AN: Chapter betaed my Miette and dstone12 :)
Severus was sitting in his office, waiting with a mix of anticipation and dread for Tuei to introduce him to the first helper she deemed worthy of integrating House Caspian.
He had spent the previous two hours at Gringotts, in a meeting with Hoardrock to arrange to buy more areas of Spinner's End as well as discuss his new House members. He had left with the disturbing picture of the Goblin smiling gleefully, a vague feeling of having launched into motion something far bigger than he realised.
That feeling had only come back in force when after lunch, Tuei had stated that she was going to introduce him to the helpers she had selected and that she fully expected him to approve at least two of them.
Severus could not help but feel like a general looking over his troops and deciding which soldiers would be better suited for the coming war. It was silly, neither the Tonks nor the helpers were warriors, and yet, Severus was well aware that Tuei was pushing him to adopt more House members to increase the House's capabilities and bolster their House's power and protection.
It did not escape him that belonging to his House could put them in even more danger, because of his current dealings with Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes and because he had injured an Auror only two nights ago. Yet, his future helpers no doubt were free House Elves, and belonging to his House would offer them far more protection than they currently possessed. By the same token, adopting new House members who had never belonged to a House before would increase their safety as well.
"We've already gone over this," chided Dhaal, stretching on the armchair placed at Severus' side.
"I know, but it's important," Sensed back Severus.
"But we've made our decision, why trouble yourself over it again?"
Sometimes, Severus envied his Familiar's clear state of mind.
He straightened at the knock on his office's door.
"Come in."
Tuei entered first, followed by another House Elf who was about two inches taller than her but looked younger than any House Elf Severus had ever met. An aura of passion and barely controlled excitement seemed to radiate around him.
She stopped in front of Severus' desk. The younger House Elf would have kept walking forward if she had not seized his wrist. He looked at her sheepishly before turning his gaze to Severus, his round eyes brightening with even more excitement.
Was Tuei certain of her choice? Her behaviour with him indicated a closeness between them, but he did not think she would let this influence her judgement.
Severus raised an inquiring eyebrow at her.
"Master Severus, Tuei wishes to introduce you to Pākiki from Line Zawia. He has made a plea to be integrated into House Caspian."
The younger Elf bowed respectfully to Severus then Dhaal, his bouncing lessening.
"Pleased to meet you, Pākiki," answered Severus, bowing his head lightly. Tuei had assured him that she would have the helpers sign privacy contracts with her before their meeting, so he went straight to business.
"May I ask why you chose House Caspian instead of another House?"
"Pākiki's parents belong to House Ogden. The House is big, but many of us already serve her. Plus, Pākiki is not good at caring for Wizards and creatures, and working in House Ogden's factory is boring and makes Pākiki sneeze. Pākiki likes plants, but Lord Ogden is not interested in developing this skill and none of the other House Elves know more than Pākiki about plants so Pākiki's parents asked Aunt Tuei for advice and she told Pākiki about Master Severus and Dhaal and the garden and the Greenhouses and Magic's limits and now Pākiki thinks that House Caspian is the right House for him!"
Severus stared in fascination as the young Elf spoke quickly without pausing once to take a breath. He could almost taste his desire to belong to House Caspian and learn.
Nodding to himself, he looked at Tuei, motioning for her to speak.
"Pākiki is a young Elf. He has barely come of age and needs a first House to serve. Tuei believes that his skills are well suited to House Caspian. Our House is growing and as her Ansvar, I will not be able to keep up with all my tasks. Pākiki already knows enough to replace me for several tasks, and I will teach him so he can improve and take on more in the future."
They both made good arguments. To his surprise, Severus found himself amused by Pākiki's excitement. The young Elf's desire to learn and become better resonated in him.
"Pākiki, you seem to possess several qualities that will allow you to fit within House Caspian," began Severus, repressing a smile as the young Elf smiled hopefully at him. "However, I want to be clear about what I would expect from you. You know our motto. If you join House Caspian, I don't want you to limit yourself to just studying plants. Tuei and I will oversee your training and assign you other tutors as we deemed necessary so you may push your limits."
"Yes, that's what I want!" exclaimed Pākiki, nodding his head vigorously.
Severus had never imagined a House Elf could be so passionate about learning, but he had never truly wondered how Tuei had become so knowledgeable. He should know from his own experience that knowledge was never innate.
Did Pākiki and Tuei know Taichichuan? He had seen Faes learning the forms in Kyirong, so why not House Elves? Unless they used another method to master their Khorlos.
He needed to begin teaching Nymphéa soon, so he might as well add Pākiki to the lessons. And even Ted and Andromeda. He missed practising Taichichuan with his family. He could set up a daily morning practice within the House, as a time for the entire House to be together. Helhest, in a few weeks, he might even be able to have them practice with his goblin family.
Severus focused back on Tuei and her nephew.
"Just so we're clear, even if you're still learning, you will be sworn into the House just like Tuei is."
"Pākiki wants to belong to House Caspian and serve Master Severus," agreed the young House Elf seriously.
Severus had never seen Tuei look so proud.
With Dhaal's enthusiastic approval, they spent the next minutes drafting their Oaths.
Pākiki looked weirdly solemn when he spoke.
"I, Pākiki from Line Zawia, adopt Severus Preston Caspian as my Master. I will take care of House Caspian's Greenhouses and garden, as well as support its members as best as I am able. I will do my best to improve and increase my abilities under Master Severus' guidance, within Magic's and my own limits."
Severus Sensed the House hum around him.
"I, Lord Severus Preston Caspian, welcome Pākiki from Line Zawia into House Caspian as my House Elf. I will cater for his needs to the best of my abilities and knowledge. His time is his to manage as he sees fit as long as he focuses on increasing his abilities and knowledge to better meet my household's needs, within his desires as well as Magic's limits."
Dhaal let out a short Scream, then let it fade as Magic accepted their Oaths.
As he had with Tuei and the Tonks family, Severus felt the Bond settle in his mind like a warm presence.
He grimaced as Pākiki immediately pulled on the Bond in a reminder of Nymphéa's wonder and behaviour yesterday.
"What did I tell you?" scolded Tuei at her nephew, who immediately looked sheepish.
He made quick hand signs at her, and Severus watched fascinated as they had an entire conversation without words. Another language to learn it seemed.
Finally, the young House Elf looked at Severus.
"Please forgive Pākiki, Master Severus. I was a bit too excited and forgot Aunt Tuei's advice."
He looked so abashed Severus only answered gruffly not to do this again, except in emergencies. Then, Tuei deftly escorted him outside the office to wait under Andromeda's watchful eye until she could get him settled.
As Severus waited for Tuei to come back with the next helper, he wondered how many House Elves she intended to adopt in their House. Pākiki fit right in, eager to learn and looking for his first House. He was not certain an older House Elf would find his place so easily. Moreover, House Caspian was not big enough to need many Elves. At least, he didn't think so.
Pākiki seemed to come from a big House. Severus frowned, thinking back to the name the young Elf had given him. Ogden. An old House, almost as much as the Malfoys, and known for their neutrality in most political matters. He wondered what they would think of Pākiki coming to House Caspian. Would the Head of House even care? And why did he have the feeling that he was forgetting something about this House?
"Focus," chided Dhaal, reminding him that this was not the time to get lost in thoughts as they Sensed Tuei approach.
Severus watched, curious, when Tuei entered his office a second time. Only his goblin training honed thanks to Vampires and Death Eaters prevented his jaw from dropping to the floor.
This time, Tuei was followed by a tiny Faery flying at her shoulder, a small blond humanoid with butterfly kind of wings similar to the ones he had observed at Lucius' during Yule.
His Ansvar did not give him the time to wonder at this surprising turn of event.
"Master Severus, Tuei wishes to introduce you to Esquire Mòr from Tree Brown. He has made a plea to become the founder of House Caspian's Tree."
Severus exchanged a light bow with the Faery, feeling at loss for words. If he remembered what he had read in his Módiǎn, Trees were the equivalent of Clans and Lines for Fairies. However, they were always linked to another race's Rede and depended on them for protection. He had no idea what the rank of Esquire meant.
The Faery greeted Dhaal next then did not wait for Severus to recover his balance before speaking.
"Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, Lord Caspian. I am Esquire Mòr from Tree Brown. My Tree is getting too big for its House and I am more and more often in disagreement with my Chieftain about the governance of our Tree. My mate agreed to join my Tree for me eight seasons ago, but she's getting bored caring only for flowers that must be beautiful. She has always been more interested in experimenting with growing magical plants that will have a practical use. Finally, my mate and I have two beautiful children and are waiting for a third, and we wish for them to grow in a Tree that won't restrict them because of tradition. For all these reasons, I began looking for a Rede where I could establish a new Tree, with a preference for a House, and yours is the one that my mate and I have agreed on. House Caspian's motto as well as your achievements and your public actions have convinced us that House Caspian is the right House for our family. The fact that you have yet to establish a Tree is also very attractive to us because we believe that we are capable of founding our own."
Severus wondered how much Tuei had briefed him before the meeting. Both Esquire Mòr and Pākiki had made well argued pleas, and had also insisted on traits that appealed to him. Plus, House Brown also was among the neutral Houses, which was a plus in his books.
"Thank you for your confidence and trust, Esquire Mòr. I must admit that I don't possess a detailed knowledge of Trees. Would you mind expanding on what you becoming the founder of Tree Caspian would entail?"
The Faery nodded in approval.
"Of course, Lord Caspian. The Bond between a Tree and its House is the equivalent of a close alliance. The House usually offers the Tree a place to settle on its grounds as well as its protection against threats that are not other Trees. In exchange, the Tree will care for those living on the House's grounds. It usually is by ensuring the growth and the blossoming of every kind of plant living on the grounds, as well as making sure that the grounds are well irrigated by magic flows."
They could influence magic flows at will? He understood better why Tuei thought that House Caspian needed their own Tree sooner than later. Was their magic close to Fae's or completely different despite the similarity in their kind's name?
He ignored Dhaal's snicker and his teasing "I guess we're keeping him too", trying to focus on what he might be missing in his ignorance. Founding a Tree sounded a lot like creating a House. Was there a chance that Mòr could fail, and even die?
"I have another question," said Severus. "Can you fail in founding your Tree and what would it mean for you and my House?"
The Esquire hesitated, clearly surprised by the question, before answering.
"Like any passing of the ritual, founding a Tree is not without risk. The failure usually doesn't impact the House, unless it was the cause of the ritual failure."
Were they speaking of the Ritual or of another one specific to Faery?
Severus frowned at him.
"How can the House be the cause of you failing the ritual?"
"It has only happened when the House tried to trick the Faery and gave their Oath an intent different from what was discussed," answered Mòr.
"I don't understand how the Oath between the Faery and the House could be working if one intent was contrary to the other's," stated Severus, puzzled.
The Esquire nodded.
"At the beginning, the Oath is only binding you to agree on letting us create our Tree on Caspian's grounds and not interfere with the ritual. It's only when it succeeds that the Oath will fully settle, and thus it becomes one of the parameters of the ritual."
This was still nebulous.
"We don't intend to trick them, so it doesn't matter," Sensed Dhaal. "And you will get to ask all your questions once they are our Tree."
He disliked not understanding what he was agreeing to.
"Like when you took the Ritual?" Sensed his Familiar pointedly.
Right. There were things with Magic that could only be understood by living through them, and even then, he would be unable to explain exactly how he had passed the Ritual.
"Thank you for your explanations," said Severus to Mòr. "There is one last thing I'd like to clarify before giving you my answer. As you know, our motto is Magic and myself for sole limits. House Caspian is turned toward exploration and experimentation. How would it translate for you?"
Severus was pleased to see the Faery take his time before answering.
"We are wood Faery. By nature, our interests focus on plants and botanical beings. Our Magic is linked to them. However, it doesn't mean that all of us specialise in the same skills. Some have also been known to explore other kinds of Magic, and to try to adapt Wizards' or Goblins' way of doing Magic for them. I sense that curiosity in my eldest, and this is one of the reasons that I believe that House Caspian will be right for us."
Severus was itching to learn more about Fairies' Magic.
He pushed the thought aside. Now was not the time to be excited about Magic. The only thing he was missing to make his decision was to be specific as to his own expectation about the relationship between the Tree and House Caspian.
"Just to be clear, Esquire Mòr, I don't want us to only be neighbours who cohabit near each other. All the members of Tree Caspian will be considered like members of House Caspian. I will expect as much from you as from any other member of my House, be it about pushing your limits or cooperating with each other," stated Severus.
Esquire Mòr nodded gravely.
"We expect no less from you."
Tuei had really chosen her candidates well.
Mòr's joy and relief when Severus agreed to his plea was less expressive than Pākiki´s but as heartfelt. The drafting of this Oath was trickier as he was wary of making a mistake that could prevent the creation of the Tree.
When Dhaal's Scream stopped echoing, this time, the Oath did not settle in Severus' mind but remained like a sharp edge in his mind. It was very uncomfortable.
From Mòr's expression, he felt the same.
"Well, the House is definitely confident in your ability to create our Tree," stated Severus.
The Esquire nodded.
"You pack a lot of power for such a small House. I should have expected it with the signs, but it's so unbelievable…"
The signs? His curiosity was definitely piqued. When the Tree was created, he would need to have a lengthy talk with Mòr.
"If you would excuse me, my Lord. I must undertake the ritual before nightfall."
"Do you have anything you need?" asked Severus, thinking back to his own Ritual and the material he had used.
"Everything's ready," answered Mòr. "It will be settled by morning, one way or another."
"Very well. I have faith in you," stated Severus matter-of-factly.
He spoke the truth, which was quite unexpected when he had only met the Fairy today.
"I won't disappoint you, my Lord," swore the Faery, his gaze determined.
Severus watched Tuei escort him out with trepidation, their Bond throbbing at the back of his mind.
"He'd better get it done quickly," Sensed Dhaal, disgruntled.
He agreed but did not pay much attention to the Thestral as he extended his Sense, trying to guess what kind of helper Tuei was going to introduce next. He needed to work on identifying unknown beings on his territory.
Of course, this one seemed to possess Sensing shields and Severus could not get a clear grasp of their presence.
It was a good thing that Severus now was prepared for even a Dragon to come through his door, or he certainly would have made a spectacle of himself, watching a Centauress carefully making her way into his office, taking great care not to knock into the furniture.
He would need to ask Rhys to make a few adaptations to the Manor if this one became a member of his House. Which, all things considered, seemed quite improbable. Centaurs were known for looking down on Wizards and enjoying fierce fights as much as spending hours discussing nonsense about stars and possible futures.
The Centauress was about the same size as Dhaal when he was his true height. She held herself like a warrior, and her short-sleeved leather waistcoat revealed well-defined and heavily muscled arms. Her brown hair was braided into multiple tiny braids which were held by a leather headband to keep her field-vision clear. Her face was humanoid but her rougher traits coupled to a flat broad nose, big slanting eyes and a white skin with blue reflections gave her an alien feel that made her face hard to read. She made an impressive sight, her eyes taking in the room and its occupants in a way that reminded Severus of Moody.
Severus had no idea what had led Tuei to choose her.
His Ansvar's face was impassive as always. She stopped a bit further away from Severus' desk than previously, to give the Centauress as much space as possible.
"Master Severus, Tuei wishes to introduce you to Manylion Outcast. She has made a plea to integrate into House Caspian."
The Centauress gave a small bow to Severus then Dhaal.
They both bowed back. Contrary to Mòr or Pākiki, she showed no indication that their meeting was crucial for her future.
"Pleased to meet you, Manylion," said Severus. "I must say this is unexpected. May I ask why you wish to be integrated into a House instead of a Herd?"
The Centauress' nostril flared in what appeared to be anger.
Had Severus unknowingly insulted her? Was she so proud she had expected to be welcome without any questioning? Once more, he regretted Hogwarts' shallowness when learning about other cultures. Though his Apprenticeship had not offered much more: what information he had gained had come from the source.
"To be clear, I don't really want to integrate into House Caspian, only to be allowed to settle on your grounds," was her short answer.
This was quite unhelpful in understanding her objective.
Severus raised an unimpressed eyebrow at her.
"So you hope to increase your Herd's size using my territory?"
Hoardrock and Lucius would no doubt have been horrified at his lack of diplomacy, but he had no time to lose in political games. Though Lucius may have already told her to leave, considering her lack of respect.
She hit the ground with her left forward hoof, causing Dhaal to stand up on his four legs and flare his wings in warning. It was not as impressive as when he was his full size, but the Centauress seemed to heed the warning.
"I am named Outcast. This means that few Herds would consider accepting me as their member."
She hesitated, looked at Dhaal and sighed.
"The few that would have overlooked my name won't accept me because I earned it when I lost the challenge to my Stallion."
From what little Severus knew about Centaurs, challenges were quite common ways to solve differences. Her story did not add up.
"I don't understand how losing a challenge could have led you to be cast away and bear such a black mark," stated Severus.
She unconsciously tightened her left hand into a fist.
"They are afraid because of the reason I challenged my Stallion. I have always been on the edge of the Herd because I don't believe in reading the stars. But these past years, the Herd has begun speaking of changes and dark tidings coming. They have spent more and more time bickering and smoking seer weed to better understand the stars, but without taking any steps to ensure the Herd will be protected from this supposedly dark future. I told them that if they believed in the stars, they needed to act on what they saw so we were assured to survive. The challenge to my Stallion was my last bid to push them into action."
She raised her chin defiantly, daring him to criticise her behaviour.
He wondered how old she was in Centaurs years. Was she a youth with a strong idealism or a middle-aged Centauress who had never found her place in her Herd? How to best address her?
"Thank you for your explanation, Manylion," said Severus. "I must say I still don't understand why you're seeking to settle on my grounds. Wouldn't it be easier to go to one of the Sanctuaries?"
She huffed, barely concealing her disdain.
"I would need to give up fighting. The others may not believe that I'm a proper Centaur, but I have earned my Cavalier's braids."
Did this mean that hair style was an indication of rank among Centaurs?
Severus pushed down his growing curiosity.
"Then why don't you find a free territory and create your own Herd?"
He wondered if she thought herself powerful enough to pass the Ritual.
She hit the ground with her left forward hoof in anger again. This time, Dhaal jumped on the ground and increased his size until he was taller than her.
They stared at each other, Manylion sizing him up in silence. Finally, she seemed to deflate.
"I have no wish to become a Stallion," she admitted, looking straight at Severus. "As I told you, that challenge was one last attempt to make them act instead of standing still. I don't want to create my Herd but I can't settle on a free territory without taking the risk of being challenged and cast away again. Hence my request to settle on your grounds."
Severus felt a sudden bout of giddiness at her words. She wanted to settle on his grounds!
And there was absolutely no reason that her plea should make him so happy, realised Severus, immediately thickening his mind potion fumes.
Searching his mind, he realised that both Nymphéa's and Pākiki's bond were leaking glee and excitement. Was this what it felt to be Marked?
Severus shook his head. Now was not the time to think about this.
The Centauress was looking at him warily, no doubt surprised at his behaviour.
"I hear what you are saying, but what will happen when you wish to have a family? Won't you need to find a Herd?" asked Severus, firmly pushing more fumes at his Bonds.
"I don't want a family," replied Manylion.
She had answered without hesitation, and yet... While she was hard to read, Severus felt like she was not as sure of herself on the subject as she appeared.
"Very well, why House Caspian then, and not the Potters or the Bones for example?" asked Severus, saying the first light or neutral House's names he could think of.
Centaurs were renowned for despising snakes after all.
She hesitated, her eyes glancing at Dhaal.
His Familiar had been surprisingly silent despite showing off his muscles. Severus Sensed neither concern nor excitement coming from him.
"I don't trust most beings, no matter their race," Manylion finally explained. "Hagrid is the one who pushed me to contact your Ansvar and make my plea. He said that you did not care about races and that your motto would work for me."
"Hagrid is the one who suggested that Manylion Outcast could become a member of House Caspian, the same way that his wizard father had adopted his giant wife into his House," intervened Tuei.
Severus felt his mind reel back as he understood Tuei's goal. She wanted the Centauress to become a full member of their House, not for her to create a Herd. He had not thought it possible. But something else made alarm bells ring in his mind.
"Did you belong to the Hogwarts' Herd?"
"I did," admitted the Centauress reluctantly.
Could she be a spy sent by Dumbledore? He could not believe that Tuei would fall for such a ruse. But what were the chances of this situation happening without the old man's input?
"Alright, I understand why you wish to integrate House Caspian, but what do you have to offer to my House?" asked Severus, trying to give himself some room to think.
She almost reared back on her hind limbs. Her nostrils flared but she quickly calmed herself down. When she answered, her voice was calm.
"Among my kind, I'm a Healer. I have studied with Masters from several magical kinds, and your Ansvar told me that you would not be opposed to supporting my learning more as long as I agreed to be the physician for House Caspian."
For the first time, her voice held a spark of interest. Severus was beginning to understand why Tuei had chosen her.
"What do you think?" he Sensed to Dhaal.
"She's interesting. And intriguing."
His Familiar was curious. He also seemed keen on giving her a chance.
"House Caspian currently boasts few members, but they come from various backgrounds and various races, Muggles included. Will that be a problem?" asked Severus plainly.
Manylion considered him for long seconds before answering.
"I told you, I don't like most people. That being said, I'm curious about who you have deemed worthy of integrating your House. Your motto holds a lot of promises."
That was a fair answer.
Severus nodded, his decision made.
"Here is what I propose. You will integrate House Caspian with a minimum Oath: your expertise as a Healer for all the members of the House in exchange for living on Caspian grounds. You will be free to ask for anything you require to make yourself home within reasonable costs. I will also support you in finding other Masters to further your healing knowledge. In a few months, we'll meet again to decide if our partnership is working, if we wish to further the Oath or on the contrary, wish to be free from it."
Manylion remained silent, analysing his words before hitting her right breast with her left fist.
"I accept your proposal, Lord Caspian."
Severus felt a wave of pride wash over him. Surprised, he followed the source of the feeling and found it originated from his Bond with Tuei. She returned his raised eyebrow with a sheepish smile.
Did the fact that he had acquired several Bonds at once change how they affected him? He needed to get the hang of it before he was overwhelmed.
Severus focused back on the Centauress.
"Let's draft our Oath."
Her newly assessing gaze was the only sign that he had surprised her.
The Oaths were quite straightforward to write. Soon, Severus had another Bond pulsing at the back of his mind.
Another distraction was the Magic buzzing under his skin, its power almost begging to be used. He really hoped that it would settle down quickly. It would not do to overreact during a meeting.
"I will show you the grounds so you can decide where you want to settle," said Tuei to Manylion.
"I will join you," Sensed Dhaal.
"I heard you," stated the Centauress, looking at him in surprise.
"You are House Caspian," answered Dhaal.
"I wasn't aware every member of House Caspian could hear you," Sensed Severus, unsure if he felt more irritated at not knowing or proud of his Familiar.
"I did not want to tell you until I was sure it wasn't only Tuei and Nymphéa," answered Dhaal, apology colouring his tone. "I can choose which member of our House will hear me."
"It's great news," said Severus, lightly petting the Thestral as he rubbed his head against Severus' chest before walking toward Tuei and Manylion.
Tuei was looking at them fondly while Manylion was studying them like a puzzle. Severus had the feeling the latter would either embrace the House or leave it with a crash, no middle ground allowed.
Tuei let Dhaal and Manylion step out of the office before turning to Severus.
"Master Severus has one last visitor, but he's not here for a plea to integrate House Caspian. Shall I send him in or do you want to wait for Dhaal to be back?"
"Send him in, please."
The sooner he met with this visitor, the sooner he could get back to the Horcruxes plan.
Tuei left his office with a light bow of her head. Seconds later, Severus was surprised to see Rhys come in, a younger Dwarf at his side.
"Thank you for agreeing to meet with us, Lord Caspian," said Rhys with a bow, the other Dwarf following suit. "This is my nephew, Brys from Colony Sturd."
"It's a pleasure to see you, Master Rhys, and to meet you, Brys," answered Severus, curious.
Master Rhys smiled knowingly.
"I have an offer which is a bit unusual between those who are not either Colony or Ally."
The Dwarf knew how to pique one's curiosity.
"I'm listening."
"Brys finished his general learning two years ago. From then on, he has studied with several Masters from our colony to find his field of speciality. However, our Brys is having difficulties finding something which captures his interest for more than a few weeks," explained Rhys, looking at the younger Dwarf with a mix of fondness, pride and exasperation. "Usually, we would have asked a Master from another colony to foster him, but he has strongly expressed interests which are not common among our close kin and allies."
He paused, hesitating for a brief instant.
"Dwarves seldom chose to study Potions in depth. We have what I would call our basics which our Healers consider to be enough coupled to the rest of our means to heal. Brys is very interested in Potions, and for the past two years, we've learnt that no other field holds as much passion for him."
From the younger Dwarf's wince, that knowledge had come painfully. Severus had the feeling that his colony had tried to find him a more acceptable field of study. He repressed a surge of anger at the idea of Brys being told not to pursue his passion. He was well aware of how lucky he was, free to study and research what he liked.
The more Severus learnt about other magical beings, the more it became clear that the field of Potions was mainly a Wizard field of interest. Even the Goblins did not seem to have a drive to improve and explore in this field. Severus had yet to decide if it was because most considered Potions a lesser domain of Magic or if it was because they had no affinity for it.
In the Dwarves' case, the latter option seemed the likeliest explanation.
Severus nodded.
"I understand better your presence here, except for the fact that there are many Masters more experienced than I am which would surely be more suited to teach Brys."
While his youth was not a problem at Hogwarts, even with the fifth years, Brys had to be older than the seventh years in Dwarves' years.
Rhys let out a warm laugh, eyes sparkling.
"Older than you, that's for sure, all of them are. But as creative and with the experience and desire to mix Potions with other magical fields in order to use them in the most efficient way? I don't think so."
Severus had to fight not to show any sign of both his pleasure and embarrassment at the high praise from such a Master.
The Dwarf kept speaking, unaware.
"Moreover, we take internships very seriously. For the time of his internship, Brys will be considered a member of the House of his Master. He will be your responsibility, but he will also need to abide by your rules. I believe that you are particularly well fitted to the task."
Severus turned his eyes to Brys, studying the younger Dwarf attentively. He met his gaze with determination and with barely any fidgeting.
"Would you mind letting me speak with Brys alone?" asked Severus.
"Alone?" repeated Rhys, clearly surprised.
"Yes, I would like to ask him a few questions without fearing that he will censure himself because of your presence," answered Severus.
Rhys looked at his nephew askance, who nodded back decisively.
"I will give you five minutes," agreed Rhys, patting the young Dwarf on the shoulder before leaving the room.
"What do you find interesting in Potions?" asked Severus, leaning forward to gaze at the young Dwarf intently.
Brys hesitated before answering with another question.
"Is it true one of House Caspian is a Muggle?"
"Yes," answered Severus.
Was it a pro or a con for him?
"I am very interested in Chemistry. Muggles use equations like in Transfiguration to describe, explain and predict how ingredients will react to each other and into what they will transform. I'm certain the same can be done to predict a potion result if we manage to include a magical variable," explained Brys, his face transformed by excitement.
"This is a truly admirable goal, but it will take years of research and experimentation, without any guarantee of success," answered Severus, trying to rein in his own excitement at the prospect of this kind of project.
Brys was definitely made for House Caspian if he was as rigorous as this project would require.
"I have studied on my own the past six years to learn Chemistry," replied the young Dwarf fiercely.
"How did you discover Chemistry?" asked Severus, curious.
Dwarves did not have Muggleborn-equivalents.
"During one of my general muggle courses," explained Brys. "During our general curriculum, we are required to attend one semester on Muggles, like we do for most races. And then, we must choose one muggle field to pursue for one semester during our final year of the general curriculum. I chose Chemistry."
This was exactly one of the courses that was lacking at Hogwarts: information on other beings.
Severus looked at Brys, considering his option. Refusing to foster him was unthinkable if he was as bright and curious as he appeared. However, this was a project far too big for a simple internship. What kind of intermediate subject could be interesting while guaranteeing that Brys would remain partnered with House Caspian after his internship while he pursued his research?
"This is the project of a lifetime, one that no Master can assign to you knowing it will take a lot longer than three years to achieve," finally said Severus.
He held up his hand to prevent Brys from interrupting him, feeling amused as the young Dwarf visibly squared his shoulders in anticipation for a battle to defend his capabilities.
"I would rather propose to you a project which is still quite ambitious but that gives you at least one chance of success," continued Severus. "Here is what I propose: you will study several sleeping potions, describe their ingredients chemically and see if any or all of the potions produce a reaction that creates the same active components for inducing sleep. You will begin with studying what already exists and what has already been done about merging Potions and specific areas of Chemistry such as Pharmacology and Toxicology, as well as trying to explain how Potions work with and without adding a variable specific to magic."
Severus had to fight not to laugh as the young Dwarf face's went through resignation, surprise then excitement.
"That sounds perfect!" exclaimed Brys, his hands moving as if he was itching to begin right now.
Severus could relate to the feeling.
"Of course, you shall first be tested on your knowledge of Chemistry and Potions. If you are not as skilled as you pretend to be, we will reevaluate your internship among House Caspian," stated Severus, looking Brys right in the eyes.
The young Dwarf did not even blink as he bowed in agreement, the glint in his eyes telling Severus that he needed to find someone really good at Chemistry, especially Pharmacology.
Learning it was on his to-do list, but while he had studied a couple of books on the subject along the years, he was well aware that they had only covered the basics and that he only knew enough to look the part and to know how ignorant he was. There was no way that he could master this field in a few months, especially with all his other projects.
Petunia had studied Chemistry for her medicine study. She certainly could help him test both Brys and any Chemistry Master he could find. He did not see Brys' internship beginning before Lord Voldemort was reunited with his Horcruxes or... Anyway, he would not need to hide his relationship with either his clan or Petunia and Lily anymore then.
Focusing back on the task at hand, Severus asked Brys to call Master Rhys back so that they could discuss the term of the internship. They spent almost thirty minutes debating terms before Severus called for Hoardrock to help.
Luckily, the Goblin was available and soon, they had reached an agreement.
Under the provision that Brys passed a Chemistry and Potion test designed by House Caspian, the young Dwarf would be integrated into House Caspian for a three years internship to study the subject Severus had proposed to him. Severus would be his main mentor, but House Caspian would also provide the young Dwarf a Chemistry mentor to support him. Every discovery made by Brys during his internship would be shared between him and House Caspian. At the end of his internship, if he chose to follow on studying both Chemistry and Potions, House Caspian would have priority on negotiating a partnership with Brys.
In exchange for House Caspian fostering Brys for three years, Master Rhys would provide his expertise in building homes for the members and helpers of House Caspian for a lesser fee than for usual customers.
Severus was surprised to feel a new Bond snapping into his mind when he signed the Contract. It was not as sharp and vibrant as his other ones, but it was enough to Sense Brys' presence easily when he was on Caspian's grounds. However, he was unsure that Brys was aware of the Bond as the young Dwarf had not shown any discomfort when the Bond had manifested.
Had it been the same for Drunek when Severus had been his apprentice? He definitely needed to deepen his understanding of Oaths. It already was on his to-do list.
Hoardrock left as soon as the Contract was signed, but not before congratulating Severus on the quality of his new House members and asking for a two hour meeting the next morning.
Master Rhys's eyes took on a calculating glint after the Goblin's departure, and Severus wondered what the Dwarf knew about Goblin politics.
His nephew clearly did not care about whatever was exciting his uncle's famed business intuition, brimming with excitement at the idea of finally working on his passion. They agreed on Brys taking his test in ten days and settling in House Caspian in fifteen, then Severus got up to accompany the two Dwarves outside the Manor.
Getting out of the office, they were met with the sight of several House Elves working together under Andromeda and Tuei's supervision in order to help the Tonks move from their previous home to the attic level of the manor until they had their own home on Caspian's grounds.
Severus recognised a few Malfoy House Elves, but others he had definitely never met.
"You are quite busy," stated Rhys, raising bushy eyebrows.
"As I told you, I have adopted my first helpers and House members, and we need to organise our living arrangements consequently," answered Severus, hiding his own amazement at the speed Tuei had managed to organise everything as he walked them toward the front door.
"True, but seeing it with my own eyes, I understand better why you will need my assistance so quickly. We will be in touch soon, Lord Caspian, to help my nephew settle in and to work on your members' home," promised the Dwarf.
"Thank you, Master Rhys. It's always a pleasure to work with your team," answered Severus with a light bow. "Apprentice Brys, I will see you in fifteen days time to begin your internship within my House. You may come by to begin settling yourself in any day before then."
"Thank you, Master," answered the young Dwarf with a marked bow. "I won't disappoint you."
Severus watched them leave with the disturbing feeling of being an impostor. To get an Apprentice so soon, with a project that Severus could only half help him with... But Rhys had seemed more than happy with their agreement.
Looking at his watch, Severus realised that it was far too early to call Petunia to ask her to help him with testing Brys and finding a suitable Chemistry or Pharmaceutical researcher to help him. Which reminded him that he needed to create communication stones for his House members and helpers, especially for Ted and Nymphéa. Putting this on his to-do-quickly list, Severus walked back to his office, smiling as he passed by Tuei and Andromeda arguing about where to best put an armoire owned by the Tonks.
"Master Severus!"
"Yes, Tuei?" answered Severus, stopping in his tracks.
"You have a letter," said his Ansvar, handing him said letter over.
"Thank you."
Severus smiled, recognising the handwriting as Fu-Hsi's. The Werewolf had written to him several times since Severus had left Kyirong, to either speak about the Lupacem or to ask him what he thought of one or another kind of potion experiment, usually linked to the substitution of one ingredient for another.
Their exchanges were quite enjoyable, and Severus looked forward to reading what he had come up with next.
Severus frowned as he noticed that the seal on the letter was different from Fu-Hsi usual ones. What did it mean?
Dear Lord Caspian,
I'm writing to you today as I find myself looking for a project to improve my potion making knowledge and hopefully earn the status of Potion Master Grade II.
Following our collaboration during your own end of Apprenticeship project, I thought I would greatly benefit from studying under you. Would you be amenable to considering taking me as an apprentice for a duration of two years minimum, to work on a project we would need to determine that would centre around building a method to better determine the conditions under which a plant must be grown, harvested and used depending on the property needed for a potion?
I look forward to hearing from you,
Yours sincerely
Fu-Hsi Nan from Pack Shiying
Well. That was unexpected, but not unwelcome. Now that Severus thought about it, Fu-Hsi had hinted several times that he would soon be looking for a kind of apprenticeship of his own. However, Severus would never have the time to supervise both Brys and Fu-Hsi. Plus, he considered Fu-Hsi as a friend. Would he be able to be as strict as necessary?
He thought so, but it was a point of concern. He really needed to find another Potion Master to hire if not adopt, the sooner the better. Which meant he had already decided to accept Fu-Hsi's proposal.
He shook his head to himself, reading the letter over again to make sure he had not overlooked any important nuance. He frowned as his eyes caught the date of the letter. The tenth of January. Two whole months ago.
"Tuei!"
"Yes, Master Severus?" answered his Ansvar, popping up close to him immediately.
He now knew her well enough to notice the slight square of her shoulders and the way her chin was lifted a bit higher than usual.
"Why is that letter dated from two months ago?"
"Tuei… Tuei felt that Master Severus was not settled into his role at the time but that it would be a failure to our House to refuse Pack Shiying's request of fostering one of their own. Our House needs every asset we can get. Tuei answered to the Pack that House Caspian would consider their request and give them an answer by the spring equinox."
From her flattened ears, Tuei was well aware that her behaviour was not acceptable. She was also certain to have made the right choice.
Severus took a deep breath, trying to push down the feeling of hurt and betrayal that rose through him.
"This is not acceptable Tuei, and you know this," stated Severus quietly. "You cannot hide letters or answer in my stead just because you think I won't make the right choice. If you don't trust me to listen to your advice before making my decision,..."
He could not bring himself to say that they would need to rethink her position as his Ansvar. She belonged with him, with House Caspian. Yet, if he could not trust her to trust him…
Tuei blinked, tilting her head in sudden realisation.
"Tuei… Tuei wanted to do what was best for House Caspian. Master Severus is still very young, and you are only beginning to find your footing as Lord Caspian. You are already so busy, Tuei did not want you to miss an opportunity just because the timing was not right. Tuei had not realised that Master Severus would feel so hurt."
She paused, wriggling her hands nervously.
"Tuei is very sorry Master Severus. Tuei trusts Master Severus, I would never have adopted you otherwise."
Her big round eyes were shining, looking at him with a mixture of feelings that were almost too much to face.
Severus took a step closer to her before kneeling, needing them to be on the same level.
"Tuei. I know I have much to learn, but I need you to trust that I will listen to you and that I will take my time to think about your advice before making any huge decisions for our House. You cannot go behind my back because you fear I won't agree with your assessment."
He sighed.
"There are things you are not aware of, because I am the Head of House Caspian. What you believe to be an opportunity for our House could very well be a disaster if you don't have the full picture."
His House Elf nodded slowly.
"It has been a long time since Tuei has served a House. I need to adjust too."
Severus let his eyes close in relief. It was just a lack of communication. Just a problem of each of them finding their place in their House.
He opened his eyes to find her looking hopefully at him. He held his hand out to her, offering her a small smile as she took it without any hesitation.
"I think we needed to have this discussion. Thank you Tuei for being honest with me. Do you think you can trust me to listen to you and make the best choice for our House?"
Tuei squeezed his hand with surprising force.
"Yes Master Severus."
Severus felt their bond flash for a brief second. Blinking, he turned his attention to the place it occupied within his mind. The bond felt sturdier, as if it was anchored more deeply than before.
"Master Severus should go to the training room to practice his Magic while I finish helping our House settle down for the night. There have been many changes today," said Tuei wisely.
Too many changes, yet Severus could not bring himself to regret it.
His House Elf certainly had the right idea, he needed to get used to the new power at his disposal. It might also help with the uncomfortable buzzing under his skin and the sensitivity of the Bonds.
Nodding to Tuei, Severus got up and went to his room to change into clothes he could afford to dirty or worse. Then he went to the training room.
He was not surprised to find Dhaal waiting for him.
"Keeping an eye on me?" asked Severus teasingly.
"Always. Someone needs to prevent you from overstretching past your limits," Sensed back his Familiar.
"Have you already mastered the boost of power?" asked Severus, curious.
"Not completely," admitted Dhaal. "I still use too much if I'm not careful, but only practice can help."
Severus nodded, patting him on the head.
"We'll get the hang of it. Now, you may want to close your eyes. I'll begin with Lumos."
His Familiar settled in the right corner closest to the door while Severus walked to the middle of the room.
Breathing deeply, Severus focused on his Sense, on the various magic flows around him and quickly lost his concentration in surprise.
"Why are there so many new flows?" asked Severus to Dhaal.
Severus did not spend his time watching his grounds' magic flow, but he knew them. At least, he had thought so. He knew that the flows had grown in strength after he had become Lord Caspian, but today, he Sensed many new tiny magic flows coursing the grounds.
"I don't know," answered the Thestral. "It's not unexpected with our new House members."
"But so soon?"asked Severus, aghast.
His Familiar only shrugged.
"You can ask Drunek or VokJung about it later. You don't have much time to practice before dinner."
Dinner with Lucius. Was his brother going to look at him with disgust because of the other night? Lucius had no qualms about using spells to harm other people if it was necessary to protect himself or his family. But torture was something else. And from the way Narcissa had spoken of his reaction and of Severus "severing people's legs", he feared that his brother did not approve of his action, not knowing everything that was at stake.
Sighing to himself, Severus pushed those dreadful thoughts into a cauldron and focused back on his immediate goal.
Again, he breathed deeply, focusing on his Sense, the Magic around and inside himself. Then, he thought about the spell he wanted to cast, visualising its results in his head, saying the incantation in his mind.
Lumos.
Severus blinked. The light was stronger than usual but it was not as blinding as it had been in Bǎo when he had first been able to Sense Air and Earth Magic.
Focusing on the light and his Sense, Severus tried to decrease the amount of Magic he was using until the light was so soft it was barely visible. Then he increased the amount of Magic he was using until the light was blinding, only letting it last a second before cutting the spell off.
That had been easy. Magic was still buzzing under his skin.
For the next hour, Severus reviewed a big part of his spells list, levitating, shredding, exploding and generally demolishing target after target. He was amazed at the amount of Magic he could use without breaking a sweat. Then he went on to Transfiguration spells. Sensing had helped a lot with Transfiguration, but this new power made it dangerously easy. Could their House's power be another reason why Purebloods usually were better than Muggleborns at Transfiguration?
Severus jotted it down in a corner of his mind then cast a quick Tempus. He was almost late. Time truly flew when one was having fun. At least, he felt a bit more settled despite still feeling Magic calling at him to be used. He did not think he risked overreacting and blasting someone for taking him by surprise anymore.
Severus quickly went upstairs to wash and put more presentable clothes on. He then used a tiny bit of flow-travel to glide down the stairs and reach the floo, calling out to Dhaal in the meantime.
To his surprise, his Familiar told him that he would remain at Caspian Manor that evening. The Thestral was quick to reassure him that he only wanted to remain close by for Nymphéa's second night at the manor, and told Severus to enjoy his time with the Malfoys.
On a whim, Severus decided to flow-travel outside Malfoy Manor's entrance. After his training, he was curious to check the flows of the Malfoy's grounds. It would also give him a few minutes to prepare himself for Lucius' potential coldness.
As he walked toward Malfoy Manor's main entrance, Severus stretched his Sense to examine the grounds. He was not surprised to find they were crossed by many flows which all seemed far stronger than those coursing Caspian's ground. The Malfoy House was old, and Malfoy Manor was its heart. However, Severus was a bit surprised that in comparison to House Caspian, the difference in the number of flows was not that high.
Did the number of flows increase at the creation of a House then stabilised after a few years? It would mean that the difference between an old and a new House would be more in the strength of their flows, with their intensity growing or waning with time depending on the vitality of the House's members. Unless the number of flows increased or decreased depending on the Alliances of the House, or on the kind of beings that composed the House?
Another subject of research, thought Severus, amused at himself. Mòr might have interesting knowledge about this.
He did not have the time to knock at the main door before Pelly opened it.
"Mister Severus is going to catch a cold, walking in that weather," chided the House Elf. "It's not because you can do Magic to warm yourself that you should not put on warmer clothes! Why didn't you take the floo?"
"Good evening Pelly," answered Severus, feeling a bit sheepish.
He had completely forgotten to put a coat on.
Pelly shook her head in fond disapproval, ushering Severus inside. She led him to the living room, where Narcissa and Lucius sat on a plush carpet, their back to the fireplace as they tried to get Draco to crawl on all fours instead of just scooting around on his stomach by enticing him to follow a bright blue butterfly.
Severus was impressed when his godson immediately Sensed his arrival, turning his head in his direction before Pelly had the time to announce him. Draco made an unintelligible sound then began a quite fast 'crawl' for such a small being moving mostly on four limbs toward Severus.
Chancing a glance at Lucius, Severus was relieved to see that his brother sported a fond look as he watched them both.
Draco stopped at Severus' feet, holding his arms out to be held while he looked at Severus with the certainty that his wish would be granted. Smiling, Severus bent down and scooped him up with ease.
Who would have thought that holding a baby could become so natural for him?
"Good evening Severus," greeted Narcissa with a smile as she and Lucius walked up to them, his brother holding her by the shoulders.
"Good evening Brother," echoed Lucius, infusing the last word with his usual warmth.
"Narcissa, Lucius. Thank you for having me tonight," answered Severus, smiling almost shyly.
"You know it's always our pleasure. The Manor sometimes feels empty now that you have your own home," said Lucius wistfully, squeezing Severus' shoulder briefly.
"True," confirmed Narcissa, moving to take Draco from Severus despite her son's protests. "Now I'll let you men have fun tonight, I have my own sister to meet with."
Severus stared as she swiftly disappeared with her son. He heard her floo to Caspian Manor and met Lucius' own stunned gaze.
"Did she invite me to dine with you only to invite herself to my home?" asked Severus slowly.
"It appears so," answered Lucius thoughtfully.
He better understood why Dhaal had remained home tonight. Was Tuei part of the plot as well?
He felt a burst of gratitude towards his family. It had been a long time since he and Lucius had been able to spend time with just the two of them without speaking of Heads of House's duty and other such delightful business.
"Well, come on, Brother. We can't begin a boys' night without a nice drink. What will you have tonight? Your usual red Porto?"
"Yes, please," answered Severus, settling himself in what had become his armchair when he had spent the summer at the manor.
He was forever grateful that Narcissa had not made obvious changes to the furniture of the room.
Lucius handed him his glass then poured himself a glass of whisky before sitting in his own armchair, situated in front of Severus'.
Severus took a sip of his drink, enjoying its slightly sugary taste as well as steeling himself for the coming talk. He had the feeling that his brother was doing the same.
"I heard you adopted your first House members," said Lucius lightly.
"Narcissa and Andromeda made compelling arguments. Tuei and Dhaal were already convinced," answered Severus with a rueful smile.
"I'm glad. They needed the protection of a House, but the Malfoy motto did not suit them."
"I didn't know you had offered," remarked Severus.
His brother had been willing to risk the wrath of his in-laws. Severus was impressed.
"I told Narcissa she could discuss it with Andromeda unofficially when she became Draco's Godmother," replied Lucius wryly. "I'd been the Head of House Malfoy long enough to withstand the Black's fury, and Narcissa is close to Regulus, the Blacks' darling, so we did not expect their disapproval to last for long. But it was a moot point. I trust that you've taken your precaution."
"They will be living on Caspian's grounds from now on," answered Severus. "And I may have adopted a few other helpers."
Lucius let out a surprised laugh.
"You don't do things by half."
Severus shrugged.
"My House needed more power now that I'm not the only one at risk. And Tuei is the best Ansvar."
Lucius smiled.
"To each House its needs and Ansvar."
They toasted in silent agreement, Severus feeling himself relax with the alcohol in his system and the warmth of the fire seeping through his body. The silence stretched between them, comfortable.
"What happened during that meeting?" finally asked Lucius.
"What do you mean, Brother?" answered Severus, purposely willing Lucius to be blunt for once.
Lucius met his gaze squarely.
"You know that torture is not my favourite hobby, contrary to some of my in-laws. But I know as well as you do that it can be a necessary evil."
Severus nodded.
"McMahon... I'd met him only twice before, and the first time was during the enquiry after Father's death. You should have seen him. So disdainful. So certain that Father had planned to kill those Muggles and kidnap the children to brainwash them into being perfect little evil Slytherins. I am always so thankful that you were not available at that time. You would have killed him."
That was not what Severus had expected to hear tonight. He knew he had been lucky to have his goblin family then. He had not truly understood how much pressure his brother had been under at the time.
"He summoned me to interrogate me in the hope of finding the proof of, I quote, "your deviant Father's sordid plan". I was lucky that Mister Blomsky, Father's solicitor, was with me at the time."
If McMahon had been facing him now, Severus would have hurt him deeply.
Lucius laughed softly.
"I had never been so happy to see Moody enter a room. He came in, stated that Father was innocent and that there was no proof of any wrongdoing on his part. You know, I've never liked him, but I've respected him since that day. You did not spare him that night."
"I know," sighed Severus. "I didn't mean to sever his leg, only to cut it deep enough to bleed and impress on him the seriousness of what was happening. I was a bit too… enthusiastic."
"You were so angry when he escaped," said Lucius, staring distantly into the air. "I met with Evan and Jonathan several times during your Apprenticeship, on various occasions. They told me tales of your temper which is apparently famous among the students who knew you at Hogwarts after your first year. They were worried that it would put a strain on your relationship with your Master if you encountered difficulty. I didn't understand what they meant until that night."
"Of course I was angry after Moody escaped," stated Severus, wondering how to find the right balance to help Lucius without disclosing all his secrets. "What kind of idiots doesn't search such a famous Auror thoroughly?"
"But you were more than angry, Brother. I had never seen you so… cold. Your voice was sharp enough to cut diamonds, and we could all feel your Magic crackle, ready to unleash on the ones responsible for your fury. You did not look like yourself."
"I… did not truly feel like myself," admitted Severus.
It was not a lie. Occlumency had a way of stripping someone from his humanity if you were not careful. He hoped the admission would be enough for his brother to confide in him.
Lucius leaned towards him abruptly.
"So you felt it? There was something... alien pushing us. You know, I don't regret the torture, McMahon had it coming a thousand times but… What I felt doing it unsettled me."
This was it. The moment of truth.
"Do you remember what you told me when I came back and you could only feel my presence in the manor because we were family?" asked Severus.
Lucius nodded wordlessly, his eyes slitted as he tried to understand where Severus was leading him.
"I think Abraxas' theory about people creating magical links between those they care for is right. The Death Eaters are strongly linked together despite the disagreement that can exist between us. So I think that when we are all together, we… influence each other, for better or for worse," explained Severus, watching his brother closely.
Lucius shivered.
"But it's only supposed to happen with people we care strongly about. Why would my Magic form that kind of bond with Rodolphus or Mulciber?"
Severus shrugged, trying to convey that he was working on suppositions while hoping that Lucius would believe in his explanation.
"We are also linked together by the Marks and the coins. Is it so strange to think that coupled with the time we are all spending together, those pre-existing links helped our Magics form these kinds of family bonds?"
Lucius shook his head slowly.
"You're right. It's the only thing that makes sense. I should not be surprised that the most extreme feelings are those we would feel the most strongly. How could we protect ourselves from this influence?"
Severus could see his brother's brain churning, checking everything he knew that could help him.
"Well, you know that the Patronus is to protect yourself from outside influence, so I would begin with this, what do you think?" asked Severus, heart beating fast and fingers crossed in the hope that Lucius would not turn down this solution.
"Using your Patronus in this configuration?"
Lucius hummed thoughtfully.
"You're right, it could work. I should ask Narcissa if she knows of other applications of the Patronus specific to Healers that could be close to our situation."
It actually was a very good idea, especially now that Narcissa knew the Patronus trick. His brother was no fool, thought Severus relieved, suddenly feeling a weight coming off his shoulders.
"I'm not the one who's going to tell you not to ask advice from your wife," he said at Lucius, earning a bright laugh.
"Clever man," answered Lucius, eyes suddenly sparkling with mischief. "Now, are you ready for our first game of chess since you came back? I must see if your Apprenticeship finally taught you patience."
"I'm in," answered Severus with the hint of a challenge in his voice, glad to let the heavy subject drop now that he had been able to warn Lucius even if in a roundabout way.
He had learnt a trick or two from playing against VokJung in Kyirong. And even then, he had already improved from his last game against Lucius by the simple virtue of finally being patient enough to think multiple steps ahead and to set up a trap in more than three moves.
Lucius called up for Bink to bring them food they could eat while playing, an indulgence Severus had enjoyed a few times during his stay with Abraxas and Lucius while studying for his NEWTs.
Lucius set up the game on a small table between their armchairs, the food on two other small tables on either side of them. To Severus' delight, the parts of the chess set remembered him and were happy to see if he had grown into a better player.
In the end, Lucius won the game but with enough struggle that he congratulated Severus on finally living up to his slytherin potential. Afterward, his brother enticed Severus into a game of Wizards Unite, a board game that had all the players band together to beat the game and prevent the mad Dark Wizard from taking over the world. It was a very popular game among Slytherins as it required planning and strategy, though they always named the imaginary villain Dumbledore. Severus had not played often, but for now, he had never faced a Dumbledore with the same plan twice.
Narcissa came back home a bit before midnight, Draco asleep in her arms. She put him to bed then joined Severus and Lucius to finish the game with them. Afterwards, Severus hugged them tightly, without forgetting to thank Narcissa for her plotting, then bid them goodbye, well aware that the next day was going to be as busy as the previous ones.
That night, Severus went to sleep with a lighter heart and magic buzzing under his skin.
