Pausing mid-stride the suited man cast a glance over his shoulder. A grin slowly formed on his face as he turned on his heel. With a gloved hand, he pulled a silver smartphone from his chest pocket. In a silver flash, his Digimon partner appeared behind him.
With an audible hum, the Sentai Digimon dashed through the street. Mere seconds after the superhero rushed after a silver bullet train barreled through the street. As it passed the wheels dug through the faded asphalt. The shard of the concrete material flying through the air as it rushed like a bullet. With a chuckle of excitement, the blonde man brushed his hair back with his gloved hand.
"It's been a long time since something interesting has happened hasn't partner?" He asked
Running along walls the scarf-wearing Digimon chased the vehicle turned torpedo. As best he could Mr. Knight followed the chase. The train Digimon was forced to a stop as a golden arrow hit it.. With a puzzled expression, the railway Digimon watched as a woman approached. Her steps were slow her boots dragging slightly as if too heavy for her. Raising a rose-colored Digivice an Angewomon appeared on her side.
She said nothing her messy Fushia hair bouncing as she nods. Another arrow pierced the train. On impact, the railway Digimon dissolved into code. As it vanished she lifted her sand coated goggles from her eyes.
"Too slow Edward." She muttered smiling tiredly
"No, you were just early as usual Julia." Mr. Knight replied with a dry laugh
Slowly he removed his shades a subtle smile on his lips. As he stepped closer fatigue hit. All energy spent she slumped collapsing. Before she could hit the ground he was holding her. Cradling her like a princess he smiled in relief.
At the sound of clicking heels, he turned to see Angewomon. The Digimon angel tilted her head curiously. Placing a hand on her partner's arm she frowned faintly. Speaking with a sorrowful voice she turned to him.
"We would rather not discuss our time on the expedition Mr. Knight." Angewomon murmured
"The expedition" that she spoke was yet another human journey to the Digiworld. They had sent the travelers years ago. It was only supposed to be a three-month journey. After the first week, they had lost visual contact. Then shortly after radio contact was lost. They had no means of reaching them for retrieval. They were believed to be dead by the organization.
"What happened there is not my business, I'm more concerned with why they're attacking us," Mr. stated
Sometime later the suited man found himself slumped on the floor. He sat on his living room floor face forlorn. In one hand he held a half-empty beer. In the other a photo from years gone by. The photo was of himself with his friends. The aged photo was speckled with tear stains. They were just high school students and the universe made them protect the earth. Forcing his tears back he downed the remains of his beer.
His gaze moved to his ceiling as his mask shattered. His body shook as he sobbed letting out his sadness for the first time in years. A hand on his cheek caused his body to jerk. Slowly he came face to face with Julia. Clad in a loose-fitting set of pajamas she knelt over him. The pajamas were black with red blue and green stripes. The outfit was finished off by a pair of black plush slippers fair too big for her.
"What would the other DigiChampions thinks of their leader balling like a baby?" She teased with a frown
"That's the funniest thing I've heard in a while. In some form or another, the Digichampions lost it's members." He grumbled with a dry laugh
"I don't understand." She whispered stepping back
"Julia our friends either died in battled or abandoned us after they lost their partners. Being a Digidestined isn't a permanent job like everything it has a ticking clock." He stated in a matter of fact tone
Tilting his head he motioned to a golden glow. At his side sat a chrome digivice. Around the screen, golden tick marks glowed in the darkness. They appeared to be a counter of some sort he had yet to figure out what it was counting down.
With a whimper she let herself fall into his lap. Hugging her close he told himself he would keep her safe. She had just come back into his life he would be damned if he lost her.
