The Butterfly Fairy – Chapter 17
Tomorrow turned into days and many weeks for Marisol especially. Summer proved to also be a very busy time for this new butterfly fairy. While Tinker Bell, Annora, and the others took turns splitting their time between Lizzy, summer duties, and their other new friends, Marisol found herself mostly cavorting with the butterflies. During the day, she would play, but at night … She made sure no one followed her one evening shortly after they had all recovered from the shock of a fairy becoming a butterfly. Or … was it true?
Only the ones Marisol truly trusted knew her secret about her other side. Of course her sister knew now, as did Annora, who helped in the process of calming down her sister. Now … listening for the familiar flap of Papillion's wings, she bit into the cloth bundle she had pulled out from under her bed to hold it into her mouth as she slowly lowered herself to her knees and found the hidden latch in the floor of her dorm.
Opening it as softly as she could, she counted to 10 before she dove into the night air and blew into the cloth bundle that hid her magical whistle. At the small tweet, her small hands found the edges of Papillion's wings as he caught her and they both took off into the dusk and serene night air, towards the open area away from Fairy Camp that Marisol called Butterfly Grove. Nearly there and just barely crossing the edge of the small circle, Papillion suddenly dove away from the magical place as Marisol hopped off his back and revealed her magnificent wings to the small circle of white butterflies that obediently waited for her to begin.
Reaching into one of the folds of her new moss dress, she pulled her pixie dust bag out of her pocket and poured out some of the delicate dust intricately into her hand as she put the rest of it away. Reaching back to pinch a scale off the sparkling dust that radiated off of one of her new scaled wings, she took the moment to sprinkle the scale with the fresh dust from her hand before she felt one of the white butterflies rub its head against hers before she was ready.
"Willing-bee, ok, ok!" Mari chuckled as signaled for the excited butterfly to calm down enough for her to touch the now sparkling scale to its temple. "Now, what dream do you have for me tonight?"
From Willing-bee to all of the butterflies that made up the circle, Marisol saw all of the dreams of the children who had a butterfly outside their window that night, one of which she recognized with a small sigh. Nodding her head towards the butterflies, she blew up the dust from off the scale and flew into the mist created by it as she folded down her wings to cover her and allowed the dreams to warm off her wings as she smiled.
With her eyes taking on their dusty sheen that allowed her mind to see into the essence of the dreams themselves, she saw each child that each individual dream belonged to. In that single moment, all of the butterflies sighed an admiring chitter as a flurry of dust-like butterflies zipped out of the 'cocoon' made by Marisol's wings as she found herself singing …
"A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep
In dreams you will lose your heartache(s)
(In) whatever you wish for, you keep"
As the small golden sea of butterflies each flew over great distances to their individual charge(s), her voice continued, "Have faith in your dreams and someday … Your rainbow will come shining through … No matter how your heart is grieving … If you keep on believing … The dream that you wish will come true."
Feeling the kiss of each butterfly delivering her comforts, Marisol allowed herself to float down to where her feet touched the ground as she sighed with fatigue.
"A dream is a wish … your heart makes
When your fast asleep
In dreams … you will lose your heartache(s)
(In) whatever you wish for … You keep"
Seeing the butterflies retire for the night, Marisol nodded up at Papillon as he came over to scoop her back up to fly her back to fairy camp as she inwardly knew she didn't touch every dream that night either. However, to the ones she felt in her heart that her comforts did reach, she sang out for the last time that late evening, "Have faith in your dreams and someday … Your rainbow will come shining through … No matter how your heart is grieving … If you keep on believing … The dream that you wish will … come … true".
It was early. Too early for Marisol to be up and chipper as she felt three pairs of eyes stare down at her from where she laid curled up on the floor. Opening her eyes, she shot right up past their concerned glances as she bumped into the shelf that housed a couple of knick-knacks and almost knocked them to the floor.
"Whoa there, Mari! Easy," her friend Emma said loud enough for Mari to shake the remaining essences of sleep from her eyes as she touched her forehead to ease a sudden headache. "That's what happens when you sleep on the floor sometimes. Did you fall out of bed, again?"
Knowing the cover-line that Emma was throwing at her in confusion, Marisol looked past Emma to see the unknown suspicions of the two other animal fairies that shared their dorm. One of them was another customary butterfly-herder like Marisol classified to be, as they both decided to leave and each start their day.
"What were you up to last night?" Emma asked her best friend as Marisol sighed her concern off and stepped into a nearby closet to change into one of her regular outfits. "I can't keep 'covering up' for you!"
"Then don't!" Marisol called out as she emerged a minute later and grabbed a soft petal from the side of the wash basin to wipe her face off. "Emma … I'm sorry! I just ... I …"
"You know you can talk to me, right?" Emma said, sitting her friend down on the edge of her bed as she took the still damp petal and carefully cleaned the crusty edges of her friend's wings from the night before. "What were you doing last night? Every time you come back from one of your 'excursions', it's just … You should see these wings! Pixie dust doesn't crust up like this, unless … Does this have something to do with your new butterfly abilities?"
"Um …" was all Marisol could say as she felt Emma turn her face to where she could read her eyes as she sighed annoyingly.
"Mari," Emma sighed, but then gave in to her curiosity as she saw Marisol smile up at her new wings that glistened with the still sheen from last night. "What did happen last night?"
"It's … hard to describe," Marisol said as she then heard both of their tummies rumble as both of them caught on and just giggled.
"Well, come on," Emma said, helping Marisol up to her feet as she knew her friend wouldn't be able to fly for a least a while. "You can tell me later. Right now, let's go grab some breakfast."
"I'm not going to say 'no' to that idea," Mari said, taking out a nectar bulb she always kept in her pocket, to which a couple of the butterflies waiting to be painted immediately peeked up at as she passed them on their way to the fairy camp snack room, where a couple of servers and cooks had sent up a temporary kitchen.
Finding a nearby mushroom table set for two, the two fairies quickly placed their order as Emma stared as Marisol put in an order for two sides of Fairy Toast, a whole raspberry tartlet, and a whole sunflower seed omelet.
When it was her turn, all Emma said was, "I'll just have an orange slice glazed biscuit with a glass of blueberry juice, please thank you."
"Not very hungry, huh?" Marisol said, giving her friend a funny snort as Emma's eyes widened in comparison as she countered back, "Me? You ordered a whole feast!"
"Just trying to make casual conversation," Mari said, trying to hide her fidgeting wings as they quivered from them being tucked down. Giving up, she let them unfurl back up as they caught the edge of a serving talent that tilted forward and barely caught the edge of a platter before it fell.
Oops, Marisol muttered under her breath as the serving talent shot her an annoyed look and continued on to the next table before Emma asked her, "Those things have been giving you trouble ever since you became a fairy, again, huh?"
"I am a fairy, Emma," Marisol found herself speaking a bit too loud as she cleared her throat at the attention they were getting. Waiting until some of them turned away from her conversation, she continued, "But there are things I can do without pixie dust anymore. Uh … I mean, look at my wings. At this size, my wings are powerful enough to lift me off the ground! I didn't even know that until my …"
"Experience?" Emma guessed for her friend. "Believe me, you are the buzz of Fairy Camp, no pun intended, right now. What you did for your human friend a week ago … That was pretty cool!"
"Yeah, but … Nothing, it's not important," Mari said, taking out her nectar bulb to sip, again, while Emma looked up to see more butterflies than normal arrive near the camp tree. The other butterfly herders were trying to move away from the entrance where the fairies and sparrow men could still come and go when necessary.
"Goodness, I've never seen this many butterflies attracted here at one time," Emma said, not noticing the way some of them were looking at Marisol as she lowered her head.
When their trays arrived, Emma watched as her friend distractingly looked up at nothing sometimes as she ate slowly. With each bite, Emma observed that Marisol felt much more tensed up than she had all morning that she said, "You know, Winter … Or I should say, Aquan has working with River better. I heard they've been conversing with Silvermist and the other water fairies in making sure we get a steady downpour in the next few days."
"That's nice," Marisol said, standing up as a flash across her eyes revealed the same black swallow chasing one of her young butterfly charges.
"What? What is it?" Emma asked, watching Marisol beat her wings in a tizzy and jumped up off of the mushroom fast enough to alert two scout fairies that followed her trail out of the tree and into the sky. Trying to catch up, Emma flew up after her friend and shouted, "Mari!"
"Sorry Emma!" Marisol called straight down as she flapped her wings hard to pass through the swarm that seemed to join her in her frenzy escape to get through and out to the meadow. "I have to do this!"
Hundreds of fairies watched out of dorm windows and even the Minister of Summer noticed as Marisol was followed by the 'sea of butterflies' that followed her in her wake. Getting to the meadow was the only thing on Marisol's mind as she caught the eye of one of the small yellow butterflies that paused to hover at her side.
With her wings radiating a flash, Marisol just nodded to the one that led the east side of her flight as it and a small squadron of them followed them as they veered off in another direction.
With the scouts following them, she knew she would have to explain to Nyx why she flew off so recklessly, but Marisol didn't care what anyone thought right now. Someone was in trouble (she wasn't sure who), but she wanted to do everything in her ability to make sure the one she saw in her vision was safe. However, she knew she had to get there in time first!
Here it is, the next chapter of Mari's adventure! I apologize for the later posting of this story, but I am still working out the next following chapters of where this story is going. I hope this was worth the wait! Thanks for reading and following this story, guys. And, don't worry, although "Mari" is still a mystery to me, I promise her story is not through yet!
Keep believing and have "Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust". A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes belongs to Disney, but I just thought it just fit for an
example of what is to come.
