As flames continued to consume Willow's memories, Amity snatched the last two photographs off of the line that hadn't yet caught fire. "I knew I should have practiced that flame spell more!" she cursed herself, knowing full well that her fine control of the spell still needed work after she had used it to clear out the greenhouse of pixies and nearly burned off her eyebrows in the process. "Maybe I can…" she said, tracing a spell circle in the air in an attempt to control the flames that she had created, but they only seemed to flare up instead, causing embers to drip onto the desk. "Ah!"

Amity hurriedly swept a number of other photos off of the desk to keep them safe; a mixture of undeveloped images of random objects like hands, furniture, and plants and demons that Willow had likely seen, but held little connection to. Some of them had already begun to melt, though their placement had protected images of Luz's memories that had been underneath. For a moment, Amity paused to stare at some of them despite the growing flames around her. A much younger Luz with long braided hair that stuck out in various directions, a family photo of Luz with a pair of adults that Amity had to assume were her parents, and an image of… Amity. The picture had been on the bottom of the pile, and depicted a memory that Luz must have from the Bonesborough Library during their encounter with a feral Otabin, brought to life by the Wailing Star comet.

The growing warmth of the burning pictures snapped her back to reality and she absentmindedly stuffed Luz's memory into her pocket for safe keeping. Willow's memories that were still on the desk had begun to melt, including pictures of Luz covered in abomination goo and Augustus sharing his lunch with her as she sat alone in the cafeteria. In desperation, Amity tried to save what she could by continuing to blow on the pictures she had managed to rescue to put out the smoldering corners when the door to the class room burst open and Augustus charged in. "Hexside Free Press!" he shouted, brandishing a notepad and pencil. "What's going on here?!"

Amity looked up sheepishly at Augustus and Luz and frowned. "Hi…" she said quietly.

Luz stepped forward, taking in the smokey interior of the classroom before confronting Amity, gasping at the collection of photographs that were now fully turned to ash behind her. "You destroyed Willow's memories?!" she shouted in disbelief.

"I… I saved as many as I could!" Amity replied, holding up the two remaining pictures from off the line. A single blowing ember that had fallen from the string and was still burning twisted in the air and landed on them, sending them blazing, and Amity dropped the remaining ashes from the heat. "Ugh! Why would they make memories so flammable?!"

Still in the doorway of the classroom, Willow leaned against the doorframe with an awkward smile on her face; her eyes appearing larger than usual behind her glasses, and inspecting her fingers as though seeing them for the first time. "Have I always had this crazy thing?" she asked to no one in particular before slapping her hand across her own face a few times. She stumbled past Augustus and stood between Luz and Amity, throwing an arm over both of their shoulders and giggling. "I can tell we're gonna be good friends!" she announced in a sing-song voice before losing strength in her legs and falling between them.

"Gus, can you put out the fires?" Luz asked, bending down to sling one of Willow's arms over her shoulders and lifted her up and glaring at Amity. "Why would you do this?"

"It was an accident!" Amity insisted.

"You accidentally came into a class you didn't have and set a fire?" she replied, clearly not convinced. "Come on, help me with Willow."

"But…"

"Look, I don't know what went on between you two, but she needs our help."

"I…" Amity started, her mind racing. Where would they go? She was going to miss classes again, and she had a test in Abominations Assemble that afternoon. If her parents found out she cut class to help Willow… "I…" but Luz was already walking away, struggling to carry the unconscious Willow toward the classroom door. She was helping her friend, who was a social outcast at Hexside, with no thought as to how it would benefit or hinder her. Amity caught up to Luz, pulling Willow's other arm around her shoulders. "Where are we going? I don't think the nurses office is equipped to handle this."

"Then we'll have to go to the only place that is." Luz smiled, her accusatory look from earlier having given way to one of gratitude so quickly that Amity wasn't sure what to expect. Luz didn't seem to hold any grudge toward Amity for her behavior at the Covention, or even Boscha's attitude toward Willow earlier that day while Amity stood by. Luz was… better than her, and she resented the human for it.

The four of them were halfway out of Bonesborough before Amity realized exactly where their destination was. "What makes you think the Owl Lady can help?" she asked, regretfully watching Willow bump into trees along their path while Luz carefully tried to steer her friend clear of the obstacles. It was mid afternoon now, and Amity couldn't help but think of her missed classes and what sort of punishment she was in for when she got home. She wouldn't be able to use pixies, or body swaps, or extinct monsters as excuses this time, and if her parents discovered she had missed half a day to help Willow Park…

"Eda's the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles." Luz replied, pulling Willow away from a snapping shrub that she had accidentally conjured and was trying to bite her. "If anyone can help Willow, it'll be her."

Amity rubbed the back of her neck nervously as The Owl House came into view. "Who said she was the most powerful witch on the Isle?" she asked, thinking of any number of witches such as the Coven heads, and the Emperor himself that were far more powerful.

Luz shrugged. "Well, mainly just her. But I've seen her do some crazy stuff! Like this one time, she cast this body swap spell downtown when the Emperor's Guard were going to arrest her…"

Amity's head snapped to the side at the mention of a body swap spell and guards. "Wait, what?"

"Amity, would you consider yourself interesting, accomplished, and noteworthy?" Augustus, or Gus as Luz called him, asked while distractedly chewing on the end of his pencil. He had been following them all the way from the photography classroom after helping to put out the fire. He hadn't been too inclined to activate the fire suppression system as apparently that could lead one into detention.

"What? I… I don't really know. Maybe?" she asked, feeling suddenly uncomfortable with the question. "I'm not sure this is really the best time for an interview after the photography class almost burned down."

"Right. That would definitely be noteworthy…"

"But not really something I'd like in the news."

"Right." Gus noted, catching on. "Because you fried Willow's brain, right?"

Amity frowned, stepping away from the boy and closer to Luz as they approached the lone house perched on the cliff overlooking Bonesborough. It was an oddly shaped house, with white stucco and narrow windows seemingly placed at random on its face on each floor. A large circular window on the top floor, filled with stained glass in the shape of a slit pupil eye caused Amity to glance twice as she was certain that she saw it blink as they got closer. Deep blue shingles protected the roof in a curved A-Frame style with a similar awning that covered the wooden front door, supported by a wooden beam on either side of what looked to be a decorative owl shaped face adorning the door. Her gaze climbed high as an ancient, dilapidated stone tower rose up behind the house, overshadowing the house's chimney, with thick red vines climbing up its side.

"Hooty!" Luz called. "Get Eda! Willow's memories were set on fire and she needs her help!"

The owl like face stretched out from its place on the door, causing Amity to pause for a moment. She recognized the creature as a house demon; a being that was rare nowadays since the end of the savage ages as manufactured homes became more mechanically built. She knew several of the very old households in Bonesborough still had house demons, but they had a habit of becoming a bit chaotic after several millennia of remaining stationary. The light brown feathered face extended impossibly far, meeting Luz face to face. "Hey Luz!" it said in a grating, high pitched and clown-like voice. "You're home early! Who's your new friend?" it asked, floating over to come uncomfortably close to Amity's face.

"Luz?" Amity asked, extending her index fingers in preparation to defend herself.

"Hooty!" Luz called, snapping her fingers to get the demon's attention. "Willow needs Eda's help."

Hooty turned up his beak, looking insulted. "Fine! But I insist on a formal introduction in the future!" he announced, retracting back into the front door and opening inward. "Eda! Luz needs your help again!"

The familiar thin witch with the plume of grey hair and wearing a torn red dress appeared casually at the door. "Aren't you home a little early, kid?" she asked, stepping outside. "Or did you decide to drop out already?" she said with a hopeful smile.

"Sorry, Eda." Luz said, pulling Willow by the hand up to the house. "You're the only one I could think of that could help Willow."

The Owl Lady looked Willow up and down, curling a lip as she tried to surmise what the problem was. "Got into the apple blood, huh? Well, it's never too early to start. Get her a glass of demon wing sauce, rectis pepper, millipeppers, and multifidus seed. She'll be sober in no time."

"Eda! She hasn't been drinking." Luz replied, now being dragged herself by Willow charging into the house. "Amity set her memories on fire in photography class and now she can barely remember how to walk!"

Gus walked in after them, clearly still distracted and Amity followed in behind, cautiously eyeing Hooty as his eyes followed her like one of the old paintings in the Manor. She winced in shame at Luz's accusation, despite how accurate it was, and frowned as she crossed the threshold of the house. There was a pungent scent that assaulted her nose, wafting through the living room that smelled of dusty furniture, pet hair, and day old food that had been left out. The inside was surprisingly bright though, with a warm atmosphere when compared to the Manor. A large, two handed morning star slid to the side when the door closed behind her, landing with a heavy thud that made her jump. A long couch sat against the right wall, with an assortment of weapons, various skulls, and other junk surrounding a centrally hung Wanted poster for the Owl Lady and her tiny demon companion, who was snoring soundly on the far end of the couch.

A light green chaise sat against the far wall beside an archway that led into the hall, with torn cushions and the same decorative eye engraved into its frame that could be seen throughout the room. A low coffee table was in easy reach of both seats with a crystal ball and scattered tomes strewn about on it. Amity continued to look about the room, noting the crackling fireplace to her left in the center of the wall with shelves over filled with more random items that, although still seemed like junk, were piquing her curiosity. Many of the objects were things that Amity didn't necessarily recognize outside of being described in the Good Witch Azura series. They were clearly from the Human Realm, and Amity struggled to keep herself from inspecting them further, crossing her arms and stepping closer to Luz. "So… this is the Owl House."

"Yup." Luz answered, protectively watching Willow as she stumbled about the room.

"And you… sleep here?" Amity asked, catching the illuminated owl motif on the ceiling that was glowing gold and providing a warm light to the entire room in addition to many candles that were lit and melting, dripping wax down the walls.

Luz's gaze grew distant at the question, as though she had certainly experienced a few encounters in the house. "When the night critters allow me to." she said, before shaking herself out of her memories.

Eda watched Willow stumble around the room as well before turning to Luz and Amity and sighed. "So, you set Willow's memories on fire and erased everything. Even minor damage can have huge effects!"

The three of them turned to watch Willow bump into the couch and stop with the same smile a witchling has when taking their first steps. "Ah! A chair for sitting!" she announced, bending over onto the couch before lifting herself up into an upside down position.

"Yep, her brain's burned up good. Damage like that can change everything about a person." Eda explained, as though she had seen this behavior before. "Willow may never be the same."

Willow rolled over on the couch, sweeping her legs over King before finally finding herself in a proper sitting position. "I got it!" she exclaimed excitedly, then noticed the snoozing little demon beside her. "Oh! A furry fruit!" she said, roughly picking up the skull topped creature and pulling on the scruff on the back of his neck. "I'm gonna peel it!"

"What?!" King asked in surprise as he was awakened at being manhandled. "What is happening?!"

Eda quickly spun a spell circle that struck Willow in a familiar gold ring. "Nap time." she said casually, causing Willow to let go of King and curl up on the couch, instantly dozing off.

King shrugged and crawled to the other end of the couch to curl up at Willow's feet. "Ah, sleep spell."

"I didn't cast it on you!" Eda said, placing her hands on her hips disapprovingly.

King waved the comment away. "Yeah, who cares?" he replied, dozing off as well.

Luz turned back to Eda now that Willow was out of danger. "Is there anything we can do?"

"There is one way, but it's terribly dangerous and partially illegal." Eda answered with a cautious tone before grinning. "So you're in the right place!" she continued, pumping her arms excitedly. "I'll send you into her mind to fix the damage."

Luz seemed to glow with the answer, a smile spreading from ear to ear. "Be still my fantasy loving heart! I have always wanted to do this!" she shouted. "Thank you, Boiling Isles!"

Eda's tone turned to one of warning. "It won't be easy. You have a lot to fix in there, 'cause it's a mess." she explained, turning to look directly at Amity. "Yep. Whoever did this to Willow showed unbelievable disregard for her safety." she said, and Amity couldn't meet her eyes. "Downright despicable. Oh, right. It was you." she added, pointing a long nailed finger into Amity's chest. "Anyways; Luz, who's going inside with you?"

Suddenly, the front door swung open and Hooty's high pitched voice entered the room. "Maybe I can help! I'm pretty good at getting stuck inside people's heads!" he admitted.

"This is someone's brain, not a night club!" Eda retorted, magically slamming the door shut again and turning back to Luz. "Two max."

Amity and Luz both looked at Gus, who was pacing in front of a display board he had conjured with various pictures pinned to it, and a web of red lines connecting each one to different traits. It was clearly a thought board relating to whatever school report he was working on; a technique Amity had used to organize her thoughts for school work as well. He was mumbling to himself in a panic before stopping at a stack of dark covered books that were oozing dark energy. As he got close to touching the stack, red eyes opened and glared at him; the books hissing with forked bookmarks that made the boy jump back.

"Gus… has a lot on his plate." Luz said in disappointment. She turned to Amity with a confusingly hopeful, but still accusing look. "Amity, you have to go with me."

Amity looked away in self pity, still unable to hold anyone's gaze. "Willow might not want me in there." she said. How did Boscha manage to cause such messes for other people and continue on guilt free? She wasn't certain that she wanted to, but at the moment she felt so terrible that being rid of her conscience would be something she would wish for.

"You set everything in there on fire!" Luz shouted, pointing back at Willow. "You have to help!"

Amity shrunk back from Luz, feeling uncharacteristically shy, and she sighed. "Okay, I'll do what I can." She looked down as Luz held out her hand for Amity to take and she hesitated, slowly uncrossing her arms. Her hand was… inviting, and she felt herself warm to the idea, fogging her mind for a moment. She reached out and took Luz's hand, feeling its warmth and grip, noting the size and color difference and holding back the smile that threatened to show on her face.

The sweet moment was harshly interrupted by Eda. "Alright! Bold choice, taking the girl who caused the mess." She casually drew another gold circle in the air, conjuring a small golden service bell and handed it to Luz. "When you're done, ring that and I'll cast you back." she instructed before an extra thought came to her. "Oh, and keep an eye out for her 'Inner Willow'. She's the gatekeeper of emotions and memory. She might help you." Eda began moving her fingertips in an impressive pattern to string lines of gold magic that caused a ring of energy beneath Amity and Luz's feet that encased the pair in light. "Now here we go!"

Amity felt her body break down into light, similar to a teleportation scroll that she had used before. But Luz's grip on her hand tightened with the experience for a moment before their energy intermingled and the inside of the Owl House blurred and then vanished into darkness.
