Chapter 29
"GAJEEL!" Natsu's voice echoed through the walls of the newly built guildhall. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!
"No way–" Lucy displayed a look of both shock and fear.
"N-naruto-sama?" Juvia's face held a look of horror as she saw the look of anger on the object of her affection. "I-I didn't…"
"Juvia joining the guild, I am fine with it, but this is another matter altogether," Erza said. "He is directly responsible for the destruction of the guild."
"Yeah, Master! What were you thinking?" Gray chimed in.
"Hmph, it's not like I have much of a choice" The Iron Dragon Slayer huffed. "I came here for work. Nothing more."
"Then look for wor–" Natsu began to pick a fight, but Naruto punched him in the head.
"OW! What was that for?" The hotheaded dragon slayer turned his attention to his fellow guildmate.
"That's enough Natsu," Naruto said, causing everyone in the guild to widen their eyes.
"But he's–"
Naruto just didn't want him to speak.
"If Ojii-san believes that someone like him can change, then I think we must trust him. Besides…" The blonde walked towards the gloomy-looking wizard and held out his hand in front of him.
Gajeel was about to slap the hand away, but Naruto forcefully grabbed it in a very friendly handshake, too friendly in fact. "I think you wouldn't think twice about causing trouble. Am I right Nakama-san?"
The Iron Dragon gulped at the blonde's tone. There was venom laced in those words, almost like a threat. The air around him seemed cold. He also felt like there were giant beasts ready to devour him. As much as wanted to retort, he remembered that this was the Wizard who stood toe to toe with Master Jose. He didn't want to anger him, lest he ends up like his old guild master.
"I-it's not like I could if I wanted to," Gajeel stuttered out. "L-like I said, I came here for work."
"Good," The air around the blonde changed to that of a warm one, and Gajeel felt it. He felt that he was greatly welcomed into the guild by this one blonde. He was then shown one of the brightest, warmest smiles he had ever been shown in a very long while. "I look forward to working with you. Welcome to the Family."
He looked away, feeling like he didn't deserve to be treated this way. It was so long since he had been shown this, that he didn't know how to react. All that came from his mouth was, "Right…uh…Thank you…"
With that, the lights turned off, and a couple of waitresses pushed them to their seats.
"Hey, what gives!" Naruto complained.
"Shh, It's about to start," Jet shushed him and pointed to a stage where a pair of curtains opened revealing Mira wearing a very revealing cocktail dress and holding a guitar as she sat on a stool.
"Mirajane!"
"Mira-chan!"
"That's what we've all been waiting for!"
Cheers erupted from everyone who had already seen the act, most especially from the males in the crowd.
The white-haired beauty scanned the crowd looking for one wizard in particular. She gave a wink in the lucky guy's general direction earning more loud cheers from those who thought it was for them.
She taps her guitar three taps, then sang her heart out. It was a song dedicated to the guild members, their family members, leaving for a job. Everyone listened and felt the warmth. It was a reminder that no matter how far they went away from their guild, they always have a family to return to waiting for them in Magnolia.
The song was definitely heartwarming. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. Well, everyone did, except for one. Natsu growled with his head on the counter. It seems he still didn't accept his new guildmate.
Naruto, on the other hand, had a look of deep thought. It was like he was remembering something of the past. After mentally debating with himself for a second, he stood up just as the song was about to finish.
"Come on, Natsu. Cheer up," Lucy told his guildmate. "Naruto's right, you know."
"I still don't like it," Natsu grumbled even more.
"Now that I think about it, has anyone seen Naruto?" Lucy asked to no one in particular
"I saw him going out of town. He was heading somewhere North," A random guild member answered.
Suddenly, Juvia was all up in his face questioning him, "Did Naruto-sama leave Juvia with another woman? Did you ask where he was going?"
"Uh…n-no, s-sorry," The frightened fairy tail wizard stuttered out. He wasn't expecting the sudden questions nor was he expecting the sudden outburst.
"Gah! You're useless!" Juvia threw the wizard back and gave him a disgusted look.
She then turned to the open guild doorway, "Naruto-sama, wait for me! I will save you from those horrible women!" She declared before running out of the guild.
Lucy looked at the water woman oddly, "Should we be worried?"
"We all know Naruto can handle himself just fine," Gray answered. "I don't think there's anything to worry about."
"GAAAAAAH!" Natsu suddenly yelled in pain.
He turned to his left to see Gajeel, who the master forced to sit beside him in an attempt to get the two familiar with each other. He was minding his own business. Natsu picked him up by the collar and glared at him with hateful eyes. "You jerk! You did that on purpose, did you?"
"I don't know what you're talking about, loser!" Gajeel yelled back. "Now leave me to drink in peace!"
Out of nowhere, a couple of mugs hit them square in the face.
That was the last straw. It did not help that Natsu was already in a foul mood. He flipped the table, knocking all the drinks to the floor, except for a plate of strawberry cake that Erza expertly caught even before it was thrown off. Despite that though, it was still knocked away by an angry Gray who stood to confront the two dragon slayers as she was about to get a bite to eat.
Her face turned dark as the environment around her turned chaotic; another signature Fairy Tail brawl was taking place. She stared at the squashed form of her cake when a random wizard stepped on it. She winced at what happened. She felt her heart ache like it was she herself being stepped on.
It was then that something within her snapped. She beat the nearest wizard, which turned out to be Elfman, to a bloody pulp. "Everyone shut the hell up! You crushed my cake!"
Mira stopped her song and sighed seeing the mess that was taking place. She pulled her cocktail dress off revealing a skimpy outfit consisting of a very short top, a mini skirt, and fishnet stockings. "Alright then!" She thrust her hand up into the air. "Rock it is then!"
She began a guitar riff as the pure chaos ensued.
On the ground of the guild, Lucy was crawling to the door to avoid the debris flying everywhere. 'I guess Fairy Tail never changes…' She thought. 'I wonder what you're doing Naruto…'
THE OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN
"Going somewhere?" A child-like voice called out to him as he was walking off somewhere.
Naruto turned towards the sudden voice and immediately brightened upon seeing who it was, "Mavis-chan, what are you doing here?"
"I came to visit you silly," The eternally looking child flung herself at the blonde, but she pouted as she raised her head to meet eyes with the blonde. "I came to your house today, but it was empty!"
"Ma ma, sorry about that," Naruto rubbed the back of his head. "I didn't know you were coming over."
"Never mind that," she said, getting back to her feet. "Where are you going?"
"Well…remember when I disappeared for a while way back when?" Naruto asked.
Mavis thought for a moment and remembered the time that she was left all alone on the island worried sick about her new companion. "Hmmm," She said. "What about it?"
"That's where I'm going," Naruto's voice trailed off. "Today's the day, y'know…"
Mavis looked at the teen with a sad look on her face, "I'd like to meet them too."
"Really? You'll come with me?" Naruto's face brightened.
"Why not?" Mavis nodded.
"Great!" Naruto shot to his feet. "They'll love to meet you too!"
"But isn't that a long way from here?" Mavis said, placing a finger on her chin. "You were gone for a long time."
"Nonsense," The bonde waved her off. "We'll be fine. A little jog won't hurt. Besides–"
He paused and got on one knee while turning his back to the First Master. "I know you would like riding on my back."
Without even thinking, Mavis climbed onto his back.
Naruto, feeling the weight that mounted him, got up on his feet. Upon making sure that the little lady was comfortable on his rear, he leaped onto the building's roof with one single jump.
Shortly after the shinobi jumped away, a massive dust cloud thundered towards the area. There was a hint of blue within the dust cloud that knocked over passersby and random objects in her path.
When the dust cloud cleared, it was revealed that Juvia was the cause of the chaos. She stood at the edge of town looking around for someone.
Seeing that her target was nowhere in sight, Juvia seethed in anger. "That liar!" She hissed. "He's not here!"
She looked towards the distance. "Naruto-sama! Why did you have to leave Juvia?!"
THE NEXT DAY
*sigh*
Lucy sat in front of her mirror. She was currently having a makeover done by the best hairstylist she knows.
He was a man with black hair that was braided in red cornrows that end in a shape that reminds Happy of crab pincers. He has thick lips and green shades on his eyes. He wore a blue striped shirt, dark trousers with two aquamarine stripes each side, and boots on his feet. In his pants there was a ring chain in the right pocket and a hairdresser's tools bag in the left side of his belt. Also, there were six crab legs that appear on his back, cementing the idea to the blue cat that the celestial spirit was a crab.
"What's on your mind, ebi?" The hairdresser asked in a smooth voice. "You were quiet since you summoned me."
"Sorry, Cancer," Lucy sighed. "It's just that Naruto left yesterday without even telling anyone."
"So, you're missing your partner already, ebi?" Cancer raised an eyebrow at his key holder.
Lucy turned a shade of red, vigorously shaking her head, "No, no, nothing of the sort. I-I was just…worried about him…yeah, that's it! I was worried about him!"
"Hmmm…" Cancer hummed with a bit of insinuation in his tone.
"Y-yeah! He usually tells me if he's going on a job, and he also takes me with him from time to time." Lucy said, trying to clear things up. "I am just hoping he's okay, or something…"
"Yeaahh, you keep telling yourself that, ebi," The Crab-man said. He knew the rumors going on in the Celestial Spirit World, and this interaction almost proves everything to be correct.
"But it's true!" Lucy stood so abruptly that Cancer almost clipped a significant portion of her hair.
"I'm not saying I don't believe you, ebi," The Celestial Spirit said. "I do. I'm just saying; are you sure that's what you truly feel?"
Lucy sat back down on her on the chair and looked down. "I don't know. I never felt like this before. This is all new to me."
"All done, ebi!" The crab said.
"You weren't even listening!" Lucy protested.
"I was," The hairdresser defended himself. "I was just concentrating on your hair, but regarding what you said, ebi, I suggest long and hard about what you really feel. You don't want any regrets."
"I-I suppose…" The Celestial regarded the advice that was given to her.
"And, make sure to let us win the bet, ebi!"
"What's that supposed to mean?!" Lucy snapped her head to her Celestial Spirit.
"Nothing," She was just given a thumbs up. "Pleasure doing your hair again, ebi…"
She sighed and turned to the mirror, "They're just teasing me…and what's this about a bet?"
Pushing the thought to the back of her head, she noticed her new hairstyle and grinned, "I am just too cute today. I gotta show Naruto!"
She stopped as soon as he reached her door, "Oh right, he's not here…Oh well…"
FAIRY TAIL GUILDHALL
"I wonder when that reporter will be coming," Lucy leaned over the railing giddy with excitement.
"Master didn't say, but I'm sure he'll be here any time now," It was Erza who answered. She was standing right next to Lucy as they both scanned the guild.
"I hope he comes soon," Lucy said. "I would hate it if the guild gets too overexcited and ruins my get-up."
"It can't be helped," Erza shrugged. "This is the Fairy Tail Guild. I would expect no less from a guild that's always in high spirits."
"Speaking of high spirits…have you seen Naruto in town at all?" The Celestial Spirit Wizard asked, hoping that the S-class Wizard could have spotted her partner around town.
"Naruto? Hmm…No, I haven't seen him since yesterday," Erza answered as she massaged her chin in thought. "Looks like someone else misses him."
"Not you too, Erza-san…" The blonde deflated when she didn't get the answer she was hoping for.
She looked over towards the Ex-Phantom Lord Member, Juvia. She was sitting at a table sniffling and throwing tantrums.
"Waaah! Naruto-sama! Why did you have to leave, Juvia?!" Lucy heard her wail.
'Sheesh, I miss Naruto, but I don't act out to that extent,' She thought with a sweatdrop.
'Wait…' She realized what she said. 'Did I just admit that I miss Naruto? Oh no, no, no, this can't be happening. I can't be feeling like this towards him. What if it ruins the team? What if–"
"SOOOO COOOOL!"
As she was inwardly panicking, a very familiar and very annoying voice caused her to freeze up. Her head stiffly turned to see Jason, a reporter from the Weekly Sorcerer."
"IT'S THE TITANIA ERZA HERSELF! COOL COOL COOL!
"Oh, you've come," The S-class Wizard said in the calmest way possible.
The reporter went berserk. He ran around the guild interviewing every wizard in the guild and ignoring Lucy who was stunned and completely red from her argument with herself. Jason was on a roll asking questions to everyone he could see. When it came to Natsu though, the dragon slayer punched in the face. According to the hothead, Jason had been articles that were destroying the said wizard's reputation. He just had enough of the questions that he punched him in the face, causing him to land in front of Lucy who had just recovered.
"Wait, is that–" Jason said, calmly at first, but then…
"COOOOOOL! IT'S YOU! THE OTHER HALF OF FIORE'S MOST POPULAR LOVE TEAM!" The reporter exploded once more. "TELL ME! ARE YOU AND NARUTO DA–"
As soon as the D-word was about to be said, three glares shot towards the reporter and the Celestial Wizard. Lucy panicked again and immediately covered the reporter's mouth.
"Shhhhhh!" She shushed the boisterous man. "Not another word or kami help me…"
"COOOOOOOOOL!" was all Jason could say.
Feeling the intensity of those glares, she immediately escaped and took refuge in the guild's changing room. In the safety of the changing room, shielded from all the curious stares, she found solace.
"Phew," Lucy wiped her brow, her face all red. "Those questions were way too personal."
Looking up for a bit after gathering her thoughts, she was surprised to see Mira bound and gagged.
"Oh my gosh! Mira-san!" She gasped. "Who did this to you?! Is there an enemy?"
Lucy tore the tape off the S-class wizard's mouth carefully. The model gasped for air for a few seconds before she spoke, "No, there's no enemy…" She said, "I-it's Gajeel…"
As if on cue, they heard feedback coming from outside the room. They assumed it was from the stage that Mira was singing from.
They exited the room only to do a double take at the scene that was playing in front of them.
"Th-that's…Gajeel?"
There on the stage was the normally brooding dragon slayer, wearing a suit and tie complete with sunglasses and a corsage. All the audience around the stage, who were eager to see Mira perform again, collectively did spit takes as they saw Fairy Tail's new addition in such formal attire.
"Listen up," He spoke into the floating mic. "I wrote this called 'best friend'. I hope you like it."
He began singing, and the crowd started complaining. The core members just left their mouths hanging open.
"You know," Gray began to speak. "His voice may be horrible, but his lyrics aren't so bad."
"I know…" Natsu nodded
For once, the two rivals agreed on something.
WITH NARUTO AND MAVIS
"That was fun!" Mavis giggled as Naruto let her down. "I forgot how fast you could run."
"I could have flown us here, but I didn't want Chomei's form to time out on me like before," Naruto said, rubbing the back of his head.
"Bah! Just admit you're scared of heights!" The said Biju's voice was heard outside Naruto's mindscape.
"Don't be like that," Mavis said. "Naruto tried hard, did he not?"
"Gah! Don't gang up on me!" Chomei shut off his connection and went back to sleep.
"Don't mind him," The blonde waved him off. "He's just salty about his powers being the last thing I got the hang of."
"So, this is Guiltina," Mavis said, looking in wonder at her. "Look at all those animals. And is that…"
Just then, particles began falling from the sky, covering the ground with a thin layer of snow.
"Woooow," Mavis said in child-like glee. "Is it like this all year round?"
"From what they told me, yes…" Naruto said as he looked up to the sky.
"Even I can feel the power from the particles," Mavis said in wonder.
Gathering her composure, the First Master spoke, "So, where are they?"
"Follow me."
Naruto led her through the continent into one of the secluded areas. There were absolutely no people in the places they crossed. Mavis didn't think any of it. Considering who they were going to meet, it was understandable.
In the distance, Mavis saw a massive structure, two of them in fact. Getting closer, it looked like giant skulls, dragon skulls. She smiled. She, herself, has never seen a dragon in her lifetime, but here was Naruto. How lucky was he to have stumbled upon them, let alone two of them?
One problem though, Naruto's expression changed. He must have sensed an enemy nearby.
"What are you doing here?" Naruto said with hostility in his voice.
As they got closer, Mavis saw a buxom and curvaceous woman standing in front of what looked to be a grave. She had long blonde hair that reached all the way to her hips. She was donning a loose kimono with fur lining on the top while also having flower designs all over as well as zigzag lines on its edges. Her head is covered by a hood adorned with an upward crescent moon with a gem on top as well as a pair of wings on each side. She also has a pair of socks while wearing wooden sandals.
"Is that how you treat a visitor?" The woman asked in a mocking tone.
"I don't recall ever inviting you here!" Naruto said raising his voice a little.
"My, my," The woman turned around, shaking her head. "And yet, you see me here every year visiting my favorite human. Why not stop me then?"
"Even if I wanted to, I promised the old man I wouldn't get involved if I didn't accept it myself," Naruto said.
"How noble," The woman giggled. "Well then, continue to please me, Uzumaki Naruto. Until the time you can put an end to my brethren, I shall watch you and your friends. Bye now!"
Without any warning or trace, the woman disappeared.
"Who was that?" Mavis asked when things settled down.
Naruto paused for a moment, "Wait…"
Mavis gave him a deadpanned expression. "After all this time, you didn't get her name…"
"Classic Naruto move," Mavis face-faulted. "Anyway, forget about her…aren't you going to introduce me?"
"Ojisan, obasan…" Naruto looked at the grave with a melancholic gaze. "This is Mavis-chan. She's the one who taught me how to use magic in this world."
"Mavis took a look at the grave. The two massive dragon heads served as the grave's headstone and the carved onto the stone were two names, on each skull.
Brontes and Saphira
"So, they were dragons?" Mavis asked. She didn't know if anything could surprise her anymore.
Naruto nodded. "The last of their kind. They fled here when Acnologia usurped the throne of the dragon king and started annihilating the rest of the dragon population. I was lucky to find them towards the end of their lives."
The blonde solemnly stared at the two massive cranial bones. Other than Mavis, they were the closest he had gotten to an individual, despite the couple being dragons. After seemingly losing all the friends he made in the Elemental Nations, he craved for these connections with others.
"Are you okay?" The smaller girl asked.
Naruto wiped the tears forming at the sides of his eyes. "I'll be okay."
Remembering the family he left back in Fiore, he gave the grave one more forlorn look and turned to the first master.
"Let's go home."
SOMEWHERE IN FIORE
A large figure entered a saloon. Clearly, he was in a bad mood.
Everyone in this whole town was laughing. They weren't laughing at this guy if that's what you're thinking. Throughout the town, almost everyone had at a copy of the latest issue of the Weekly Sorcerer Magazine. (We all know why they bought the issue) And it that issue, Fairy Tail had been made a laughing stock, to them at least. This in particular was what had gotten him in a bad mood.
"BUWAHAHA!" One group in particular roared in laughter as the figure entered the bar. "GET A LOAD OF THIS ONE. THESE FOOLS IN THAT GUILD ARE AT IT AGAIN! BUWAHAHAH!"
"TELL ME ABOUT IT!" Another one answered after taking one swig of his beer. "THOSE GUYS IN FAIRY TAIL ARE PATHETIC!"
All of a sudden, the laughing stopped. They could feel an overwhelming presence behind them. Slowly and stiffly, the craned their head towards the large man.
It was Laxus Dreyar.
"Oh, don't mind me," he said clearly not amused. "Why don't you get back to magazine of yours and tell me how pathetic my guild is."
"Nothing like that," the men waved their hands in the air in an attempt to clear the misunderstanding.
Laxus just stared at them, the scowl still evident on his face.
They all gulped.
"Let's bail!" The guy who was seemingly the leader screamed and ran out of the door; his lackeys quick to follow suit.
Clap
Clap
Clap
Someone in the corner of the bar clapped slowly at the scene he was watching.
"I would expect nothing less from a celebrity like you," the man said sarcastically, as he left the shadows of the bar corner. "Your mere presence drove them away. You make your old pappy proud. BUWAHAHA! Pathetic!"
"Zatô-sama, please let this go," the bar owner, worried about his business, pleaded to the man.
Laxus spared him an annoyed glance.
He saw that it was a a large man whose face resembles that of a monkey, with very prominent ears. He has an Afro, which bears his guild stamp, paired with similar sideburns, and also sports gold teeth. He wore a a diamond-patterned shirt, with a polka-dotted tie circling its open collar, light pants held up by a belt covered in studs, and ankle boots.
"Who the hell are you?" Laxus asked in annoyance.
"I see you've never heard of me," The ape-man chuckled. "Well, to be fair, we toil in the background instead of making a fool out of ourselves in Sorcerer Weekly."
"You have balls to pick a fight with me, monkey," Laxus smiled at the misplaced confidence this man was showing him. "Why don't we take this outside?"
"Please reconsider, sir," The bar owner pleaded, this time to Laxus. He was trying to warn the wizard of this man's infamous reputation.
"Sorry, I don't tango with flies like you." The ape yawned. "If there's anyone who's going outside, it's you…"
Without warning, Laxus found himself flying back through the bar wall and into the street.
"BUWAHAHAH! I knew those fairies were weak!" The ape wheezed in laughter at Laxus's defeat that came all too quickly. "Why don't I start hu—"
He didn't get to finish his declaration as a blast of lightning zipped from the hole in the wall and electrocuted him.
Laxus calmly walked in the room and examined his handiwork. A few seconds later, he looked up with a crazy look on his face.
