lose. As he blocked Kakashi's blow, he twisted which allowed him to slip behind his rival. With a powerful kick to the back, Kakashi went flying.

Kakashi caught himself on a tree branch before he hit the ground. He glared at his teammate and bared his fangs under his mask. Once again he came in head first, landing a punch to Obito's crossed arms. They traded skilled blows, neither of them holding back as they continued to pummel each other. Every punch increased in strength and every kick increased in speed. When Kakashi was pushed back by a punch to the stomach he decided to play dirty. When he hit the ground, he grabbed a fist full of dirt and lobbed it into Obito's eyes.

Obito hissed in pain and covered his face with his hands. Kakashi acted in his moment of weakness, pulling out a kunai and going straight for the Uchiha's bad arm. Only for the blade to slice right through his rival as if he was nothing but air. When he looked back at his adversary he saw Obito's wild bloodshot eyes staring back at him.

"You want to play dirty, baka? I'll show you dirty." The furious sharingan user moved at incredible speed. He reeled his arm back and smashed his fist right into the bridge of Kakashi's nose.

The former prodigy landed on his ass and pinched his nose in an attempt to stop the crimson now leaking onto his dark navy mask. He felt his eye sting as his gifted sharingan activated against his will. Despite the pain he stood and attacked once again.

The savagery with which they thrashed each other was intense. Neither of them conceded as they continued the fight. Their battle reached its crescendo when Kakashi timed a hit just right and it landed right on Obito's sternum.

There was a beat of silence as the air was pushed from the older boy's lungs. Kakashi's vengeful smirk was the last straw. Their sharingan eyes pulsed with power and ached like never before. Obito lunged for Kakashi's throat, sending them both hurtling towards the ground.

They fell for longer than they anticipated, catching the two former comrades off guard. As they hit the dirt they were both blinded by sudden bright light. They rolled apart and landed prone on their backs, staring up at the sky in shock. As they looked above them, a red and black swirling portal closed with a barely audible hiss.

The sun was beaming down from above, signaling to the trained ninja that it was suddenly near noon. They both sat up and looked at each other and then back up at the sky.

"Did you do this, dobe?" Kakashi accused his friend. All of his rage suddenly replaced with uncertainty and the building fear of the unknown.

Obito snorted in annoyance, but replied: "No, teme, this is just as shocking to me as it is to you."

They both searched the trees around them and pushed themselves onto shaky feet. Both of them were exhausted, bruised, and most of all clueless. The trees around them looked the same just… taller, with thicker trunks and longer branches.

"We are still in the Leaf, right?" the silver-haired male asked.

"I think so? Does something feel… off to you?" Obito turned to face his friend with a look of concern.

Suddenly, the sound of rapid footsteps and thunderous voices sounded in Kakashi's ears from two miles away. Quickly he pulled his friend with him into a nearby tree to hide.

Three shinobi came hurtling past, followed by a familiar green clad shinobi. Gai?! They both realised in shock that it was indeed Gai, but he was… older? And he looked to be the sensei of a genin team. The team was made up of a hyuuga boy, a slim brunette girl, and a boy with a black, shiny, bowl cut.

One of the young genin shouted as they passed by, "Gai-sensei, our mission went so well, I'm going to do five-hundred laps around the village to celebrate!" The loud boy even had the same bushy brows as their friend.

"Lee-kun, quiet down, you are giving me a headache," the long-haired hyuuga tried to quell his teammates' enthusiasm.

"Lee, not until we have eaten! Then I shall celebrate our YOUTHFUL victory by joining you!" Older Gai pumped his fist as he hollered after his students. The rest of his students cringed at the volume while the kid in spandex only grew more excited.

The males looked at each other in baffled silence as the boisterous team passed without noticing their position. Soon the coast was completely clear.

"Did you see that portal, Kakashi- Oh shit! Your eye." Obito scrambled to find his medical kit and placed a gauze over Kakashi's bleeding but deactivated sharingan. He supported Kakashi as he swayed side to side from chakra loss.

Kakashi's heart constricted as his teammate cared for him when moments earlier he had been selfishly attacking him with lethal intent. He reached up to hold the gauze as Obito taped it in place. Once his eye was tended to, he reached into his own medical kit and handed Obito a piece of gauze. "Uh, you too…"

The raven haired jounin gratefully took the offering and wiped the blood from under his own eye.

"I did… What do you think happened? Did we time travel?" the silver jounin offered, pushing his guilt to the back of his mind.

The taller male scratched his chin as he pondered his suggestion. "It could be, maybe we should check out the village? We might find answers there?"

They nodded in unison and made their way to the outer wall of the Leaf Village, avoiding the main gate. This white wall had an aged yellow hue to it and was much higher than the wall in their time. A guard strolled across the top of the boundary with a bored look on his face as the two waited for the perfect time to sneak over. When the on-duty shinobi was out of sight, they both took off towards the stone wall and scaled it with caution. They slipped over and found themselves in a strangely different Leaf Village.

The streets were absent of the heavy foot traffic they were used to, but they still kept out of sight to avoid detection. Buildings were duller and the usual market stalls that had become staples for the young adults were gone, completely different.

"NARUTO! YOU PERVERT CHAAA!" A young girl cried out.

Suddenly, an orange body went flying past them right into the dumpster they were hiding behind. The men stared at the raging girl as she stalked towards the now flailing Naruto.

"Sakura-chan, I was just fooling around! I didn't mean it, honest!" Naruto's voice was cracking, either from puberty or nerves.

The pink-haired girl stopped Kakashi as he poked out of his hiding spot, shell-shocked at the events unfolding before him. "Oh, Kakashi-sensei, we aren't slacking off, promise! We were definitely trying to find-"

"That old lady's demon cat! Sasuke-kun, ran off on his own again. He's probably already found her by now. Baka, teme." Naruto cut Sakura off, causing her eye to twitch in agitation.

"Ah, sensei, you're looking rather... young today? Did you get a facial or something? Wait, sensei, are you hurt?" Sakura questioned, her hands were behind her back as she came closer to inspect the frozen jounin.

Obito stifled a laugh from his spot in the shadows.

"Naruto-kun, Sakura-chan, stop stalling and help me with this mission." Sasuke saved the day as he ran up to the pair, a scowl permanently etched onto his face. His eyes flickered to Kakashi and his black eyes narrowed. "Kakashi-sensei, if you are going to spy on us, do a better job at hiding." The young boy snapped as he took off once more.

Obito frowned as he observed the rage that seemed to seep from Sasuke's pores. This wasn't simply at his teammates, this anger was a deep festering resentment. Obito knew this all too well and knew Uchiha were prone to it. But he was baffled as to why a sweet, innocent boy like Sasuke could end up so full of hatred.

"Wait! Sasuke-kun, wait for me!" Sakura cried out in a hopeless voice as she desperately ran after the Uchiha boy, followed by a disgruntled Naruto.

As soon as the kids were gone, the men felt a taller figure drop down in between them with an ominous aura.

"State your name and business, you second-rate imposter." There, in the shadows with them stood an older, taller Kakashi with a stone cold glare directed at a very flustered and confused younger Kakashi.

Now Obito stepped in, "Woah, woah! Hold up a second, there seems to be a misunderstanding."

The older Kakashi spun with a look of complete horror on his face. That voice rang deep in the recesses of his mind trudging up old memories and recurring nightmares. The figure in front of him looked and sounded just like his old childhood friend, but older? This had to be a bad dream. That is impossible, Obito Uchiha is long dead. Despite himself he still had to ask, "O-o-obito?!"

And the plot thickens… What's happening here, huh? Find out in the next chapter! Or will you? Mwahahahaha
