Drabble 84: The Wildest Night
A/N: Requested by Squee the magical bunny.
"Are you ready?"
Jemma looked at him, kissing his cheek. "Extremely. Are you sure you want to go the traditional route, and separate for the night?" she moved her lips down his neck, to his collarbone. "I'm going to miss you."
Fitz's eyes fluttered at her touch, and he cursed himself for saying what he was about to. "I'm sure." He said, his voice higher than normal. "But God I'm going to miss you too." He had to be strong, and stick with their plan. He and Jemma had both agreed they wanted to go the traditional route, and not see each other the night before the wedding. But now that they were here, and he was actually preparing to leave… it was so much harder than he'd ever thought it would be. He didn't want to go anywhere.
He touched the back of Jemma's neck and pressed his forehead to hers. "If we were smart, we would throw away tradition and just stay together till the vows are exchanged. Make sure nothing bad happens…"
"Make something good happen…" Jemma said suggestively.
Fitz groaned and backed away, before his body could overpower his stupid, stupid mind. "If I don't leave now I won't be able to." He said. He grabbed his bag and put it over his shoulder, kissing her quickly on the lips and walking to the door. "Until tomorrow, Jemma."
"Goodnight Fitz."
"Don't let the girls keep you out too late, yeah?"
"What?" he heard the surprise in her tone and opened the door, turning to see her reaction. She gasped excitedly as Daisy, May, and Bobbi ran in. Fitz walked out the door with a smile. They would keep her entertained. As for himself, he would go to the lab and just relax. He'd just gotten to his car when he heard footsteps immediately behind him.
"Now where do you think you're going?" Mack asked.
"Jemma's got her bachelorette party." Fitz said, turning to face them. "I'm off to the lab."
"What about your bachelor party?" Coulson said.
"Not having one." Fitz said. "I don't really see the need to."
"I know you didn't just say that, Turbo." Mack said, shaking his head.
"It's lucky we're here then, mate. We're not giving you a choice." Hunter whipped out a sack.
Fitz looked at the sack and then at the guys. "You're not seriously kidnapping me."
Hunter tossed the bag over his head, and guided Fitz into the backseat of his car. "Trust me, Fitz. It's more fun this way."
"I can't believe you guys!" Jemma cried, hugging Daisy and Bobbi.
May smiled. "It's not every day a teammate gets married."
"Especially when it's a wedding we've all been routing for since the first time we saw you." Daisy said.
Jemma looked at them. "That's not true." She said.
"We didn't call you anything but Fitz-Simmons for the first few weeks." May said. "Trust us, we knew you'd get together."
"I hoped, at least." Bobbi said. "I remember when you weren't talking to each other. I was a little nervous you wouldn't be able to get over yourselves."
Indignation ruffled Jemma's feathers. "Get over ourselves? Fitz had just had a traumatic brain injury, and I'd been undercover in HYDRA!"
Bobbi shrugged. "Hunter and I didn't have any trouble getting back together."
"Yeah, you just scream at each other, make out, and scream at each other some more." May said in a deadpan.
Jemma laughed. Bobbi chuckled. "I never said we were a healthy example. But damn is it good sometimes."
"Fitz is so unlike Hunter, though." Daisy said.
"We'll find out." Bobbi said.
Jemma looked between them, curious. "What do you mean we'll find out?"
The two shared a look. "You didn't think you got a bachelor party and Fitz didn't, right?"
Alarm took the smile off Jemma's face. "Hunter's taken Fitz for a bachelor party!"
Bobbi touched her arm. "Hey, it's not a big deal. They're gonna have some fun."
"What kind of fun?" Jemma asked. Fitz wouldn't do anything, but if Hunter was calling the shots… oh, what if they had actual shots? Then their judgement would be impaired, and they could do something reckless or stupid… they were certainly going to do something stupid, but the extent was yet to be determined…
"Coulson and Mack are there too." May said.
Well, that was a bit of a relief. If those two were there, things couldn't get too out of hand.
"You brought me to the lab."
Hunter tossed the sack aside and grinned at Fitz. "Yeah."
"You know this is where I was coming anyway. Why did you have to put me in that awful sack?"
"You know he's got a point." Mack said thoughtfully.
Hunter never stopped smiling. "What's done is done, mate. Now let's get this bachelor party started."
They started walked around the lab, looking for… something. Fitz had no idea. "So what exactly are we doing tonight?" he asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
"You ever play team games in gym classes?" Mack asked.
Mention of gym class? This was already making Fitz nervous. "Yeah." He said.
"We're doing Capture the Flag, essentially." Hunter said. "The fun part is the danger level."
"You know I'm getting married tomorrow, right?" Fitz asked. "I need to be in one piece for the wedding."
"Relax, Fitz." Coulson said. He took off his fake hand and put on a different one. The one with a blaster. "We're all agents here. No one's gonna get hurt. Besides, you're on my team." Coulson whipped his tech hand up, pulling up the shield. "I won't let anything bad happen."
Hunter walked over with a wide grin and four large mugs. "Fuel, before we start." He said. He handed one to Fitz, who drank half of the beer in a few swallows. A little alcohol might make this seem like a better idea.
"Don't worry about the guys." Daisy said. "Come on, Jemma, we're supposed to have fun tonight!"
Jemma cast one last look at the door and nodded. She knew Daisy was right. Fitz would be fine. "What would you like to do?"
"It's your night." May said.
Jemma wasn't good at spontaneity, so this was a bittersweet luxury. She sort of smiled at them, not knowing what to say. Daisy laughed, understanding thankfully. "Let's hit the town." She suggested. "Get some ideas."
"That sounds great." Jemma said.
"But you need to change." Bobbi said.
"It's not like we're trying to pick up guys." Daisy said. "She doesn't look that bad."
"I take offense to that." Jemma said, looking at her outfit. Dark jeans, Converse, and a blue tank top. "I dressed for a casual night."
May walked back into the room (when had she left?), throwing a leather jacket at Jemma, and then a pair of little brown boots. "Switch your shoes and put that on, then let's go." She smiled. "I haven't done this is a long time."
Jemma grinned, obliging. If May was looking forward to the night that much, the least she could do was make sure it was fun.
"Wooohoooo!" Fitz yelled, shooting his ICER at practically everything along the far wall. He hit most of the targets, but it was more from the number of shots fired than the accuracy. He looked at Coulson and laughed. "This is perfect!" he yelled.
"Glad you're having fun, but you just gave away our position." Coulson said, looking around. "We need to find their flag."
They ran out and through the hall, heading to the loading dock. Fitz was almost vibrating with energy. So this was the high from battle! Knowing there wasn't actual danger, he was able to really enjoy the experience. He felt competitive. He wanted to win. That would be a great way to kick off married life. He couldn't wait to tell Jemma.
They ran in, and shots hit the wall just behind them. They ran for cover, crouching behind some boxes. "They must have stayed on defense." Coulson said.
"You said I gave away our position back there." Fitz said. "Maybe one of them went to check it out. If we fire more shots back there, maybe they'll come investigate."
"But we know the flag is here."
"You get the flag." Fitz said. "I'll be the distraction." He grinned. "Just don't let me get shot from behind, yeah?"
"Fitz, don't -!"
"I'm trusting you!" Fitz yelled over his shoulder as he sprang up and started running back towards the hallway. Shots started firing the second he jumped up, and he laughed as he ran, holding his ICER ready.
By the second drink at the bar, Jemma was not at all worried about the guys. She wasn't even thinking about them anymore. She was more concerned with the rest of her evening with her friends. "Let's do this!" she said loudly, laughing.
She saw May's expression lighten as she looked at her. Bobbi was on her phone, calling for a cab. Daisy came over. "The clubs are waiting for us." She said.
"So is the cab." Bobbi motioned for them to follow her, and Jemma practically jumped up. This was much better than being alone for the night! They crammed into the cab and drove to a dance club, joining the throng of people listening to music much too loud in a space much too small and dark. Jemma didn't love clubs, but it was the experience as a whole she was enjoying. And she was definitely enjoying it. She played pool against May (and actually won… thank you geometry and physics!). She danced with Daisy and Bobbi, until she couldn't feel her feet anymore, and practically forgot how to speak below a shout.
When they finally emerged from the club, Jemma was exhausted, beaming, and still giddy. "That was fantastic!" she cried.
"We're outside." Bobbi said. "You don't have to yell anymore."
"Am I yelling?"
Daisy laughed. "Yes!" she yelled.
Jemma giggled and took a deep breath. "Better?" she asked, in a lower voice.
"Yes." Bobbi said.
"Now you need to get some sleep." May said, steering Jemma towards a cab. "You have a wedding tomorrow!"
"I can walk." Jemma said. She knew she was acting drunk, but a lot of it was acting. The environment, the friends, a little bit of alcohol, all made it easier to act a little more freely than usual. "I don't want the night to end."
"You saying you don't want to marry Fitz? You need to go to tomorrow if you want that to happen." Daisy said.
Jemma sighed theatrically, then smiled. "Alright."
"I'm going to check on the guys." Bobbi said. "I need to make sure they're not keeping Fitz up too late either."
Daisy decided to go with Bobbi, and Jemma expected to go back to the apartment herself, but May got into the cab right behind her.
"You're coming?"
"Someone needs to make sure you actually get some sleep." May said with a light smile.
Jemma touched May's hand for a second. "Thank you."
Bobbi and Daisy walked into the base, expecting things to be loud and out of hand. After all, Hunter had planned all this. What they weren't expecting was to find all the guys asleep, Mack and Hunter at the TV with a video game console and Coulson at his desk. Bobbi looked with amusement at the couch, where Fitz was spread out, holding what looked like a flag close to his chest.
"They're all out." Daisy said.
Bobbi smirked at the amusement in her tone. "That's the thing about Hunter." She said. "For all his big talk, his parties don't last long." She lowered her voice. "He puts everything he has into them from the start."
"Well I hope they had a good time." Daisy said. "Because other than Fitz, they're gonna be sore in the morning, sleeping like that."
Bobbi winced. "Should we wake them up?"
Daisy just laughed.
