Chapter 2

Foxkit rolled over, blinking the tiredness out of her eyes. She got to her feet and stretched. Twistedbranch, Darkkit, and Lightkit were still asleep. Moving forward slowly and quietly, as not to disturb anyone, she padded out of the nursery. Dawn patrol must have just left. Risingdusk was sitting in a corner of camp conferring with Swiftstar. The kit studied them for a second and then went in the opposite direction.

" Whatcha doing out of the nursery this early? " a voice said, sounding tired. Foxkit spun around and promptly lost balance. A short brown tabby she cat stared at her, whiskers twitching. Foxkit stumbled to her paws.

" I couldn't sleep. Should I go back? " she asked.

" I honestly don't care as long as it isn't dangerous or against the warrior code. " the cat said. Foxkit tried to think of the cat's name.

" That's nice… umm.." Foxkit looked at her paws trailing off.

" Leafpaw. " the tabby said sitting down. Foxkit looked at Leafpaw's amber eyes. Leafpaw. Fitting. She thought. Foxkit stretched a little and started shaking out her paws.

" Well I'm Foxkit!" She replied, looking down Leafpaw shook herself. " Well, nice meeting ya. " she said, padding away. Foxkit gazed around before sitting down and staring at the sunrise to the best of her ability. A cool breeze ruffled her fur.

Foxkit batted a rock around camp, looking at the apprentices talking. Leafpaw had left to go on patrol with Whiteapple, which in Foxkits' opinion was a weird name. Whiteblaze would have been a much better name, but she wouldn't say that out loud. No need to offend the leader or Whiteapple for no reason. Nightpaw did a twirl in the air, catching Foxkits' attention again.

" Today I have my assessment! " he said excitedly and a bit loudly. The two other apprentices congratulated him, at least that's what it looked like they were doing. Foxkit had lost all attention to the rock she was battling around and walked away. She said an elder staring at her and stopped, returning the stare. The elder turned around and went back in their den. Foxkit rolled her eyes. Apprentices were usually annoyed with elders and their nonstop talk about how in their younger days, young cats would treat their elders with respect. Ah. How ironic. She thought walking back towards the nursery. Lightkit and Darkkit raced out of the nursery, Lightkit almost running Foxkit over. Foxkit skittered out of the way just in time with a weird noise, faintly similar to a hiss. Darkkit shot her an apologetic look before continuing to chase after his sister. Twistedbranch exited the nursery and watched Lightkit and Darkkit play before walking off to Foxkit.

" Why don't you go play with them? " she suggested, trying to keep the hope out of her voice. Foxkit sat down and lowered her ears. Well Lightkit is a stuck up jerk and never lets anyone choose the game or make the rules.s She thought.

" It's fine Twistedbranch…" Foxkit said 'I could play with them later though." She quickly added when Twistedbranch let out a defeated sigh. Twistedbranch shook herself, and gave Foxkit a pained smile before hobbling off. Foxkit watched Twistedbranch leave. Did I offend her? She thought, glancing at her paws. The kit turned away from the nursery and darted off to find something to do. She would rather not sit around camp all day, thank you very much. Her gaze flicked around camp boredly, ears drooping. She decided to trot over to the fresh kill pile. Maybe she could eavesdrop on the two cats that just grabbed prey from the fresh kill pile. She tried to look like she was searching for prey, even though she wasn't really hungry though.

" ...eclan tried to take a bit of our territory!" One of the cat's were saying. It took Foxkit a few seconds to realize a patrol had just come back. She saw wounds on the cat that was talking. Foxkit never understood the fuss over territory, especially since there was MORE land around them. Would it really be such a great loss? Iceclan might think of them as weak though.

Foxkit realized that she was thinking about things that were much too far out of what she should be thinking. She winced and grabbed a mouse from the pile, for Twistedbranch. She raced over to the nursery and poked her head in. Twistedbranch was… was… Foxkit didn't know what Twistedbranch was doing. She walked in, enjoying how the nursery felt a bit cooler.

" Twistedbranch I got you a mouse. " Foxkit said, trying to sound cheerful. Twistedbranch stopped and turned towards Foxkit. She purred.

" Thank you!" Twistedbranch said, shaking her fur.

" You're welcome!" Foxkit felt a bit happier now, as if a small weight had been lifted off her. " Also, not to be rude or anything, but what were you doing? " the fox kit asked, tipped her head.

" Humming, dear. " Twistedbranch said, shifting her weight. " I like humming. "
