God, if it was not one thing it was another.
First there was a new witch uniting and leading the Expression witches to their cause, and now his brother had been keeping the magical preserved body of their mother safe for the past thousand years and she just so happened to be a little homicidal. Kol sighed and then flipped open his phone. He needed to make sure that all their information was good. In a few quick clicks Kol had managed to confirm a meeting with one of his witches and was making his way over to her house.
The witch was a Grecian woman who could trace her lineage back into antiquity. She and her family had been here longer than Kol had been alive and so she was the most reliable source of information when it came to knowing what was going on in the witchy world. She lived in a nice house that was all white with green accents. It made the house pop and he smiled when he saw the flowers and such growing in the flower beds and the hanging plants.
It was with quick quick knocks that the door opened and the woman came to the door. Chryssa was an older woman, somewhere in her late forties and early fifties, though Kol would never ask, and with laugh lines that showed the joy in her life. Kol liked it when women showed their age. It showed that they had lived. He could not understand the obsession with youth that society placed on women, but then again he was forever nineteen.
Chryssa smiled and then brought Kol into a hug. She had never feared him in the way that other witches had. She was always smiling, always open, and always laughing. Kol returned the hug and when they pulled away Chryssa was smiling. Her smiles were always warm and Kol brightened under her attentions.
"Kol, you come all this way and you do not even bring me a gift," Chryssa said. Her tanned skin glowed in the sunlight. And he laughed.
"You know I would have brought your a gift but I do not know what you would have liked," Kol responded. They began to make their way into the town squares where shops and people were plenty. Fruits and vegetables sat put outside stores to entice customers. Chryssa smiled and waved at people who called out to her from their stores and as they walked by. Kol reached down and grabbed her hand and swung the their two hands together.
"Chryssa, darling, I need some information," Kol said.
The woman rolled her eyes and shook off Kol's hand. "Bah, you never visit me when something good happens. Did you know that my daughter had a baby? See you did not because you only ever come around when you need something and not to say hello to me," Chryssa whined. Kol rolled his eyes but then shrugged his shoulders.
"Congrats on the baby. But Chryssa this is important. This has to do with Expression—"
Chryssa's hands covered her mouth and she looked around the open air market. She leaned in close to the point their noses were almost touching. "Dark magic needs a dark place," was all she said.
She pulled away from him and walked towards one of the few shadowed alleyways in the market. Kol was quick to follow behind her. Neither one of them said a word as they made their way through passages and paths that lead to darker and darker places. Chryssa let him down a set of stairs that led into the crypt. The dead here were cold and silent and Kol felt a shiver go up his spine. Thank God that would never be him.
Chryssa stopped infront of a mausoleum and patted the heavy stone of the home of the dead. "Dark place. Here we can talk about dark things."
Kol had to keep from rolling his eyes. Chryssa watched too many movies and it showed. He leaned against another mausoleum and crossed his arms and his legs. "Witches attacked my brother's home. Witches that practice Expression. I want to know what they want with the bodies of my brothers and my mother."
"The Original Witch's body is not decayed?" Chryssa asked with a raised brow.
"It seemed that my brother was feeling sentimental and wanted to ensure that dear mother was well taken care of." Kol could not wrap his head around the fact that Nik had kept the body of their mother for over a thousand years. What did he gain from keeping the body of the woman who cursed him? Why would he want to keep her around him? But then again this was the man that dagger him and his siblings and then kept them around in coffins. Understanding the machinations of Nik's mind was like trying to heard goldfish in the desert. Pointless. Kool shook his head. "What would Expression witches want with my mother?"
She tilted her head like she was listening to the wind. And then she looked at him, her eyes filled with gravitas. "It is well known that the Original Witch holds nothing but ire for your brother the Hybrid. It is nothing more than finishing what she started and ending all vampires."
Something in Kol's chest seized. His mother was the one that did this to him. It was her and their father that forced them to drink the goblet of doppelgänger blood. It was them that slayed them and forced them to feed. Esther and Michael had turned them into monster and then blamed the for it. Kol's heart hardened. Well, no matter. If mother wanted to end them then he would end her first.
"I need to know about the new witch. The one that is uniting the witches under her banner. What does she have that others did not?"
"I hear that she comes from a long line of powerful witches. That the feats that she had achieved is something of legend. Bringing back the dead and warping space to fit her needs." Kol's eyes widened. The amount of sacrifices needed in order to perform that magic was… astronomical. This was a witch that was not scared to get her hands dirty.
Chryssa sighed and then leaned against the rock. "There is more to tell you." Chryssa rose from leaning against the stone mausoleum and walked over to him. She leaned close to his ear and Kol rolled his eyes. Dramatic Chryssa. Her hands reached out and gripped both sides of his head and she whispered the words.
"Přeneste ode mě k vám cestujícího hostujícího tělo pro dva." A white smoked effused from her mouth and enter Kol. Kol gasped as he felt the other consciousness try to embed itself in his head. He gripped his head and cried out and Chryssa fell to the floor, passed out.
Hello Kol, the Traveler said in his mind. I think I'll be taking control for a little bit. Kol cried out as the last vestiges of light faded away and the Traveler took over.
Kol had always been a little awkward around her.
It was natural considering the nature of their relationship. Kol had wanted her. He had liked her and made her into the vampire that she was today. And she chose his brother. Caroline knew in the moments that they had been together before everything was horribly fucked up that some small part of him resented Klaus.
He had told her that everyone had always fawned over him. His family had bent over backwards trying to appease him and then Elijah, Rebekah, and Klaus had gone and made that "Always and Forever" pact leaving Kol and Finn to the wayside. For the longest time, he had felt as though he was an addition to the family rather than a part of the family.
Caroline knew all this and she still chose Klaus over him. Some small part of her regretting the decision. She did not regret loving Klaus, she could never regret such a thing, but she regretted not reaching out to him sooner. She regretted making him feel like he was another stepping stone to the first choice that was Klaus.
And she knew she could have done more. Reached out more and talked more, but the past was in the past and there was no reason to try and ruin what they had now. After leaving Klaus she had found herself closer to Kol. They had fun just like they did in the beginning but without all the expectation of who she was going to chose at the end of the day. For a while they were just two kids having fun in the world.
Then all this nonsense started with the Expression witches and Silas and that was so damn annoying. Just when Caroline was starting to have some fun, it was ruined by some witches that did not know where they belonged in the world. Caroline knew the moment that she found out about this new Expression witch she was going to make her suffering long and glorious.
Caroline sat down in the ruined den of the house and clicked a button. Above the ruined mantle, the walls parted to reveal a tv and Caroline clicked another button and the TV flashed on. She watched as she ran fingers through her hair. Klaus was gone, off to make visits to the proper witches and the army that he was abound to arouse. Kol had gone off too, to get more information about the new Expression witch and what she could possibly want. So that left Caroline alone. She sighed.
If there was one thing that Caroline did not like it was being alone. When she was alone she felt as though the walls pressed in and she could hear the screams of her sister. Of the one who taught her everything that she knew about fighting and blood and murder.
She sighed as she felt the world pressing in again and rose from the couch. The TV droned on and on about the economy and how that was going to affect the world but Caroline could hear nothing over the ringing in her ears and the buzzing of the static from the TV. God she needed to replace that TV.
Making her way out of the house, Caroline stumbled out of the house .Her throat burned. It ached for the warm feeling of blood sliding down it. She looked around and prayed that there was some jogger of lost tourist that she could snack on. But then Kol appear by her side bright and smiling as though he had never left.
"Going somewhere?" Kol asked. He linked his arm through her own, but Caroline could do nothing but shake it off. God she needed a moment. Just a single moment with someone and then the blood would be sliding down her throat. In moment like these Klaus was always there to offer an arm of his neck and let her have some of that tasty Hybrid blood. But he was not here and she had been dealing with this problem on her own for the last decade. She did not need him. "Caroline?"
She stumbled down the street and she could hear the sound of people. It was like a siren song and she a sailor lost at sea. It drew her, but then something wrapped around her wrist. Her eyes darted over and Kol held her wrist. He puled her close, their chests touching, and smiled down at her.
"I don't think that is a very good idea do you Care?" Kol said lowly. Caroline shook her head. Washing off the daze of the bloodlust caused by her anxiety. What the hell had she been thinking? Walking into a town square with nothing more than blood on her mind? She rested her hands on Kol's chest and then leaned away from him.
"Thank you. I don't know what I was thinking," she said. Her anxiety had been through the roof recently with all the witches that they had been chasing. And then there was the attacks and the fact that Esther might be out and about. Caroline shook her head again.
"Hey why don't you come with me for a little while?" Kol offered. He linked their arms again and was already leading them away. "It will help you clear your mind." Caroline nodded her head and let her feet follow after him. They walked down the paths slipping through bodies of people and sometimes taking their time to stare out into the water.
They spoke about anything. They spoke about things that had long since passed and things that were happening today. Kol told her that he had called Rebekah and made sure that the only Mikaelson daughter was on her way to Greece right that moment. Caroline smiled at the thought of Rebekah.
She was a sweet girl when she was not angry. And some parts of Rebekah reminded Caroline of herself. In her reminiscing she had found that Kol was leading them to the warehouse district of the town. The warehouses loomed over them, their long shadows and bodies blotting out the setting sun.
"Kol why are we here?" Caroline asked.
"Because I have a surprise," Kol said with a grin. Caroline smiled. Kol's surprises were always fun and there was never one that she had not enjoyed before. They walked into a warehouse where a man lay. A chain attached to the wall behind kept him stationary and his body was bloody. Caroline smiled as she walked closer to him.
"A witch?" Caroline asked.
"Not quite."
The man looked up at her, his eyes glowing amber. Wolf. Those were the only words she could think before he pounced on her and Kol laughed.
"Will they come?" she asked once more. Katherine sighed, the witch knew that her questions were annoying but she wanted to make sure. She needed to know the answer or else she would forget. Her memory was not the best. Sometimes she would have memories that played as clear as a movie and other days she struggled to remember her own name. Today was a day in the middle. Sometimes she remembered things, other times she was not sure if they even happened.
"They will show up. You need to relax," Katherine said looking out at the water. Something inside of the witch was jumping. It leaped and rolled inside of her stomach and made her tap her feet against the ground in a rapid, staccato rhythm. It bothered Katherine. She kept giving pointed looks to her feet, but the witch could not stop. She needed to know that everything was going to plan. She needed to know that everything was going to turn out alright.
Anxiety twisted her head and made the witch want to puke. There was so much riding on this one thing. There was so much that depended on this part of the plan working out. But she knew that the travelers would not disappoint them. She knew that they would make sure everything went on without a hitch.
A long silver Mercedes pulled up. The man who stepped out made fuzzy memories blossom in her head. The face was there in her mind, but the witch could not place where she knew him from. Brown hair that curled atop his head and brown eyes the crinkled when he smiled, just like they were doing now. Butterflies fluttered in her tummy but she squashed them. Now was not the time and she did not want to expend the effort to try and untangle the jumble that is her mind.
"I brought her," the man said. His voice made the witch was to cry out but she did not know if it was in anger or something else. "She's in the trunk."
It was with a click of a button that the trunk popped open. Katherine and the witch made their way over. Sitting there in the trunk with her blonde locks in disarray was the love of Klaus's life.: Caroline. The witch smiled as she watched the vampire shudder.
"And the werewolf?" the witch asked.
"Worked like a charm. She didn't even expect it," the man said. The witch smiled and clapped her hands. This was good. This was very good. They had the vampire and they had everyone on their side. Witches and werewolves were coming together to end the reign of terror the Mikaelson family had put them under.
They would be free. They would be avenged. And it would be glorious.
"And you will keep your end of the bargain?" The man asked. Looking into his eyes, Bonnie felt the butterflies return. It was nothing more than a small flutter but it was there. Bonnie turned away from his eyes and focused on the vampire who was moaning in the trunk of his car. She would be waking up soon and she did not need to know who had her just yet.
The witch closed the trunk and turned back to the Passenger inside the vampire. "Of course I will keep my end of the bargain. With the help of the Original Witch making it so that Travelers will no longer live in fear is easy work. Once my work is done then you shall get your reward."
The Traveler smiled and those feelings were back. She shoved them down. The witch turned to Katherine and they slid into the car, the Passenger passing them the keys. The Passenger leaned onto the window of the car and tilted his head.
"Be careful," he said. "Never know when the hallucinations will start."
"We'll be advised," Katherine said as she pulled out of the parking lot. Katherine drove fast, weaving in and out of lanes and making it so that they were nothing more than a silver blur than a car. The witch sides from the passenger seat and looked to Katherine. Her hands were in a vice tight grip, that made the olive skin of her fingers, bone white.
"I know that this must be hard for you," the witch said. "Betraying your best friend."
"Nothing I haven't done before," Katherine said. The set of her jaw said otherwise.
"I had a best friend once," the witch said. The memory was hazy. She could remember the feelings, the setting, but the faces were washed away. Black faces stared back at her and when she closed her eyes all she could remember was "—ms." She opened her eyes again and they were on the highway. "I think I loved my best friend."
"We all love our best friends."
"That is what makes this so difficult. You love them but you love Elijah more."
The car was silent. The only sound being the wheels against the asphalt. Bonnie turned to look out the window and watch as the world passed by. There was no music so the song was their breathing. Katherine spoke again.
"I always thought that it was going to be the two of us against the world. That is would always be me and Caroline. But then she chose Klaus and I chose living and that future ended."
The witch leaned over and pressed a hand to one on the steering wheel. "After all this you can have that future again."
"No, I won't. Killing Klaus will end any future with Caroline in it."
"You all live for thousands of years," the witch said. "She'll get over it."
A groan sounded from the back of the trunk and the witch smiled. "I think your friend is waking up." They pulled over on some nondescript street and Katherine got out the car to talk to her friend. The witch leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes. Who was her best friend again?
"—ms."
"Mmmmmssss," the witch said elongating the word. "Mmmmmssss."
