Drabble 68: A Perfect Elf

A/N: Hey guys! Here's another humor-focused drabble. I thought of this one myself. Enjoy it!

"Name… what's a good name…"

"What are you up to?"

Fitz whirled around quickly. "Nothing."

Jemma raised an eyebrow. "What did you just put behind your chair?"

"I didn't -."

Jemma walked over and looked at the television. "Are you playing a game?"

"Yes." Fitz said. "And I know what you're going to say, but -."

"What am I going to say?" she asked.

"That it's stupid to play video games."

"What makes you think I would say that?"

He picked up his controller. "I just figured."

"I didn't exactly peg you as a video game person either, but I never thought you didn't play them." She said.

"Just every once in a while." He said quickly. "It's not like I do it that often, or I'm that good."

"I completely understand." She said.

"I'm only playing now because this game is new, and I heard it's really good."

Jemma pulled a chair over and sat down next to him. "What is it?"

Fitz looked at her, still a bit suspicious, but nodded and answered. "Fantasy Fortress."

"What do you do?"

"Are you really interested in this stuff?" Fitz asked.

"Every once in a while I do like to try online games."

Fitz shook his head. "How did I never know that?"

"It never came up." Jemma answered simply. "But now we know, so let's play!"

"Alright." He said. "There's another controller in the cabinet under the TV."

Jemma retrieved the second controller and went back to her seat. "I'm not too late to join, right?"

"No. I just started. I'm still making my character."

"It's one of those games!" she said, smiling.

Fitz chuckled. "You really do like these games, don't you?"

She looked at the screen. "Maybe. But I don't let myself play them often."

"It can be relaxing to play video games." Fitz said.

"I guess we'll find out." Jemma said.

Now Fitz smiled. "Yes, we will. Let's make our characters."

"What are the options?"

"Swordsman, wizard, elf, fairy, or knight."

"And you are…?"

"A swordsman." He said.

Jemma stifled a giggle.

"What?"

"Nothing." She said, smiling. "It's just funny that you chose swordsman over wizard. Wizards are obviously better."

"Oh really now." He said. "And how would an elf like you know?"

She stopped short. "An elf?"

"Of all characters, you are definitely an elf."

"And you're a swordsman?"

"Yes." He said. "Because they rely least on physical strength. It's all technique. And the first thing they do is design a sword."

"Maybe that does work for you." Jemma said. "But you think I'm an elf!?"

"Why not? You'd be a perfect little elf, with cute pointed ears. The elves in the game are all brilliant and know healing magic too. That's you."

"Why can't I be a wizard?"

"Well I suppose you could be -."

"Then I'll be a wizard."

"But you're really more of an elf." Fitz said.

"But I want to be a wizard."

They looked at each other for a moment, each daring the other to back down.

"Fine." Fitz said. "It's your character."

"Thank you." Jemma said.

"But you should know the wizards in the game aren't nearly as good as the ones in Harry Potter."

Jemma stopped just before clicking on the wizard profile. "How so?" she asked.

"They start out with only a few spells, and I've heard you have to find the better ones, and they're hidden really well."

Jemma looked at him carefully. "You're not just trying to make me be an elf, are you?"

"Of course not." He said quickly.

"Your eyes moved to the left! You were!" she said.

"I just really think an elf would suit you."

Jemma shook her head. "Let's see what the others think, shall we?"

"What?"

"Let's ask Skye."

"You guys are this stuck on creating a game profile?" Skye asked.

"Once you make a profile you can't change it unless you start over." Fitz said. "We have to choose carefully, because we're stuck with our choice."

"Fitz thinks I absolutely need to be an elf."

"And she wants to be a wizard."

"Just be what you want. It's just a game."

"See?" Jemma said, giving Fitz a look. "I'm being a wizard."

"Skye, the elves are tiny, brilliant, and healers."

Skye was quiet for a minute, looking at Jemma.

"Fitz is right. You need to be an elf."

Jemma looked from Skye to Fitz, not believing what she was hearing. Then she smiled, laughing lightly. "If it means that much to you, how can I refuse?"

Skye high-fived Fitz before he and Jemma walked out of her room. "Have fun playing your video game!" she called after them.

"It just doesn't sound as cool when she says it." Jemma said as they walked back to the game.

"Don't worry, little elf." Fitz said. "It'll be great."

"I love this game!" Fitz said an hour later as he sliced through a low-level monster with his specially designed sword, making it scatter into pixels and vanish.

"It's great!" Jemma said as she took one out with a well-aimed spell. Apparently, though elves primarily used healing magic, they could master other spells. She was very glad she had chosen to be an elf.

"I'm glad you're playing with me." Fitz said.

"We make a great team in everything else." Jemma said. "I figured we'd make a good team in this too."

"In what?" Ward asked as he walked in.

"Just a video game." Fitz said.

"You two play video games?"

Jemma met Fitz's eyes. "Apparently no one thinks we can play them."

"Hey, I'm just a little surprised." He said. "You ever play Call of Duty?"

"No." Fitz said.

"One time." Jemma said.

Fitz and Ward looked at her. "Yes, I'm full of surprises." She said lightly.

"What are you playing now?"

"Fantasy Fortress." Jemma said.

Ward laughed. "Fantasy? Now I get why you're playing it."

"Fitz is pretty handy with his sword." Jemma said.

"Training to be a warrior." Ward said approvingly, patting Fitz on the shoulder.

"Yeah, let's go with that." Fitz said.

"Well I'm going to train." Ward said.

"We should probably get back to the lab." Jemma said once he had left.

Fitz looked at her. "One more level?"

She grinned. "Maybe two."
